What does it actually take for design to matter inside a massive organization? In this episode, hosts Giulia Donatello and Lee-Sean Huang sit down with Seth Johnson to talk about design at enterprise scale, and what designers get wrong about building influence.Seth Johnson is Design Director at IBM's Chief Data Office, where he leads a team driving AI-first enterprise data transformation. Over a 12-year tenure at IBM, his work has evolved from designing artifacts and experiences toward designing the conditions under which good design can happen at scale. Before IBM, he founded a Minneapolis-based design practice. He has served as president of AIGA Minnesota and as an adjunct faculty member at Parsons School of Design. In This EpisodeFrom a used bookshop to IBM. Seth's path to design started at age 12, flipping through Dorfsman & CBS in a used bookshop, and seeing for the first time what design could look like as a system at scale. That same impulse, he says, is what he's still chasing at IBM, just at a different altitude.Design as infrastructure. At IBM's Chief Data Office, Seth's team exists to provide the company with a single, trusted view of how the business is performing. Design's role there is turning data from something people dread into something they rely on every day.The business doesn't care about design. And it shouldn't. Seth's most provocative argument: design only earns influence when it connects itself to outcomes leadership actually cares about: revenue, risk, speed, and fewer defects. Designers are always outnumbered. That means assimilating into the organization's dominant rhythms before earning the right to ask anyone else to change.Treat your team like volunteers. Seth's core leadership philosophy, drawn from years of running AIGA Minnesota: talented people decide every day how much energy and creativity they're willing to invest. You might get the work, but you won't get the commitment. And you definitely can't fake caring at scale. The era of the lone genius is over. On design education: Seth argues that schools still do a reasonable job of preparing designers to work independently, but fall short in preparing them to lead within teams. Design is a team sport, and design students should be partnering across disciplines—biology, nursing, public policy—before they ever step into practice.Resources MentionedDorfsman & CBS by Dick Hess and Marion Muller - https://amzn.to/4unbsHT (out of print; available secondhand)Humanizing Data Through Design with Giorgia Lupi (AIGA Design Podcast on YouTube) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZZIR8W9AlYGiorgia Lupi on the AIGA Design Podcast (Other Platforms) - https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/aigadesign/episodes/Humanizing-Data-Through-Design-with-Giorgia-Lupi-e3fi3h1/a-acg9jrhSeth Johnson & Jenny Price: How AIGA Leadership Changed Everything - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12f7g-YG8cY  Designing Change in Bureaucracy with Ivan Boscariol (YouTube) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f5zESGtKb8Designing Change in Bureaucracy with Ivan Boscariol (Other Platforms) - https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/aigadesign/episodes/Designing-Change-in-Bureaucracy-with-Ivan-Boscariol-e32eemtCorita Kent, 2016 AIGA Medalist Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tivdlh2mhIU IBM Design - https://www.ibm.com/design Subscribe to the AIGA Design Podcast on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/aigadesign Send us your questions, comments, and voicemails at podcast@aiga.org.

Send us Fan Mail “When God seems silent … He is in no way absent.”  This week I am inspired by the story of Esther.  In the book of Esther, God is not explicit in the story but he is still there. I share a brief review of the story of Esther and then point out the ways that the Lord put people in just the right place to help in the deliverance.  Then relate it to our own lives, how many times we may not realize how the Lord is there in our lives.  I share of few of the times when he has been in mine lately and invite you to look for ways that he may not be involved in the small and simple ways.  And also happy beginning of summer! For show notes and transcipts go to www.findingthefloor.com/ep258 I would love to hear from you!  You can reach me at camille@findingthefloor.com or dm @findingthefloor on instagram.  Thanks for listening!!Thanks to Seth Johnson for my intro and outro original music.  I love it so much!

Send us Fan Mail Different busy is the topic for this week.  I contemplate different seasons in our lives.  How I used to be so good at some things when my kids were little and now I don't do those same things as well.  Like regularly getting to the grocery store.  I also share how we need to give ourselves grace because it is easy to compare how we used to be in one season and may not be now.  Seasons obviously change as our children grow and we are constantly adjusting to their new needs and working on our relationships.  Lastly I talk about the seasons of our spiritual growth and share the great scripture passage from Ecclesiastes about a season for everything.  For show notes and transcript go to www.findingthefloor.com/ep257 I would love to hear from you!  You can reach me at camille@findingthefloor.com or dm @findingthefloor on instagram.  Thanks for listening!!Thanks to Seth Johnson for my intro and outro original music.  I love it so much!

Send us Fan MailA good read by the pool!  That is what I have been daydreaming about as I go about my busy days this week. This episode I share a few of my favorite authors and some of their books to get ideas for when you get into the slower rhythm of the summer.  I mostly like romantic comedy books but also share a few different varieties of books.  First I talk of Beth Brower who is a sort of late regency (1880s) in her Unselected Journal of Emma M. Lion.  Then a few of the romantic comedy authors,  Katherine Center, Courney Walsh, and Becca Kinzer.  I also share a few murder mystery authors, Josi Kilpack and Rebecca Connolly.  Lastly I leave you with an idea to maybe pick up a classic you have never read or have been meaning to read or any non-fiction that I have shared with you on this podcast - especially The Confident Mind by Dr. Nate Zinsser.  So let's daydream of summer and a nice cozy read by the pool, beach or comfy couch.  I would love to hear from you!  You can reach me at camille@findingthefloor.com or dm @findingthefloor on instagram.  Thanks for listening!!Thanks to Seth Johnson for my intro and outro original music.  I love it so much!

Twenty miles east of Lake Tahoe, high up in the Virginia Range at 6,500 feet elevation is one of the best preserved Old West towns in America, Virginia City. Known to locals as VC, in the 1860s, it was once the richest city in the world, home to the Comstock Lode, one of the largest silver strikes in history. In fact, the gold and silver from VC in the 1860s built all of San Francisco. Today, VC still has wooden boardwalks on C Street, ornate Victorian-era homes, two dozen saloons, a cemetery almost as large as the town itself and an Old West vibe that's admittedly a bit touristy, but undeniably genuine. VC also has the Grand Prix, a 55-year long tradition of dirt bike racing, as wild and rugged as the town itself. Episode 85 documents this year's Grand Prix, in the field on race day, talking with event volunteers and racers with different experience levels to really understand what this race is all about and how compares it to another legendary race on two wheels in a Gold Rush town, the Downieville Classic. 3:00 – Introducing the Virginia City Grand Prix.9:05 – Larry Sussman – getting peer pressured into racing dirt bikes.10:40 – How does the Downieville Classic differ from the VCGP?12:30 – What's more intense, the chaos of a mountain bike race or a moto race?14:20 – Thomas Lay – growing up in Virginia City, getting into dirt bikes and organizing the event.16:50 – How long has the Virginia City Grand Prix been happening?19:00 – How many people race in the VCGP and where do they come from?23:00 – Who owns the land the event is on?27:30 – How long is the race and how are people staged at the start line?30:20 – Talking with Darcy about course design.31:20 – What's the hardest part of this year's course?32:55 – Moving from Truckee to Virginia City and becoming a Nevadan.34:40 – What got Darcy into riding dirt bikes?38:30 – What's the secret to surviving the VCGP?39:31 – Talking with the local legend Josh Wilson about the moto community.44:30 – Talking with Ryan Downing about the racer who passed away on course.46:10 – What's the secret to surviving VCGP?48:04 – How does mountain biking compare to dirt biking?49:30 – How do they stage racers at the start?52:00 – Catching up with Pow Bot and talking about the start of the race.56:10 – Reporting from Chaos Hill on course in the middle of the race.1:01:00 – Would Trail Whisperer ever do the VCGP?1:03:30 – Seth Johnson goes from last to 9th place, passing 400 racers.1:05:15 – Missing the race by a month on Seth's first attempt.1:08:50 – Catching up with Thomas after Day 1.1:13:30 – Beginner riders biting off more than can chew attempting the VCGP.1:17:40 – How did the electric dirt bikes – a Stark Varg – do in the race?1:20:45 – Running into Tobin Ortenblad after the race.1:22:15 – How was the race course and how does it compare to bicycle racing?1:25:55 – What was the start of the race like?1:28:50 – Garmin stats: 20,000 feet of climbing!1:30:00 – How do the Downieville Classic and VCGP compare and differ?1:36:00 – Is there anything the bike community can learn from the moto community?1:44:20 – Is Tobin doing the Lost and Found Gravel Festival?

Send us a text “Will AI take over my job?”  In part 4 of the Understanding Artificial Intelligence series we explore AI as a Co-worker, Tutor and Coach.  All ideas coming from the book by Ethan Mollick, Co-Intelligence - Living and working with AI.  I share how Mollick makes the point that our jobs are made up of different tasks and that AI might be able to help us with the more tedious parts of our tasks and then we can do more of the creative tasks or tasks that we enjoy doing.  I share two different methods that Ethan Mollick mentions in his book regarding AI as a co-worker, the centaur or the cyborg. Then I share how AI might help us with education in a more tutoring role.  Mollick predicts that AI might be able to take over some of the passive roles of education while our teachers are involved in engaging students actively in the classroom.  And lastly how the LLMs might be able to assist us in our expertise training as a coach.  Adding an additional layer of feedback as we go from formal education to on the job training.  For transcripts and sources got to www.findingthefloor.com/ep235 I would love to hear from you! Send us a text “Large Language Models or LLMs are simply predicting what words would come next due to all of their learning.”  Prompted by my husband's suggestion I have decided to have a series of episodes dedicated to understanding AI better.  Instead of being scared of AI or simply ignoring it, I use the book, Co-Intelligence, Living and Working with AI by Ethan Mollick.   Part one of this series is just a basic understanding of how the large language model came to be, like ChatGPT.  I talk about the idea of a digital brain. I share how it had its initial learning with millions of words and information and the analogy of an apprentice chef learning to combine ingredients to make recipes.  I then tell of the adding of human feedback to its learning of millions of words that it is learning.  The key to all of this is adding certain weights to certain words to help AI better understand the human language.  For a very complex machine - I try to keep it simple to understand the basics of what it is doing. For show notes go to www.findingthefloor.com/ep231 I would love to hear from you!
