What if finding a few like-minded families near you were as easy as dropping a pin on a map? In this episode, Lisa chats with Morgan Bergstrom—former corporate recruiter, mom of three (soon four!), and creator of BaseCampEd, a free app that helps homeschool and alt-ed families connect locally. Morgan shares her family's journey from full-time daycare to kindergarten at home, the moment the “mini co-op” idea clicked, and why connection—not perfection—keeps families thriving. We talk hybrid options, micro-schools, nature schools, and why you don't have to go “all in” on day one. If you're homeschool-curious (or already homeschooling and craving real-life community), this one's for you. In This Episode Morgan's pivot from 12 years in corporate recruiting to entrepreneurship The origin story of BaseCampEd (and why it'll always be free for parents) Moving every 2–3 years: building community fast in a new city Hybrid/alt-ed options: co-ops, micro-schools, nature & farm schools, STEM programs How to “test drive” homeschooling without going all-in Socialization myths vs. real connection Why homeschooling pairs naturally with entrepreneurship Key Takeaways You don't need 100 people—just a few good families you connect with. Try before you leap: add a small reading/math kit after dinner or on weekends. Use tools (like BaseCampEd) to find local groups, events, and alt-ed resources. Give your kids the gift of time: true literacy & critical thinking don't require 6 hours at a table. Quotables “I wanted a Zillow for homeschoolers: pull up a map, click the dots, read profiles, and connect.” —Morgan “You don't have to be ‘all in' on day one. In Part 2 of the episode on the Private SNAFU video series, we recount the various trials and tribulations of developing training modules for organizational use. What kinds of media and approaches would be most effective and most efficient, given the increasing breadth and complexity of workplace rules and policies that need to be socialized among the workforce?
For this year's movie episode, we elected to take on a video series used during World War II to help socialize US Army rules and procedures among forces either deployed or getting ready to deploy. Private SNAFU was a series of black-and-white animated shorts of three to five minutesin length recounting various misadventures of the title character as he goes to war. We will examine these videos from an organizational studies perspective.
Private SNAFU was a series of black-and-white animated shorts of three to five minutes in length recounting various misadventures of the title character as he goes to war. The purpose of the training videos was to socialize and reinforce the importance of adherence existing US Army policies and procedures and helping to introduce soldiers to potential hazards and challenges that they would face in combat. Produced by Warner Bros. using a Looney Tunes animation style, the shorts used comedy to get the points across that failing to adhere to the rules would compromise the mission and likely get oneself killed or seriously injured. We examine these videos through an organizational socialization lens – how to impart the needed rules and regulations to a large number of homesick and nervous soldiers and make the messages stick?

Irene Castagnotto: Timing Is Everything - Learning When Agile Teams Are Ready for Change Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. Irene shares a powerful story about discovering team dependencies and proposing solutions that management initially rejected. When her team identified that Epics weren't organized to avoid dependencies between teams, they proposed using a single unified backlog to manage these challenges. Despite the logical solution, management wasn't ready to accept it. A month later, the same management team returned with the identical proposal. This experience taught Irene that timing is crucial in change management—you don't decide when the right time is; the people involved determine their own readiness. She emphasizes the importance of socializing changes early and often, collecting feedback before proposing major transformations, especially when those changes affect management structures. Self-reflection Question: How do you balance persistence with patience when you know a change is needed but the organization isn't ready to embrace it? [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

Socialization tells us that happiness comes from hitting the right milestones—prestigious career, perfect body, ideal partner. Today's episode is an extra special pep talk for anyone homeschooling—or considering homeschooling—neurodivergent kids. If you've ever felt doubtful, heard wild myths, or just wanted some validation, this one is for you! Episode Spotlight: Myth Busting Neurodivergent Homeschooling Have you heard these before? “Neurodivergent kids need experts, not parents.” “Homeschooled kids won't be socialized.” “They'll have too many gaps or fall behind.” “Homeschooling will make anxiety or emotional struggles worse.” “You have to do it alone.” We'll tackle these five myths through research, stories, and straight-from-the-heart encouragement. Here's what you need to know: You Are Your Child's Best Teacher No one knows your child like you do. Yes, experts are great support, but YOU are the one who can tailor learning to their specific needs every day. Socialization? More Like Social Flourishing Forget the outdated worries. Homeschoolers are out in the world—community, classes, clubs, and new friends, both in-person and online. Social learning happens in real, meaningful ways. No More Fear of Gaps Every graduate (homeschooled or not) leaves school with gaps. Homeschooling lets your kids shine where they excel and grow where they need help, all at their own pace. Individualized learning = thriving. A Gentler Path for Emotional Well-Being Home can be a healing, safe space where neurodivergent kids feel seen and supported. Emotional safety comes first—academic growth comes naturally from there. You Are Not Alone This journey comes with challenges. But you're not meant to do it solo. This episode originally aired in April 2024 and quickly became one of the most popular episodes of The Journey. Whether you're tuning in for the first time or revisiting this conversation, this episode will get you thinking about healing in a toxic culture. In this episode, Morgan DeBaun sits down with renowned physician, author, and trauma expert, Dr. Gabor Maté, for a thought-provoking conversation about childhood trauma and attachment, the impact of societal norms on parenting, and the healing potential of psychedelics. In this episode: 00:00 Introduction and Guest Overview 01:30 Dr. Gabor Maté's Early Life and Trauma 04:08 Impact of Early Trauma on Adult Behavior 04:56 The Struggles of a Medical Professional 08:22 Parenting Challenges in Modern Society 13:21 The Importance of Attachment in Child Development 21:30 Balancing Entrepreneurship and Parenting 24:03 Building Strong Parent-Child Relationships 24:38 The Impact of Technology on Children 25:36 Balancing Work and Parenting 28:51 The Importance of Secure Attachment 29:49 Understanding Individuation and Socialization 36:40 The Role of Psychedelics in Healing 45:16 Resources and Final Thoughts Dr. Maté opens up about his own childhood experiences as a Jewish infant in occupied Hungary, where abandonment and trauma shaped his early years and later influenced his relationships with his children and career. Through personal reflection, Morgan shares her own experiences of growing up with a father whose demanding career kept him often away, and her tendency towards workaholism. She shares how she intends to do things differently with her own child. As the discussion unfolds, Dr. Maté dives into his belief that we are living in a toxic culture, where stress and societal pressures take a toll on our mental and physical health. He highlights the direct link between our minds and bodies, particularly evident in marginalized groups facing systemic racism. Dr. Maté and Morgan discuss how it is in this context that parents are expected to raise children, and how cultural parenting norms often contradict intuitive caregiving practices, driven by economic necessities rather than emotional well-being. The episode wraps up with an eye-opening discussion on the potential of psychedelics in healing trauma, with Dr. Maté sharing the emerging research and the need for better access to these powerful tools in mental health care. Send us a textRacial socialization competency refers to a parent's or caregiver's ability to communicate with their kids about race and to impart strategies for coping with racial discrimination, and the research shows that higher levels of competency are associated with better outcomes for Black children and youth. For this third Black History Month episode of Talking About Kids, I asked Dr. Riana Elyse Anderson to explain racial socialization competency, its components, and how it can be developed. Riana is an Associate Professor at Columbia University's School of Social Work and the developer of the EMBRace (Engaging, Managing, and Bonding through Race) program, racial socialization skills training for parent and caregivers. More information about Riana and the EMBRace program is at talkingaboutkids.com.
