The Compendium Podcast: An Assembly of Fascinating and Intriguing Things
In this episode of The Compendium, we unravel the twisted tale of Michael Alig: The Club Kid King Who Killed for Fame. At the height of New York nightlife, Alig built an empire of excess, flamboyance, and infamy, transforming the Limelight nightclub into a hedonistic playground where anything—and everything—was possible. But behind the glitter and glamour lurked a dark undercurrent of drug-fueled chaos, manipulation, and ultimately, murder. We dive deep into the rise and fall of Michael Alig and the Club Kids, the role of Peter Gatien, the shocking Angel Melendez murder, and how a scene built on rebellion spiraled into true crime history. From the neon-drenched dance floors of the 1990s to the gritty reality of New York crime stories, this is the cautionary tale of a subculture that burned too bright—and paid the ultimate price. Jill talks about the case of Michael Alig and the murder of Angel Melendez
This week we look at the life of notorious NYC Club Kid Michael Alig whose partying days came to an abrupt end when he brutally murdered a fellow clubber in cold blood. Enjoy? Brought to you By: The Sonar Network https://thesonarnetwork.com/
Original Club Kid turned high-end fashion designer Richie Rich relives his early days in the San Francisco club scene and being in the Ice Capades with Kristy Yamaguchi and Rudy Galindo. For 15 months after he was released from prison, Michael Alig, also known as the Party Monster, lived with David Maurici. Sour Candy & Chaos chronicles the crazy situations that swirled around Michael Alig during his post-prison return to New York City. This is the story of his new book; SOUR CANDY and CHAOS; My Life with the Party Monster - the aftermath of a True Crime. To watch on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=przpvpS56qwMichael Alig was a notorious figure in the New York City nightlife scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, known as the "King of the Club Kids." These Club Kids included Susanne Bartsch, Ernie Glam (David's husband and Michael's former flatmate), Amanda Lepore, and RuPaul, and created a movement that influenced fashion, art and popular culture. Alig's flamboyant personality and outrageous parties made him a central figure in the city's club culture, characterized by its extravagant costumes and hedonistic atmosphere. However, his fame took a dark turn in 1996 when he was convicted of the m-rder of fellow club kid Andre "Angel" Melendez. Alig and his roommate, Robert "Freeze" Riggs, k-ll-d Melendez in a brutal altercation fueled by drugs. The crime and its subsequent media coverage shocked the public, revealing a dark underside of the seemingly glamorous club scene. After serving 17 years in prison, Alig was released in 2014, but he struggled to reclaim his former notoriety and died of a h-r-in overdose in 2020. Hosted on Acast. Imagine the craziest dance club you've ever been too. Then add in whatever ludicrous, grotesque, comical, disgusting whimsy you can fathom. Multiply that by ten, throw in every drug known to NYC in the ‘80s and ‘90s and you've got an average Wednesday night for Michael Alig. Angel Melendez entered this absurd world and never made it to the exit. Muriel based this episode on three documentaries and a bunch of articles. This week on the show, we discuss the infamous case of Michael Alig, the 90's NYC club promoter known for his flamboyant pageantry and prankish antics that eventually murdered one of his friends, chopped them up in a bathtub and dumbed them in the Hudson River. Not only that, but it all quickly escalated into a full-on media circus as police failed to investigate, rumors ran rampant in the clubs and newspapers, and Alig himself joked about murdering Angel Melendez in public and in interviews. And this was all while Alig was hanging out with legendary icons like Ru Paul, and other zany characters like "James St. James", "Jenny Talia", and "Waltpaper". As grisly and flashy as this case simultaneously was, it's little wonder it was turned into a movie released in 2003 entitled "Party Monster", starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green (and receiving pretty bad reviews overall.) Dressing up in a punkish, sometimes-androgynous aesthetic in the vein of David Bowie, Boy George, Lady Gaga, or the aforementioned Ru Paul, this brash and artistic youth movement of the "Club Kids" began as a jabby satire of the club scene that artist Andy Warhol had produced, but quickly became its own cliche. What began as a vibrant and mostly-positive NYC club scene of alt-kids -- self-proclaimed "Freaks" that were minorities of all kinds (particularly of the LGBTQ+ variety) -- that weren't even doing drugs, eventually descended into an absolute drug-fueled rampage-of-sorts through the NY club scene that led to murder, hubris, blood-soaked club parties, lots of drugs, and a whole lot of regret for a lot of people. This story is absolutely bonkers on every level: to the incubation of a unique sub-culture, to the mind of a deeply flawed and troubled misfit murderer, the circus-like club antics, the proto-LGBTQ+ history, and the absolute abject failure of the NYPD to bring proper justice to the situation in due time. "Well, congratulations on getting out of the very dangerous world of haberdashery!" It's a Disco Bloodbath on the pod this week as we double featured both Party Monster movies with our friend Jesse Krempel host of the podcast Cult Cinema Circle. The documentary, or shall we say "Shockumentary" from 1998, and the 2003 film starring Macaulay Culkin, Seth Green, Chloë Sevigny, Wilmer Valderrama, and Dylan McDermott. Michael Alig's saga of the murder in clubland always fascinated us as young gays, and spoiler alert, at least one of the two entries holds up in its revisit. Long before World of Wonder took over the queer landscape with RuPaul's Drag Race, they made a documentary that looked at the events surrounding the murder of Andre "Angel" Melendez by club promoter and all around sh*t head Micahel Alig, with the help of Robert "Freeze" Riggs that landed them both in prison for 15 years. Former child actor superstar Mac Culkin came out of his 9 year retirement to play Alig in the 2003 indie dramatization of the events. With Seth Green playing the larger than life "celebutante" James St. James, Party Monster felt like event-queer-cinema in the early '00s when represention of gay characters in film was scarse. We reflect on how suprisingly poor the 2003 theatrical version revisits. The casting of Mac and Seth (two cis hetro men) aside, did we just overlook all its flaws when first watching because we were excited for this story being told in a major movie? Topics discussed include the colorful characters chronicled in the Shockumentary, the club kids taking over '90s daytime TV, and did 2000s indie darling Chloë Sevigny have better things she could have been doing than this thankless role? For better or for worse both Party Monsters are a unique snapshot of the club kid era of time gone by. In this week's episode, Aaron and T.J. discuss Party Monster, the 2003 film starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green. Focusing on the infamous Michael Alig, it's a cotton-candy acid trip of a film but, beneath of all of its camp excess there lurks a rich and resonant queer tragedy. In addition to diving into the film, your favorite co-hosts also discuss their own deeply personal relationships to the film.

In March 1996, “King of the Club Kids," promoter Michael Alig, after appearing on TV's Geraldo and on the cover of New York magazine, bashed his friend and DJ Angel Melendez in the head with a hammer. The body was then dismembered and stuffed into a duct-taped cardboard box. Alig proceeded to tell anyone who would listen—including his friends from the raging '90s NYC club scene—what he had done. The problem was, Alig's well-known, over the top, and depraved behavior was such that no one believed him. “Has anyone seen Angel?” “He's dead. I cut him up and put him in that box over in the corner.” To see the full list of contributors, see the show notes at www.disgracelandpod.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Michael Musto steps Behind The Rope. Michael chats about the full trajectory of his career none the least of which was his ahead of its time legendary Village Voice column which included dish, tabloid fodder, celeb accolades and interviews with anyone who was and is everyone. Michael breaks down the process of “outing” Gay Hollywood, the hate he received for it over the years, Rosie, Ellen, Jodie Foster, where Hollywood is today on the subject, the obvious celebs who are still in the closet - oh hey there Missy Elliott and Queen Latifah and why and just who may be slipping under our radar. Did we mention, tabloid fodder? Michael also breaks down his ahead of its time blind item, how he was not only the original blogger but also an ahead of his time influencer who picked some of today's A list names out of obscurity and what he thinks of today's social media culture, famous for being famous, reality tv (did someone say Real Housewives and Kardashians) and the Queen or King of blind items, Deux Moi. Michael also opens up about how one of his blind items led to the investigation and ultimate arrest of now infamous club kid Michael Alig for the death and dismemberment of Angel Melendez. Michael discusses which celebs were the nicest, rudest, most upset at his hold nothing back snarky opinion in print and what current day celeb scandals keep him up at night. As all roads often do, Michael deep dives Madonna - how she, then unknown, prevented him from sound checking with his band, how he predicted she will “never amount to anything” - a statement which still gets him screamed at by M fans globally, Madonna's current social media behavior and whether she is “trying too hard” or once again is just ahead of us all. Finally, we chat about how his friend Andy Warhol would approve of Andy Cohen being deemed the modern day Andy Warhol, how he would have wanted to appear on RHONY and be spending his days doing portraits of our good friend, Countess Luann!! @musto184 @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: LULULEMON - lululemon.com (This Holiday Season Shop The Best Gifts at Lululemon) TALKSPACE - talkspace.com/velvet ($100 Off Your First Month) RAKUTEN - rakuten.com (Or Get The Rakuten App to Start Earning Cash Back Today When You Shop Over 3,500 Stores!) Bissen on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 11am PST 10/04/22 About Bissen - Hot off his second mix compilation album, a continuous US tour, a slew of major label remixes for the likes of M83, Madonna, Depeche Mode, Major Lazer, Jojo and Ruth B, two Beatport Top 10 hits over the last couple year with his project Exostate, and a slew of upcoming releases in the pipelines, German-born, New York residing Georg Bissen has never been busier making his mark in the world of EDM. Bissen has created some of the biggest dancefloor smashers in the club scene in recent years, all while also designing sound presets for Ableton Live, Sample Logic and others, writing music for adverts for some of the world's biggest brands, doing sound design and composing for major TV networks, and running his own music licensing, production and publishing business. Storming the scene almost a decade ago with the now classics "Exhale" and "Quicksand," Bissen has, as a dance music artist and producer, had over a hundred original and remix releases since. These records have been released on some of the biggest, most desired and well-respected labels in the industry, including many of the major label imprints. Always in pursuit of a fist-pumping, "all systems go" attitude, Bissen's sound exhibits an effective blend of tough, energetic beats and grooves, coupled with extremely memorable, big melodic riffs and hooks--proper huge tunes for dancefloors, not armchairs, that have lasting impacts on clubgoers and DJs alike. Bissen creates one club banger after another, from his remix of the Black Eyed Peas #1 song "I Gotta Feeling", which was one of Ibiza's summer anthems of 2009 and received extensive UK BBC Radio1 play, to 2011's "2nite U R Perfect", which was one of the year's most memorable club songs, being featured on German and US FM radio, as well as on DMX, reaching millions of shoppers every day; to 2016's remix of The Chainsmoker's "Don't Let Me Down", which got extensive club and US terrestrial radio play, especially on New York's 103.5 WKTU. 2011 saw Bissen start up his project "Exostate" with singer Jeza for Enhanced Recordings, 2 out of 3 singles released so far reaching the Beatport Top 10. In late 2012, along with long-term collaborator Victor Dinaire, Bissen embarked on doing remixes for major artists and labels, starting with the French art rock band M83's "Steve McQueen", received to much critical acclaim, as well as Major Lazer and Flux Pavilion's "Jah No Partial", which went top 25 on the Billboard club charts. With a remix in 2014 for Bingo Players' “Knock You Out” the duo helped propel the release to #1 on the Billboard Club charts, scoring their first #1 record on that chart. Dinaire and Bissen have since lent their hands to dozens of remixes, helping releases chart in the top 10 of the Billboard Club Play Charts numerous times since 2014, with 5 additional #1s so far. In 2016, Dinaire+Bissen remixed Ruth B "Lost Boy", which went into summer-long regular rotation on terrestrial US radio, including WAPE Jacksonville and KKHH Houston. In 2015, alongside Victor Dinaire, Bissen scored the documentary “Glory Daze: The Life and Times of Michael Alig”, which documents the heyday of New York clubbing in the 90s. The soundtrack is an authentic representation of the classic New York club sound of the mid 1990s. The movie saw a North American release in 2016 and can currently be viewed on all major streaming portals as well as on Netflix. In 2016 Bissen started working closely with renowned DJ Tony Moran. Their collaborative effort has spawned over 2 dozen works, including many original records for Moran, as well as joining together for a few remixes. In September 2012 Bissen celebrated the 100th episode of his radioshow and podcast "TranceAtlantic" live at the National Underground in New York. The 8-hour event was broadcast live on ETN.fm. TranceAtlantic is well past its 300th episode now, and is currently broadcast weekly on iHeartRadio, ETN.fm, 1Mix Radio, Party 103, Interference Radio and Party 107, with more syndications forthcoming. A full-time music professional, Bissen has written and collaborated on close to two thousand pieces of music and projects in his decade-long music career. Michael Alig, or you may know him better as Party Monster, was crowned king of the Club Kids back in the late 80's/early 90's. You may have heard of the club kids, some famous examples today are Bjork, Amanda Lepore, and Ru Paul. They ruled the streets of Manhattan when the streetlights came on and partied the night away. Michael would throw these elaborate parties with crazy performers, wild themes and loads of drugs but it wouldn't take long for the Club Kid scene to come crashing down to the ground. By the end two club kids would become murderers and one of their own, Angel Melendez would be the one killed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Jane and Brandon have a frank discussion about the cult classic starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green. While they touch on the movie, they also discuss a documentary made by the same filmmakers called Party Monster: The Shockumentary. They spend a good amount of time covering how a tragic story about Angel Melendez, who's life was cut short, is overshadowed by the narcissistic Michael Alig's life who couldn't stand for the spotlight to be on anyone else.
Andrew speaks with former chippendale John Lepine. John was friends with Michael Alig, New York's 'Party Monster', before he would be convicted of murder. John speaks about hanging out with Michael, doing drugs with the original club kids and what Michael was like after he got out of prison, before he passed away from an overdose.www.unforbiddentruthpodcast.

We're back with a packed episode! Also, our bff EDIE is back on the pod today, woohoo! We start out in New York City 1996 with Kevin's True Crime Story. He tells us all about the tragic killing of Angel Melendez, one of the iconic Club Kids of the New York party scene. Before this gruesome death, The Club Kids were a brash, in-your-face, fabulous, party machine full of misfits, weirdos, and queers, including RuPaul, James St. James, Angel Melendez, Amanda Lepore and Lady Bunny. Anyone else who didn't fit in during the daytime was invited to the party. Unfortunately, drugs, an excess of debauchery, and Rudy Giuliani led to the downfall of queer nightlife. But the gruesome killing of Angel by Club Kid impresario Michael Alig and his friend Freeze Riggs shocked everyone. It's not for the faint of heart. Then, for the Spoopy Story, Miss takes us to 1848 Hydesville, NY to tell us about the Fox Sisters and their spiritualist abilities. Well, they weren't so much 'abilities' as scams, but for a long while, they made their money. Source notes found at www.creepyinqueeriespod.com. Follow us on Instagram @CreepyInQueeriesPod. This week we're on episode 3 of our 1990's the Deadliest Decade coverage with : Death of an Angel. It was 1996 and NYC Club kids were running the party scene. Michael Alig was the king of club promotion and everyone who was anyone was at his party. Andre Melendez, a pier queen at the time, was sucked into the club kid life by Michael Alig and was soon selling every synthetic drug imaginable. Everyone knew if you saw two large angel wings that Andre "Angel" Melendez was there to keep the party going. That is until he disappeared. Club kids were noticing that Angel hadn't been at the party for a few weeks.... and then body parts were discovered Staten Island. Were they Angels? Who would kill kill him? Was drugs involved? Listen to this weeks episode to find out!! And get the most important question answered-- Does Dolly Parton has fully sleeved tattoo'd arms?.. The world will never know.
Today Cody and Matt conclude their premiere week with the first crime story of the season. They get things started talking about the volatile stock market and whether one of them has made it big on the Gamestop stocks. They then transition into talking about the Club Kids and how many well known LGBTQ members of today were a part of this late 80's early 90's group that ruled the night life in NYC. That era of out of control fun and drugs led to the ring leader of the Club Kids Michael Alig mudering Andre "Angel" Melendez. The twist and turns made for a perfect true life becomes a movie story. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-coma-cast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-coma-cast/support
We're talking about the “fabulous but true tale of murder in clubland,” Disco Bloodbath. Later re-printed as Party Monster, this non-linear, Ketamine-infused true crime novel paints an abstract picture of the Club Kids and details the horrific murder of Andre “Angel” Melendez by scene leader, Michael Alig. This book has absolutely everything you could want from a queer text... and also some things you might not want want. We talk about how we as queer people can integrate the fabulousness with the grotesque and how we can maintain our bonds without the trauma. Also we talk about Ketamine. Michael Alig was an American club promoter and convicted felon. He was the self proclaimed "King of the Club Kids," a group of young New York City clubgoers who became a cultural phenomenon in the late 1980s and early 1990s through their flamboyant costumes and their excessive use of party drugs. In March 1996, Alig and his roommate, Robert D. "Freeze" Riggs, killed fellow Club Kid Andre "Angel" Melendez in a confrontation over amongst other things, a delinquent drug debt. The pair then dismembered the body and disposed of Melendez's remains in the Hudson River, where they were later discovered by children playing on a beach in Staten Island. We discuss Kevin's first-hand account of 9/11 as well as the “forgotten crash” of American Airlines Flight 587 in Rockaway, Queens less than two months after the terrorist attacks.
