On this Episode of I art Asheville, we had the pleasure of chatting with amazing musician and local producer Connor Golden! Connor is the one who created our intro music for the show which hopefully you’ve heard by now, so I jumped at the prospect to have e him come chat! There was a lot of firsts in this episode including this being our first Musician feature where we premiered some of Connor’s brand new music. It was an awesome episode in so many ways! Connor graduated from the Frost school of music at the University of Miami, a prestigious program, arguably one of the best music schools in the country, and man does it show in his style and production value. Connor and I have been friends for close to a year now since he moved up here and there are so many cool things that led us to our current friendship and lend to his amazing story of how he got here to Asheville, man what a ride! You’ve really got to listen to this whole thing because it is a wild and amazing story! Our discussion started with us chatting about his wizardry on a fairly obscure instrument called the Linnstrument: basically, an amazing piece of technology that allows musicians to play with octaves in a digital manner. Hopefully that helps paint the picture a little bit. Having seen this thing and witnessing him play it in person, you have just got to go check out what it is and how he plays it over o his Instagram! It’s so cool! Now, this particular instrument coupled with an absolutely tragic incident where Connor became an amputee, has played a pivotal role in Connor’s journey here, and without giving away too much of the story, hearing the sequence of events and hearing Connor’s optimism about the scenario kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole show! Such an amazing story! And no surprise that his musicianship and skillset in the industry has landed him with a job at the world-renowned Moog factory here in Asheville. So of course, we chatted about that. And Connor and I have a really cool story of how we met, and it was really cool to relive that as well. This one is packed with Synchronistic magic and the funkiest of tunes! I really hope you all enjoy this one! Thank you so much for listening! Please Like, Subscribe and Follow! Roger Linn (@roger_linn) gave us new ideas about musical instruments, detailing how wonderful expressive control, 3D buttons, and keyscanning can be. Roger’s company is Roger Linn Design. We talked extensively about the LinnStrument, some about the AdrenaLinn for guitar, and only a little bit about the analog drum machine Tempest. A key matrix circuit is a popular way to handle a large number of buttons but it falls prey to n-key rollover. Roger adds force sense resistors to this (FSR example at Sparkfun). If you have an idea for an instrument, Roger has already written his response to your request for a prototype. Roger gave a keynote address at ADC '16 about the LinnStrument, including showing the sounds it can make. OHMI Trust is the one handed musical instrument society enabling music making for everyone. Roger mentioned some other expressive instruments including: Roli Seaboard Haken Continuum Madrona Labs Soundplane Eigenharp

Roger Linn is a Grammy award winning electronic musical instrument designer, whose instruments have had a major influence on the music industry. He designed the first drum machine with samples. His MPC60 revolutionized the sampling and hip hop community. Today, his LinnStrument is ushering in a new generation of expressive electronic musicianship. It was an honor to speak with the legendary Roger Linn. I could immediately sense his passion for his work. Roger shared a lot about his background and what motivates him to continue his work. Despite his deep work in the technological aspect of the craft, Roger maintains a firm grasp on the love of music that continues to inspire his work today.

Tim Thompson first came on my radar back in the day - he created a development system called KeyKit which allowed for interesting sequencer creation through focused coding. It was one of the first times I'd experienced a system that was clearly set up for "creative coding", and I was intrigued. In the intervening years, I've continued to run into him at various times, and he always seemed to be showing a new invention. I ran into him again last year, and got a chance to experience his "Space Palette" - a system that he describes as "mousepads in space". It's an apt description, but doesn't imply the outright fun that it is to play with it - especially when paired with some of Tim's unique sound and video performance tools. Now, as you will hear, Tim is working with Roger Linn on software for the Linnstrument - the result seems equally fun and interesting. You can check out more of Tim's work at these links: His website: nosuch.com His YouTube page: Tim Thompson's YouTube Page Enjoy the interview, and check out his work!
