Roger Linn joins the conversation in this exclusive interview on Beatppl Podcast episode 69. More on Roger Linn... In 1988, he designed the innovative MPC60 MIDI Production Center for the Japanese Akai Company, with his signature appearing on the product's front panel. Combining a sampling drum machine with a real-time MIDI sequencer, this product gradually became the industry standard in the production of hip-hop, dance and related music styles throughout the 1990s, and has been credited as a significant influence in the evolution of hip hop music. This was followed in 1994 with the enhanced MPC3000 and others. In addition to these designs for Akai, he also helped design products for a variety of companies during the 1990s, including the Japanese Roland company. https://www.rogerlinndesign.com/ Be sure to like, share and subscribe -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Latest Beatppl products - https://beatppl.com/collections/new -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for watching BeatPPL Podcast Be sure to cop exclusive BeatPPL sample packs and T-shirts here https//www.beatppl.com Follow on IG https//www.instagram.com/beatppl Join in the Modbap conversation on FB https://www.facebook.com/groups/ModBa... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Be sure to follow and subscribe to our panelist's social channels Corry / Bboytech http://www.youtube.com/bboytechreport https://www.instagram.com/bboytechreport http://www.bboytechreport.com Ken Flux Pierce https://www.instagram.com/flux302 http://www.youtube.com/fluxwithit http://www.fluxwithit.com Upright https://www.instagram.com/upr1ght/ Daniel Steele https://www.instagram.com/danielsteel... http://www.dstlproductions.com

This episode features veteran musician, Christian Olde Wolbers. Christian’s credits include playing bass for Fear Factory, Powerflo, and Vio-lence, amongst countless others. We’ll discuss trying to turn Mr. X to the Z Xzibit into a metal artist, having your influencers become your peers, hunting vinyl records while on the road, and a whole lot more.
Roger Linn (@roger_linn) gave us new ideas about musical instruments, detailing how wonderful expressive control, 3D buttons, and keyscanning can be. Roger’s company is Roger Linn Design. We talked extensively about the LinnStrument, some about the AdrenaLinn for guitar, and only a little bit about the analog drum machine Tempest. A key matrix circuit is a popular way to handle a large number of buttons but it falls prey to n-key rollover. Roger adds force sense resistors to this (FSR example at Sparkfun). If you have an idea for an instrument, Roger has already written his response to your request for a prototype. Roger gave a keynote address at ADC '16 about the LinnStrument, including showing the sounds it can make. OHMI Trust is the one handed musical instrument society enabling music making for everyone. Roger mentioned some other expressive instruments including: Roli Seaboard Haken Continuum Madrona Labs Soundplane Eigenharp

This week, we look at the effect the Akai MPC had on music production. We evaluate Roger Linn's genius in designing more user-friendly interfaces. We trace back its history to this day, with the rapid growth of the Maschine movement. In the second portion of this podcast, we talk about possibly the most important MPC user of all times: Detroit's J Dilla. We talk about how he used the MPC, how its limitations unlocked Dilla's creative genius, and we also talk about sampling and crate-digging as an art form.Support the show (https://delicatebeats.com/collections/all)
Roger Linn is a Grammy award winning electronic musical instrument designer, whose instruments have had a major influence on the music industry. He designed the first drum machine with samples. His MPC60 revolutionized the sampling and hip hop community. Today, his LinnStrument is ushering in a new generation of expressive electronic musicianship. It was an honor to speak with the legendary Roger Linn. I could immediately sense his passion for his work. Roger shared a lot about his background and what motivates him to continue his work. Despite his deep work in the technological aspect of the craft, Roger maintains a firm grasp on the love of music that continues to inspire his work today. There are many people that we've heard about through the history of electronic music device development: David Smith, Roger Linn, Ikutaru Kakehashi and others. But there are many people that are less heralded - but still critical to the game. Denis Labrecque is one of those people: as a marketer/developer/designer, he was involved in the music industry well before MIDI made its mark, continuing through the MIDI/computer age, and continuing now into more compact and focused hybrid devices. Denis has gotten a chance to see it all. In our chat, we mostly focus on Denis' history within the industry, starting with Star Instruments (designers of the Synare), to Passport Designs (which started off working on Apple II computers, but quickly jumped on the MIDI wagon), to Emu and then Analog Devices. He has always worked a bit in the background, but anyone that has been at a tradeshow will probably have bumped into him over the years. He has worked on many of the things that make our musical world possible, and it was amazing to hear his stories of those efforts. Enjoy this wild ride through the MI industry roller coaster, and take some time to learn more about the people that made - and sometimes broke! - the world we inhabit. NOTE: This podcast is presented as a collaboration with Synthtopia.com for the presentation of people working with and creating expressive MIDI controllers. You can listen to the podcast here, on the synthtopia website (in an embedded player) or on iTunes. But you can also read the article as well as search for information by viewing the transcription available here: http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2016/11/27/roger-linn-mpe-interview/ Roger Linn is one of my Music Tech heroes. His development of the sampling drum machine has defined a significant portion of my musical life, and I still surround myself with tools that he designed or helped develop. In this podcast, Roger and I get to chat a little about how he got started (including his design process for the MPC, which is a little mind-blowing!), his current mission to replace on/off switches and how he perceives his own future. He also gives us some real-life example of the value of expressiveness in MIDI controllers, and talks about the musical implications of this effort. I was blown away by Roger's relaxed attitude about these incredibly genre-altering creations, but he's the first to admit that it's the musicians, not the gear-builders, that make the difference. But in the meantime, he's out there obsessing for the good of us artists, and I couldn't be more excited. Enjoy!

Tim Thompson first came on my radar back in the day - he created a development system called KeyKit which allowed for interesting sequencer creation through focused coding. It was one of the first times I'd experienced a system that was clearly set up for "creative coding", and I was intrigued. In the intervening years, I've continued to run into him at various times, and he always seemed to be showing a new invention. I ran into him again last year, and got a chance to experience his "Space Palette" - a system that he describes as "mousepads in space". It's an apt description, but doesn't imply the outright fun that it is to play with it - especially when paired with some of Tim's unique sound and video performance tools. Now, as you will hear, Tim is working with Roger Linn on software for the Linnstrument - the result seems equally fun and interesting. You can check out more of Tim's work at these links: His website: nosuch.com His YouTube page: Tim Thompson's YouTube Page Enjoy the interview, and check out his work!
