When it comes to toxic exposure, radon is something that is often overlooked; even though it's a known carcinogen. When it comes to toxic exposure, radon is something that is often overlooked; even though it's a known carcinogen.Radon is the number-one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and the second leading cause of cancer among smokers. It's becoming such an issue, that lung cancer is now surpassing breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death in women. The tricky part is that radon is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Most people won't test for a toxin if there is not an immediately recognizable threat. Recent reports cited granite counter tops as a culprit. While there is some validity to this, it's often not the main problem. Radon is a gas; a byproduct of the decomposition of uranium (which is found naturally in the soil). It creeps up through the cracks in the lowest levels of homes and other structures. How can you protect yourself and your family members?Test your home. Some helpful resources include the website sosradon.org, as well as the American Lung Association. Tests are affordable and you can do them yourself.Certified Green Building Professional, Lisa Beres, joins host Andrea Donsky to explain the dangers of radon, as well as simple yet effective ways to test your home.

This show has many great segments, but the feature is a powerful one with Osprey Orielle Lake, Founder of WECAN (Women Earth and Climate Action Network), who talks about indigenous women around the globe that are standing up for climate action and climate justice. Other segments include Green Dude Mike Nowak on a recycling rant; the Creative Vegetable Gardener on choosing seeds for spring planting; Lisa Beres, of Ron & Lisa about improving indoor air quality; and sorry about the vegetarian Valentine's menu segment, the volume on Diana Rice is way too low and couldn't be fixed. It's only that segment tho. :(
Lisa Beres of Ron & Lisa talks about indoor air quality, which is especially important during the winter months when many of our homes are shut up tight against the cold. She offers some great remedies, including houseplants that help.
Something as simple as a Gerber Daisy can significantly improve your indoor air quality.Marketing tactics have misled many people to believe that air fresheners work to clean the air around you. But, these fresheners don't actually clean air. They just mask the odors in your air with synthetic chemicals, which can cause irritation to your nose, throat, eyes, and skin. This can become problematic when you consider that approximately 90 percent of your time is spent indoors. It's essential that your indoor air is fresh and free of toxins, and plants are one way you can achieve that. The NASA Clean Air Study identified the top plants you can use to improve your indoor air quality. While a total of 50 plants were given accolades for this ability, some of the more common plants included the following:Bamboo PalmSnake PlantAreka PalmSpider PlantPeace LilyGerber DaisyChrysanthemumHow many plants do you need? According to Certified Green Building Professional, Lisa Beres, it's best to have about one plant for every 100 square feet. The good news is, many of the plants on NASA's list are affordable. The benefits expand beyond your home as well. Plants can create healthier air in hospital rooms, office cubicles, and hair or nail salons.Listen in as Beres joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to share more about what's lurking in your indoor air, as well as the specific plants you can use to address poor air quality.
Another big show full of eco-marvelous and important information. Our feature is with Amy Ziff, Founder of Made Safe, an organization working to help create a labeling system for those who wish to live a non-toxic lifestyle. Other segments include a GD Foodie-Phile segment with the Hungry Gopher on making homemade kimchi; GDs @ Home with Lisa Beres on Mold (ick); an Eco-Sexy segment with Veronica Monet and much more.
Yikes! Lisa Beres of Ron & Lisa talks to us about mold -- how it occurs in our homes, why we need to be concerned, and what we can do about it.
Most (if not all) conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain harmful chemicals and other toxic ingredients.Your body absorbs 60 percent of what you put on it, and that includes your deodorant or antiperspirant. Unfortunately, most (if not all) conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain harmful chemicals and other toxic ingredients... some of which have been linked to cancer, birth defects, skin irritation, allergies, and more. These ingredients include:Aluminum: Clogs your pores and has been linked to breast cancer and higher risk of Alzheimer's disease. Parabens: Hormone disruptors linked to early puberty and hormonal cancers, including breast cancer.Propylene Glycol: Damages your nervous system, liver, and heart. Main ingredient in antifreeze.Fragrance: Can hide hundreds of chemicals, including phthalates. Sweating is good for your body, because it helps you eliminate these toxins. But, if you're using conventional deodorants and antiperspirants, you're putting those chemicals back in just as fast.If you're looking for a non-toxic deodorant, beware of the word "natural." This term is not overseen by any authoritative source. Instead, look for Certified Organic (not just "organic").Certified Green Building Professional, Lisa Beres, joins Naturally Savvy hosts Andrea and Lisa to share more about the dangers of toxic deodorants, as well as some specific brands she loves to use as an alternative.
There are so many hidden toxins that you bring into your home during the holidays, from artificial trees to synthetic fragrances. There are so many hidden toxins that you bring into your home during the holidays, from artificial trees to synthetic fragrances. Even the cookware you use to make all your holiday feasts and goodies can contain harmful chemicals.Lisa Beres, Certified Green Building Professional, joins Naturally Savvy hosts, Andrea Donsky and Lisa Davis, to discuss which toxins are infiltrating your home and how you can avoid them. Here are her best tips:Artificial trees are made with polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which contains lead and other dangerous chemicals. These chemicals can get into the dust in the air, so even if you're not constantly touching the tree, there is a residual effect. While real trees are a great option, they can harbor pollen, mold and other airborne irritants that some individuals simply cannot tolerate. In that case, you can look for a "PE" tree, made with non-toxic polyethylene.Remember to continually damp dust and wipe any ornaments or decorations that you're pulling out of closets or the attic... again, dust is the main conduit for indoor air pollution.Poinsettias are exceptional at removing formaldehyde from indoor air, so make sure you place a few of them around your home.Watch out for scented fragrances (candles, scented sprays) and avoid paraffin wax candles, which are petroleum-based. Look for candles made of soy or beeswax, and ones that are scented with essential oils.Don't forget to change your furnace filters as well and invest in an air purifier; both are quite affordable.Listen in as Beres shares even more tips for creating a healthy holiday home.
Many conventional toothpastes contain toxic ingredients, some of which have been linked to cancer. You know how important it is to brush your teeth and have overall good dental and oral health. But, many conventional toothpastes contain toxic ingredients. Lisa Beres, Certified Green Building Professional, discusses the top five toxins you should avoid in terms of your oral and dental care.Fluoride: very toxic when ingested at high levels. Saccharine: a sweetener that has been linked to bladder cancer among other health issues.Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS): has been known to cause microscopic tears in mouth (which can lead to canker sores).Carrageenan: linked to gastrointestinal inflammation and ulcers. Propylene Glycol: main active ingredient in anti-freeze that's used to soften cosmetic products. It has been linked to damage to the central nervous system, liver, and heart. The dangers can also reach beyond these toxins. The average toothbrush can contain 10 million bacteria, including E. coli and staph. Listen in as Beres joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to share more about toxic toothpastes, as well as some healthy and safe alternatives.
So, here's another great marketing lie - fluoride is good for you. Lisa Beres of Ron & Lisa talks about why we need to ditch the fluoride.
Lisa Beres, of Ron and Lisa The Healthy Home Team, offers us some excellent healthy home hacks (that save money too!).
RoundUp is the number-one herbicide being used today, despite being linked to diseases like cancer.RoundUp is the number-one herbicide being used today, and it's remained the herbicide of choice because it's extremely effective at killing weeds in gardens, lawns and even agricultural fields. However, it's been linked to both acute health conditions, as well as serious diseases like cancer. Monsanto is the creator of RoundUp, and it comes as no surprise that the company has also been behind a number of other toxic elements from our past and current environments (Agent Orange, DDT, PCBs, Bovine Growth Hormone, and even the Atomic Bomb).Glyphosate is the active ingredient in RoundUp, which has been linked specifically to Parkinson's disease and cancer. Another ingredient, POEA, is toxic to embryos, and can suffocate embryonic and placental cells. What are some natural alternatives to RoundUp?Vinegar mixed with natural dish soap will burn the foliage and lower the pH in the soil so the weeds won't grow back. Corn meal gluten is also a great option, as are a variety of essential oils. You can also tailor your landscaping to be conducive to fewer weeds by using native plants.Lisa Beres, Certified Green Building Professional, joins host Lisa Davis to share more about the dangers of RoundUp, as well as some effective natural alternatives.
