On today's episode of “The Building Code,” Zach and Charley are talking to Casey Grey, founder and CEO of The Conscious Builder, a custom home and renovation company in Ontario, Canada. Casey took an early interest in the construction industry starting his career in renovations at the age of 17 before starting his own company at 24. His focus then became building net-zero homes and educating others on the importance of creating healthy living environments. Listen to the full episode to hear more about what it means to build net-zero homes and how to educate homeowners on the benefits. The idea of net-zero homes is still fairly new. How does your process work with educating clients on the benefits and choosing the options that work best for them? “We put out so much content to help educate people. It's up to us to give the clients the options so that they can make a decision that's best for them because there are so many factors. There are all sorts of products out there that are better for the environment. But usually, those products are a lot more expensive, too. So, what's most important to that individual, to the person that we're building for? Based on what's important to them, we'll make recommendations for the wall assembly or what products to use and so forth. But at the end of the day, it's not up to us. And we're not building for everybody, but we're using the experience and the knowledge that we have to help teach other people so that they can ask better questions when they go to buy their house. They can go to their builder and ask for specific things. A lot of people who reach out to us have watched a lot of our videos.” What is your focus when building a net-zero home? “Where we really focus on is really for the house itself and the health, the comfort, the benefits to the homeowner. Because at the end of the day, you still want to build a healthy indoor air quality, like a healthy environment for people living in the house because we spend like 90% of our time inside. Depending on where you live, could be more, could be less. But most of our time is spent indoors. Obviously, we live at home, and now most of us are working at home. So, we really focus on, "Okay, what do we have to do?" By default, when you build a healthy and comfortable home, you build a more efficient home, which in turn helps everything else that people say it's affecting the climate. That's where we're at.” LINKS AND MORE Related content: The Conscious Builder resources: Visit The Conscious Builder Academy and use code BT15 to get 15% off any course. #058 – Business, like life, has lots of uncertainties. And Casey Grey grew up accustomed to these uncertainties as a child of parents who went through divorce and remarriage four times. As the founder of The Conscious Builder, Casey believes that to be something more, one must learn how to weather uncertainties from different life aspects. Here, Casey talks about his favorite quote, what he learned from his child, why routines are necessary for entrepreneurs, and how The Conscious Builder keeps homes fresh and sustainable with ERVs.IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN:· The quality of your life is in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty that you can live with· How did The Conscious Builder come to be?· Casey Grey on the significance of routines· What makes sustainable homes?· The cheaper options are more expensive in the long-runCHECK OUT CASEY GREY:Growing up, Casey was always building - everything from Lego to tree forts. From his father, he learned the importance of teamwork through competitive team sports. From his mother, he learned the value of hard work and dedication as he watched her grow and eventually sell her business. When Casey started his construction career at the age of 17, he put his childhood lessons to work and never looked back. When Casey first started his construction company, it was just like every other company. He just wanted to do good work and make a good living. It was not until he and his wife, Natasha, attended their first Tony Robbins event in 2012 that his mindset shifted, and he started to ask himself, "Why?" Then, when he and Natasha found out they had a child, everything clicked. If he was going to tell this child that he could do anything he wanted and become whoever he wanted, he would have to lead by example. He wanted his son to be proud of him and look up to him. He wanted to be the hero in his son's eyes. That's when The Conscious Builder was born.FREE GIFT FROM GUEST:https://www.consciousbuilderacademy.com/course/top-5-things-starting-construction-businessBuzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge talks to the CEO and founder of https://www.theconsciousbuilder.com/ (The Conscious Builder) and https://www.consciousbuilderacademy.com/ (The Conscious Builder Academy), Casey Grey. The Conscious Builder, based out of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada, was created on the premise that you should always strive to be a conscientious leader in your space. Casey shares that he founded his business because ultimately, he wants to make a positive impact on the life of everyday people. He set out to lead his business with intention, integrity, and with careful and conscious thought. The Conscious Builder stands out, first and foremost, because it's consumer focused. They put out what they wish to attract and tell their prospects that they resonate with their goals. Casey designed his business so he could work with his ideal customers and grow organically through that. Casey and his team wanted to get their ideology out there and share their message of conscientiousness with the market. He explains that The Conscious Builder Academy was the next logical step in his business journey. He wanted to help other contractors become successful. With the home boom that's happened in a market that is changing and growing constantly, it's vital to stay up to date when it comes to operating your construction or contracting business strategically. Between price increases across the board, labor and supply shortages, and uncertain supply chain issues, difficult conversations with clients are on the horizon. The Conscious Builder Academy helps contractors tackle these issues and more. According to their website, The Conscious Builder Academy is an online school for empowering builders who want to build strong, resilient businesses and better, more efficient buildings.Their website offers courses, toolkits, templates, and more in order to help contractors future-proof their businesses, step by step. Casey also shares that The Conscious Builder Academy will also be launching a Discord server soon to stay connected with their community directly. The Conscious Builder Academy offers an amazing array of courses for contractors. They offer a conflict resolution toolkit, courses on selling passive houses, increasing profit, managing clients, priming tough conversations with clients, and more. Casey shares that the conflict resolution toolkit especially is quite impactful – and would have greatly helped him in his own lawsuit years ago had he known then what he shares in this kit. Commodities will be hit especially hard by Russia's invasion, Carrick said, given Ukraine's position as a leading source of wheat, potash and other agricultural materials. Carrick also referred to the idea that generals often fight the previous war when new approaches are required, and that the extensive sanctions Canada, the United States and may European states have imposed against Russia are a new and different form of economic combat. On this episode of the Construction Record podcast, digital media editor Warren Frey speaks with The Conscious Builder founder and CEO Casey Grey about his firm's efforts to create more sustainable construction practices. Grey said his firm's main areas of focus are retrofits and high-performance homes. The majority of buildings in Ottawa, where the company is based, are based on a wood frame with drywall and the technology and building science hasn't substantially changed in a century, he said. The Conscious Builder focuses on ventilation and energy use up to and including Passive House standards and net-zero energy. The company also hosts a Youtube channel where Grey educates the public on sustainability as applied to home construction. Josh Friesen is part owner of Duek Builders https://www.dueckbuilders.com/ Dueck Builders had its beginnings as Dueck Homes when Cal Dueck began building custom homes in 2006 in his neighbourhood of Fort Garry. We are nearing our first year of the podcast and it is hard to believe that we are now on episode 48. Casey Grey with @the_conscious_builder joined us from Ottawa, Canada. Casey has an incredible mindset and view on business. Psychology was a major topic in our discussion and one of my favorite comments he made was that our environment is more impactful than our willpower. His analogy was, “if I want to stop eating junk food, than quick buying junk food.” Our environment, network and who we surround ourselves with, make all the difference. Casey also spoke about the future of our industry, building science, and how to have a positive outlook on life and in business. We also discussed the difference between net-zero homes and passive homes. Additionally, focus on your mistakes and use those to catapult your career. Casey is the founder of the award-winning sustainable building company, The Conscious Builder, the host of The Conscious Builder Podcast and The Conscious Builder Show on YouTube and the former Co-host of The Conscious Living Podcast. He has written almost 400 blog posts on topics such as marketing, branding, entrepreneurship, personal development, sustainability and more. Casey brings almost two decades of experience to the construction industry and over a decade of experience to running, owning and growing multiple businesses while also staying committed to his wife and son. Casey is on a mission to help people build homes, businesses and lives in a more conscious manner and is co-authoring a book with Kevin Harrington, the original shark from the hit TV show Shark Tank.
“Conscious” Construction Builds Better Homes: A Conversation With Casey Grey of the Conscious Builder Casey Grey argues that you may not be able to build or renovate a home 100% sustainably, but that you can do it 100% consciously. Through his company, The Conscious Builder, Grey advocates making “conscious” construction decisions to create a positive, lasting change. He and his team focus on building and renovating homes that are cheaper to operate, better for the environment, more comfortable, and healthier for the families who live in them. And Grey practices what he preaches. His own home is net zero, producing at least as much energy as it consumes, and is built to the energy efficiency standards of the Passive House Institute—although, as he explained to the Bard MBA's Sven Thiessen, it also features a big rain showerhead in the master bathroom. Thiessen spoke with Grey for The Impact Report about the costs of sustainable versus traditional construction, how he's grown the company, and what he sees as the future of the industry.
