Broadcast from KSQD, Santa Cruz on 12-19-2024: Dr. Dawn examines a groundbreaking lawsuit against major food companies which alleges that these corporations deliberately design and market addictive ultra-processed foods to minors, leading to health conditions like type 2 diabetes. She discusses new FDA standards for "healthy" food labels, most breakfast cereals and snacks will no longer qualify while nuts, seeds, and whole foods gain approval. A caller initiates an in-depth conversation about addiction treatment approaches, comparing Portugal's successful drug policy reforms with current U.S. practices. Dr. Dawn explains omega-3 index and omega-6 fatty acid ratios in context of research implicating excess Omega 6 in colon cancer. There is an alarming rise in colorectal cancer among younger adults. Do processed foods play a role? A caller asks about lung function and morning phlegm production, and concerns about microplastics in the air and their health impacts. The show concludes with a scientific exploration of hangovers, including their causes, symptoms, and evidence-based treatments.

Crunchy moms who have spent years telling their child's pediatrician they want to limit the vaccines their child receives may soon have an advocate in Washington, D.C.    Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who President-elect Donald Trump has tapped to head the Department of Health and Human Services, is spending the week before Christmas meeting with Senators on Capitol Hill ahead of his expected confirmation hearing early next year.    Kennedy has branded himself as the leader of the “Make America Healthy Again” campaign, or MAHA, raising concerns over the obesity in this country, the processed food in American grocery stores, and the vaccines given to children.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that in 2000, one in every 150 children had been identified with autism spectrum disorder. By 2020, this number had risen to one in every 36 children. Kennedy has voiced support for studies to examine if the rise in autism is linked to the increasing number of vaccines given to babies and children.    “I'm not anti-vaccine, I just want good science,” Kennedy said in April during an appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” adding, “I am against vaccine mandates.”    Trump says he expects Kennedy to present him with reports on vaccines, but has assured the American people that they will still have access to vaccines.    “You're not going to lose the polio vaccine,” Trump told reporters during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Monday.  Kennedy's “MAHA” movement comes at a time when many Americans are embracing health trends. The U.S. wellness economy is valued at $1.8 trillion, according to Global Wellness Institute. From ditching seed oils to taking a cold plunge, many Americans increasingly appear interested in living healthier lives.    On this week's edition of “Problematic Women,” we discuss the popular health trends of 2024, how Kennedy could change the nation's approach to health and wellness, and ways to avoid some of those Christmas goodies.    Plus, God's Goop founder Justyn McAndrews joins the show to discuss the surprising health benefits of beef tallow - the perfect gift for your crunchy friend or family member this Christmas. Haven't we all been there? Trapped in the holiday chaos, stretching ourselves too thin to cater to everyone else's needs, but ours?  This episode peels back the layers on a game-changing strategy for the holidays - the idea of bare minimums. These are small, easy changes that can keep us sane and healthy amidst the festive frenzy.  I debunk the myth that the holiday season is just another time of the year and expose the invisible workload that often accompanies this special period. I aim to ensure you don't vanish into the to-do list.  I then dig deeper into the bare minimum concept during the holiday season. These are non-negotiable habits that serve as your health safety net while keeping you grounded amid the holiday whirlwind. I lay out practical tips to establish and maintain these personal habits, no matter how wild things get.  I wrap up the episode and shed light on the importance of integrating these bare minimums into your holiday routine. I share insights on how to ensure these habits stick and how to leverage personal motivations to stay on track. I also serve up tips on how to make the holidays slightly easier and get the most out of your downtime.  Trust me, prioritizing your health and well-being during the festive season is crucial, and finding the right balance amidst the holiday bustle is possible. As we move into the holiday season, and the end of our 3rd year of My Wife the Dietitian, we thought we'd celebrate by revisiting some past episodes. We've chosen some that suit the holiday season, as well as some of your favourites. We want to thank you all for listening to our weekly banter, and we look forward to sharing more with you in the coming year. Wishing you all the best in health and happiness over the holidays. Enjoy this episode from Dec 2022. The holidays and Christmas time can be a wonderful time with holiday cheer and taking stock of your blessings. For many though, it can be the most stressful time of the year. Research shows that cardiac death rates are highest around Christmas and New Year's - the two weeks throughout the holidays (between Christmas and New Year's Eve) more people die of natural causes than what is normal for winter months. (Naveed Saleh, MD). It's an easy time to overindulge, but you don't have to steer your diet and health habits off course. It IS possible to survive the holiday season without expanding your waist line, getting that holiday bulge or dealing with overwhelm and stress. Lifestyle Strategies for self care: 1) Sleep - listen to episode 16 for more information 2) Work Duties/projects - lighten your load. Decrease screentime (checking emails, social media, etc - only one specific time period in a day). Listen to fun podcasts instead ;-) Try alternative activities - singing (good for breathing), laughing (watch comedies, see friends/family for fun), kissing under the mistletoe etc 3) Exercise - take regular breaks for walking, skating/skiing, or perhaps luging 4) Meditation - time out/mindful practices/breathe deeply/visualize 5) Diet - be mindful of pitfalls with overindulging. - think of office culture - lots of sweets, baked goods, donuts etc around for snacking on throughout the day; plan ahead and make wise choices Restaurant meals: - don't skip meals that day to 'save up' for buffet or restaurant meal - eat a regular breakfast and have something with protein for lunch to help keep blood sugars stable throughout day, even though you are eating out. Keep your rhythm with regular meals, so, you are less likely to overdo it and overeat and feel awful. Strategies while ordering: - order grill vs fried/breaded/deep fried - sides - salad/vegetables vs fries/potato - tomato-based pasta vs cream-based pasta sauces - broth or tomato-base soups vs cream based soups and chowders - baked potato - order salsa instead of butter or sour cream or cheese/bacon Traveling by vehicle: Pack a cooler - fruit/vegetables/trail mix/wraps, yogurt drinks, etc. Balancing work and family with selfcare and personal wellbeing will help with rest and recuperation.
