Listeners of Spark+Victory Podcast that love the show mention:Full title: Creativity is messy and we like it that way. Saying yes and figuring out the rest, with photographer Christopher Zebo. In Episode 114, my guest is Chris Zebo, an incredibly talented, award-winning photographer and multi-passionate creative. I met Chris through my own fun creative endeavor, and could immediately tell that in addition to his travel and landscape photography which I love, he also has a keen business sense and a lot of great ideas! I was thrilled to book him for this show. In our conversation, we discuss: Chris's penchant for saying YES to new opportunities in his career, and the messiness that follows as he puts his money or, rather, his camera lens, where his mouth is. WHY that method works well for him (hint: because he is good at listening to his inner voice and letting the rest go.) Chris now runs two successful photography businesses, and we dive in to his personal philosophy on creating a stellar client experience, and how interior design plays a big role in that. We also chat about how he balances his "millions" of projects to stay inspired and fulfilled. One thing I learned about Chris in this conversation is that he as good at painting a picture with words as he is with a camera. I think you'll enjoy this conversation. In Episode 114, we are talking all things pricing. If you have ever flip-flopped on your pricing, feeling frustrated trying to figure out how to price your products or services; If you want to raise your prices but aren't sure if you should right now; Or if you have raised your prices in the past and gotten some kind of backlash - This episode is for you! In our conversation, we discuss: Three ways to distinguish your value, and what not to look at when deciding what your product or service is actually worth! Why you need to focus on two of these three things to really establish yourself in your marketplace. When and how to decide to raise your pricing, and the mistakes that entrepreneurs often make when it comes to either setting or raising your prices. If you want to earn more money, or think that you might be undercharging right now and really need some clear guidance, Kim explains this so well! In Episode 113, I am delighted to share my conversation with Jo Pham. She is the Founder and CEO of The Social Party, a full-service social media agency for business owners. Jo has been a client of mine, so I have gotten to know her and her business very well. As you know from listening to this show, mindset plays a huge role in our happiness and success. How we think determines how we feel, and the decisions we make or don't make. Our brain is our most valuable asset! If we feed and cultivate it, we will get incredible results in return. I wanted to have Jo on the show because I have honestly been amazed by what she has done with her business in a relatively short amount of time. And, from our work together, I have witnessed her mindset at play and seen why she has been able to move so quickly and powerfully forward. It's not because she worked harder, longer, or has something special that other entrepreneurs don't have!
In Episode 113, I have a great conversation with Katherine Johnson. She is the founder of True Self, an image consultancy that focuses on helping women look and feel like the leaders they are. Simply stated, they help you hone your personal style - from your wardrobe to your self-concept - so that you are presenting yourself to the world the way that you want to be seen. They focus on leadership because often, in leadership positions, women feel like they "have to be a certain way" (I'm paraphrasing, but you get the point) instead of fully being in alignment with who they are. This can be challenging, from corporate culture all the way to being a creative entrepreneur, and the expectations that people have about creatives. We talk about this in the episode, and Katherine shares a great example of an interior designer client who felt really boxed in before doing this work! Katherine explains 3 ways that women often "hide in plain sight" and why your personal style has nothing to do with vanity and is totally worth cultivating. We also talk about how she grew up as a competitive athlete, and how that actually conditioned her to believe she needed to struggle in order to succeed. She has since decided that is not the case, and tries to work with the motto "let it be easy." In Episode 111, my guest is Cate Black, an architectural photographer whose work is frequently featured in top-tier design magazines. She's also one of those people who's just naturally good at marketing. Her Instagram @cateblackofficial is beautiful and fun, with a great mix of gorgeous homes, photo styling and decorating tips, and plant-based food. Cate is a solopreneur, and we talk about how she came to the decision to operate solo and what she does to stay energized and organized while also making sure the business is growing year over year. In our conversation, she reveals two big changes that she recently made to her business and the impact of these changes on her happiness and work-life balance. Stay tuned to the end of our chat for what, I think, is a really inspiring example of what happens when you "go for it" and ask successful people to help you grow. In Episode 110, I have a great conversation with Holly Shaw. She is an author, performance coach hypnotherapist, and stand-up comedian. Yes, all of those things! As you'll hear her say, she goes up on stage three to six times a week for her own comedy career in addition to running her businesses and seeing her clients. She is clearly a multi-passionate, creative entrepreneur. We talk about each facet and how they are woven together to create a fulfilling career. I ask her about balance and how she makes time for everything she needs to be healthy, happy and creative. She also happens to be a solopreneur, which I love because she is proof positive that fancy tools and teams are not required! I am a fan of creating a ritual or practice to celebrate the end of a year and set the tone for a new year to come. In fact, the ritual I am sharing with you today is one that my husband and I have been practicing for 11 years! It's a combination of reflection and intention setting, but that's honestly too basic of a description for what it really does for me! That's why I want to share it with you! I created a workbook to guide you through my annual Reflect, Refresh and Revitalize ritual. Inside, you'll find powerful questions to review your year, release unnecessary blocks, call in prosperity, and set the intention for your new year to come. In this episode I am giving you a peek into what's inside this guide (you can access this guide for free inside the Maverick HQ) along with some of my own answers to this year's practice. I hope you enjoy this episode, download the guide and give it a whirl. It may just change the trajectory of your year! (I'm not even kidding). “You are closer than you realize to being the person you want to be.” - Linsi Brownson What is something that you want in your life, but struggle to stick with? We often worry about the ways that we're falling short, which is especially painful when we deeply desire something and believe that we are standing in our own way. In this episode, I am reflecting on the statement “I wish I was a person who…” that I hear often from the creative entrepreneurs I work with. The idea behind this is to change their behavior in order to become the person they want to be. Changing habits is an important part of personal growth, but in order to make sustainable, supportive changes with our actions, we must start by understanding our thoughts and desires. I have a few questions to help you get started. Let's dive in. If you enjoy the Be Brilliant In Your Business Podcast, please subscribe and review us on iTunes, Spotify or Audible! “In the desire to do the right thing, we often do nothing.” - Linsi Brownson Hey Maverick, today we are diving into one of my favorite topics to coach on - perfectionism! Many creative entrepreneurs struggle with perfectionist tendencies, in part because they don't realize they have them. Even people who consider themselves “perfectionists” (ahem, that's a label I don't agree with) often miss the subtleties that cause the most havoc in their lives. Because perfectionism isn't about having high standards or wanting things to be perfect. In fact, most of the people who I talk with about this aren't aiming for perfection. But what they are aiming for, and what trips them up the most, is finding what is “right.” The right marketing strategy. The right way to say no to something they don't want to do. The right time to start. The right price to charge. Even the right podcast episode to get inspired for the day! Whether it's a big or small decision, when you think the words “right” or “best”, you can be sure that perfectionism is in play. In this episode, we will identify habits that you may not realize are the results of perfectionism and get you in the mindset to address them head-on and free yourself from these limitations. “There is always someone else who can do it.” - Linsi Brownson As entrepreneurs, we are no strangers to overwhelm and exhaustion. When things start piling up, our never-ending to-do list starts taking away from the joy that had originally sparked our entrepreneurial spirit. To fix this and get our fire burning again, we must accept that we can't do everything, but letting go as a business owner can be a daunting task to say the least. In this week's podcast I'm talking about how you can let go of the tasks that are no longer serving you so you can focus on what is important and inspiring you. By doing this, you can renew your passion, increase your business's capacity, and focus your energy forward rather than staying stagnant. “Darling, you had the power all along”. - Holly G In this episode I am joined by the leading lady at Holly G Studios, Holly Gillen. She helps entrepreneurs create business cinema that provides value to her clients' customers and drives sales. With the increase in popularity of video platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, it is hard to avoid getting in front of the camera as part of your marketing approach. But does that mean we all have to start learning viral TikTok dances? Thankfully no! What I love about Holly's approach is that she focuses on using video content to create true value for viewers and not worrying about keeping up with the latest trends just for the sake of ‘the algorithm'. As someone who started her career behind the camera, she is no stranger to the discomfort of being on the other side of the lens. Good thing she tamed her butterflies and is filled with tips and techniques on how to embrace the nerves and let the true you shine. Today I am joined by Melissa Kiguwa, CEO and founder of Obanj Jewelry. Obanj is a luxury sustainable startup where members can borrow high-end designer jewelry like Chanel, YSL, Dior, Hermes, and more for a small monthly fee (current packages start at $29 a month). They are on a mission to democratize luxury and help people look and feel like a million bucks without having to spend it. Rental fashion like Obanj makes it fun to play because the risk is low and you may just discover something new about your style in the process. PLUS, exposing yourself to luxury items expands your thinking by giving you a real-life visual of your rich self. This is a power move in my book. In this episode, Melissa and I talk about sustainable consumption, the trials of starting a product-based business during a pandemic, how to identify gaps in the market as an entrepreneur, and a clever win-win way to gain investors or become an investor no matter what your current financial situation is. Content Creators Rejoice! Here's how to make your content go the extra mile for you. My guest is Abby Herman, CEO and Founder of The Content Experiment and host of The Content Experiment Podcast. Abby helps small business owners develop and implement content strategies that work for them. Abby is a kindred spirit, in that she doesn't believe that business owners should have to spend every waking hour creating content in order to make a living. Her motto, like mine, is more strategy, less busywork. The work you do up-front to gain clarity, get organized, and put some systems in place will pay off big when it comes to both your time and energy and your results using content. In Episode 94, I made a pretty bold recommendation to take a Summer break from creating new content. Since Abby's an expert, and I really wanted to know what she thought about that, and if she had any recommendations for how to do it strategically. Spoiler... she does! Most of us are pretty familiar with setting goals. We do it informally all the time, and formally sometimes. And we all achieve some of our goals. But I’ve found with a lot of entrepreneurs, that there is a bit of a disconnect between the starting point of setting a goal and the finish line. There’s a whole process that we go through that we rarely pay much attention to. And that is where the entirety of our success and our struggle takes place. I want to bring your attention to the actual process. To understanding and intentionally following the process so that you have more control, less frustration, and can move through it faster and easier. Episode Highlights: The first reason to hire a coach: Learning vs. Applying. When you listen to things you learn them. When you apply them, you grow. It doesn’t matter how much great information we get or how many ah-ha moments we have if we don’t apply the things we learn in our lives. The vast majority of the content we consume we don’t do anything with. Check out the Maverick HQ to get tools to work on your business or yourself. The most effective way to learn and apply tools is by working with the coach that created them. When you work with a coach the two of you come together to determine this process of which tools and resources are going to be the most relevant and useful for you right now specific for what you need. The second reason to hire a coach: You will accelerate your results with a coach. When you have some available that can help you bypass an obstacle your results can be accelerated. Start with what you do have and then fill in the gaps instead of trying to find all the answers you need. When you are keeping the path clean and quieting the noise you can go so much faster. The third reason to hire a coach: You have breakthrough creativity. What is most important in a coaching relationship is that the coach is helping you build the skills and empower you to continue creating more on your own. The fourth reason to hire a coach: Micro Adjustments. Being able to bring to light the little tiny things that are impacting our business. The tiny habits and beliefs are what we really have to work on. The fifth reason to hire a coach: It feels great! The simple act of being seen and heard for who you really are with no judgment is one of the most fundamental human needs. We just don’t have people in our lives like a coach who is going to listen and help us work through our ideas but has no agenda for us. We get to decide our own agenda. Coaching is about what you want to be creating and working through the process of actually creating and implementing that. If these reasons or any of your own reasons have you in the place that you are ready and want to work with a coach, I would love to work with you. Check out the coaching options here. Episode Highlights: Come join me for free in the Maverick HQ and you can ask me any questions you want to know. How do I know if I am doing busy work or actually moving my business forward? This is a big challenge I see come up for my clients in two ways. The first way is making time for new things that we don’t already have the time for but we want to create the time for. It also comes up when people have been doing something for a while, but it doesn’t seem to be working. We carry this fear around wasting our time. You want to make sure you are using your time and energy for things that really do matter to you. We should waste our time on purpose. We can focus on getting meaningful work done while I am working and then have that time to do whatever I want with it. This fear of doing busy work or working harder than you need to is something that squashes so many business owners before they even get started or it causes them to burn out and then they quit. Tip #1: Know what done means. Anything that is important for your growth or happiness in your business or your life is going to have a measurable outcome. If you can’t come up with a tangible result then it is probably busywork. Taking a course and learning are passive actions. They aren’t producing a result or moving your business forward. It doesn’t produce a result until you implement it. You need a definitive goal for yourself for taking the course. Tip #2: Make sure that each action is a puzzle piece that fits in the bigger picture. Think about all the things you do as pieces of a bigger puzzle. Make sure the pieces (tasks) that you’re picking up are the right pieces to fit into that bigger picture. Tip #3: Remembering that a yes to this is a no to something else. Anytime we say yes to something we are saying no to everything except that thing. This is true minute by minute, day by day, and year by year. Think about what task trips you up the most. Is it really worth it or is it busy work? Get full show notes and transcript at: www.linsibrownson.com/podcast/87 Episode Highlights: Most of the time personal growth happens gradually. It is a very organic growth process. Focus on your intrinsic motivators. Get centered and find your motivation within yourself. These creative ways are all about going inward and sparking your own inspiration. The first way to motivate yourself is to put on your creative hat literally. Having objects that we give meaning for specific activities signals our brain that it is time for that activity to occur. Tip #2: Pay yourself a compliment. Ideally, the compliment has something to do with the work you are stepping into. It puts you in the mindset to create more value by showing up today. If it feels disingenuous to give yourself a compliment at the moment, let your clients do it for you. Go to your website and look at the testimonials you have gotten or reflect back on recent conversations with your clients. Generating empowering thoughts will create an emotional vibration in your body that has positive energy behind it coming from a positive self-image. Tip #3: Gamifying your to-dos. Playing games stimulates your creative brain and it also makes work more fun. Set a 15-minute timer and make it a game. There is no losing in this game! Tip #4: Give yourself the “Honey I am home” speech. Ask your future self to share the best of today’s moments with you. Tip #5: Give yourself a moving pep talk. A talk that will get your blood pumping and fill you with this “I got this” energy. Moving your body can break up the stagnant energy. Make sure your mindset is focused on thinking the thoughts that you want to be thinking while your body is moving in a way that feels good. Overthinking, busyness, people-pleasing and undercharging are habits too! The good news is that we can break these patterns in the same way we'd break habits like overeating, shopping or drinking. Our behavior comes from our identity. Habits are actions that reinforce our identity. In order to change a habit permanently, we need shift our identity in relation to the behavior. When you try to change your behavior through willpower and force, it requires a lot of energy and repetition to change. As soon as you "take your eye off the ball" the behavior stops. If you focus on the identity shift first, the change in behavior feels natural instead of forced. You remove the resistance and can adopt the actions faster (sometimes instantaneously). I give examples of an email habit, yoga habit and drinking habit. Episode Links: Join the Maverick HQ for free business tools, coaching, and apply to be a podcast guest. This is the final episode of 2020. Most of us are looking forward to a new year and finally saying goodbye to 2020. I am really excited about this episode. Since it is the final episode of the year, we are going to be looking back a little bit. I am going to share 3 lessons from this year: a lesson that I learned, a lesson that I re-learned, and a lesson that I unlearned this year. The best part is that I will be sharing these lessons using the British Baking Show. In This Episode: [02:05] Linsi is going to share three lessons and use the British Baking Show as her example. There are all sorts of parallels with the bakers and entrepreneurs. [03:17] Space, downtown, cultivation, and purposeful action are really important elements to having fun. [04:58] Lesson One: playing big vs. playing small. Playing big isn’t about doing big things. It is the level at which you are following your heart. It is willing to go all-in for what you want. [06:03] There are several things that stop us from playing big. The risk that we are afraid of is not the situation, it is a feeling. We are afraid of the feeling of being humiliated, disappointed, or overwhelmed. [06:57] Playing big isn’t about taking this huge risk. It is about being willing to follow something that you are passionate about knowing that there is a possibility that you are going to experience risky emotions. [09:01] Playing big is showing up in your business time and time again and knowing that it is worth it because we are following something that we are passionate about. [10:31] Showing up every day is no small feat. It is a challenge for us to continually overcome the small challenges in our lives. Celebrate in your life where you are playing big! [12:19] Linsi shares about the British Baking Show and how it compares to entrepreneurship. [14:14] On the show once the bakers receive their challenge they take action so they don’t become overwhelmed which is the same with entrepreneurs. As soon as they are taking action, their confidence starts to rise. [15:48] As time goes on the bakers start to make reactive decisions at the moment because doubt creeps in. As entrepreneurs, we also make reactionary decisions when driven by doubt. [17:46] Playing big is about choosing your desires over your fears. [18:08] You can play a bigger game by practicing the thought, “I am willing to feel disappointed because it means I am trying something new.” The fear is only present because you are doing something that matters. [18:40] Lesson 2: Every level feels like starting over. [20:24] There is no such thing as backward. We only go forward. [21:44] Starting and running your own business is like adopting a puppy. It requires continuing care, affection, and attention for as long as it is alive. [24:06] Any time you feel yourself back at what feels like a starting point, it’s because you’ve entered a new level and it’s time to redefine the future of your business again. [25:47] When you have the feeling that you are starting over, just recognize that you are at a new level and it’s time to make forward decisions and keep moving forward. [26:01] Lesson 3: Stop overthinking! Overthinking gets in the way of our dreams time and time again. [27:12] As entrepreneurs we have to self impose our deadlines and we have to learn how to honor our own deadlines so that we can overcome our tendency to overthink. [27:43] The antidote to overthinking is action. The simplest thing that you can do if you catch yourself is to take one small but immediate action to disrupt the pattern. [29:56] The British Baking show is a good example of community over competition. This is such a great part about small businesses too. [31:18] Take a holiday break. Plan for it, give yourself the time and space you need to rejuvenate and restore your energy and get excited about all the great things you are going to do next week. As entrepreneurs, we are never really done. We are always moving to another level. Stop overthinking and keep moving forward. Welcome back for part two of the How to Sell Better series. Last week we kicked things off by talking about clarity and not having a clear enough offer. If you miss that episode definitely go and check that out. This week, we’re digging into the second reason: making your offer compelling. You don’t want to miss the three ways to create your own compelling offers. Adding these three pieces to your offer will create the urge to buy with your clients. In This Episode: [01:42] A lot of us put out offers that are not compelling at all and then we do all this work and we wonder why people aren’t buying from us. We know it is valuable. The truth is they don’t see the value! [02:17] If people aren’t buying from you, they need to be told exactly why they should. It is probably happening because you are still in your head thinking about it and you should be in their head thinking about it. [02:41] What is compelling to your audience is going to be a little different than what is compelling for everyone else’s audiences but there are some key components. [03:03] Think about what you buy and what you are compelled to buy. Also, think about your specific client and customer. If you were them how would you be compelled to buy. [03:31] The first thing that makes a compelling offer is when you give exponential returns or you give someone a greater than exchange. [03:58] The perceived value of your offer to them needs to be greater than the perceived cost. If they perceive it as an even exchange then they are going to be a lot less motivated to take action. [06:38] A compelling offer gives our clients the motivation to take action. Many business owners are working so hard to sell something that is valuable but it is perceived by their people as a basic exchange. [07:25] Your client isn’t thinking about all your hard work. They are thinking about their time, their money, and the results they want. Your clients are amazing people but they don’t care about you, they care about them. [08:02] People hire us to help them manage their time, manage their money, and get the results that they want. It is all about your client. [08:11] Can you deliver something that is worth exponentially more than what they are going to pay for it? That is an exponential return and that makes you offer a lot more compelling. [09:05] The things we buy either bring us pleasure, relief, or both. The more convenient it is for us to buy the faster we can get that pleasure or relief the more motivated we are to take the action. [11:41] Think about what ways you can give your potential customers instant gratification. Make the buying experience feel very pleasurable and give an instant sense of relief. [12:10] Another component of a compelling offer is having a hook. A hook is something about your offer that makes it unique and better than other options. One way that people often do this is by creating scarcity. [14:07] Another hook is creating a package service or creating a product out of your services. This is one of the quickest ways for service companies to boost their conversions by creating products with the services they offer. [15:44] Take a look at what you are selling and see if it is unique, gratifying, and provides exponential value to your clients. [15:58] In order for your clients to buy from you or book with you, they need to feel an urge in their body to take that action. That thought that will generate that urge is “I need this.” Your job is to figure out in your offer what is going to trigger that thought for them. [16:28] The better you understand your client and the more you can think like them, the easier it becomes to create clear and compelling offers for them. [16:51] Creating amazing offers for your specific clients takes some trial and error. Remember that business itself is an ongoing experience. Take a look at what you are selling and see if it is unique, gratifying, and provides exponential value to your clients. The more you can get out of your head and into your client’s head the clearer and more compelling your offers will become. Today I am kicking off a two-part series. This week and next week we are going to talk about selling, how to sell better, and more specifically why people are not buying from you now. These are very important things to get in mind and help you to be better at selling. Because the better we become at selling, the easier it is to make money. And there are two reasons that your offer isn’t selling right now. What you’re selling isn’t crystal clear. It’s not compelling them to take action now. This week, we’re digging into the first reason: clarity. Make sure to join us next week for part two when we talk about creating compelling offers. In This Episode: [01:06] We are going to talk about selling, how to sell better, and more specifically why people are not buying from you now. [01:46] There are two reasons that people are not buying from you now. [02:02] Every problem and opportunity in your business always comes down to your thoughts! Except for when you are designing your offer. [02:48] When creating an offer it is not about you. It is always about your client’s thoughts. You really want to get into the mind of your client. [03:04] The two reasons your clients are not buying from you now are you offer is not clear enough and/or it is not compelling to them. Today we are going to talk about the first reason, the clarity of your offer. [03:33] To clarify: Your offer is the thing that you’re selling to the client. [04:36] You want your client to have the thought, “I need this!” That is the only thought that will result in them scheduling a call with you, or buying what you are selling. [05:19] We make decisions in a split second. Our brains are primed to say no to anything that is new. An unclear offer is an automatic no. [06:41] One way you might be making your offer less than clear is with the language you are using. [08:01] Direct and specific language is always better in your offers. You won’t sound aggressive, I promise. [11:52] Don’t overcomplicate your offer. What is your client’s problem? What’s the simplest way you could help them solve it? [13:08] Every moment that your client is waiting because they “aren’t sure” if this is for them, they are losing time and missing the opportunity of having what they really want. [13:45] Most business owners start with the most complex offer. They add all the bells and whistles to make it sound more valuable. Do the opposite. Start with the simplest solution, then consider if they need extra stuff. [13:59] Finally, you need to actually make offers. A lot of people assume they are selling when they’re not. They expect people to know how to buy from them just because they show up on social media every day, or just because they went to a networking event. But none of that is selling. The way to make clear offers is to think the way your client thinks. The more you can get out of your head and into your client’s head the clearer your offers will become. On today’s episode, I am going to take you through my process to self-audit your business. I like to do an overall audit or a year in review every year around this time. Auditing is also something that you want to do regularly to check-in and see where your business is and what has and hasn’t been working. I am going to talk about the three parts of a self-audit. Once you learn the system, you can implement it over and over again. I also share how often you should consider implementing a self-audit to help you gain understanding and help you create intentions for how you want to move forward. In This Episode: [01:04] Linsi’s process to self-audit your business. [01:19] Auditing is something that you want to do regularly, to check-in and see what has and hasn’t been working in your business. It can be done quarterly or at the end of each major project. And, of course, an end-of-year audit is a business best-practice, [01:42] Make sure to listen to the very end for a special offer. [02:01] In an audit, you are looking at three things. What worked, what didn’t work, and what you want to improve next time. [02:45] Starting with what worked gives us a bigger perspective on what we don’t have to worry about, what is going well, and it is important to recognize our accomplishments. [03:34] Start with looking at what has been working over the last few months or a defined period of time that seems relevant and then work your way back to other milestones and dates. [04:19] Then take a deeper look by looking at what did work by categories like branding, packages, services, marketing, projects, sales, etc. [05:10] Once you have this picture of what is working then it is time to move onto what didn’t work. [05:28] The whole purpose of an audit is to have an objective view on both sides. When you are going through what didn’t work, state it factually and ask yourself why. [06:12] We always want someone else to tell us what their opinion is and what they see, but the truth of the matter is that we always have a pretty good idea if we are willing to ask and listen to what the answer actually is. [06:30] Learning to audit ourselves is very challenging because we’re not very objective about where we succeed and fall short. If you can stay as neutral as possible you will get so much insight. [07:13] Step three of the audit is to decide what you want to improve. Focus on three things that you would like to improve moving forward. [07:47] After the audit, you can create supercharged strategies. Decide how you are going to implement the three things you chose to focus on. [08:19] Linsi shares an example from her own audit. [09:17] She was doing a lot of writing during a tough time and had a personal breakthrough. She decided that she wasn’t going to do anything in her life and business that didn’t ultimately feel fun to her. [10:41] She shares the waves she noticed in her own audit. [13:17] After you choose your supercharged strategies then you can look at setting goals. Linsi recommends setting 90-day goals. Then decide what action steps you need to do to achieve those goals. [13:56] A self-audit is a good information gathering tool that will help you set yourself up for success. [14:13] Introducing the 2021 Game Plan! On today’s episode, I am joined by a special guest, Jacq Fisch. I interviewed Jacq over a year ago on the podcast and we are re-airing that conversation today. Jacq is a professional copywriter and helps business owners become better writers and make the writing process a whole lot easier. She has an online membership called Write Like a MOFO. She also has her own book, Unfussy Life, coming out in early 2021, all about her life of fast pivots and learning to really trust herself. When I originally had her on the show we talked about taking mental breaks; Finding ways to create space in our lives, not only for our health and happiness but also as an essential part of creativity. She shares her tips to get out of your head. I decided to re-air this episode because this topic has been on my mind a lot since I have dealt with a lot of headiness lately. I need to get out of my own head. So here we go. In This Episode: [03:16] One of the ways Linsi works through her mental stuff is by getting her thoughts on paper. This brain dump is a regular practice for her. [05:07] She recommends starting by downloading all your thoughts on paper and really understanding what is going on inside your head if you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed. Then you have the ability to process your emotions and allow them and you can take some space and start to let things go. [07:06] The scattered and looping thoughts are two indicators for her that what she needs is to intentionally step back, slow things down, get out of her head, and do less. This is so hard to do. [07:32] She decided to re-air her conversation with Jacq because she knows she is not alone in mental overload right now. [09:31] Unfussy writing is simple, easy to understand language, and that our clients and people understand. Unfussy is an approach to writing and business that feels easy, fun, and light. [10:46] The number one thing if you want to sound clearer in your writing is to write like you speak, then edit out unneeded words. [11:56] Unfussy writing is simply getting words down on a page which can be a struggle for many people. The editing is where the magic happens. [14:59] The first thing that Jacq does with all her clients is non-negotiable customer avatar work. [17:18] The clearer you are on who you want to work with the clearer you can be in your writing. [18:42] Even if you’re not sure who your people are exactly, guess and you can go back and change it later if you need to. [19:31] Jacq shares about her Write Like a MOFO Community. [22:41] You can join the MOFO Community by applying on her website or being invited by a current member. [25:01] Many members are able to get their writing for the week completed in the weekly MOFO sessions and don’t have to do any writing outside of the sessions. [27:37] If you are starting on your website from nothing she suggests starting with your sales or work with me page. Most of that page should be focused on what your client wants and their struggles. [28:07] Jacq suggests working on your about page next because we buy from people and we want to know, like, and trust them before we buy. She recommends doing the home page last. [30:14] The job of your home page is to let whoever is landing on your website know that is the right place for them, what they will find there, and who you are. [31:48] The best way for her to rediscover her MOJO is to do nothing without a purpose. [33:26] Jacq likes to start the day on the right foot and then take breaks throughout the day. The key is really doing nothing to give her brain a break. [36:29] She discovered early in her business that doing forty hours of deep creative work wasn’t going to work for her. Our brains can only handle between 4-6 hours of deep work a day and then we are no longer effective. [40:14] Jacq’s go-to brain breaks are painting, listening to audiobooks, and watching sports. [43:11] Moving our bodies is an important part of a brain break as well. [44:06] If it isn’t fun or doesn’t feel good then it is time for a break or to reevaluate the work you are doing. On today’s episode, I am talking about the turnaround, an easy way to get some perspective on whatever is bugging you. This is taken from The Work of Bryon Katie. She does four questions and a turnaround. So today what we are talking about is the turnaround. It is kind of like playing opposite day with your thoughts. The purpose of the turnaround is to get perspective and sometimes that perspective is so powerful it just instantly releases all of the weight of whatever you have been carrying around. In This Episode: [01:19] So today what we are talking about is the turnaround. It is kind of like playing opposite day with your thoughts. [01:37] ANNOUNCEMENT: I am launching an ask me anything for you (my podcast listeners). Submit your question here. [02:38] The purpose of the turnaround is to get perspective and sometimes that perspective is so powerful it just instantly releases all of the weight of whatever you have been carrying around. [03:08] it can help you recognize that your thoughts are optional. [03:50] Some turnarounds will be very obvious for you but some will actually be pretty challenging to figure out the opposite thought that can give you the most power. [04:32] Start by doing a brain dump on paper of something that is bugging you right now. [05:07] The difference between a brain dump and a journal entry is that you want to give every thought that you have its own line like a list. Keep asking why. Give your brain a chance to get it all out. [05:15] If there isn’t something specific that’s bothering you but you are just feeling generally anxious or frustrated. Then you want to start by asking yourself how you are feeling right now. Then you will list each emotion that comes up. Then you ask why you are feeling that way. [07:42] Next you will grab another piece of paper and you are going to rewrite your same thought as a turnaround. [08:51] Linsi shares turnaround examples when frustrated with other people. [09:25] When you are doing the turnaround thought you want to look at what is really painful behind the thought itself. It is more about restating to yourself in a way that feels empowering instead of painful. [11:31] The turnaround puts you back in the driver’s seat, it gives you ownership over what’s going on, and it helps you actually see that everything you are thinking about someone or something else is ultimately something you are thinking about yourself. [11:54] When Linsi starts to recognize that she is having judgments about herself and others she decides ultimately that her main goal is to drop the judgment. [12:24] The turnaround is such a powerful tool to help us get back to the place where we are really being the brilliant business owner and person we can be and want to be. Questions to Ask: What’s bothering me right now? Who is bothering me right now? Why is that bothering me? What are they doing that is bothering me? What do I wish was different? On today’s episode, I am talking about something I like to call Fuzzy Blanket Syndrome. No, this isn’t actually a real syndrome, but I think it paints a really great visual in our minds to help us create more awareness for ourselves and how we are showing up in our businesses. Most small business owners want to love their business. They want to do work that they are passionate about. Fuzzy Blanket Syndrome is when you want your business to make you feel all warm and snuggly inside. Do you suffer from fuzzy blanket syndrome? In this episode, I talk about how to get past fuzzy blanket syndrome and love your business. In This Episode: [01:10] We are talking about something I like to call Fuzzy Blanket Syndrome. [01:34] ANNOUNCEMENT: I am launching an ask me anything for you (my podcast listeners). Submit your question here. [02:41] Most small business owners want to love their business. They want to do work that they are passionate about. [03:52] The small business owner lifestyle doesn’t have a manual, role, salary, vacation days, retirement fund, and a work schedule. Every day is up for grabs and every day you get instant feedback on your performance. [04:18] When we notice we are not enjoying our business or overworking or we aren’t getting the results we want, we then have the flexibility to change it and to see different results very quickly. [05:41] The more we start and stop things the harder it is to get momentum and the longer it takes. [06:01] Having a business that we love is what we really want, right? [06:13] Fuzzy Blanket Syndrome is when you want your business to make you feel all warm and snuggly inside. You want your business to give you security and be super easy to take care of. [07:25] Your business isn’t a fuzzy blanket and it isn’t supposed to be. Your business only has one job to be a vehicle for you to make and sell things. Having a business has lots of perks. [09:07] So many people want to love their business but their business just can’t do anything right. You won’t find a business that can do anything right. You need to love your business unconditionally and you need to do the work yourself with security, satisfaction, and happiness. [09:40] Your relationship with your business is your thoughts about your business. [10:33] If you believe that your business is the problem and that it is supposed to be this warm snuggly fuzzy blanket then you will only want to show up to do the stuff that feels good at least in the long term. [11:19] If you want to love your business for the long haul, you want to start looking at the thoughts you’re having about your business. [11:27] Ask yourself what you wish is different about your business. Write down your thoughts. Ask yourself how you would feel and what would you be thinking about your business if all of those things were exactly the way you want them. [12:17] It is very important to write them down because now you have a very clear picture of the relationship problems you have with your business. [12:33] It is time to take ownership of those thoughts. Now you can choose to believe those thoughts or decide to love your business no matter what. [12:54] Even challenge those thoughts and see if they are really true. [13:19] The more you give to your business and your relationship with your business the more you will get back but it is not coming from your business. It will always be coming from your thoughts. On today’s episode, I am talking about post-decision doubt. This has been coming up recently with some of my clients and I think this is such a great topic. We talk a lot about powerful decisions a lot on the show. I talk about how to make them and how to follow through with them. When you make a powerful decision it doesn’t mean all your doubt, mind chatter, and what-ifs disappear. This seems to be what we think should happen and it can really throw us for a loop. Post-decision doubt is part of the process. Doubt is going to show up before you make decisions and it is going to show up after you make them. I share some practical steps you can take to put doubt in the passenger seat where it belongs. In This Episode: [01:18] I talk a lot about powerful decisions. I talk about how to make them and how to follow through with them, but when you make a powerful decision it doesn’t mean all your doubts, mind chatter, and what-ifs disappear. [01:45] Business owners will make these powerful decisions and be all in and they move forward and the doubt shows up again so they think they made the wrong decision. [02:26] Post-decision doubt is part of the process. [03:15] Doubt is going to show up before you make decisions and it is going to show up after you make them. It is your job to understand the place it has and not spend your energy entertaining and worry about it. [04:27] Becoming a person who always follows through on their decisions is a skill that will create so much freedom in your life. [05:16] When you think that something isn’t working you have to get coached or coach yourself on what is really happening and your thoughts about it. Make a plan ahead of time of how long you will commit to your decision and what information you will use to evaluate it. [06:59] Most people are not early adopters of new things. [07:43] We give our time and energy to what we think is the most important thing right now. We are very now focused. [08:37] When we make the decision to commit ahead of time it was easier to coach through the obstacles, recommit, and go back to focus so you can execute the next steps. [09:07] Make a plan for how long you are committed to your decision, decide what criteria you are going to use to evaluate it, and at what point you are going to look at everything and decide to keep going or change something about the decisions. [09:39] The more practice you get at making powerful decisions the less intensely you will experience that post-decision doubt. [09:57] Doubt is just part of the process. It is not a problem, it gets to come along on the ride, you are in charge, and your decision is the driver. On today’s episode, I am talking about overworking and underworking. I am going to talk about why we do it and how to stop it. Many business owners come to me very tired, overworked, and maybe even burnt out from chasing their to-dos day after day. We are going to talk about this from the root cause because if you are overworking or underworking it is a result of overthinking. In this episode, I talk about the steps you need to take to get the results you want. In This Episode: [00:49] My business is helping busy business owners get more done by hustling less. [01:27] If you are exhausted by your business or life in general and you’re not getting the results you want you are probably underworking. If you are getting the results you want and are exhausted that is a sign you are overworking. [01:57] We are going to talk about this from the root cause because if you are overworking or underworking it is a result of overthinking which is basically not thinking objectively or strategically about what it takes to produce the outcomes you want. [03:38] Overworking is spending more energy than the value of the outcome you are producing. [04:39] Overachievers and perfectionist love overworking. [05:21] If you keep overworking you create energy debt and this leads to burnout. [07:21] As perfectionists, we often produce this piece of work that is very well thought and well researched, but we overthink it so much that we exhaust ourselves and end up giving less value. [08:54] Overworking, overachieving, and perfectionism all come from overthinking and the result that you produce is either going to be the result that you want plus negative consequences or it is actually diminishing the value based on how much effort you are putting in. [09:16] Underworking is when you don’t have the results because you haven’t met the requirements to get it. Your efforts are falling short of what it actually takes to create that result. [11:18] Most of us, when we are underworking it’s simply because we are afraid of looking stupid and rejection. We respond to this fear by coming up with a lot of things to do instead of taking the massive action that is going to generate the results we want. [12:02] We need to solve this from the root cause which is overthinking. When we overthink, we lose sight of the purpose. [12:41] If our thoughts are all over the place then our emotions will be all over the place too. When emotions are high, intelligence is low. [13:41] First, put your thoughts down on paper. When you’re overthinking your thoughts are not doing you any good inside your head. Write down your problem and all your thoughts about the problem. [14:41] You solve overthinking by making a decision and moving forward. Whatever decision you make is non-negotiable. [15:29] Overworking isn’t serving you or your business. Underworking isn’t serving you or your business. Both of these are caused by overthinking by letting your brain run you instead of you running the show. [15:52] You can solve overthinking by getting your thoughts out on paper, making a swift decision, and moving forward. On today’s episode, I am talking about making transitions in our lives. I am also talking about the one thing you need and the one thing you don’t need to do it gracefully. Can we do transitions gracefully? Well, we can certainly try to transition gracefully. I talk about confidence vs. self-confidence. What are the differences and what do you need to navigate through transitions. In This Episode: [01:05] This year has been a big year for many of us and it has created an opportunity or necessity for many of us to make some pretty significant transitions in some aspect of our lives. [02:15] The process of a transition is challenging and uncomfortable. [03:08] Transition naturally brings up a lot of our emotional challenges. [04:01] Transitions are tricky because they bring up all of that old stuff for us to work on plus we’re adding these new intentional things that we are working on. [05:31] Self-confidence is knowing that you can handle yourself no matter. [06:16] You won’t have confidence with things that you haven’t figured out yet. [06:39] Self-confidence is something you create with self-talk. [07:33] Having your own back means you are always asking yourself to grow and do better. [08:19] If you know that you have to fail your way to confidence and you choose to have your own back the whole way there you can feel the momentum behind that idea and be compelled to move forward. [09:21] Self-confidence begins with how you talk to yourself, how you treat yourself, and what you make things mean about you when they do or don’t go your way. [10:22] You can assign meaning to both negative and positive outcomes that will impact your self-confidence. [10:38] How can you have your own back no matter what? What would that look like for you? [11:01] Use this transition phase as an opportunity to build your self-confidence and to build a powerful and loving relationship with yourself. One of the fundamental things that I teach as part of Be Brilliant, and I want you to cultivate for yourself, is to become very protective of the life that you want. Think of your time as your most precious asset. How you spend your time will determine what you create in your life. You need to be the gatekeeper of your time and energy, so that you have the capacity to build what you really want. Saying no is a necessary skill. And there are two ways to say no - unintentionally and intentionally. In this episode we are talking about trade-offs, unintentional ways that we say no. I'm walking you through 4 steps to help you uncover both your yes's and your no's, so you can be more empowered with your time and energy. And I've got 6 examples of sneaky trade-offs that most of us are doing, so I want you to be on the lookout for these in your life! Ps, make sure you are subscribed to the show, and I’d love to hear what you think of this episode! Take a screenshot in your player and tag me @linsibrownson on Instagram. Key Takeaways: There are two kinds of no – intentional (a.k.a. boundaries) and unintentional (a.k.a. trade-offs). Be protective of the life you want - honor the time and energy that is required to have what matters to you. Follow these 4 steps to make powerful choices in your business: Aim, Uncover, Investigate, Champion. 6 sneaky tradeoffs to watch out for. If you're saying yes to obligation, you're saying no to joy. Maybe it's managing your daily schedule, completing a course or embracing a healthy habit. Whatever it is, one of your obstacles is definitely the thought "I'm behind." In this episode, I've got two examples to show you exactly how this plays out and why it's not useful. And good news, it's also never true! So you can stop thinking it immediately, and start moving forward a lot faster. "You'll never get ahead while thinking you're behind." For transcript and show notes, visit https://www.linsibrownson.com/podcast/73 In the community of Hoedspruit, Limpopo in South Africa, people's lives are interlinked. The adage "it takes a village" is a truism here. People depend on each other, as they each contribute something valuable as well. The town is both farm and safari; The perfect setting for travelers looking for both simplicity and adventure within nature. Giraffes (Twiga in Swahili) make everyday appearances. So naturally, the global impact of COVID-19 has been devastating to this travel-based community. And yet, many of its residents are looking for possibilities rather than worries. Which is exactly what my guest, Bianca Black, has done. Her Mission has always been to celebrate people and contribute to her community. She has an eye for beautiful things, and a desire to share stories. She also has access (resources, privilege, and language) to create a platform that brings people together. In this episode, Bianca and I are talking about creating community through commerce. We talk about the mission behind all of her businesses (what led to this pivot) and where they are going next with Africa Unboxed. I hope you enjoy this brilliant conversation with Bianca Black. Today I am sharing a powerful tool for relationships - or what I like to call "people problems." And it's not only relationships, this can be useful for pretty much any problem where something or someone is making you miserable. Ps, make sure you are subscribed to Be Brilliant In Your Business Podcast, and I’d love to hear what you think of this episode! Take a screenshot in your player and tag me @linsibrownson on Instagram. Key Takeaways: We believe that our life experiences are simply observations about what is true in the world. Positive relationships require us to own our own stories and manage our own emotional life. Trying to be accommodating is not being accommodating. It's being manipulative. When a story is highly charged, separate out the facts. Hey Mavericks, today I am sharing a piece of business advice that I recently gave to a friend of mine. This is my personal experience after spending lots of time and energy doing it the hard way. The reason I am sharing my story is because the advice itself sounds simple...almost like a platitude. But I promise you it's not. My hope is that this will help you notice where you're doing this in your business, so you can move forward faster. Ps, make sure you are subscribed to the show, and I’d love to hear what you think of this episode! Take a screenshot in your player and tag me @linsibrownson on Instagram. Key Takeaways: No matter what you sell, your MINDSET IS HOW you will confidently back up your offer. What makes something easier or harder to sell is your belief that it's the best option. If you don't know what you want to sell, choose one anyway. It will move you forward versus keeping you stuck in "I don't know" land. We all want to enjoy our life. We want to feel proud and satisfied with the work we do, and delight in the small moments that give us meaning. But as much as we hear, and conceptually understand, that "this is all there is," the idea of sufficiency trips many of us up...Because it causes us to question "What's the point of ambition if we already have sufficiency?" Many of us are afraid that if we allow ourselves to truly love our life exactly as it is, then we will lose our desire for more. But the opposite is true. In this episode I'm talking about how sufficiency creates more, not less. Ps, make sure you are subscribed to the show, and I’d love to hear what you think of this episode! Why being satisfied with things exactly as they are will NOT stop you from creating or having more. Our inner critic serves a valuable purpose, unless you use it against yourself. Call it ambition, perfectionism, logical thinking....whatever you call it, the desire to know the fastest and best way to achieve things often makes them harder to achieve. In this episode I'm sharing some hindsight wisdom that I use to help me keep moving forward even when I wonder "am I doing this right?" Key Takeaways: Trying to figure out the right way to do some thing is the slowest way of doing some thing. The right way only exists in hindsight (and only if you choose to label it as "right"). Your future self would rather have you be committed than right. Trying to figure out the right way is the slowest and most painful way to do it. Let's talk about fluffy thoughts! These are positive thoughts that sound lovely, but don't actually help you create the things you want in your business. We have collectively labeled positivity as "good" or "right," and adopted this idea that positive thinking is the golden rule of success. But positivity is not inherently useful. Sometimes it is a sneaky saboteur that stops us from reaching our goals. Today we are exploring some of these fluffy thoughts, and looking at what really happens when you think them. Key Takeaways: Your thoughts create your feelings, which drive your actions. Instead of labeling a thought positive or negative, take a look at the outcome it produces to decide if it's a useful thought, or not. 5 fluffy thoughts to be aware of, and exactly why they aren't useful. How to find new thoughts that move you forward right away. Ps, make sure you are subscribed to the show, and I’d love to hear what you think of this episode! Let's talk about systems! My guest today is Shannon Baker, an expert at organizing and creating systems that simplify the way you run your business. Our time matters. It's the one thing that we cannot create more of. As business owners, we are constantly working to manage our time better, so we can live the way we want to AND get things done. Enter, systems and processes. So why is it that so many small business owners AVOID building systems that would free up time, earn them more money, and make everyone's experience better? Because it seems hard to do. It can sound complex, which makes it daunting for anyone who already feels pressed for time. But it doesn't have to be, which is why I wanted to bring Shannon on the show. She makes it simple, and today she is sharing a 3-step process to help you become a master at building relationships with potential new clients. Key Takeaways: You need a client database. You're more likely to use a simple system than a fancy one. Clients form their opinion of your relationship fast - so responsiveness is key. The best news ever - you can build these time-saving systems a few minutes at a time. No matter how busy you are, you'll definitely have time for this. In this episode I am inviting you into my coaching session with Carol, a life coach who is feeling stretched thin and wishing she had more time to work on her business. I asked Carol questions to help us really uncover what she's feeling and doing right now, and what she wants to be doing for her business. And then we looked at what's really getting in the way. She thinks that "there just isn't enough time" and has a lot of reasons to back that up. But as we'll explore, time is not keeping her from having fun, being creative, bringing in more clients, or any of her desired results. Notice how Carol's energy shifts from exhausted to inspired as we talk through this. It's really a powerful experience, and I hope you'll enjoy listening and walk away inspired too. Key Takeaways: Time is always sufficient. Your relationship with time will determine whether it feels scarce or abundant. Busy-ness produces a net negative result, because you spend more energy than what you receive in desired outcomes. Entrepreneurs often try to solve problems by taking different action. But this only intensifies the urge to keep taking more action instead of taking better action. You will spend every minute that you have. Every minute you spend intentionally creating your business lifestyle, is a minute that you are being successful. "You will spend every minute that you have, either on creating something you want or something you don't want." Get ready to have your mind blown, because you’ve never thought about busy-ness like this before. We think that being busy is a thing that happens to us. “Life gets busy.” “I’m busy with work!” But no, my friends, that isn’t how busy-ness works. In this episode I’m going to tell you what busy-ness really is, and introduce you to a concept called buffering that will change your life. I’m giving you both an overview and a specific example of how to use my favorite tool, so you can start to coach yourself away from busy-ness and get control over your time and energy again. And if you are ready to take your goal to the finish line, The DASH Plan is my new program to get you there.
