My guest this week is Bob Pomann, who discovered his unique ability to tell a story through sound while doing sound effects for the original Saturday Night Live. He went on to create Pomann Sound, a full-service audio-post and sound design house located in midtown Manhattan on the Penthouse floor, now in its 38th year, going strong since 1984. Bob went on to design sound for Disney's long-form animated series, Doug, and his specialized sound can be heard on series including Little Einsteins, Kids Next Door for over 800 animated episodes. He's also worked with all the major ad agencies on campaigns for major brands like Subway, Nicorette, and Verizon Fios, and in 2010 was the Gold Winner in the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival for his work on the Dos Equis “The Most Interesting Man In The World” campaign. During the interview we talked about having a studio in Manhattan, getting client approvals for Atmos mixes, getting started in the business as a high-school intern, some great stories about the early days of the business in New York, and much more. I spoke with Bob via zoom from his home studio in the New Jersey. On the intro I'll take a look at the possible end of California's 7 Year Rule and what that means for artists, and how songwriting is evolving. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 83353544, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

One of the perks of being a parent is the ability to exert your influences on them. You literally have the power to determine what language they use, their view of the world, whether to call them Kleenex or tissues, and most importantly--what kind of music they listen to.Do you just blast them with Kids Bop, Disney Radio and Little Einsteins? Or do you survey the history of music, culling the best sounds from the past seven decades, in the hopes that they will develop a love and appreciation for the classic?I think you already know the path that the dads at The New Dad Rock chose; Ween!In this week's episode, Steve unearths a mix he made his 5-year old daughter over a decade ago. Wil complains bitterly about the lack of good science in the children's television programme: "The Little Einsteins". Also, their faces. Gil tries to make things better by reminding Wil that the best episodes had crocodiles. Show notes: The original, massively misused research on Mozart's music and IQ - Rauscher FH, Shaw GL, and Ky CN. (1993). "Music and spatial task performance". Nature. 365 (6447): 611. doi:10.1038/365611a0. PMID 8413624. Turns out the original study wasn't about babies at all, and Wil's memory of this research is completely different that what it really involved.

With so much technology and so many media choices at our fingertips today, its harder than ever to know what we should allow in our homes or not. If you have young kids that you want to protect, the challenge gets even harder!  So where do we begin when it comes to determining good media choices for our kids? In today’s episode, we start to dive into that.  This week’s episode comes from Chelsea! She sent in an audio messaged to ask about media choices. Listen into hear her questions and my response! (And find out how to leave a voicemail question below!) Finding the Right Balance I think this is a hard balance to walk. As Christian parents, we want to be and need to be protective over what our kids are watching, reading, and being exposed to. We want to be protective and help mold and form their young imaginations and questions.  But the other side of that is that we don’t want to be so suffocating with our rules and legalistic that they become overly curious, or we make them too naive, or even rebel in the future.  We want to protect and help guide our kids when they are young so that they are not exposed to things of the world too early. At the time same time, we want to help guide them through tricky waters while they are living under our roof and we can have open and honest conversations with them.  It’s definitely a hard balance to walk and the specific guidelines are going to differ from family to family.  Where our family is at right now So for example, we do allow most Disney movies in our home. We watch them as a family and have the chance to talk about what’s real in those movies, what’s not real, and it’s the perfect time to have discussions over character’s sins or moral issues. It becomes a great time to chat about why a certain character acted the way they did and if that is glorifying to God.  It allows us to explain to the kids that there are different religions and belief systems in the world but only one true God! Interaction with these movies and media allows us to start equipping their young minds.  At the same time, there are a lot of things we say no to. We always pre-screen “kids” movies before we let them watch them, they are not alone to choose things on Netflix without showing us first, and they are never ever allowed to surf on YouTube. On the rare occasion they watch something on YouTube, it’s only a tv show or movie we are familiar with and our watchful eye is on them to make sure they don’t click to something else.  With that said, they don’t watch move popular tv shows. They are allowed to watch many PBS shows (often with the opportunity to share why we believe a different way, such as with the show Dinosaur Train on PBS which is very evolutionary). But they are not allowed to watch most Nickelodeon, Disney, or other kid networks. Of course, this is made easy by the fact that we don’t have cable TV. We only stream off Netflix and Amazon Prime. I think the two exclusions to this are 1) Paw Patrol and 2) Little Einsteins which I believe is owned by Dinsey.  These rules will of course change and flow throughout the years as our children age. But as they grow older, our ideas of pre-screening everything will not change. I want to know what my kids are being exposed to. The same goes for reading material. In short, there is no definitive Biblical answer. We can’t point to one portion of Scripture and say, “see this gives us a list of what movies or TV shows are okay!”  But we can take what Scripture teaches, pull the principles from that, and pray that God would give us the wisdom to decide from family to family.  With that said, there are some incredible Christian tv shows that we use most of the time. Our favorites include:  Theo Owlegories What’s in the Bible And actually, I should mention an online service that we use and love. It’s called JellyTelly and it’s a kind of like a Christian Netflix for kids. It contains those three shows I mentioned plus a ton of other incredible ones! There are actually over 100 shows on there. I don’t have to worry about what my kids are clicing on or when they try out a new show.  Find out more at: https://youngwifesguide.com/jellytelly. It’s just $4.99 a month, so even cheaper than Netflix. Or you can get it for $49.99 for a whole year, which breaks down to two months free.  One last Sidenote: We must remember not to judge others and other families when they make media choices that are different than ours. Some things are plain sin that we must shield our children from, but a lot of other things fall into the gray area that we must decide for our family.  Want to leave a voicemail question? I want to cover YOUR questions and topics here on TTM! So if you have a question, please leave a voice mail (under 90 seconds) and I will try my hardest to answer it on the podcast or find someone more qualified to answer it

This episode we’ve got something for the younger fans as we check out the recently shuttered Disney Junior - Live on Stage! at Disney California Adventure.  This guide map describes the show by saying, ’Sing and Dance with your favorite Disney Junior Characters!'  There are no age or height requirements for this show and each production lasts roughly 23 minutes. Before we visit Mickey and his friends, here are five fast facts about Disney Junior - Live on Stage! 1.  Disney Junior - Live on Stage! opened at Disney California Adventure on April 11, 2003 under the name Playhouse Disney Live.  The show replaced the ABC Soap Opera Bistro, a restaurant that featured sets from famous ABC Soap Operas. 2.   The original version of the show that opened in 2003 was the same as the Playhouse Disney Live show that was running at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.  It featured characters from Bear In The Big Blue House, Rolie Polie Olie, Stanley and The Book of Pooh. 3. Over the years, the show has featured characters from other Playhouse Disney/Disney Junior shows including Jojo’s Circus, Handy Manny and Little Einsteins.  The current iteration of the show that we’ll hear today features Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Sofia the First, Doc McStuffins and Jake and the Never Land Pirates. 4.  A team of six puppeteers are cast for each show and they manipulate over twenty different puppets of the various characters who interact with the show’s human host and the audience. 5. All the characters in the show are voiced by their original voice actors including Corey Burton doing his incredible version of Hans Conried’s Captain Hook. Now it’s time to visit the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse at Disney Junior - Live on Stage!  Stay tuned afterwards as I give my thoughts on the show as you’ll be experiencing it with me as I watch for the very first time.  Also, this is a binaural recording, so if you have headphones put them on now as we enjoy Disney California Adventure’s Disney Junior - Live on Stage!
