On this edition of *What's Going On *, we focus on two topics that will have a major impact on the lives of Philadelphia-area residents: workers' rights and Philadelphia's historic future. First, we speak with David Stern, founding partner of Stern & Cohen, a firm recently recognized as a 2025 Gold Winner for Philadelphia's Favorite Workers' Compensation Firm. David helps us understand the basics of workers' compensation in Pennsylvania, explains a significant legal issue known as Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI), and discusses what injured workers need to know about protecting their rights, securing benefits, and navigating the claims process. Whether you've been injured on the job or simply want to better understand workplace protections, this conversation offers important guidance. Learn more at www.sterncohenlaw.com.  Then, we look ahead to Philadelphia's historic 2026 celebration with Michael Newmuis, Director of Philadelphia 2026, and Deputy Director Tyrone Dixon. As the city prepares to welcome more than half a million visitors for the FIFA World Cup 2026, Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and America's 250th birthday, our guests discuss how Philadelphia is preparing for this unprecedented moment. We explore opportunities for local businesses, community engagement, public safety, tourism, volunteerism, and how city leaders hope to ensure every neighborhood benefits from the economic and cultural impact of these global events. Stop Networking More — Start Networking Smarter What if the secret to growing your business wasn’t more connections — but *fewer*? This week on *A New Direction with Coach Jay Izso*, I sit down with David Ackert, Co-Founder and CEO of PipelinePlus and one of the most respected business development minds in the professional services world. Over the past two decades, Ackert has pioneered revenue acceleration programs for hundreds of professional services firms worldwide, and he’s bringing all of that hard-won wisdom to the show. When it comes to business development, professionals often struggle — not from a lack of opportunities, but from not knowing where to focus their attention. And it all starts with their networking. David’s Amazon bestselling book, *The Short List*, tackles that exact problem head-on. With countless LinkedIn connections and cluttered CRM databases, the real question becomes: “What is the best use of my time?” David’s answer is elegant, powerful, and completely counterintuitive to how most people think about networking. *The Short List* delivers a clear, actionable networking guide to identifying the people you need to prioritize and the techniques you can use to nurture those relationships into career catalysts — with a step-by-step plan and easy-to-use exercises for both newcomers and seasoned rainmakers alike. At the heart of the method is a very specific, curated list of people you want to stay in contact with — grouped into deliberate buckets and rated by factors like chemistry and potential for genuine collaboration. This isn’t just networking theory — it’s a proven networking system. *The Short List* is a Gold Winner of the 2025 Nonfiction Book Award, and David has lectured at USC’s Marshall School of Business, Carnegie Mellon, and UCLA School of Law. But beyond the accolades, this is a man whose life’s work is about the power of investing deeply in the right people — professionally *and* personally. Don’t miss this conversation. Learn how and who exactly deserves a spot on *your* short list. David Ackert’s book, “The Short List: How to Drive Business Development by Focusing on the People Who Matter Most” is the most practical applicable networking book I have ever read! The Short List is filled with great research, and diamonds of how to network.  It is not just a networking book, it is a book that will help you network with the right people that you can collaborate with that will ultimately become a win-win for both of you. The exercises in this book are fantastic.  Each exercise, will help you reevaluate your networking, build a better network, a more efficient network, maintain the network, and sets you up for success at any level. A word of CAUTION.  This book requires you to truly rethink not only how you are networking, but who you are networking with.  It’s going to definitely require not only a change of your mindset, but your behavior and actions. If you believe that networking should be strictly transactional think again.  As David Ackert explains it is about developing real relationships with the right people.  Then truly investing in those relationships not to simply help you, but that you can help each other. Fantastic book!  Highly recommend. Get your copy  of The Short List by clicking here. We are so grateful for the financial support of the sponsors of A New Direction. Ep. 82: Celtic Spirituality w/John Philip Newell

Holy Heretics: Losing Religion and Finding Jesus

Episode Summary:John Philip Newell is best described as “a wandering teacher with the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar.” Formerly the Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, John Philip joined me from his home in Edinburgh to offer a new, yet ancient way forward in a time when the empire has once again wedded and bedded Christianity.Long before the colonizing forces of imperial Christianity made their way to the British Isles, an indigenous form of spirituality nourished those sacred souls living in the borderlands of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The Celts believed divinity pervaded every aspect of life. There was no distinction between secular and sacred, human and divine. The Celtic vision of the world is essentially sacramental, perceiving God's presence in ordinary things like rocks, forests, springs, groves, hills, and meadows. “The Celtic approach to God opens up a world in which nothing is too common to be exalted and nothing is so exalted that it cannot be made common,” writes Esther De Waal. For them, the natural world is the container of the sacred and a gateway to the luminous—the holy intersection between mortals and the supernatural. These tribes bewildered the Roman church because they were relational rather than rational, inspirational rather than institutional, and indigenous instead of imperial. In this modern age, when we find ourselves divorced from the natural world, addicted to technology, controlled by institutional religion, and victims of an empire of our own making, there is a great deal to learn from the ancient Celts. We need nothing less than a reclamation of our humanity, a rekindling of the Beltaine Fire burning in every human heart. Most of us are still reeling from the recent presidential election. The dark forces of authoritarianism, patriarchy, and white supremacy are chronically ingrained in the highest levels of government, blessed and absolved by white Christianity. But here's what I'm slowly starting to believe—every dark ending births a new beginning. Evil never has the last word. We've been given a dark gift, a chance to resist and re-imagine the world as it should be. We are living in liminal time, “when we can't go back but we can't see the way forward,” writes my friend Melanie Mudge. What better time to wake up, “dream new dreams,” and rekindle the sacred flame in every human soul. As John Philip reminds us:“We live in a threshold moment. We are waking up to the earth again. We are awakening to the feminine and the desire to faithfully tend the interrelationship of all things. In this moment, politically, culturally, and religiously, we are witnessing the death throes of a shadow form of masculine power that has arrayed itself over against the earth and over against the sacredness of the feminine. This shadow form of power, however, has no ultimate future, for it is essentially false in its betrayal of the earth and the feminine. So in fear it is lashing out with unprecedented force. But it is not the deep spirit of this moment in time. Something else is trying to be born.”Celtic spirituality is needed now more than ever. Allow John Philip to lead you into deeper streams of indigenous wisdom where action and contemplation, vision and profound mystery light our collective way forward. His latest book, The Great Search, is out now. Bio:John Philip Newell (b 1953) is an internationally renowned Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being.Canadian by birth, and also Scottish, he resides with his wife Ali in the ecovillage of Findhorn in Scotland. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. His PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over fifteen books, including his award-winning publication, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His new book, also with HarperOne (and published in the UK by Wild Goose), is The Great Search (August 2024), in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it.Newell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher' following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic world, ‘wandering Scots' (or scotus vagans as they were called) seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar', combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual, the head as well as the heart, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. His writings have been translated into seven languages. In 2020 he relinquished his ordination as a minister of the Church of Scotland as no longer reflecting the heart of his belief in the sacredness of Earth and every human being. He continues, however, to see himself as ‘a grateful son of the Christian household' seeking to be in relationship with the wisdom of humanity's other great spiritual traditions. In 2011 John Philip was awarded the first-ever Contemplative Voices Award from the Shalem Institute in Washington DC for his prophetic work in the field of spirituality and compassion. In 2022 he received the Sacred Universe Award from the Well Center for Spirituality in Chicago, IL in recognition of his significant work in furthering humanity's relationship with the sacredness of Earth. Please follow us on social media (use the buttons below) and help us get the word out! In today's episode, EFG's Alli Murphy is joined by Teresa Hillis, Manager of Global and Community Impact at Expedia Group, Laura Ramsey, Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships at UNICEF USA and Mollye Rhea, President and Founder of For Momentum to talk about the winning initiative "Give The World A Shot."In the summer of 2021, UNICEF USA and Expedia Group and its family of brands - Expedia, Hotels.com, Vrbo, Orbitz, Travelocity, Hotwire, ebookers and CheapTickets - partnered with the shared goal to accelerate the equitable rollout of COVID-19 vaccines. At the time, less than 1% of the global supply of COVID vaccines was going to those living in low-income countries. In recognition of the scale of the world's largest ever vaccination program, Expedia Group committed to donating at least $10 million and enlisted the support of its brands and customers. From August 5 to September 5, 2021, each booking made via one of Expedia Group's mobile apps resulted in a $2 donation by Expedia Group to UNICEF's COVID-19 response. This was the brand's first cross-branded marketing campaign that spanned it's entire family of brands. The partners raised more than $10.5 million, enabled the delivery of 5 million vaccines and achieved more than 15 million impressions on Expedia Group's social media platforms. The CEOs of both organizations were also featured on CNN (which has almost a million prime-time viewers), and for earned media, they saw 516 media hits, which equates to a potential reach of 651 million.Give The World A Shot, as the campaign was aptly named, was crowned the Gold Winner in the Consumer-Activated Corporate-Donation category of our Halo Awards program. The initiative also took home the coveted title - Best of the Best.In today's episode, we'll explore:What makes for a best-in-class campaignWhy this campaign was unanimously crowned the "Best of the Best" by the judgesHow the partnership came to life and what they learned along the wayHow Expedia Group relied on UNICEF's expertise to roll out its first social impact campaign that spanned all Expedia Group brandsHow each organization's leadership teams bought inLaura & Teresa's top tips for successful cause partnershipsAnd more! This episode is brought to you by For Momentum.Links & NotesExpedia Group WebsiteExpedia Group LinkedInExpedia Group InstagramUNICEF USA WebsiteUNICEF USA TwitterUNICEF USA FacebookUNICEF USA InstagramFor Momentum WebsiteFor Momentum Research - Next Level PartnershipsFor Momentum Research - Key Elements Of Best In Class CampaignsHalo AwardsGive The World A Shot Halo Award Blog PostElevate Your Social ImpactSign up for Engage for Good's newsletterCheck out past podcast episodesAccess free resourcesCheck out our monthly webinarsLet Alli know what you think of the show!

My guest this week is Bob Pomann, who discovered his unique ability to tell a story through sound while doing sound effects for the original Saturday Night Live. He went on to create Pomann Sound, a full-service audio-post and sound design house located in midtown Manhattan on the Penthouse floor, now in its 38th year, going strong since 1984. Bob went on to design sound for Disney's long-form animated series, Doug, and his specialized sound can be heard on series including Little Einsteins, Kids Next Door for over 800 animated episodes. He's also worked with all the major ad agencies on campaigns for major brands like Subway, Nicorette, and Verizon Fios, and in 2010 was the Gold Winner in the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival for his work on the Dos Equis “The Most Interesting Man In The World” campaign. During the interview we talked about having a studio in Manhattan, getting client approvals for Atmos mixes, getting started in the business as a high-school intern, some great stories about the early days of the business in New York, and much more. I spoke with Bob via zoom from his home studio in the New Jersey.
