Episode Summary:John Philip Newell is best described as “a wandering teacher with the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar.” Formerly the Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, John Philip joined me from his home in Edinburgh to offer a new, yet ancient way forward in a time when the empire has once again wedded and bedded Christianity.Long before the colonizing forces of imperial Christianity made their way to the British Isles, an indigenous form of spirituality nourished those sacred souls living in the borderlands of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The Celts believed divinity pervaded every aspect of life. There was no distinction between secular and sacred, human and divine. The Celtic vision of the world is essentially sacramental, perceiving God's presence in ordinary things like rocks, forests, springs, groves, hills, and meadows. “The Celtic approach to God opens up a world in which nothing is too common to be exalted and nothing is so exalted that it cannot be made common,” writes Esther De Waal. For them, the natural world is the container of the sacred and a gateway to the luminous—the holy intersection between mortals and the supernatural. These tribes bewildered the Roman church because they were relational rather than rational, inspirational rather than institutional, and indigenous instead of imperial.In this modern age, when we find ourselves divorced from the natural world, addicted to technology, controlled by institutional religion, and victims of an empire of our own making, there is a great deal to learn from the ancient Celts. We need nothing less than a reclamation of our humanity, a rekindling of the Beltaine Fire burning in every human heart.Most of us are still reeling from the recent presidential election. The dark forces of authoritarianism, patriarchy, and white supremacy are chronically ingrained in the highest levels of government, blessed and absolved by white Christianity. But here's what I'm slowly starting to believe—every dark ending births a new beginning. Evil never has the last word. We've been given a dark gift, a chance to resist and re-imagine the world as it should be. We are living in liminal time, “when we can't go back but we can't see the way forward,” writes my friend Melanie Mudge.What better time to wake up, “dream new dreams,” and rekindle the sacred flame in every human soul. As John Philip reminds us:“We live in a threshold moment. We are waking up to the earth again. We are awakening to the feminine and the desire to faithfully tend the interrelationship of all things. In this moment, politically, culturally, and religiously, we are witnessing the death throes of a shadow form of masculine power that has arrayed itself over against the earth and over against the sacredness of the feminine. This shadow form of power, however, has no ultimate future, for it is essentially false in its betrayal of the earth and the feminine. So in fear it is lashing out with unprecedented force. But it is not the deep spirit of this moment in time. Something else is trying to be born.”Celtic spirituality is needed now more than ever. Allow John Philip to lead you into deeper streams of indigenous wisdom where action and contemplation, vision and profound mystery light our collective way forward. His latest book, The Great Search, is out now. Bio:John Philip Newell (b 1953) is an internationally renowned Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being.Canadian by birth, and also Scottish, he resides with his wife Ali in the ecovillage of Findhorn in Scotland. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland.His PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over fifteen books, including his award-winning publication, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His new book, also with HarperOne (and published in the UK by Wild Goose), is The Great Search (August 2024), in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it.Newell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher' following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic world, ‘wandering Scots' (or scotus vagans as they were called) seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar', combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual, the head as well as the heart, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. His writings have been translated into seven languages. In 2020 he relinquished his ordination as a minister of the Church of Scotland as no longer reflecting the heart of his belief in the sacredness of Earth and every human being. He continues, however, to see himself as ‘a grateful son of the Christian household' seeking to be in relationship with the wisdom of humanity's other great spiritual traditions.In 2011 John Philip was awarded the first-ever Contemplative Voices Award from the Shalem Institute in Washington DC for his prophetic work in the field of spirituality and compassion. In 2022 he received the Sacred Universe Award from the Well Center for Spirituality in Chicago, IL in recognition of his significant work in furthering humanity's relationship with the sacredness of Earth.Please follow us on social media (use the buttons below) and help us get the word out! He also holds a Shoulder Fellowship from Western University and Harvard Medical School. Since 2012, he has been associated with The University of British Columbia as Clinical Associate Professor.Danny also contributes as Industry Advisor and Columnist at the Forbes Technology Council. He has co-authored more than 30 publications, and is widely sought as a presenter on surgical techniques. His ongoing research includes novel methods of surgical education and skill acquisition to deliver safe surgery towards improved patient outcomes.He was awarded as the Gold Winner at the Reimagine Education Awards 2020 organised by the Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards and Conference.Danny is a Fellow at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and Clinical Professor at UBC Department of Orthopaedics, Vancouver, British Columbia. He is also the Manuscript Reviewer at the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Inc., and the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He was also associated with the Clinical Faculty Advisory Council and Residency Training Committee at The University of British Columbia. About Precision OSPrecision OS is a medical - grade learning platform to advance surgical readiness.Surgery residents are getting less hands-on experience than ever, and it's affecting their confidence and autonomy. A significant percentage don't feel ready to independently perform core procedures upon residency completion,1 and over 90% opt for an additional fellowship year. In an effort to address this, The American Board of Surgery (ABS) recommended “rather than increasing the quantity of cases, we should be increasing the quality of teaching both clinical and procedural skills.”The lack of access to high-quality surgical education is also affecting medical device companies. In an era of rapidly advancing technologies and procedures, training is often a rate-limiting factor. Current training approaches vary in effectiveness, and are not helping to address cost, and, most importantly, surgical mastery.About Dinis Guarda profile and Channelshttps://www.openbusinesscouncil.orghttps://www.intelligenthq.comhttps://www.hedgethink.com/https://www.citiesabc.com/More interviews and research videos on

In today's episode, EFG's Alli Murphy is joined by Teresa Hillis, Manager of Global and Community Impact at Expedia Group, Laura Ramsey, Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships at UNICEF USA and Mollye Rhea, President and Founder of For Momentum to talk about the winning initiative "Give The World A Shot."In the summer of 2021, UNICEF USA and Expedia Group and its family of brands - Expedia, Hotels.com, Vrbo, Orbitz, Travelocity, Hotwire, ebookers and CheapTickets - partnered with the shared goal to accelerate the equitable rollout of COVID-19 vaccines. At the time, less than 1% of the global supply of COVID vaccines was going to those living in low-income countries.In recognition of the scale of the world's largest ever vaccination program, Expedia Group committed to donating at least $10 million and enlisted the support of its brands and customers. From August 5 to September 5, 2021, each booking made via one of Expedia Group's mobile apps resulted in a $2 donation by Expedia Group to UNICEF's COVID-19 response. This was the brand's first cross-branded marketing campaign that spanned it's entire family of brands.The partners raised more than $10.5 million, enabled the delivery of 5 million vaccines and achieved more than 15 million impressions on Expedia Group's social media platforms. The CEOs of both organizations were also featured on CNN (which has almost a million prime-time viewers), and for earned media, they saw 516 media hits, which equates to a potential reach of 651 million.Give The World A Shot, as the campaign was aptly named, was crowned the Gold Winner in the Consumer-Activated Corporate-Donation category of our Halo Awards program. The initiative also took home the coveted title - Best of the Best.In today's episode, we'll explore:What makes for a best-in-class campaignWhy this campaign was unanimously crowned the "Best of the Best" by the judgesHow the partnership came to life and what they learned along the wayHow Expedia Group relied on UNICEF's expertise to roll out its first social impact campaign that spanned all Expedia Group brandsHow each organization's leadership teams bought inLaura & Teresa's top tips for successful cause partnershipsAnd more!This episode is brought to you by For Momentum.Links & NotesExpedia Group WebsiteExpedia Group LinkedInExpedia Group InstagramUNICEF USA WebsiteUNICEF USA TwitterUNICEF USA FacebookUNICEF USA InstagramFor Momentum WebsiteFor Momentum Research - Next Level PartnershipsFor Momentum Research - Key Elements Of Best In Class CampaignsHalo AwardsGive The World A Shot Halo Award Blog PostElevate Your Social ImpactSign up for Engage for Good's newsletterCheck out past podcast episodesAccess free resourcesCheck out our monthly webinarsLet Alli know what you think of the show!
My guest this week is Bob Pomann, who discovered his unique ability to tell a story through sound while doing sound effects for the original Saturday Night Live. He went on to create Pomann Sound, a full-service audio-post and sound design house located in midtown Manhattan on the Penthouse floor, now in its 38th year, going strong since 1984. Bob went on to design sound for Disney's long-form animated series, Doug, and his specialized sound can be heard on series including Little Einsteins, Kids Next Door for over 800 animated episodes. He's also worked with all the major ad agencies on campaigns for major brands like Subway, Nicorette, and Verizon Fios, and in 2010 was the Gold Winner in the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival for his work on the Dos Equis “The Most Interesting Man In The World” campaign. During the interview we talked about having a studio in Manhattan, getting client approvals for Atmos mixes, getting started in the business as a high-school intern, some great stories about the early days of the business in New York, and much more. I spoke with Bob via zoom from his home studio in the New Jersey. On the intro I'll take a look at the possible end of California's 7 Year Rule and what that means for artists, and how songwriting is evolving. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 83353544, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };
This is the personal story of Dragana Cvijic, one of the best pivot-players in the history of handball. She's a true warrior and is known for her massive energy on the court! Her attitude and spirit when she plays is almost scary - but outside of the court she's truly a great and kind person.She grew up in Serbia, and was just a little child when she experienced the war in Balkan. Her father went to war for many years, and this really affected her relationship with him. We talk about the day her city was attacked, and she was hiding in the apartment with her mom, hoping that the bombs would not hit their block. «When you experience war it stays in you forever, somehow».Of course we talk about her career as a handballplayer. We talk about the life in Russia right now (she plays for CSKA Moskva). This conversation was such a great one, and it gave me a good perspective. I hope you Enjoy this episode! Thank you for sharing your story

We're walking the walk here on the show by digging deeper into conversations with the type of folks we often interview on the live stream version of the show each Tuesday morning. But not everyone we want to talk to there can make it to a regimented, scheduled show. And, we have some very interesting people within the walls at Cornett whose expertise comes to bear for our clients. We also do some pretty neat things as a group that are well worth sharing with you. Why not give you access to those subject matter experts, and experiences too? In today's episode, we get to know Cornett senior web developer Matt Hudgins. Not only is he an award winning web-developer and incredibly talented coder, but he has an interesting side gig, if you will. He's our resident TikTok influencer. Matt produces how-to's on coding and technology, showing off the cool tricks and inventions he tinkers with on the side. Some of his videos have earned over 1 million views and he's collected almost 40,000 followers on the platform. AdWeek thought Matt's nights and weekends hobby was so interesting, it honored him with a Gold Winner award at the magazine's Side Show Awards this fall. He was one of two Cornett employees with Side Show awards. You'll meet the other soon enough here on Digging Deeper. We talked to Matt about his rise on TikTok, got some tips and tricks from him for you to use on the platform, and found out that one of his favorite TikTok-ers is the tech talk drag queen Anna Lytical. The author of Faith Beyond Belief: Stories of Good People Who Left Their Church Behind, Dr. Johnston feels the spiritual development stages have the power to bring an end to religious intolerance and should be part of the general knowledge of our culture.
