Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Gullah Gullah Island. Gullah Gullah Island is a musical children's program created by Maria Magdalena Perez, Kathleen Minton Catapano, and Kit Laybourne. It premiered on Nick Jr. on October 24, 1994.  Gullah Gullah Island is inspired by the Gullah culture of St. Helena Island, South Carolina. It centers on Ron Alston (Ron Daise) and Natalie Alston (Natalie Daise), who teach their kids and the kids at home valuable lessons through song.  Joining in the fun is the giant frog Binyah Binyah (Philip D. Garcia, Justin Campbell). Vanessa Baden, who portrays Vanessa Alston, also starred in Nickelodeon's Kenan & Kel.  Gullah Gullah Island was positively received by critics, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Pre-School Children's Series in 1997, as well as nominations for multiple NAACP Image Awards. Aaron and Josh talk about their history with the show, the first episode, the music, and the show's incorporation of the Gullah culture. Thank you @Defunctland for the content on The History of Gullah Gullah Island.. Gullah Gullah Island was educational like other preschool shows airing at the time, but its lessons went beyond counting and learning the alphabet. Similar to Sea Island Montage, the series primarily sought to teach audiences about the real culture of the Gullah people, a group of Black Americans descended from enslaved Africans brought to the Sea Islands of South Carolina centuries ago. It was unlike any series Nickelodeon—or any other American network—had ever produced. The concept was a hit with kids and adults: The series ran for 70 episodes and received numerous awards and nominations. For many children watching Nick Jr. in the 1990s, the show was their introduction to a vibrant culture. For Ron and Natalie Daise, it was their life.

Noel MacNeal is a puppeteer who has performed in various Henson productions, working on Sesame Street on-and-off since 1982. His most well-known work has been his portrayal of Bear, the lead character of Bear in the Big Blue House.Born and raised in New York City's Central Harlem, he began his puppetry career on the television series The Great Space Coaster (taking over from John Lovelady as Knock Knock) and later made his way to Sesame Street, joining the show as a "puppet wrangler."MacNeal's first Muppet performance was a supermarket cashier in a Grover sketch; MacNeal flubbed his one speaking line, to tell Grover that his register was closed and to go to another line, which resulted in his character getting a close-up in a pick-up shot.MacNeal's other Sesame roles have included several full-bodied Snuffleupaguses, including Snuffy's mommy at various points, and his daddy in the unaired "Snuffy's Parents Get a Divorce." In the feature film Follow That Bird, he performed Madame Chairbird and doubled for Caroll Spinney as Big Bird in a scene where he's running from Bert and Ernie's plane. MacNeal has puppeteered Big Bird on several other occasions, such as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In addition to performing, he has played an active role in hiring and training puppeteers for local Sesame Street productions in Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Jordan, Palestine, and India. During MacNeal's time on Bear in the Big Blue House, he served as principal performer, director, and wrote a few episodes. In 2005, he reprised the role of Bear for Breakfast with Bear. His more prominent non-Henson credits include the baby dragon Magellan on Eureeka's Castle, Leon MacNeal in The Puzzle Place, and Raphael in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. He also puppeteered on Between the Lions (taking over Lionel for the last two seasons), Blue's Room, and Oobi (Kako). MacNeal spent a stint as host (and writer) for Sprout's The Good Night Show and has puppeteered on more adult series including 30 Rock, Oz, Chappelle's Show (in the "Knee High Park" spoof of Sesame Street), and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. He is the resident puppeteer for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. As a writer, he contributed scripts to The Puzzle Place, Eureeka's Castle, Gullah Gullah Island, The Magic School Bus, and Cyberchase. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Gwan Big Up Ya self!! On the eve (almost) of Gullah Festival on my amazing island of St. Helena, I dive a bit into the history and the history of my Gran-ditty (how I say it haha)!!The Gullah people have been in Americas back yard for many moons. A fabulous mix of Caribbean  and creole elements along with African roots, Gullah people arrived in the late 1500s and were instrumental in the development of many southern comfort foods, music, and story telling. Currently only 10% of the people still claim ties.  While sipping on Smirnoff Ice "Screwdriver" by way of my Drink Plug, I infuse the vibe with Gullah Gullah island by Dear Silas. Natalie and Ron Daise are storytellers.Or, as they'd describe it, Natalie is a storyteller and Ron is a kind of keeper of stories, collecting and documenting. Together, they have been gathering, interpreting and sharing stories in South Carolina for decades. The couple is best known for "Gullah Gullah Island," a children's television series that aired on Nickelodeon from 1994 to 1998. Their storytelling extended well after that show ended. It's never stopped, really, and the ways they tell stories have continued to evolve, even during the pandemic. Co-host Gavin McIntyre and I spoke with them about why they tell stories, what they see as their role in their communities now and the serendipitous way their TV show came to be.They also shared how they've seen perceptions of the term “Gullah” change and why it's so important to them to show that Gullah culture and language is not only still alive but is constantly evolving. Listen now for more. This is the first installment of SC Voices, an occasional Understand SC series that will feature conversational interviews with South Carolinians sharing their stories.Who would you like to hear from next?
