This week on Sent from Disneyland, we set sail through Frontierland with two vintage postcards and a fascinating look at a forgotten piece of Disney history. Our first postcard, mailed in 1971, features the Mark Twain Riverboat steaming along the Rivers of America with the Matterhorn rising in the distance. A simple note to a friend captures a memorable day spent at Disneyland with family, while the postcard itself serves as a gateway into the history of the Tru-Vue Company. Long before View-Master became a household name, Tru-Vue was producing stereoscopic film viewers that brought destinations and stories to life in three dimensions. In this episode, we explore the evolution of stereoscopes, Disney's licensing agreement with Tru-Vue, and the Frontierland film cards produced during Disneyland's earliest years. A second postcard takes us back to 1959 and the Disneyland Railroad, featuring the C.K. Holliday pausing at the original Frontierland station and water tower. That image connects directly to the Frontierland Tru-Vue card in the collection, allowing us to examine all seven scenes preserved on the film strip—from the Frontierland entrance and stagecoaches to pack mules, the Mark Twain, and rare views of attractions that no longer exist in their original form. The episode concludes with an incoming postcard from Oregon's beloved Enchanted Forest theme park, sparking a discussion about regional storybook parks, childhood memories, and the unique charm of attractions inspired by classic fairy tales rather than major intellectual properties. Disney is changing... and we have opinions. In this episode of Hangin' at the Hangar Bar, Scott and Candice take a break from trip planning and nostalgia to talk about some of the biggest changes happening across Walt Disney World. From major attraction overhauls to entirely new lands, Disney is investing billions into the future of the parks—but are they making the right decisions? Before we dive in, we start with an important correction regarding Star Tours and Star Wars Launch Bay, proving once again that we are always willing to admit when we get something wrong. Then we tackle some of the biggest topics currently shaping the future of Walt Disney World:• The massive Carousel of Progress refurbishment and why it has Disney fans divided• What a Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic means for Disney's future storytelling• The transformation of Frontierland and the arrival of Cars-themed Piston Peak• Villains Land and whether Disney's biggest expansion in decades can live up to the hype• The end of Muppets Courtyard and the arrival of Monstropolis• Rock 'n' Roller Coaster starring The Muppets and our first impressions of the reimagined attraction• Tropical Americas replacing DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney's Animal Kingdom• Indiana Jones, Encanto, Bluey, and the future identity of Animal Kingdom• Disney's growing focus on Walt Disney himself as part of the guest experience• Whether all of this construction is creating a new Disney Renaissance—or simply a lot of wallsAlong the way, we discuss what Disney is getting right, where we're still skeptical, and which projects have us the most excited for the future. What changes are you most excited about? Which ones make you nervous? Let us know on social media or in our Discord community. As always, thank you for hanging out with us at the Hangar Bar.Remember... there's always a great big beautiful tomorrow.
In the final installment of Imagineering May, Sent from Disneyland explores the stories behind two overlooked Disneyland designers whose names still appear on a Main Street window. A 1972 postcard featuring the Disneyland Railroad and Floral Mickey leads into the life of art director Wade R. Rubottom, whose work helped shape Main Street, U.S.A. before he went on to design other theme parks across America. Then, a 1974 Mark Twain postcard highlights the career of George Patrick, a Frontierland art director whose influence can still be felt throughout Disneyland's western landscapes. Along the way, we uncover vintage postcard messages, park attendance and weather from the day of each visit, and the fascinating history of Disneyland's early designers who worked alongside Walt Disney during the park's construction. The episode concludes with a surprise Postcrossing postcard featuring the Dutch scene from "it's a small world," a deep dive into late-1970s Disneyland postcard booklets, and a look back at a month celebrating the Imagineers, artists, and cast members who helped build Disneyland. Travel through Disneyland history with postcards, park memories, and the artistry of Disney Legend Sam McKim. This episode begins with a colorful 1960 multi-view postcard featuring Sleeping Beauty Castle, the Mark Twain, the Jungle Cruise, the Monorail, and Submarine Voyage—capturing the excitement of Disneyland during one of its most ambitious eras of expansion. Along the way, we uncover the story behind the postcard's unusual dual cancels and trace a summer day in the park filled with long hours, warm weather, and over 22,000 guests. The history segment shines a spotlight on Sam McKim, one of the most influential artists in Disney theme park history. From early concept art for Frontierland and Rivers of America to attraction posters, souvenir Fun Maps, and designs for the 1964 New York World's Fair, McKim's artwork helped define the visual identity of Disneyland and beyond. His career stretched from Disneyland's opening years to EPCOT and Euro Disney, leaving a legacy still visible throughout the parks today. The second postcard visits Carefree Corner in 1963, offering a glimpse into a quieter but personal side of Disneyland history as guests registered for travel assistance and souvenirs in the park's official information center. The episode continues exploring McKim's later Imagineering work, including contributions to Haunted Mansion, Hall of Presidents, and Disney park cartography. Finally, an incoming postcard featuring a Bruce Lee stamp and motivational quote ties Disney inspiration to creativity and action, while also leading to a fascinating look at Disneyland attendance differences between a busy spring Saturday and Easter Sunday in 1963. From Main Street windows to souvenir maps and vintage mail, this episode celebrates the artists and guests who helped preserve Disneyland's magic one postcard at a time. Adam Duckworth, founder and president of Travelmation, has been a Disney fan for as long as he can remember. His parents honeymooned at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort at Walt Disney World Resort, and Duckworth vacationed at the Florida theme park nearly every year in his youth. As an adult (and a father), a Disney trip remains his preference — he even rented out Grizzly Hall in Magic Kingdom's Frontierland for his 40th birthday celebration. And Disneyland popcorn? He’s a big fan of that, too. In this episode of Humans of Travel, Duckworth talks about all of the above and the launch of Travelmation, a thriving host agency with more than 2,700 travel advisors in its ranks today. With an education background and lots of experience rallying volunteers at his church, Duckworth has been — and continues to be — a cheerleader for so many people. This week, Sent from Disneyland continues its mailbox tour with two more lost Disneyland mailboxes—and one modern postcard surprise. First, a 1976 Matterhorn postcard takes us to a forgotten Tomorrowland mailbox once located beneath the Skyway, Monorail, and PeopleMover. Then, a 1965 Frontierland postcard leads us to the mailbox hidden beside the Westward Ho Trading Company and its iconic wooden Indian photo spot. Finally, an incoming 2026 postcard featuring vintage stamps and a Sinatra quote ties today's mail magic back to Disneyland. Along the way: park history, extinct attractions, vintage stamps, and the stories written on the backs of postcards. “You can face your history and still love your country. This is my attempt at doing that.” — Beverly GageWhen the Yale Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Beverly Gage finished her almost nine-hundred-page biography of J. Edgar Hoover, she needed a little break before starting her next book on Ronald Reagan. So she got in her old Subaru and spent six months on the road driving across America to prepare for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The result of these thirteen separate road trips is This Land Is Your Land: A Road Trip Through US History. Gage's Subaru broke down constantly. So, from time to time, did her health. But the American history she uncovered is anything but broken down.Historians, Gage argues, don't think enough about geography. Visiting the homes of the first four US Presidents from Virginia, she saw how closely America's slaveholding elite actually lived. Driving through the small towns on the Erie Canal, she found the corridor where abolitionism, women's rights, temperance, and reform Christianity were all born. At Disneyland, the final chapter in her road trip, she went to the Abraham Lincoln stage show and imagined Main Street USA as Walt Disney's parable about US history. The gap between the imagined America and the real one (yes, there is a real one, she insists) is where true history lives.Gage's thesis is that there is a third road — too much of a backstreet these days — between American pride and shame in its history. Her book maps that path. You can face up to your history, she argues, and still love your country. In a moment when inane triumphalism and apocalyptic despair dominate America's sense of itself, Gage's quiet historical reflection feels like the rarest of national commodities. Ben Franklin wondered in 1787 if the sun was rising or setting on America. Two hundred and fifty years later, Beverly Gage got in her Subaru and went on the road to find out. Five Takeaways• Out of the Library and Into the Subaru: Gage won the Pulitzer Prize for her eight-hundred-page biography of J. Edgar Hoover. Her next book is on Ronald Reagan. Between the two, she needed a break. So she got in her unreliable Subaru and drove across America in thirteen trips, covering six months on the road, to prepare for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The Subaru broke down constantly. The history she found was worth it.• Historians Don't Think Enough About Geography: Visiting the homes of the first four presidents from Virginia, Gage saw how closely the slaveholding elite actually lived — neighbours, not just names in a textbook. Driving the Erie Canal in upstate New York, she found the corridor where abolitionism, women's rights, temperance, and reform Christianity were all born in a handful of small towns. Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony were neighbours. History on the ground is different from history in books.• Disneyland Is a Parable About American History: When Walt Disney opened Disneyland in 1955, Main Street USA reached back to his own childhood in the age of William McKinley. Frontierland told the heroic story of the American past. Tomorrowland celebrated Cold War technological optimism. Most visitors don't think about this. Gage does. She went to the Abraham Lincoln stage show. The gap between the imagined America and the real one is where the history lives.• The Third Road: Between Pride and Shame: Gage encountered Americans who said: celebrate the country, I want nothing to do with that. She encountered others who said: only say the good stuff. She wanted to live in the tension between them. You can face your history and still love your country. That's the thesis of the book, and the argument for how to approach 250 years of American history in a moment when both triumphalism and despair are on offer.• Upstate New York Was Where Americans Reimagined Themselves: Gage's favourite chapter. In the 1840s and 1850s along the Erie Canal, Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony were actually neighbours. They were writing their own constitutions and rethinking the Declaration of Independence. Douglass gave his famous “What to the slave is the Fourth of July?” speech in Rochester. They were in it together. If you want to find the third road, this is where to start. About the GuestBeverly Gage is the John Lewis Gaddis Professor of History and American Studies at Yale. She is the author of G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography, and This Land Is Your Land: A Road Trip Through US History. She is currently at work on a biography of Ronald Reagan.References:• This Land Is Your Land: A Road Trip Through US History by Beverly Gage.• G-Man: J. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad feels like pure fun: a runaway mine train, a mountain of red rock, and a few perfect sight gags that hit at 35 miles an hour. But the ride's real story starts way earlier, in the myths America told itself about the frontier and the Western movies that turned those myths into pop culture. We follow that thread from Frederick Jackson Turner's famous frontier thesis to how Walt Disney shaped his original Frontierland into something that resembles actual history. Then things get messy. Mark Davis' fingerprints are all over Disney's greatest achievements and in the late-'60s he began designing his theme park masterpiece: Thunder Mesa and the Western River Expedition. And that's when things start to go wrong. But from the wreckage of the project emerged one of Disney's greatest attractions: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - the only ride that can actually be prescribed by a Doctor as a cure for kidney stones. If you love Disney history, theme park design, Imagineering legends, or just want to ride Big Thunder with smarter eyes, hit play. The attraction won't be around for another 20 though, as it is set to close this year to make way for the upcoming Avatar experience. - https://www.micechat.com/430352-disneyland-update-lunar-lights-sweethearts-nite-construction-heights/ Last week also marked the first Sweethearts Nite of the season. This year, the checkin was back in Frontierland at the entrance to Galaxy's Edge where guests could pick up their lanyard, map, and pack of Dove chocolates for the event. Some of the themed photo areas this time were the rooftops of Paris for the Aristocats, the balcony from Aladdin, a Toontown picnic, and the “Kiss the Girl” scene from The Little Mermaid. Some uncommon characters were also around like Oswald the Lucky Rabbit with Ortensia, Princess Kida and Milo Thatch from Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and The Country Bears offering Bear Hugs. The new Celebrate Love Cavalcade, and Once Upon A Dream show were fun additions to the after dark event. - https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/disneyland-after-dark-sweethearts-nite-2026/ https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/disneyland-after-dark-sweethearts-nite-characters/ Downtown Disney is continuing to be a bustling area full of construction. Porto's Bakery & Cafe is coming along as the demolition of the former Earl of Sandwich location is moving along. The old building should be completely cleared soon. Gordon Ramsay visited the resort to check on the progress of Gordon Ramsay at The Carnaby, which will be located upstairs from the new Earl of Sandwich. The sign for this location has been revealed already, with rumors that soft openings could happen in the next couple of months. - https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/portos-bakery-construction-update-downtown-disneyland-resort/ https://www.laughingplace.com/disney-parks/gordan-ramsay-visits-disneyland-resort-the-carnaby/ For our book club read this time, we will be diving into Groundbreaking Magic: A Black Woman's Journey Through the Happiest Place on Earth. Join Erik and Tage this week as they are joined by Michael and Kate as they discuss the opening day attractions they would like to experience, the Disney Parks holiday experiences they would like to recreate at home, the non-Disney books they would like to see adapted into Disney+ series, and which classic imagineers or park visionaries they would like to have dinner with. Support the podcast by going to https://www.thehubcrawl.com/support. Question 1: If you could experience one of the Disneyland opening day attractions — that we no longer have — which would it be? Quick list: (on Main Street) the Horse-Drawn Surrey, the Horse-Drawn Firetruck, Wurlitzer Music Hall, Upjohn Pharmacy, the Maxwell Intimate Apparel Shop; (in Frontierland) the Davy Crockett Museum, Horse Corral, Railroad “Cattle Cars,” Conestoga Wagon, Pack Mules; (in Fantasyland) the Mickey Mouse Club Theatre (technically opened 8/27); (in Tomorrowland) Rocket to the Moon, Circarama, World Beneath Us, Space Station X-1, Tomorrowland Boats, ‘20,000 Leagues' Walk-Through (technically opened 8/5), Aluminum Hall of Fame, Monsanto Hall of Chemistry. Question 2: What is a Disney Parks holiday experience that you would like to recreate at home? Question 3: What non-Disney book or character would you like to see adapted into a Disney+ series? Question 4: Which classic Imagineer or park visionary would you love to have dinner with? Think a multi-course meal where you can pick their brains for hours. Or just hang. And yes, you can pick folks who have passed on. Bonus Question: Let's pretend Disney+ is creating a docuseries focused on the history, design, and future plans for resort hotels, which Disney owned hotel (anywhere) would you want them to feature and why?

Magic Kingdom's Liberty Square sits awkwardly in a corner of the park between Fantasyland and Frontierland. With audience tensions rising within the Hall of Presidents auditorium, it seems like it's only a matter of time before Liberty Square is given a makeover… and by not putting the popularity of the Broadway show “Hamilton” to use, Disney may be throwing away their shot at revitalizing the land. In this episode, Jake and Morgan imagine a Hamilton-infused Liberty Square remix. Listen along and join the Dis-cussion on social media @neverlandnavco

Happy Halloween! On this week's special spooky episode, Jeff welcomes Julia back to the show to discuss a few frightningly fun topics, starting with Jeff's review of Disneyland's new Happiest Haunts Tour ("The Villains' Trail"), and we look at the new features for this year and compare it with tours in years past. Then, we discuss Ray Bradbury and his relationship with both Walt Disney and the Disney Company, including a closer look at The Halloween Tree, his book that inspired the Halloween Tree in Frontierland. We also dive into "Something Wicked This Way Comes," Bradbury's cult-ish film produced by Walt Disney Productions in 1983 and we look at its inspiration, the story of its production, its genre (horror? Dark fantasy?), and its place in horror story culture. Finally, we give a quick review of Tron: Ares, while wishing it was doing better at the box office.
How to Do a Full Day at Magic Kingdom in OrlandoFor many travelers, Magic Kingdom is the heart of Walt Disney World — the park that captures the essence of Disney storytelling and wonder. With iconic attractions, timeless parades, and dazzling nighttime fireworks, it's where fairytales truly come to life.Trying to see and do everything in one day can feel overwhelming, but with a solid plan and a few insider tips, you can experience nearly all of the park's highlights without feeling rushed. Here's our complete guide to doing a full day at Magic Kingdom in OrlandoArrive Early and Plan AheadTo make the most of your visit, arrive before park opening. Give yourself time for parking, security, and transportation to the park entrance via ferry or monorail. If you're staying at a Disney Resort, you'll have access to Early Entry, which allows you to enter select areas 30 minutes before the general public — an excellent advantage for tackling the most popular rides first. Before arriving, download the My Disney Experience app. You'll use it for everything from checking wait times to ordering food, making Genie+ selections, and finding character meet-and-greet schedules.Morning: Tackle the Big AttractionsThe first few hours after opening are the best time to check off the most in-demand attractions, especially before the midday crowds arrive. Begin in Fantasyland and Tomorrowland with:Seven Dwarfs Mine Train – The most popular ride in Magic Kingdom; do this first or reserve a Lightning Lane.Peter Pan's Flight – A whimsical classic that fills up quickly.Space Mountain – A must for thrill-seekers, this indoor coaster is best early in the day.Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin – A fun, interactive game that families love.If you're using Genie+, schedule your first Lightning Lane for Jungle Cruise or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad later in the morning.Late Morning: Adventureland and FrontierlandOnce the early rush fades, head to Adventureland and Frontierland for a mix of action, humor, and nostalgia.Top attractions include:Pirates of the Caribbean – A fan favorite with an immersive atmosphere and cool indoor queue.Jungle Cruise – Famous for its witty skippers and lighthearted storytelling.Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – A high-energy ride through the Old West.Tiana's Bayou Adventure – The newly reimagined log flume experience based on The Princess and the Frog. After these, you'll be ready for a well-deserved lunch break.Lunch and Midday RestFor lunch, Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Café in Frontierland offers quick, customizable Tex-Mex dishes. If you prefer a sit-down meal, The Crystal Palace on Main Street serves a buffet with Winnie the Pooh and friends — great for families and air-conditioned comfort.Use the early afternoon to slow down. Orlando's heat and crowds peak between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., so plan indoor attractions or shows:Haunted Mansion – A spooky but family-friendly favorite. It's a Small World – Classic Disney charm and a great place to rest.Mickey's PhilharMagic – A 3D show that offers both entertainment and a cooldown.Afternoon: Explore and EnjoyBy mid-afternoon, take time to explore smaller attractions or revisit a favorite ride. Grab a refreshing Dole Whip from Aloha Isle or a Mickey pretzel from The Lunching Pad.Keep an eye on the Festival of Fantasy Parade schedule — it's worth seeing at least once, especially for first-time visitors. The best viewing areas are near Liberty Square or Frontierland, where crowds are lighter.Evening: Dinner and FireworksPlan your dinner around 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. so you can enjoy the nighttime entertainment afterward. For quick service, Casey's Corner offers classic hot dogs and a great view of the castle. For a quieter sit-down meal, The Plaza Restaurant provides a relaxed atmosphere and comfort food favorites. After dinner, claim your spot for “Happily Ever After,” the park's signature fireworks and projection show. For the best view, stand in the hub area in front of Cinderella Castle or along Main Street, U.S.A. Arrive at least 30–45 minutes early for the best experience.End of the Day: Last Rides and FarewellWhen the fireworks end, linger a bit. Crowds will surge toward the exit immediately, so this is a perfect time to enjoy one or two final attractions. Rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and Space Mountain often have much shorter waits late at night. Before leaving, take a slow walk down Main Street, U.S.A.. The lights, music, and view of the castle make for a peaceful and memorable ending to your day.Essential Tips for a Perfect Magic Kingdom DayWear comfortable shoes – Expect to walk several miles.Stay hydrated – Bring a refillable bottle; there are plenty of water stations.Use Genie+ wisely – Prioritize high-demand attractions for maximum value.Take breaks – Duck into shows or shops to recharge.Enjoy the atmosphere – The best moments aren't always on rides.A single day at Magic Kingdom can be as magical as an entire vacation if you plan it right. With an early start, a flexible itinerary, and a few well-timed breaks, you can experience the best rides, shows, and dining without feeling rushed.Magic Kingdom remains the most iconic of all Disney parks — and even one full day here is enough to remind us why it's called The Most Magical Place on Earth.

From the birth of the Happy Meal to fry carts in Frontierland, this episode explores how two of the world's biggest brands became the ultimate marketing duo - and what really ended their 10-year deal. Grab your candy corn and hold onto your jack-o-lanterns, because a spooky spirit has possessed the podcast! Welcome to a very special, extra-ghoulish bonus episode of the Dedicated to DLP podcast. The Halloween season has officially descended upon Disneyland Paris, and let's just say things are a little... unhinged around the studio. Our co-host Vanessa has unfortunately fallen victim to a tragic pumpkin-spice-related incident, leaving Beth and Marq to hold down the fort. And if you think you heard some suspicious howling at the top of the show, well... so did Marq. We're blaming it on haunted airwaves. We're sinking our fangs into all the news from the Disney Halloween Festival 2025. We'll give you the full scoop on the incredible, spooky atmosphere that's casting a spell over the park. We're talking about the charmingly eerie daytime decorations and the absolutely breathtaking, ghostly projections that transform Main Street into something truly spine-tingling after dark. It's a whole new level of creepy and captivating. We're also cackling about the incredible new immersive dining experience that has taken over Frontierland. This isn't just a meal; it's a step right into a classic Disney haunting, and the attention to detail is so good it's scary. Of course, no Halloween round-up would be complete without a tour of all the characters, the cavalcade, and the spectacular villainous show that lets the bad guys take over the castle each night. Consider this your one-stop guide to all things macabre and merry. Then, we stir the cauldron and open up a tomb-full of your incredible listener mail! We're answering your burning questions to help plan your magical, and maybe a little mysterious, trips. We tackle the great on-site versus off-site hotel debate for a spectacular birthday trip all the way from Australia. We also help a first-time visitor with her strategy for fireworks, navigating a hotel with a slightly... inconvenient detour, and finding the best superhero encounters for her little ones. We even dive into the best spots in the parks to let kids run wild without a single ride queue in sight. So, whether you're heading to the parks this Halloween or just wishing you were, grab a pumpkin spice latte, check your surroundings for any stray lycanthropes, and join us for a howling good time. It's our most spooktacular episode yet!

http://www.attractionchecklist.com - In July 2025, Tom Sawyer Island in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom closed for good. Let's take one last walk around the Island before the memory fades on this episode of Attraction Checklist. Attraction audio recorded on May 21, 2025. TRANSCRIPT: This episode we're off to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom to take a stroll around Tom Sawyer Island. The Walt Disney World guide map described this attraction saying: Brave this Mark Twain-inspired hideaway. There are no age or height requirements or a thrill level listed for this attraction. Before we board a raft, here are five fast facts about Tom Sawyer Island at Magic Kingdom. 1. Tom Sawyer island opened at Magic Kingdom on May 20, 1973. 2. The Fort on the Island, Fort Langhorn, was originally called Fort Samuel Clemens, but the name was changed in 1996 in a moment of synergy with the Walt Disney Pictures film Tom & Huck. 3. The barn on the island used to have an effect that made it seem like it was on fire. Viewed primarily from the riverboat, this effect was ended in 2005. 4. In August 2024, Disney announced that Tom Sawyer Island would be closing to make way for a new Frontierland expansion themed to the Pixar movie Cars. 5. Tom Sawyer Island official closed on July 7, 2025. Bringing the 52 year life of Tom Sawyer Island to a close. Let's go explore Tom Sawyer Island. Along for the adventure, the Huck to my Tom, is John B. deHaas and after we check out the attraction we'll give you our thoughts on it.
