Welcome to Jake's Happy Nostalgia Show, the podcast where nostalgia comes alive! This week, we're joined by the legendary songwriting duo Michael and Patty Silversher! Known for crafting some of the most iconic and beloved tunes in children's television, the Silvershers have been the musical minds behind countless favorites from Disney and The Jim Henson Company. From writing the unforgettable theme songs for Adventures of the Gummi Bears and TaleSpin to penning songs for Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, DuckTales, and the Winnie the Pooh franchise, their Disney legacy speaks (or sings!) for itself. Michael also wrote and arranged most of the classic Mickey Mouse Splashdance album. With The Jim Henson Company, they brought their talents to projects like Muppet Classic Theater, Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree, Animal Jam, Sid the Science Kid, Dinosaur Train, and Pajanimals, as well as the heartfelt ballad "Together Forever" from The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland. We dive into their creative process, the stories behind your favorite childhood songs, and what it's like to write music that spans generations.

And The Mesozoic Terrestrial Ecosystems Conference is going to Utah in June. One of Dr. Kirkland's talks on dromaeosaurs: Utahraptor and Dromaeosaurs. The Text: This week's text is Tyrannosaur, spanning from pages 288 – 298. Synopsis: Muldoon and Gennaro locate the Big Rex and head out to tranquilizer her. Meanwhile, Lex, Tim and Grant plummet over the waterfall where the Big Rex has been waiting to eat them. The tyrannosaur loses them in the water, but finds the life vest. Meanwhile, Grant snags the kids, resuscitates Lex from drowning and leads them up a path behind the waterfalls to hide from the Tyrannosaur. Behind the falls, Grant finds a secured maintenance facility, golf cart, and juvenile velociraptor, but unfortunately, he gets separated from the kids by a locked door. He tranquilizes the raptor, discovering that it's a male that was bred in the wild. The kids, on the other hand, are locked out and the tyrannosaur bursts through the waterfalls, uses its tongue like an elephant trunk to catch Tim, and is about to eat him, when it falls asleep.  Discussions surround: The Dinosaurs, Timeline, Believe Me! Episode 42 We are thrilled to welcome Dr Scott Sampson to the DtW podcast! Those of you with small children probably know him best as Dr Scott the Paleontologist from Dinosaur Train, but there is so much more to him than time traveling cartoon dinosaurs! In his book, "How to Raise a Wild Child", he explains how he left his dream job in academia and devoted his life to spreading the love of science and nature to the next generation, because unless we become a people who love and understand our world, we're doomed. We get into some of the teaching strategies that he has developed to help all of you parents who suddenly became home-school teachers, as well as practical ways to grow emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. He casts a vision in which humankind rediscovers their love of the natural world, develops technology in tandem with it, and becomes a force for good for the sake of all living things. All that to say, it's no accident that the answers to life, the universe, and everything are contained within episode 42.  Support this podcast on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/DowntheWormholepodcast More information at https://www.downthewormhole.com/ produced by Zack Jacksonmusic by Zack Jackson and Barton Willis    Scientists in Synagogues application due July 23 - https://sinaiandsynapses.org/scientists-in-synagogues/   Show Notes App: iNaturalist, use your phone to figure out the world around you and be in community with scientists and other people in nature. #080 — Caffeine, Alcohol, and Television: What’s True? — Episode 080 Conventional wisdom—and most official recommendations—tell us that we must abstain entirely from coffee and alcohol for the duration of pregnancy to avoid very serious consequences. And once our kids are born, experts urge us to keep our children away from screens to prevent behavior problems and poor academic performance in the future. But what does the data say? Is it really the end of the world to have a cup of coffee in the morning? How about an occasional glass of wine? What is wrong with letting our kiddos watch an episode or two of Dinosaur Train?  When economist Emily Oster got pregnant, she also got curious about the advice she was getting. Some recommendations were based on her age alone, and sometimes she found it difficult to get any answers at all. So, she started digging into the data. Eventually, Emily’s research became Expecting Better, and today, she joins me to discuss her approach to writing for a popular audience and the somewhat unintentional way the book was born. Emily describes how her background as an economist shapes her decision-making and how to go about judging the quality of a particular study. I ask Emily for insight on the data around caffeine, alcohol, and screen time for kids, and she explains why two people can see and understand the same data—yet make different, and equally valid, decisions. Listen in for Emily’s take on making corrections to our thinking based on new evidence and get a sneak peek at what’s covered in her forthcoming book! With so much technology and so many media choices at our fingertips today, its harder than ever to know what we should allow in our homes or not. If you have young kids that you want to protect, the challenge gets even harder!  So where do we begin when it comes to determining good media choices for our kids? In today’s episode, we start to dive into that.  This week’s episode comes from Chelsea! She sent in an audio messaged to ask about media choices. Listen into hear her questions and my response! (And find out how to leave a voicemail question below!) Finding the Right Balance I think this is a hard balance to walk. As Christian parents, we want to be and need to be protective over what our kids are watching, reading, and being exposed to. We want to be protective and help mold and form their young imaginations and questions.  But the other side of that is that we don’t want to be so suffocating with our rules and legalistic that they become overly curious, or we make them too naive, or even rebel in the future.  We want to protect and help guide our kids when they are young so that they are not exposed to things of the world too early. At the time same time, we want to help guide them through tricky waters while they are living under our roof and we can have open and honest conversations with them.  It’s definitely a hard balance to walk and the specific guidelines are going to differ from family to family.  Where our family is at right now So for example, we do allow most Disney movies in our home. We watch them as a family and have the chance to talk about what’s real in those movies, what’s not real, and it’s the perfect time to have discussions over character’s sins or moral issues. It becomes a great time to chat about why a certain character acted the way they did and if that is glorifying to God.  It allows us to explain to the kids that there are different religions and belief systems in the world but only one true God! Interaction with these movies and media allows us to start equipping their young minds.  At the same time, there are a lot of things we say no to. We always pre-screen “kids” movies before we let them watch them, they are not alone to choose things on Netflix without showing us first, and they are never ever allowed to surf on YouTube. On the rare occasion they watch something on YouTube, it’s only a tv show or movie we are familiar with and our watchful eye is on them to make sure they don’t click to something else.  With that said, they don’t watch move popular tv shows. They are allowed to watch many PBS shows (often with the opportunity to share why we believe a different way, such as with the show Dinosaur Train on PBS which is very evolutionary). But they are not allowed to watch most Nickelodeon, Disney, or other kid networks. Of course, this is made easy by the fact that we don’t have cable TV. We only stream off Netflix and Amazon Prime. I think the two exclusions to this are 1) Paw Patrol and 2) Little Einsteins which I believe is owned by Dinsey.  These rules will of course change and flow throughout the years as our children age. But as they grow older, our ideas of pre-screening everything will not change. I want to know what my kids are being exposed to. The same goes for reading material. In short, there is no definitive Biblical answer. We can’t point to one portion of Scripture and say, “see this gives us a list of what movies or TV shows are okay!”  But we can take what Scripture teaches, pull the principles from that, and pray that God would give us the wisdom to decide from family to family.  With that said, there are some incredible Christian tv shows that we use most of the time. Our favorites include:  Theo Owlegories What’s in the Bible And actually, I should mention an online service that we use and love. It’s called JellyTelly and it’s a kind of like a Christian Netflix for kids. It contains those three shows I mentioned plus a ton of other incredible ones! There are actually over 100 shows on there. I don’t have to worry about what my kids are clicing on or when they try out a new show.  Find out more at: https://youngwifesguide.com/jellytelly. It’s just $4.99 a month, so even cheaper than Netflix. Or you can get it for $49.99 for a whole year, which breaks down to two months free.  One last Sidenote: We must remember not to judge others and other families when they make media choices that are different than ours. Some things are plain sin that we must shield our children from, but a lot of other things fall into the gray area that we must decide for our family.  Want to leave a voicemail question? I want to cover YOUR questions and topics here on TTM! So if you have a question, please leave a voice mail (under 90 seconds) and I will try my hardest to answer it on the podcast or find someone more qualified to answer it

We were able to catch up with Scott in Vancouver B.C., where he president and CEO of Science World British Columbia. In this conversation we dug into his insights around how we can create a thriving world as an embedded part of nature. We touch on the subtle but important difference between biophilia and topophilia, the integration of high tech and deep tech, and the nuances of mentoring vs. teaching. We also discuss his new book ‘How to Raise a Wild Child’ and along the way get to learn where Scott would spend one hour if he could travel through time, train or no train. Enjoy.

This Week's Guest is...  ... author- illustrator James Burks. After spending fifteen years working as artist in animation working on such movies as Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Home on the Range, Space Jam, the Iron Giant and the television shows, Wow Wow Wubbzy, Ni-hao Kai-lan, the Dinosaur Train and most recently on Fan Boy and Chum Chum, James is now writing and illustrating his own children's books including Gabby & Gator, Bird & Squirrel on Ice, and Bird & Squirrel on the Run.    James and I talk about   Tacos! His Bird and Squirrel song. Art of visual storytelling. How James got in the biz. His preferred medium. Tips for illustrators. 3 things James would recommend. The worst thing you could do as a storyteller or an illustrator. Note to my podcast listeners When I was listening to Fresh Air on NPR I thought, "Hey! I could do that, but with children's publishing as my focus!" That's how Brain Burps About Books got started. Writing is so solitary. I thought it would be a great way to get to talk to my friends and make new ones, plus I could help others learn. Maybe I'd learn some stuff myself, too. I've had the privilege of talking to the first three National Ambassadors for Young People's Literature, to librarians and New York Time's bestselling authors. I've interviewed to booksellers and publishers, writers, illustrators, app creators, and app distributors, and more! There is always something new on the horizon to learn and to share. So many listeners have asked how to support the show, and actually, now you can. I've installed a donate button to help defray the costs of producing the show. What do you learn or get out of Brain Burps every week? If it's worth donating a dollar, two dollars, five, or whatever you think the show is worth to you, it would help enormously. The show costs $20 a month to keep on the server, and that's only if there are four shorter episodes in a month. That number doesn't include other costs like my time to research and record, post, edit the intros and outros, web hosting, and equipment and software to do all this. I ended up loving podcasting. I love my listeners. My "Burpers!" This is my gig, I know. and like I said, it's an incredible experience for me. But if you've you've been helped, or just love it too, and you're able, here's your opportunity to help defray the costs. No matter what, thank you for being a Burper!
