This week, we're chatting to Lucy Ashe. Lucy trained at the Royal Ballet school, and now works as a teacher in Brooklyn, whilst writing brilliant books. Her debut, 'Clara and Olivia', was shortlisted for the CWA Historical Dagger Award. Her follow up, 'The Sleeping Beauties', was also set in the world of ballet. The new novel is 'The Model Patient'. Set in 1960s London, it explores obsession and betrayal. In the quiet hush of her therapists office, Evelyn Westbrook finds herself revealing secrets she'd prefer to stay hidden. When her sessions with the enigmatic Dr. Daley starts to give more questions than answers, she finds her interest in him turn into an obsession. It was inspired by Lucy's own traumatic relationship with a therapist, and it helped her find some control in that strange situation. We talk about Lucy's writing life, after recently having her first child, and how that's changed how much time she thought she'd have to write. Also, hear how a book deal changes how you write... does it add confidence or pressure? And, how it's a slight diversion from her normal historical fiction book - she's found the psychological thriller in this one.Get a copy of the book at uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineThis week's episode is sponsored by IngramSpark.

rWotD Episode 3140: Paris Opera Ballet Welcome to random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Monday, 8 December 2025, is Paris Opera Ballet. The Paris Opera Ballet (French: Ballet de l'Opéra national de Paris) is a French ballet company that is an integral part of the Paris Opera. It is the oldest national ballet company, and many European and international ballet companies can trace their origins to it. It is still regarded as one of the most prominent ballet companies in the world, together with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and the Royal Ballet in London.Since December 2022, the company has been under the direction of José Martínez, the director of dance. The ballet company consists of 154 dancers, among them 17 Danseurs Étoiles. The principal dancers give 180 dance performances each year, primarily at the Palais Garnier.Just as prestigious as the Paris Opera Ballet is its dance school, the Paris Opera Ballet School (French: École de danse de l'Opéra national de Paris), considered to be one of the world's best dance schools. Its former pupils have won a record of 20 Benois de la Danse awards. The school celebrated its tercentennial in 2013.The competition for admission to both institutions is extremely fierce. For a dancer to enter the Paris Opera Ballet, it is almost compulsory to be admitted to the Paris Opera Ballet School, to pass the annual competitive examinations in May, and to attend at least the final two classes. 95 percent of the admitted dancers in the Paris Opera Ballet are French. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:03 UTC on Monday, 8 December 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Paris Opera Ballet on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Kimberly.

Interview Date: March 23rd, 2025Episode Summary:This episode spotlights Robert Garland, Artistic Director of Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH)—former principal dancer, DTH's first resident choreographer, and a Juilliard BFA graduate. Beyond the concert stage, Garland's work spans New York City Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Oakland Ballet, and commercial projects from Sesame Street to Nike and the NAACP Image Awards.Garland traces DTH's roots to Arthur Mitchell's 1969 vision and explains how Mitchell's lecture-demonstration model built audiences and access. He folds in a vivid business/history lesson on George Balanchine—from the Ballets Russes and Coco Chanel's short ballet skirt to the Harlem Renaissance's jazz influence that helped shape neoclassicism and, crucially, how smart repertoire and audience-building choices drove growth. On the business side, Garland stresses that relationships power opportunities and fundraising—“contacts become contracts”—and lifts the curtain on the theater's “cottage industry” (development, marketing, production, stage management). For dancers, he offers pragmatic guidance: cultivate musicianship and form, be multifaceted (social, lighting, admin), and understand cycles of work—pace your week so you peak for shows. He unpacks today's video-first auditions, urging care with presentation, while affirming many legitimate pathways (college, company route, or self-directed study).Show notes:(0:00) – Robert Garland introduction & career highlights(09:41) – Dance Theatre of Harlem origin & mission(14:55) – Juilliard audition story and scholarship journey(16:56) – Balanchine, Coco Chanel, and neoclassicism explained(25:51) – “Contacts = Contracts”: relationships fuel opportunities(33:16) – Careers beyond stage: marketing, production, education(38:27) – Arts education builds empathy and compassion(42:34) – Audition process and rise of video submissions(51:41) – Transition into commercial/TV work with hip-hop artists(1:12:11) – From dancer to choreographer to creative leadershipBiography:Artistic Director Robert Garland was a member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company from 1985-1998, achieving the rank of principal dancer. After creating a work for the DTH School Ensemble, Arthur Mitchell invited Mr. Garland to create a work for The Dance Theatre of Harlem Company and appointed him the organization's first Resident Choreographer. Before becoming DTH Artistic Director, he was Director of the Dance Theatre of Harlem school. In 2023, Mr. Garland was appointed the Artistic Director of Dance Theatre of Harlem. His works for the company include Higher Ground, New Bach, Return, Nyman String Quartet No. 2, and The Cookout among others, many are in his signature postmodern-urban-neo-classical style.  In addition to choreographing several ballets for DTH, Mr. Garland has also created works for New York City Ballet, Britain's Royal Ballet, Oakland Ballet and many others.  His commercial work has included music videos, commercials and short films, including the children's television show “Sesame Street”, a Nike commercial featuring New York Yankee Derek Jeter, the NAACP Image Awards, a short film for designer Donna Karan, and the “Charmin Cha-Cha” for Proctor and Gamble. Kim took an unusual route into choreography – he initially trained in film, before finding that dance was the perfect medium for his narrative impulse. His recent rich, elegant ballets draw on Hans Christian Andersen and timeless Greek myths.Kim Brandstrup studied film at the University of Copenhagen and choreography at London School of Contemporary Dance. He founded his dance company Arc in 1985, forging a narrative style that owes more to his early cinematic training than to classical story ballet or contemporary dance. He highlights that although isometric training has a big place in the training of the foot and ankle, its not the only tool in the toolbox. He dives into the different testing protocols which target the various different areas of the foot based on its function. Romain goes into detail on soleus, tibialis anterior and tibialis posterior testing, citing his work with the Royal Ballet as an example of how these protocols can improve an organisations testing battery. Main talking points: Intrinsic muscles are often overemphasized in training Extrinsic muscles play a larger role in force production Dynamic contractions, not just isometrics are necessary for building calf strength Isometric training alone is insufficient for optimal performance The foot and ankle are frequently underloaded in training regimens How to assess the soleus, tibialis anterior and tibialis posterior

He has created more than 20 new works at Covent Garden in that time, including Chroma, set to music by Joby Talbot and The White Stripes, and Woolf Works, a full-length ballet based on the life and writings of Virginia Woolf. More recently, McGregor brought the post-apocalyptic vision of Margaret Atwood to the stage in his ballet MaddAddam, based on the writer's acclaimed trilogy of novels. He has worked as a movement director on films including Harry Potter Goblet Of Fire and Mary Queen Of Scots, collaborated with bands including Radiohead and Chemical Brothers, and choreographed the virtual concert, ABBA Voyage. In October 2025, Somerset House in London will mount a landmark exhibition dedicated to McGregor's trailblazing collaborations that have radically defined how we think about performance, movement, and the body. Having won numerous awards, including two Oliviers, Sir Wayne McGregor was knighted in 2024.Wayne McGregor talks to John Wilson about his childhood in Stockport, where he took dance classes and was inspired by John Travolta's moves in Saturday Night Fever. He recalls the house and techno music of the late 80s when he was a student, and how the freedom of expression he felt on nightclub dance-floors informed his style of choreography. Whilst living in New York after leaving university, Wayne came across an open-air performance by the legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham, whose company was dancing to live music conducted by the avant-garde composer John Cage. It was a chance encounter that had a profound impact on McGregor. He also discusses how science and technology has been a major thematic influence on much of his work in recent years, and how AI has been used to create new works through analysis of physical movement and artistic expression.Producer Edwina Pitman
