Sepia Jewel was no stranger to the stage before her burlesque life! Singing in an all female rap group signed onto Epic Records and designing costumes while dancing for the San Diego Ebony Elite's are just a few items on her resumé (include mother, daughter, wife, and friend). It wasn't until 2016, Ms. Jewel was watching the movie Burlesque that she realized she needed to get back to the stage. At 55 years old, she trained under Coco L'Amour with the Pixie Stixx and from there, the force she possesses couldn't be stopped. Quickly becoming an award winning international showgirl, she soon realized the rhinestone life was aligned with the art therapy she was looking for. 9 years later, Sepia Jewel shows us what it means to be a Black burlesque performer and queen: no age, no location, no *nothing* can stop you.

Let's Go Again: A Philosophical and Practical Guide for Indie Creatives
You're back. I'm back.GOTTA ASK YOU THIS:Instead of giving up on getting an audience to see your art because you'd rather scoop your cat's litter box for all of eternity than research SEO keywords for another second, What if “making content” felt more like divulging secrets to your best friend? What if content marketing was as easy for you as pickleball is for Serena? What if your content (non-derogatory) loaded people onto a proverbial express train to your work and created a scene even Warhol would envy?If making content felt fun, would you finally put yourself out there with your full chest? In today's episode, I'm going to give you a total reframe on content. And before I lose you, here's what this episode is NOT:* It's not about lack mindset!* It's not about believing in yourself!* It's not about changing your self-perception!* It's not about your fear of being seen!Don't get me wrong. I love to talk about those things, too. But that's not this episode.Today, I'm sharing one crucial shift in the actual act of making content that will make you feel like a celebrity multi-millionaire infused with their daily vitamin IV drip. In other words: invigorated.IN TODAY'S EPISODE, we'll answer these questions:* What qualifies as content and what qualifies as art?* What is the function of content for indie artists?* What are the different quality levels of content that artists should focus on?* How do you make boring “content marketing” into something more dynamic and easier to produce?* What are some examples of artists who are using this strategy and how does it work across industries?* Can content be part of your body of work without selling out or copying everyone else?* Will your art suffer if you focus on content?AND DON'T MISS:More Lore Less Bore, from the Twelfth House+ Podcast (A good place to start if you've never written a manifesto.)Vulfpeck's website. One of the most breathtaking finches to keep in an aviary in Australia is the exquisite Purple Grenadier Finch (Uraeginthus ianthinogaster). Native to Africa, this stunning bird was last officially imported into Australia in the mid-1940s. While it has specific care requirements, adapting your aviary to meet its needs will be well worth the effort. A male Purple Grenadier basking in the sunlight is a truly spectacular sight, making this finch a rewarding choice for any dedicated bird enthusiast.Birdman Dad You Tube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPY7Oh4zOdznC2SRV4esVWwInstagram Birdman_dadFacebook https://www.facebook.com/p/Birdman-Dad-100068951525496/https://www.facebook.com/groups/1892441777643619/

Published just two days ago, Adam Ross' second novel, Playworld — some dozen-plus years in the making — is one of the best books I've read in the last five years. I'm not alone! Sources no less venerable than The New York Times, the LA Times, the Boston Globe, the Wall Street Journal, are all lining up to sing its praises. “Dazzling and endearing,” writes Vogue. The Washington Post croons: “The book is quote so good, it will give readers hope for the year ahead.” Everyone is in love with this novel. Here's how it opens:“In the fall of 1980, when I was fourteen, a friend of my parents named Naomi Shah fell in love with me. She was thirty-six, a mother of two, and married to a wealthy man. Like so many things that happened to me that year, it didn't seem strange at the time.”Set in New York, Ross's bildungsroman (a pointy-headed word for “coming of age story”) follows a year in the unusual life of Griffin Hurt — a child actor, prep school 8th grader, aspiring wrestler and potential love interest of one Naomi Shah. What sets it apart from similarly ambitious romps, like Cloud Cuckoo Land, or A Gentleman in Moscow? The sentences are better dancers, for one. And the world building is so delightfully specific. Picture a line of fourteen-year-old boys, silently lining up for a wrestling meet's official weigh-in, some “hairy as fathers.” A minor character's teeth are said to be “fantastic, separate unto him, like furniture in his mouth.”The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. To support my writing, original music and this podcast, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Thank you.But great language and an evocative setting — it's not enough that a book entertain, or even wow. What sets Playworld apart is this: the pages are suffused with love, the great and complicated and imperfect love between people who themselves are, in spite of their shortcomings, vanities, or outright crimes, worthy of it.In this freewheeling conversation Adam and I discuss his approach to writing the novel, which I frame in the architect vs gardener approach. We talk about parenting in the 1980s versus now, and how Adam was careful not to allow Playworld to become the nostalgic celebration of yesteryear it might have otherwise been. We discussed one of the the themes: the tension many of us feel between filial loyalty and personal desire. And finally I asked him to read an excerpt from the book's middle, one that gets at the complicated relationship between two of the story's principle characters — Griffin and his dad — and also what makes Griffin's particular feelings of deficit so painfully relatable.Somewhere in there, I, fumbling around for a question that might get under some of the dazzling technique, the funny flawed characters, the dramatic surprises, finally asked him what personal quest — if any — he was on in writing Playworld.“I wanted to write something beautiful,” he said.I hope you enjoy this one — the book, and this conversation — as much as I did. ~korby Get full access to The Morse Code at korby.substack.com/subscribe

Breathe in deeply through your nose... What can you smell right now? Can you identify it? How does it make you feel? Is it fresh, bright, pleasant? Nostalgic? Disgusting? How often do think about smell? If you only tend to notice when it's something particularly lovely - your favourite dish being cooked, a preferred flower - or horrid (let's not go there); you're not alone. As this week's guest Susan Irvine explains, a couple of thousand years' of western philosophy has conditioned us to prioritise sight and sound, relegating smell to the senses' lower division. Why? Well, short of holding your nose (spoiler alert, there's some of that in this podcast!) smell isn't something we can generally choose to take in or shut out; it doesn't invite us to apply our discernment. But while the art and design worlds have long overlooked scent, that's changing. Agenda-setting creatives are using it in their storytelling - and we're not talking about perfume campaigns.Welcome to the mind-blowing world of smell as material. We'll leave it to Susan to explain.Susan Irvine is a writer of excellent books including novels, short stories and non fiction. A former Vogue beauty editor, she's a current Visiting Lecturer at London's Royal College of Art, where she teaches a course on using 'smell as material' based in the Fashion Programme. Today I talked to Chikodili Emelumadu about Dazzling (Harry N. Abrams, 2023). Treasure and Ozoemena are young Nigerian girls forced to deal with spirits after losing their fathers. Treasure is forced to beg in the marketplace as her mother lies bedridden and depressed, and a wicked spirit finds her there and tries to make her his wife. He promises to bring her father back to life if she helps him by finding other girls for his friends. Ozoemena's father has disappeared, leaving the family with questions and responsibilities. She learns from her grandmother that she is descended from a wild, ancient beast, the Leopard from an Igbo legend, which gives her terrible dreams and sometimes takes over her body. Touching on Igbo mythology and African folklore, Emelumadu's dual-voiced stories focus on family, traditions, growing up, and the forces that conspire to prevent people from overcoming their grief. Chikodili Emelumadu was born in Worksop, Nottinghamshire and raised in Awka, Nigeria. Her work has been shortlisted for the Shirley Jackson Awards (2015), the Caine Prize for African Literature (2017 & 2020) and has won a Nommo award (2020 & 2024). In 2019, she emerged winner of the inaugural Curtis Brown First Novel prize for her debut novel, Dazzling. Her short fiction is available in many magazines and anthologies such as Isolation: The Horror Anthology (2022), Screams from the Dark (2022), Experimental Writing: A Writer's Guide and Anthology (2024) and as part of the Royal Literary Fund's Writer's Mosaic. I am so excited to say that my guest on the GWA Podcast is one of the most trailblazing artists and poets in the world right now, Cecilia Vicuna. Born in 1948 in Chile, and based between Santiago and New York, Vicuna is hailed for her works that are as ephemeral as they are permanent, colossal as they are minute, fragile as they are strong, that bring together sound, weaving, language, and community. Educated in Santiago in the 1960s, life took Vicuna to London to study at the Slade School of Art on a scholarship in the 1970s, but because of the Pinochet regime that began in 1973, she was forced to live in exile. Soon she went to Bogota, Colombia, before moving to New York City, where she has remained ever since, in the same loft and tending to the same community garden. Since Vicuna was a teen, she has focussed on a political orientation for her art, as she has said, because she “understood that the life of this planet was endangered”. Through artforms she calls “arte precario” – precious art – because it disappears and is vulnerable, Vicuna has held up a poignant mirror to our world through her installations that meld twigs, bamboo, stones, and shredded textiles. While they show us its beauty, they also convey its vulnerability: warning us about what will happen if we don't wake up in time to protect our ecosystems… At the heart of her art is language – specifically the quipu, which means knots in Quecha, a system of encoding information from the Andes – that conveys as much information as the alphabet – which was used for 5000 years, before being wiped out during colonisation… As well as the importance of togetherness. Because, in a world as destructive as ours we need more than ever to unite, to rebuild the planet for our future descendents, as she says, “not only for the survival of our species, but because it is joyful, fun, beautiful and delightful.” This November, I am excited to say that a new exhibition of Vicuna's work will open at Lehmann Maupin Gallery in NYC, featuring paintings that she has re-rendered from the 1970s, while on a trip to Bogota and Rio. Dazzling in hues of pinks and yellows, they explore the Yoruba Mythology that represents human or divine characteristics and concepts of nature, and I can't wait to find out more. https://www.lehmannmaupin.com/exhibitions –– THIS EPISODE IS GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE LEVETT COLLECTION: https://www.famm.com/en/ https://www.instagram.com/famm_mougins // https://www.merrellpublishers.com/9781858947037 Follow us: Katy Hessel: @thegreatwomenartists / @katy.hessel Sound editing by Lauren Armstrong Carter Music by Ben Wetherfield
