Hungarian Esther Horvath is a multi-award winning polar photographer whose work focuses on climate research in the polar regions. By documenting the work and life of scientists who deliver important data, Esther hopes to help make a difference in how people understand what actually is occurring, and her collaborations with scientists help raise public awareness about these increasingly fragile environments. Esther was born in 1979 in Sopron, Hungary. Esther grew up behind the Iron Curtain and even though she lived only a few kilometers from the Austrian border she was ten years old before the ‘curtain' came down and she was able to explore the Austrian mountains where the Alps start, discovering a world that held a fascination which would become a life-long passion for her as an explorer.  Despite a childhood interest in art and photography Esther chose to study Economics at West Hungarian University for her Masters Degree. Upon graduating she worked in the private sector in Vienna  and at 25 she owned her first camera which would prove to be life-changing. With a growing passion for photography she decided to go to New York to study Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at International Center of Photography, (ICP). After finishing ICP, she received an assignment from Audubon magazine, to the Arctic Ocean, which was the next most important milestone in her life. Today she documented 25 scientific expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica. From 2019 – 2020, Esther spent almost four months on board the Polarstern icebreaker during polar nights in extreme conditions, documenting the MOSAiC expedition in the Central Arctic Ocean, the largest ever Arctic Ocean science expedition.  In 2022 she was the official photographer of the Endurance22 expedition, searching and finding Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship the Endurance. Esther won the first prize in World Press Photo Award, Environmental single category in 2020. In 2022, she received the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in New York for her work in raising awareness about conservation, environmental justice and climate change. Esther is a contributing photographer and explorer for National Geographic Explorer, and a Nikon Ambassador and photographer for the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. In this conversation, Ami attributes her curiosity as a child to getting her out in the world as a photographer. She tells Justin about her early experience in journalism where she had to navigate a male dominated industry that couldn't see her in the field. Overcoming that, she learned the importance of spending time in the communities she photographed, not just parachuting in and out. Joe McNally has been writing a book for the last two years. He's been thinking about it for the last five. And living it for the last 40, as an internationally acclaimed photographer whose award-winning work has appeared in numerous magazines, including National Geographic, Time, LIFE, Sports Illustrated, and more. In The Real Deal: Field Notes from the Life of a Working Photographer, McNally, a Nikon Ambassador, tells you how it all started in 1976 as a Daily News copyboy (“the wretched dog of the newsroom”), and candidly shares stories, lessons, and insights he has collected along the way. The Real Deal is not a dedicated how-to book about “where to put the light,” though there is instructional information to be gleaned here. Instead, it's simply a collection of candid “field notes”—some short, some quite long—gathered over time that, together, become an intimate look behind the lens at a photographer who has pretty much seen and done it all. Charmi Patel Pena is a world renowned wedding and portrait photographer specializing in multicultural and specifically Indian weddings living in New Jersey. Her work is vivid, bold, and compositionally dynamic but alongside being a Nikon Ambassador, educator, and photographer she is also a mom and wife struggling to juggle the pressures of living in both worlds. This episode is all about the lessons she has learned after a year dealing with the Covid-19 Pandemic as a mom and business owner and how setting boundaries around her professional life is letting her be more present at home and more creative at work. It's a huge honor to have candid conversations like this with photographer I so respect but the ultimate goal of this podcast is to educate and Charmi is an absolute class act at giving us all nuggets of wisdom she's picked up on how important it can be to not simply be an artist, but to respect your art and photography enough to put parameters around it. I think you'll enjoy the conversation and as always I'd love to hear your thoughts over on instagram @mileswittboyer or in my inbox miles@mileswittboyer.com or check in at www.mileswittboyer.com Follow Charmi Patel Pena at @charmipenya on instagram or at her website https://www.charmipena.com

Let's start here... Cliff Mautner's career in photography spans 38 years. Think about that for a minute... 38 years ago Nikon released the world's first SLR with Matrix Metering, the Nikon FA, and the world's first camera with a 1/250 sec. flash sync speed, the FE2. Man, we've come a long way, and Cliff has been there for all of it. Cliff's career has included multiple genres. After 15 years and 6000 assignments as a photojournalist with the Philadelphia Inquirer, as well as shooting for an eclectic array of commercial clients ranging from Comcast to Subaru, Cliff launched his wedding photography career. After about 1100 weddings or so, he still brings the same passion and intensity with him to each event with an emphasis on creating authentic moments in some of the most difficult light imaginable. His ability to blend his lifetime of experience in photojournalism and commercial photography with his wedding photography is amazing. Browsing through his portfolio quickly reveals a journalistic approach to capturing his client's most important day. Experience like Cliff's, and more importantly talent like Cliff's, comes with recognition. Cliff is a very proud Nikon Ambassador to the United States, and an Ambassador for Light & Motion. He was named one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world by American PHOTO magazine, and has received the Nikon WPPI Photographer of the Year award. He has also has been honored with the International Photographic Council Leadership medal at the United Nations, presented with the WPPI Lifetime Achievement Award, and is a two time WPPI Grand Award winner for photojournalism.  Our Special Guest: Nikon Ambassador and National Geographic Magazine photographer, Ami Vitale has traveled to more than 100 countries, bearing witness not only to violence and conflict, but also to surreal beauty and the enduring power of the human spirit. Throughout the years, Ami has lived in mud huts and war zones, contracted malaria, and donned a panda suit— keeping true to her belief in the importance of “living the story.”  In 2009, after shooting a powerful story on the transport and release of one the world's last northern white rhinos, Ami shifted her focus to today's most compelling wildlife and environmental stories.  In Style Magazine named Ami one of fifty Badass Women, a series celebrating women who show up, speak up and get things done. She appeared alongside a group of incredible women including Jane Goodall, Christiane Amanpour and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She has been named Magazine photographer of the year in the International Photographer of the Year prize, received the Daniel Pearl Award for Outstanding Reporting and named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association, among others. She is a six-time recipient of World Press Photos, including 1st Prize for her 2018 National Geographic magazine story about a community in Kenya protecting elephants. She recently published a best-selling book, Panda Love, on the secret lives of pandas. Vitale was the subject of the Mission Cover Shot series on the National Geographic Channel as well as another documentary series featuring Madagascar (Over the Islands of Africa).  She lectures for the National Geographic LIVE series, and she frequently gives workshops throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Her photographs have been commissioned by nearly every international publication and exhibited around the world in museums and galleries.  She is a founding member of Ripple Effect Images an organization of renowned female scientists, writers, photographers and filmmakers  working together to create powerful and persuasive stories that shed light on the hardships women in developing countries face and the programs that can help them. It's the return of Moose Peterson! The first time Moose Peterson was on the show I was pretty nervous. Usually I am trying to calm guests that are nervous about being on a show, but this was different. Moose is a legend in every sense of the word. He's a Nikon Ambassador, the recipient of the John Muir Conservation Award, a Research Associate with the Endangered Species Recovery Program, and that's just a partial list. Luckily, my nervousness faded quickly. Moose is such a down-to-earth guy that I was feeling great by the time I hit record. Shortly after that first show, I was at PhotoshopWorld in Las Vegas and saw Moose at a speakers booth. I decided to say hi in person, but I know that sometimes, at shows like that, speakers of Moose's caliber can be very busy. I was prepared for him to either not remember me, or be too rushed to chat for any length of time, but neither was an issue. Moose remembered me, and we had a great chat about the old warbirds - planes like my Dad flew, like a P40 or a P51D. I grew up with my Dad telling me stories about these classic aircraft. That conversation is part of the reason I have wanted to have Moose back on the show. He's mostly known for his wildlife, landscape, and nature photography, but Moose is one of the most amazing aviation photographers I have seen. I have had aviation photography on the show before. My friend Scott Dworkin was on for the show "Top Gun Photo Tips", but Moose photographs a totally different kind of aircraft, classic warbirds. He was the creative producer/photographer of his acclaimed film: Warbirds and The Men Who Flew Them, and his images take you back in time. His use of light in this genre is so special. As an educator he shares his knowledge through his writing, being published in over 143 magazines worldwide, and having authored 29 books. He also lectures across the country to thousands of photographers every year. His current education project is the Moose Peterson Aviation Seminar, and as usual Moose is living on the edge of technology. He will be teaching this seminar both to a live in-person audience, and streaming the seminar at the same time! This seminar is happening just a few days after this show goes live, on July 31, 2021, so act quickly if you're interested in attending.
