Mrinalini Sinha and Manu Goswami's Political Imaginaries in Twentieth-Century India (Bloomsbury, 2022) reconsiders India's 20th century though a specific focus on the concepts, conjunctures and currency of its distinct political imaginaries. Spanning the divide between independence and partition, it highlights recent historical debates that have sought to move away from a nation-centred mode of political history to a broader history of politics that considers the complex contexts within which different political imaginaries emerged in 20th century India. Representing the first attempt to grasp the shifting modes and meanings of the 'political' in India, this book explores forms of mass protest, radical women's politics, civil rights, democracy, national wealth and mobilization against the indentured-labor system, amongst other themes. In linking 'the political' to shifts in historical temporality, Political Imaginaries in 20th century India extends beyond the interdisciplinary arena of South Asian studies to cognate late colonial and post-colonial formations in the twentieth century and contribute to the 'political turn' in scholarship. “Leadership is actually the first few followers, not the crazy first person to stand up on stage.” - Anna McAfeeIn May 2017, Anna McAfee put up a simple post on LinkedIn to see if anyone living in her hometown of Coffs Coast, Australia wanted to get together. She had just returned after years of living abroad and wanted to “get to know the people behind the profiles” in her area. Anna included the hashtag #LinkedInLocal. Fifteen people made it out to the first Coffs Coast event, but the online response was what would change Anna’s life. Three strangers—Alexandra Galviz in London, Manu Goswami in NYC, and Erik Eklund in Brussels—raised their hand to also host a #LinkedInLocal in their city. No one could predict what happened next.Host requests started pouring in from around the world. The founding team was soon hosting after-hours trainings six nights a week to help new cities ramp up. For two years, Anna and her co-creators led, mentored, and managed the #LinkedInLocal global community. At its height, #LinkedInLocal had more than 1,000 hosts and had rallied over 300,000 humans, in 650+ cities across 92 countries. Anna & co. fostered this community without formal support from LinkedIn. She walked a fine line between an unexpected, organic community and the priorities of the platform. In 2019, Anna stepped away and she recently co-authored a book about her experience: How a Hashtag Changed the World. We talked with her about creating a host community and the friction that can appear when an organic community erupts on a major platform.Highlights, inspiration, & key learnings:Anna defines personal why. Searching for belonging in her local community, Anna used the tool she knew best--LinkedIn.Identify the “who” of #LinkedInLocal. The power of a network of hyper-local communities.Balancing inclusion and exclusion. #LinkedInLocal’s first core value: diversity.Cultivating your identity. Building an organic community within the guidelines of a major brand.Support leaders. Anna played the role of connector--making connections within the host communities, helping hosts help themself.

Today's Friday Young Entrepreneur Spotlight is on Manu Goswami AKA... Swish. Swish is a Canadian young entrepreneur who has turned a non-profit he started in High School into a life-long learning experience of entrepreneurialism. Manu (better known as "Swish") is an inspiring young man, who I knew I wanted to interview as soon as I heard his story. He's a 19 yr old student at the University of Toronto, who ALSO happens to be an award-winning serial tech entrepreneur, a UN Youth Ambassador, an early stage tech investor, and TEDx speaker, JUST to name a few. I wondered, how can someone have accomplished so much at such a young age? How did he know this was even possible? What inspires him? “In no other time in history has it been easier to start a business." In today's interview I find out the core set of beliefs that Swish embodies on a daily basis to continually go after people, projects, and experiences that others would avoid for fear of failure. We also learn who Swish considers to be his biggest mentors, and what is next on the horizon for this 19-yr-old college student. You'll be shocked to hear what he's lined up. Manu is an embodiment of what it means to take bold action. Never held back by age or or location or any other "limitations" that people often use as excuses to keep them from their goals, Manu proves time and time again that anything is possible when you get creative, get persistent, and take bold action. “You don't go to a TEDx talk to learn about things as much as to get inspired to go DO Things." FOLLOW MANU: Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: What beliefs did Manu have to have to accomplish all that he has at such a young age? Who were Manu's mentors and how have they impacted his life and career? What's the one skill that Gary V. has nailed, which Manu is actively trying to learn right now. Manu's tips for connecting with influencers (who may appear to be inaccessible). The #1 skill that has led him to speak at TEDx, and connect with people like Gary V. (hint: it's probably not what you think). The #1 thing you should know if you want to give a TEDx talk. Why the Mentorship Movement is such a positive thing for today's CEOs. How you can leverage LinkedIn to spread your message. Why he believes anyone can become an advocate for a cause. The true reason a lot of people initially get into non-profit and advocacy work, and why they won't admit it. Why he thinks boot strapping trumps getting investors.
