Join me and my guest Josh Perry, 5x Brain Tumor Survivor & Former Professional Athlete in a conversation about how to upgrade your reality at every level despite horrendous setbacks and failures. Whether it's a cancer diagnosis or facing anxiety this episode is for you!Josh Perry was born and raised in Cape Cod, MA. His father bought him his first BMX bike when he was just a kid and it almost immediately consumed his life. Josh worked tirelessly at perfecting his craft while his mother drove him all over the country for camps, sessions and competitions. At 17 years old Josh was given an opportunity to train with the best of the best, and though it was thousands of miles from home and he had not yet graduated high school, he didn't think twice and moved to Greenville, NC. Josh moved up to the professional level of competition quickly and was riding Dew Tours, X-Games and competing internationally at the highest possible level. Josh felt as if everything he had been working for his entire life, and everything he had dreamed about was playing out in front of his eyes. He was only 21 years old and felt like he had everything. But, after a nasty crash, his life was threatened. Josh had hit his head and went to a local urgent care to make sure something more serious wasn't happening. He had no damage from the crash, but there was a brain tumor taking up the left half of his brain.Immediate surgical removal was necessary. Josh came out okay and defied all odds by getting back on his bike only five weeks later. That was in 2010. Now, almost a decade later Josh's life has shifted in some wonderful and very unexpected ways. After two more brain tumor diagnosis, he began researching health and nutrition. He was determined to prioritize his health and take the longevity of his life and the vitality of his brain into his own hands. As he progressed, he became passionate about helping others optimize their health and performance in all areas of life including career, relationships, and physical health. As the passion to support others grew, and after a third brain tumor diagnosis, Josh got really clear on his higher purpose in life and left BMX competition to start his business speaking around the world and coaching entrepreneurs, athletes, executives, and organizations. Josh became certified through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition as a health coach, became certified through Ketogenic.com as a Keto Specialist, has become well versed in Neuro Linguistic Programming, read countless research articles, stacks of books and communicated with every expert he could. On August 26th, 20201, Josh went into awake craniotomy surgery to remove yet another tumor that had grown and was causing seizures. Thanks to Dr. Q at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL, and awake craniotomy, Dr.Q was able to remove the new tumor and ALL the other tumors resulting in Josh being tumor FREE for the first time in 12 years. All of Josh's research led him to cultivating a life where consciousness, love, health and happiness are his first priority. He takes full responsibility for his mental and physical state of being and he feels like a healthier, happier and more productive individual because he prioritizes his brain health. Josh's goal is to share knowledge that he has gained with anyone who is ready to CHANGE! He wants the world to know how good they can feel by prioritizing their well being and making simple changes. He will do this continuously and tirelessly through supporting others to become empowered to consciously design their lives by optimizing their health and performance as well as public speaking, his podcast, and any content he creates. Josh's goal in life is to impact the world the most positive way and leave it better, stronger and healthier than when he came into it. Today, Josh has become an optimization strategist - helping people optimize their mindset, health and performance, an international speaker, Host of The Grey Matters Podcast, and published author sharing how chasing his dream saved his life, showed him the courage, strength and resilience we all possess when we tap into our true SELF, and how BMX led him to his true purpose in life which is to serve others in a way that gets YOU to be unstuck in your life, overcome your circumstances, and become empowered to create your IDEAL life.As a multiple brain tumor survivor and former professional athlete, Josh is a living example of what optimizing one's mindset can do in progressing to the next level in one's life whether it be their career, physical health, relationships, or education and my clients experience this for themselves, too.Josh has devoted his life to sharing his belief that we are all capable of changing aspects of ourselves and our lives, despite any circumstance we find ourselves in, to live the most ideal life we envision for ourselves and helping people build and implement strategies to do so.Connect w/ me on Social Media and TELL ME YOU LISTEN TO THE PODCAST!- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/- LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/- Twitter: https://twitter.com/markymetry- Email: markmetry722@gmail.comConnect w/ Josh:- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshperrybmx/- Website: https://www.joshperrybmx.comLYRICSJosh Perry & Mark Metrywe was told, when we was oldon entry when bornwe would never be nothin'now we uplevel to somethin'but now we gold, and on this roadof untold. successwhat a controlled messbut we survived, with da brain flow fear is just a thoughtbut I thought, I arrived thoughand you thought you arrived tooand when you ride, on that bike, that BMX life-had to whip out that gamma knifescrew you cancer get out my lifeI wish we met sooner Josh, unlike that brain tumor, brain washchasing time, like it's my watchbut I don't wanna watchI wanna put my mind away I know for a little bit it's okaybut don't be outstep by step, I'm breakin' it down, Josh's coaching helps, you not break down,he helped me with my mental healthnow I feel like I gotta gift tooto give back to the world, it's bigger than me n youbut I see it, in both me n you no it's not, it's not just about the mindset, but my guy the best, he got da hind sightwhen you pressedyou can go to Josh Perry to help you nonethelessplot out 7 seven moves ahead like chesspick up the pen and pad and get it off your chestnow open that mindwe got Josh on as a guestand what you'll findis a mind well designednow open those eyesthis the mark Metry showwithout further adieu and let's go

Sponsored by Restream.io (Livestream anywhere) - https://restream.io/join/XK9rvJosh Perry was born and raised on Cape Cod, MA, where he developed his passion for BMX bike riding. Josh moved to Greenville, NC when he was 17 to pursue a career as a pro-BMX athlete and to ride with the best riders in the world, including Dave Mirra. In 2009, Josh won his first pro contest as well as the best trick contest, winning him a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle. Following the big win, Josh made his first X-Games appearance and continued competing in the Dew Action Sports Tour (2007-2013).In March of 2010, a hard crash on his bike led Josh to the hospital in fear of a head traumatic brain injury (TBI). After almost a year of migraines, bouts of temporary blindness, and being repeatedly told that nothing was wrong, an MRI to rule out a concussion revealed a mass taking up the entirety of the left side of his brain. At the young age of 21, Josh faced mortality. In April of 2010, Josh underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor taking up the entire left side of his brain. This was a major turning point in his life putting him on track to learning about nutrition and taking better care of his body. In November of 2012, Josh had Gamma Knife Radiation treatment to treat two new tumors. This was another eye-opener for Josh and his health, which led him to research holistic health and nutrition even deeper. With his experiences with brain tumors and injuries, Josh became very passionate about learning about food and the correlation to our health and wellbeing, as well as sharing information with others in hopes of helping them become well. In February of 2014, Josh enrolled in the world's largest nutrition program, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. In February of 2015, Josh completed the program to earn a certification as a Holistic Health Coach to further his efforts in sharing information with others and helping them achieve their goals with their health and wellbeing. In April of 2015, Josh launched www.DailyBrainstorms.com to share his story, and passion with the world and in October of 2016, Josh founded the Josh Perry Foundation as his way to give back to the world.Josh placed 10th overall in the world for the 2016 UCI x Fise World Cup Series, returning to competition just a few months after ACL reconstructive surgery. After the 2016 season, Josh returned from China and founded The Josh Perry Foundation as his way of giving back to those with brain tumors, brain injuries, and other brain disorders. March 2017 Josh was informed he had 2 new tumors on the other side of his brain. Josh is going to finish his 2017 season before getting Gamma Knife treatment on the new growths.Josh continues to ride BMX at a professional level today, despite living with four brain tumors, and works extremely hard to stay fit, healthy, positive, and driven while sharing as much as he can with the world. Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on LinkedIn, Instagram, or via email mark@vudream.comLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast

Joseph De Sena, 44, has been an entrepreneur since his pre-teens. From selling fireworks at age eight, to starting a t-shirt business in high school, to building a multimillion-dollar pool business in college, to creating a Wall Street trading firm, De Sena is a living definition of the word "entrepreneur." Currently he is a managing director for ICAP, a brokerage agency.De Sena knows what it feels like to succeed outside the office, too - and that's the feeling he seeks to bring to the world's athletes with the Spartan Race series. Throughout his lifetime, he's competed in any extreme sports adventure he could find, testing his mental and physical endurance against nature.Growing up in Queens, Joe's mother valued healthy eating and living and passed along that value system. It's been well-documented that he worked hard growing up and ultimately got to Wall Street, where he made his mark and made himself a small fortune. He moved his family to Pittsfield, Vermont, and quickly entrenched himself and his family in the local landscape. Joe moved to Vermont in an attempt to get back to the way things used to be.It's also well documented that Joe turned an interest in endurance racing into a passion. His racing resume is the stuff of legends - over 50 ultra-events overall and 14 Ironman events in one year alone. Most of his races are 100 miles or more with a few traditional marathons in the mix. (He once said that running a 26.2 marathon distance was "adorable.")To put it in perspective, he did the Vermont 100, the Lake Placid Ironman and the Badwater Ultra... in one week. The elevation climb for the 135-mile Badwater race, which starts hundreds of feet below sea level in Death Valley, is over 8,500 feet up to Mt. Whitney and temperatures soar into the 120's. Joe also biked cross-country in the Furnace Creek 508 which has been coined "The Toughest 48 Hours in Sport." It's no wonder his favorite quote is, "Death is the price we pay for life, so make it worth it."Joe's other athletic achievements:- Raid International Ukatak: Canada, January 2001- IditaSport: Alaska February, 2001 (1st place)- Odyssey Adventure Race: Big Island, Va., March 2001- OAR Beast of the East: Clayton Lakes, Va., April 2001 (1st place)- Raid The North Extreme: Newfoundland, June 2001 (13th place out of 42)- Adrenaline Rush: Dublin, Ireland, July 2001- Discovery World Championships: St. Moritz, Switzerland August, 2001In 2005, Joe decided that the world needed a new race, something that had never been done. And so, together with Peak Races, he created The Death Race, a 24-hour mental and physical test filled with unknown obstacles (www.youmaydie.com). Racers couldn't and wouldn't know what to expect. The fear of the unknown would either break or motivate, and all they could do was try to survive. The race waiver includes three words: "I may die." It doesn't get any more real than that. No way to train, no way to prepare, just show up and make it to the end. And don't expect any love from Joe or the volunteers. They want to break these people, make them quit. Joe's been quoted as saying, "There's no light at the end of the tunnel. We're basically holding your hand to help you quit. The same way life does, right?"Joe, and other racers who came to be called the "Founding Few" wanted to create another event, something that captured the extreme spirit of the legendary Death Race, but was modified and accessible to a much wider racing audience. And so the Spartan Race (www.spartanrace.com) was born in 2010.Spartan Race has grown dramatically in 2013 over just the year before. The number of competitors now stands at approximately 350,000 racers in 60 races in 2013 in the U.S., Canada and the UK. Over 3 million "likes" are on Facebook, a new e-book is available at spartanrace.com, and an NBC Sports TV Special airs on Dec. 7, 2013. Participation in 2014 is expected to grow to 650,000 at events in 22-plus countries.Spartan intends to wake up the world up and save humanity, one racer at a time if need be. It's a race meant to challenge, to push, to intimidate, to test and even to break those brave enough to try, and it was designed by seven people who know what that feels like. "Fun run" doesn't apply here. It's about being uncomfortable, overcoming obstacles and finding out what's possible when what you expect of yourself is everything. In the words of Joe himself: "The phrase 'I can't' doesn't mean anything to me anymore, not because of my ego but because I know anything is possible."About Spartan RaceSpartan Race, voted Outside Magazine's Best Obstacle Race in 2012, is the world's leading obstacle racing series and the first of its kind to have global rankings. With 350,000 participants in 2013 at 60 events, Spartan Race is making this one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Spartan Race is a timed event series featuring races at four escalating distances in locations worldwide that culminate in a World Championship Finale with cash and prizes for the champions - with $300,000 in cash and prizes awarded in 2013 alone. While featuring competitive elite heats, Spartan Races are for athletes of all levels and abilities and are geared toward ripping people off their couches and into the outdoors.- www.spartan.com- https://joedesena.com/Catch my book - Screw Being Shy, on my website markmetry.comPlease do NOT hesitate to reach out to me for any reason on LinkedIn, Instagram, via email mark@vudream.com, text me 508-925-0261!LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast
Heather Monahan started from very humble beginnings growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts. After graduating from Clark University, she began her career in sales and quickly advanced to top salesperson and Brand Manager within her first year in corporate America. During this time Heather launched her personal brand to empower women and give them the insight and tips she had longed for as a young professional. She was the Keynote speaker at the Corinium CRO conference and held the main stage at the LOAC in NYC. Heather was recognized as a Glass Ceiling Award winner and as one of the Most Influential Women in radio in 2017. After being terminated by another woman in July 2017, Heather became a full time entrepreneur. In 2018 Heather was named the Brand Ambassador for Perry Ellis International's female brand Rafaella and Thrive Global named her a limit breaking female founder. Royce White was drafted 16th overall in the 2012 NBA draft. Ahead of being drafted he spoke openly about being diagnosed with anxiety disorder or (GAD) as a teenager. After being drafted, White publicly voiced concerns about the NBA having no concrete mental health policy. He advocated for a mental health reform within the NBA, all sports and the greater society. Since then he has not been on an NBA roster, even though he was likened to players such as Charles Barkley and LeBron James. Despite his absence from the NBA, it is clear that his advocacy has caused movement in the way the league is handling mental health. Recently NBA spokesperson Kathy Behrens stated that the NBA has great respect for White sharing his struggles and says that the league has a "growing understanding of the importance of the mental health subject."In May 2018, the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) hired its first mental health director. Dr. William D. Parham credited White, amongst other players, as having been instrumental in moving the needle forward.- https://www.10kfoundation.org/Catch my book - Screw Being Shy, on my website markmetry.comPlease do NOT hesitate to reach out to me for any reason on LinkedIn, Instagram, via email mark@vudream.com, text me 508-925-0261!LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast

Susan David, PhD, is a psychologist on faculty at Harvard Medical School, co-founder and co-director of the Institute of Coaching at McLean Hospital, and CEO of Evidence Based Psychology. An in-demand speaker and consultant, David has worked with senior leadership of hundreds of major organizations, including the United Nations, Ernst & Young, and the World Economic Forum. Her work has been featured in numerous leading publications, including the Harvard Business Review, Time, Fast Company, and the Wall Street Journal.Emotional agility is a revolutionary, science-based approach that allows us to navigate life's twists and turns with self-acceptance, clear-sightedness, and an open mind. Renowned psychologist Susan David developed this concept after studying emotions, happiness, and achievement for more than twenty years. She found that no matter how intelligent or creative people are, or what type of personality they have, it is how they navigate their inner world—their thoughts, feelings, and self-talk—that ultimately determines how successful they will become. The way we respond to these internal experiences drives our actions, careers, relationships, happiness, health—everything that matters in our lives. As humans, we are all prone to common hooks—things like self-doubt, shame, sadness, fear, or anger—that can too easily steer us in the wrong direction. Emotionally agile people are not immune to stresses and setbacks. The key difference is that they know how to adapt, aligning their actions with their values and making small but powerful changes that lead to a lifetime of growth. Emotional agility is not about ignoring difficult emotions and thoughts; it's about holding them loosely, facing them courageously and compassionately, and then moving past them to bring the best of yourself forward.Drawing on her deep research, decades of international consulting, and her own experience overcoming adversity after losing her father at a young age, David shows how anyone can thrive in an uncertain world by becoming more emotionally agile. To guide us, she shares four key concepts that allow us to acknowledge uncomfortable experiences while simultaneously detaching from them, thereby allowing us to embrace our core values and adjust our actions so they can move us where we truly want to go.- https://www.susandavid.com/Catch my book - Screw Being Shy, on my website markmetry.comPlease do NOT hesitate to reach out to me for any reason on LinkedIn, Instagram, via email mark@vudream.com, text me 508-925-0261!LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast
