It feels pretty corny to go out and say this, but this episode literally changed my life. Just about 5 months ago I got to interview Swish Goswami, who is one of the co-founders and the CEO of Trufan. Trufan is a tech startup in Toronto that helps brands generate segment and activate first and third-party data to information that you directly get from your followers, whether it's email, phone number, mailing address, and the data that they're providing to you through Instagram or Twitter based on their activity and how they're engaging with you. In this episode, Swish and I dive into entrepreneurship, leadership, basketball, and mental health amongst a ton of other topics. It was such a genuine, and engaging conversation and I am really glad to get the hour to chat with him. At the time of this interview which was the start of May 2021, I had a full-time job lined up as I was finishing up my undergrad in the Summer, but this conversation changed things around for me. Crazy enough, after the interview Swish asked me what I'm doing after school, and let me know what he is going to be launching Surf, the browser extension that rewards you for just browsing, and needed to start assembling a team for the launch which was coming up in September at the time. After a couple of rounds of interviews, I went ahead and rescinded my initial offer, and came to work with Swish and the team here at Trufan in the Summer, about 4 months ago. I'm now working full-time as a Product Owner and it has been one of the best decisions I ever made. To Swish – I want to thank you A) thank you for coming on the show in the first place, and b) for giving me a shot at a career in tech with such an amazing company like Trufan. This team is incredibly talented and driven but more importantly, they are just a genuine, kind group of people that I love to work with every day. I hope you guys enjoy the episode, and I'm excited to get back to interviewing coming into the tail end of 2021. Aanikh Kler is the COO and co-founder of Trufan, an audience powered data and analytics company. Trufan is building the future of the internet with their new product Surf. Surf is an innovative product that pays you to surf on the internet in exchange for your data which will be anonymized and cohorted so it can't be traced back to you.The problem with big tech and data is that they make tons of money off of it (over $500 billion in 2020 alone) and consumers see none of that money… Surf is trying to change that because you will essentially get paid to use the internet. A lot of people don't even know how your data is used by tech companies or how to protect their data and Surf is not only going to anonymize the data but will also allow consumers to remove their data from the database whenever they choose. The conversation around consumer data ownership is becoming more prevalent and Surf aims to be at the leading edge of the changes in the industry. Will it be the next big startup? Only time will tell. I personally believe in the product and even joined the team full time to help them on their mission to democratize social data. You can check out Surf here: www.joinsurf.comWHAT WE TALKED ABOUT2:53 - Growing up in Vancouver surrounded by family14:02 - NFTs25:48 - Developing his first app at 14, “UndrTheRadr”40:03 - Trufan's new product Surf and how it could revolutionize the internet60:35 - Acquiring two separate companies in under two years1:12:39 - How Trufan adapted when COVID hitFOLLOW AANIKHInstagram - @Aanikh -  https://www.instagram.com/aanikh/Twitter - @AanikhKler - https://twitter.com/aanikhkler?lang=enFOLLOW JACOBhttps://www.jacobkelly.ca/YouTube - Jacob KellyInstagram - @TheJacobKellyFOLLOW MY SOCIAL LIFEhttps://www.jacobkelly.ca/mysociallifeFOLLOW TRUFANhttps://www.trufan.ioInstagram - @Trufan.ioMUSICSong: Tough Love - Joakim Karudhttps://soundcloud.com/joakimkarudhttps://www.facebook.com/joakimkarudmusichttps://www.youtube.com/user/JoakimKarudMusic from SoundcloudMusic provided by RFM:https://youtu.be/jaoStyAQN4o

In #141, futurists hear from Swish Goswami, CEO & Co-founder of Trufan, an audience engagement platform that helps brands and influencers generate segmented first and third party data. Basically, it's a social intelligence platform that helps identify one's valuable followers by going through the world's largest database of social profiles: Social Rank. Trufan services businesses of all sizes, many of which you've heard of, such as VaynerMedia, NBA, Sony Music, Now This, FC Dallas, and more! By teaming up with large brands, Trufan offers a value exchange to users for their data, such as the ultimate gaming experience from Bud Light or free G Fuel for a year. Swish believes people should be compensated for their data and that Google, Opera, and Mozilla should take note of the way Trufan's customers are being rewarded. Swish Goswami is a 23-year-old Canadian Entrepreneur, Speaker, and Investor. He is the CEO and Founder of Trufan, a social intelligence platform that empowers brands and Influencers to make smarter marketing decisions through the power of data. Trufan has made two acquisitions, raised over $4.1 million, and their clients range from Samsung, Netflix, NBA, and NFL to a plethora of small to medium-sized businesses. Swish is an advisor and investor for social media companies and he has amassed notable accolades within Canadian Entrepreneurship. ❗ What is the PROBLEM that Trufan is solving? The old channels through which brands collect data are dying. Slowly but surely, the third-party data (data owned by companies like Facebook) market is deprecating in front of our eyes. Here are some examples that highlight the severity of the problem... By the end of 2022, trillions of dollars worth of data across Firefox, Chrome, and Safari will cease to exist because 3rd party cookies across these browsers is going away With the release of Apple's iOS 14 update, the new privacy rules are going to wipe out an 80-billion-dollar mobile ad tracking market overnight. The GDPR and CCPA (data privacy laws) are wreaking havoc on marketers that are looking to advertise with Instagram and Facebook. Therefore, first-party data is increasingly important. People need true ownership over their audience data, for use whenever and wherever they please. Dependency on companies like Facebook and Google are not viable long-term solutions.

In this episode, Jacob Kelly, former social media marketing manager of Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, and founder of JAK Marketing brings a ton of value for anyone who wants to learn to turn their creative passions into a business. We talk all about how to stop waiting and start taking action. We also get into the way that the education system may not teach us what we need for business. He talks about how much of what you learn in online business and social media marketing will be learned only by doing. But, that school can in fact give us the foundation to get there. Trying Not To Give UpDid you know most people quit producing their podcast by episode seven? Jacob discusses the difficulties of persisting, but how to build systems and habits that will help you surpass this seven episode barrier.Jacob has shown perseverance as he has gone from episode zero to well over a hundred with hardly missing a beat. We discussed the idea that as creative people we need to find ways to carve our own paths. This can be in our own work, or in our side hustles. Or both. Jacob is the founder of JAKMarketing and hosts the hit podcast My Social Life, in partnership with Trufan. We went deep into the topics that are discussed on his podcast. Specifically how we are often curating our own social media content to build a reputation, but that there is always a real person behind the feed and stories. We discussed in great detail how to start a podcast, from the technology requirements to editing, uploading and everything in between. Jacob answers questions like how did you get started? What is the free way to start a podcast? And how do we go about marketing each episode to get the most engagement. Finally, we discussed that having purpose and meaning in our work is so important. Jacob shared his own current learning goals and some wisdom for young entrepreneurs. This is one of those episodes that could have went on for days. You are sure to learn a lot from giving this one a listen.Keys To Starting A PodcastI have lists all over the place. I have a list on Twitter of people to D.M. to come on a podcast. I have a folder on my Instagram of photos I've saved of people to reach out to. I also have a note on my phone that I write in when people come to me, or I see their stuff. So I have lists all over the place. I'll find those and I'll start messaging people. It is different being a guest, but I actually love being the interviewee because in every single podcast I get something different out of being the guest. Right? I think part of my love of being a guest is because if I ever have a job interview or something, I would do far better than I would before.I found that I learned by doing, I learned so much more by doing and I figured out my podcast interview cadence. I figured out how to edit better. I figured out how to read people better. There's just things that you're only going to be able to learn by actually doing it. So what I always tell people is to just start!I think it was the commitment to having my first guest that got me from planning to taking action on the podcast. It held me accountable to getting it together and figuring out how to edit and all that stuff.Anchor is completely free, but I was being fancy and I got Simplecast. Fifteen bucks a month, I believe is what the charge is and again, it's very similar to anchor, a little bit different. It comes with its own website for your podcast and you can brand it yourself. It's great for preserving your audio. If anything weird happens and it's the best sounding audio quality of anything that I've ever used to record audio remotely. With Zoom, it would transmit from my computer to your computer and record on your computer. When it's recording straight into your computer, it keeps it in a higher audio quality.A negative is the amount of time commitment that podcasting takes. But to not scare anybody listening to this, it doesn't have to be that way. I don't have to do any of that. I choose to. If you want to just sit down, you can literally stop recording, schedule and be done with it and spend two minutes editing the podcast. With my personality type, I have to do it that way. But you don't have to if you're starting.High School Creativity And BusinessJacob talks about his creativity growing up and how it actually started with an interest in the film industry. He started out wanting to be a filmmaker in a role of director and writer. But, he found very little outlet for that passion. And social media was yet to be an interconnected space where he could do as much self learning as someone could now.We talked about the fact that now, even though it's not too long later, it's much clearer that you can find very high quality learning opportunities on google, or social media platforms. But, turning to where there were possibilities in highschool, he got interested in business and enrolled in a specific highschool program where he got to make his first pitch for investment dollars. Funny enough, that became a digital media agency to bring local businesses a greater return on marketing investments. He explains how education, both in highschool and college didn't lead to specifics for starting his businesses. But that it did establish a solid foundation for him to build off of. While there is a lot of hate for formal education, it can really create a base for us to then go pursue strengths and interests on.Memorable Quotes“It was pretty quickly on, that I realized the relationships I'm going to form through the podcast are far more valuable or equally as valuable as the downloads. My podcast has connected me with people literally all over the world, Australia, England, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Florida, all over the world.”“I didn't start recording because I didn't think I was ready. I had to figure out the podcast name, had to come up with cover art and I had to be able to do my intro and had to know who I was going to interview. I had to figure out how to get guests and how to do interviews. You could have given me another six months of trying to figure it out. I still wouldn't have been ready because I found that I only learned by doing.”“Just start, especially for your audience. I think that's going to be key. To stop debating and start doing because you're going to learn. You're never going to be ready by thinking, planning and strategizing. I understand that it does have a place and that can be important. But there's a point where it becomes counterproductive, so just start and you'll figure it out along the way.”Guest BioJacob Kelly got his start in sports social media at 19 years old as the Digital Manager for the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League. Prior to running this agency, he was the Digital Manager for the Ottawa REDBLACKS, responsible for all social media channels, email and web content. In addition to the CFL day job, he leveraged his podcasting experience to launch a second show, called REDBLACKS Unfiltered, which launched at the top of the football podcast charts. In partnership with Trufan, Jacob hosts the hit podcast “My Social Life”. This week, I talked with 22-year-old Tech Entrepreneur Aanikh Kler. Aanikh is the co-founder of the social inelegance platform Trufan, a Toronto based startup that has raised over 1.8 million dollars in venture funding. Aanikh's entrepreneurial journey started at the age of 14 when he was featured on CBC's Dragons Den (the Canadian version of Shark Tank) and became the youngest social entrepreneur ever to receive venture funding for a mobile ringtone app he created called UndrTheRadr. The app donated 20 cents of every download to Free the Children. In 2015, Aanikh was named one of Plan Canada's 20 Under 20, an award that recognized 20 of Canada's brightest youth leaders. As a result, I was thrilled to have Aanikh on the program to discuss his entrepreneurial journey, and of course, his ambitions for Trufan and beyond in the coming years!
