One of Hollywood's most popular and beloved child stars, Margaret O'Brien turned in performances on Suspense that outshone some of the adult performers of the era. We'll hear the star of Meet Me in St. Louis in a wartime drama with May Whitty in "Cricket" (originally aired on CBS on March 15, 1945). Then, she stars in Ray Bradbury's "The Screaming Woman" (originally aired on CBS on November 25, 1948).
On Tuesday's Morning Focus, we discussed the results of a survey of Clare businesses, who outlined the impact of COVID-19 on their companies. Firstly, Gavin spoke with Margaret O'Brien and Allen Flynn, CEO and President of Ennis Chamber respectively.
Businesses in Ennis are to be surveyed on the future of business in the town. Ennis Chamber has launched an extensive survey, in association with Clare FM - which will ask business people and others for their views on the supports needed for traders, on how the coronavirus will affected business, and on whether banks and insurance companies are being co-operative at this time. The survey will also ask whether Ennis town centre needs to be pedestrianised - to accommodate physical distancing requirements. On Tuesday's Morning Focus, Gavin spoke with Margaret O'Brien and Allen Flynn of Ennis Chamber.

Find us at: iTunes Spotify Patreon CONTENT WARNING: Discussions of racism and antisemitism, along with problematic elements of this film. It’s been so, so long since we watched a solidly good movie, and this week we’re back on track. Vincente Minnelli Found a muse in Judy Garland and took her from cute little girl roles to powerhouse talent over the making of this movie. Not that Judy didn’t act like the star she was, but it doesn’t hurt the performance on screen. But it’s not just Judy we’re obsessed with - Margaret O’Brien’s adorably twisted performance as the death-obsessed Tootie was genuinely hilarious, and the supporting cast is phenomenal. It’s no wonder this film has a perfect critical score on Rotten Tomatoes and was one of the biggest successes of the 1940’s. And even though it’s not exactly set at Christmas, it qualifies by launching “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” right into the Christmas canon. “Meet Me In St. Louis” tells the story of the Smith family as they experience the changes in the city leading up the 1904 World’s Fair. There are trials and tribulations but through it all the family sticks together. Starring Judy Garland, Margaret O’Brien, Mary Astor, Leon Ames, Harry Davenport and many others and directed by our “Director of the Month” Vincente Minnelli it a true classic full of wonderful music and memorable scenes.
Soul Music tells the story of the song, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, and talks to people for whom it has special meaning. 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas', was first performed by Judy Garland in the 1944 MGM musical Meet Me In St Louis', for the now famous scene in which Garland and her seven year old sister, played by Margaret O'Brien are downcast about the prospect of moving away from their beloved home. Garland asked the composer, Hugh Martin to modify his original lyric, explaining it to be too depressing for her to sing, or the audience to hear. Martin's collaborator and friend, John Fricke, explains the importance this song had for the composer and the joy he experienced in hearing it covered by every major artist since, from Frank Sinatra to Chrissie Hynde, Punk band Fear to Cold Play, Rod Stewart to James Taylor. It's clear that the song's enduring power lies in a beautiful melody with a melancholic feel that sums up our emotional ambivalence to the Christmas season. We hear from those who have a special connection to the song. Producer Lucy Lunt.
