Published earlier this year from Running Press, Kristen Lopez's But Have You Read the Book?: 52 Literary Gems That Inspired Our Favorite Films looks at almost a hundred years of film adaptations of novels. The book offers a survey of how directors, actors, and screenwriters have transformed the raw material of fiction into works that were sometimes transgressive, sometimes reverential, and always compelling. Among the adaptations are William Wyler's Wuthering Heights (1939) from the Emily Bronte novel; Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park (1993) from Michael Crichton's novel; Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) from Philip K. Dick's “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”; and Sophia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides (1999) from Jeffrey Eugenides 1993 novel. I am excited to have Kristen Lopez on the podcast to discuss the book. Kristen has been the Film Editor at The Wrap since 2022 and the creator of the podcast Ticklish Business. Kristen's work has also been published in Culturess, Forbes, The Movie Isle, Citizen Dame, and Remezcla. John Yargo is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Boston College. He earned a PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the environmental humanities and early modern culture. In 2023, his dissertation won the J. Leeds Barroll Prize, given by the Shakespeare Association of America. Welcome to Heilman & Haver - Episode 76. We hope you enjoy the show! Please join the conversation - email us with thoughts and ideas and connect with the show on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and at heilmanandhaver.com. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Kristen Lopez Kristen Lopez is author of the new book But Have You Read the Book? 52 Literary Gems That Inspired Our Favorite Films. In it, Kristen offers an endlessly fascinating look at 52 beloved screen adaptations and the great reads that inspired them. Some films, like Clueless — Amy Heckerling's interpretation of Jane Austen's Emma — diverge wildly from the original source material, while others, like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, shift the point of view to craft a different experience within the same story. Kristen explores just what makes these works classics of both the page and screen, and why each made for an exceptional adaptation — whether faithful to the book or exemplifying cinematic creative license. Kristen is a pop culture essayist, TV editor for IndieWire, and she's worked as an entertainment journalist for over 15 years, with her articles appearing at Variety, MTV, TCM, and Roger Ebert. A California native, Kristen was raised in a small suburb near Sacramento and graduated with a Masters in English from California State University, Sacramento. She is also the creator of the classic film podcast, Ticklish Business. In her free time, Kristen enjoys reading and finding Old Hollywood connections in her neighborhood. She joined us from her home in Los Angeles. Find her writing at TheWrap.com and she's on Instagram and Twitter at kristenlopez88.

Featuring an interview with Kristen Lopez of the Ticklish Business podcast. Barbara Stanwyck deserves to be considered among the greatest stars of classic Hollywood. Why do Hepburn, Davis & Crawford get all the love? This hidden noir gem from 1946 provides the perfect opportunity to dip our toe in the 70 year career of this screen legend. Directed by Lewis Milestone. Written by Roberts Rossen & Riskin. Starring Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizbeth Scott & Introducing Kirk Douglas. How is the world wrong about this film? From Andras: This film has so much going for it. A lurid title. An amazing cast led by one of the greatest actresses of the era. The screen debut of Kirk Douglas. And yet, I never hear anyone talking about it. Well, that ends now. My strange love for “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers” will not be deterred. Kristen Lopez Movie goers are often subjected to portrayals of people with disabilities that reinforce the many stereotypes and stigmas. But film critic Kristen Lopez says some films are bucking this trend and sees hope on the horizon. Hosts Alysa Chadow and Eddie Ytuarte trade stories of their favorite plots and portrayals with Ms Lopez. Kristen Lopez is a freelance pop culture essayist and critic based in Sacramento whose work has appeared at Film School Rejects, Remezcla and Paste. She also runs the classic film podcast Ticklish Business and the website Journeys in Classic Film. In her free time she enjoys classic movies, reading, and all things Oscar Isaac. This is Part Two of our discussion with Kristen Lopez, Alysa Chadow and Eddie Ytuarte. Part One was broadcast March 16 of this year. The post Disability in Film with Movie Critic Kristen Lopez ~ Part Two appeared first on KPFA.
Kristen Lopez Is disability as portrayed in American popular cinema slowly transforming itself? Are filmmakers getting away from the good old days when a person with a disability was often viewed as a friendly, intellectually-challenged creature to be cuddled and protected because us disabled folk could not fend for ourselves or offer gifts to society? Are popular films breaking away from the usual Hollywood mushy, exploitative treatment of disability in films like the 1957, “An Affair to Remember?” And furthermore, is the film industry questioning the knee jerk idea that disability equals evil? Freelance film critic Kristen Lopez takes up these topics and more with Eddie Ytuarte and Alysha Chadow. Kristen Lopez is a Sacramento disabled freelance film critic and essayist whose work has appeared on The Hollywood Reporter, The Daily Beast, RogerEbert.com, and TCM. She's the creator of two podcasts, Citizen Dame and Ticklish Business which allow her to indulge her love of feminism and film. She says she spends far too much time on her Twitter page @Journeys_Film and adds, “The Little Mermaid – yes, I'm arguing that's a narrative about a woman with disabilities.” The post Disability Goes To the Movies appeared first on KPFA.
Kristen Lopez confesses her dirty little secret to the world. She was a film writer and pop culture commentator that had not seen Citizen Kane. She joins James to confess and correct her shame. In this 90-minute conversation Kristen and James exorcise some demons and confront Citizen Kane's place in film history, film criticism and popular culture. The lovely Ben-Hur episode I had planned for everyone ended up vanishing into cyberspace leaving me scrambling for a last minute replacement. Thankfully that came in the form of two interviews with classic film authors Peter Winkler (author of Real James Dean: Intimate Memories From Those Who Knew Him Best) and Scott Tracy Griffin (author of Tarzan on Film). The two sit down with me to talk their respective titles and the stars that inspired them. Be sure to follow Ticklish Business on Twitter at @Ticklish_Biz. Next Week: Ben-Hur - Take 2
