The Film stars Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman. Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Scott Glenn, Dennis Haysbert, Judy Davis, E.G. Journalist Kerrie Davies with the story of how novelist Miles Franklin went undercover as a maid for a year, in Sydney and Melbourne's wealthy houses, well before gonzo journalists became household names. The real-life story of novelist Stella Maria Miles Franklin had an unexpected chapter after publishing My Brilliant Career. In 1903, Miles became a 'girl stunt reporter' by going undercover as a servant. For a year, she lived as a maid in Sydney and Melbourne's wealthy houses and wrote about the humiliations and drudgery in the daily lives of servant girls, or 'slaveys'.During her experiment she hand-rolled heavy, wet clothes through a washing mangle; served her employers pre-breakfast tea and toast in bed, which she thought was an obscene indulgence; she cleaned guest rooms and parlours; helped at high-society balls and kept fires burning in winter. The manuscript Miles wrote about this year pre-dated George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London by three decades, yet it never found a publisher.Journalist Kerrie Davies has investigated this little-known chapter of Miles' life, finally bringing this story to life in her own book. This episode of Conversations explores feminism, suffragettes, biography, books, servants, writing, Australian fiction, boy sober, class warfare, adventures, adventurous women, risk-taking, origin stories, gonzo journalism, Nellie Bly, Rose Scott, early 20th century Sydney, Chicago, women's rights, trad wives, motherhood, partnership, self-partnering.Miles Franklin Undercover is published by Allen and Unwin.

CW: This episode discusses cinematic sexual violence.Violet Lucca, the author of the new monograph David Cronenberg: Clinical Trials, returns to the podcast from Brooklyn to discuss the book and his controversial 1991 adaptation of William S. Burroughs' Naked Lunch starring Peter Weller and Judy Davis, filmed in Toronto standing in for 50s New York and Morocco, recreated by Cronenberg's longtime production designer Carol Spier in a former General Electric plant in Toronto's west end.We discuss Cronenberg's lifelong connection to Canadian cinema and the city of Toronto with digressions on Videodrome, The Dead Zone and The Fly before grappling with Naked Lunch, which is less of a literal film version of the novel and more a meditation about the life of Burroughs and what it is to be an artist in general. We also discuss Cronenberg's cinematic explorations of paranoia and conspiracy theories, and his relationship to the queer artistic community in Canada reflected across his career, even if he's always identified himself as a heterosexual man.And we (briefly) contrast Naked Lunch with the new Burroughs cinematic adaptation, Luca Guadagnino's Queer starring Daniel Craig, which we feel misses the boat on how to adapt Burroughs for the screen.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. This week, Roy Scheider plays a small but pivotal supporting role in David Cronenberg's cult classic, NAKED LUNCH! Adapted from the novel by William S. Burroughs, Scheider stars alongside Peter Weller, Judy Davis, Ian Holm, and more in what may be the strangest and one of the last great movie of his career.
Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast, where each week I recommend four films I think you should check out. This week, I've picked a mix of holiday movies that range from heartwarming to hilariously chaotic. Whether you're looking for some nostalgia, laughs, or a little Christmas chaos, these films have something to offer. First up is…One Magic Christmas (1985)This film has a quiet charm that's perfect for the holiday season. Starring Mary Steenburgen, it tells a story of family, second chances, and finding the true spirit of Christmas. What's interesting about the movies is how grounded it feels, even with its supernatural elements. One of my favorite bit of casting in this film is Harry Dean Stanton, who plays a guardian angel, a role that feels tailor-made for his calm, understated presence.Mixed Nuts (1994)This is a screwball Christmas comedy that might not have gotten the love it deserved when it came out. Directed by Nora Ephron, it has an incredible ensemble cast that includes Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, and even a young Adam Sandler. The movie is set at a suicide crisis hotline office during the holidays, which makes for plenty of chaotic, offbeat humor. The film's quirky tone might feel unusual, but if you stick with it, there are a lot of funny moments. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning, featuring Louis Armstrong's version of “Christmas in New Orleans” and an original song by Sandler, among many others. The Ref (1994)With an apt working title of, Hostile Hostages, this dark comedy, which stars Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey is one of those Christmas movies that focuses on dysfunction. Leary plays a thief who ends up stuck with a bickering married couple on Christmas Eve, and the results are sharp, biting, and weirdly festive. It is a strange combo, but The Ref somehow manage to balance its humor with just enough heart. Trapped in Paradise (1994)This one leans more into the slapstick side of comedy, with Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and Dana Carvey as three brothers who get caught up in a bank heist in a small town during Christmas. The small-town setting adds a proper holiday feel, but the movie's about as chaotic as you'd expect with this cast. Although weird, the chaos is not centered around Cage for a change. He gives a grounded performance. Nicolas Cage has said in interviews that filming this movie was a challenge due to constant rewrites and freezing temperatures on location in Ontario, Canada. Despite the problems on the set, the end result, has a charm that makes it worth revisiting. Those are my recommendations for the holiday season. They are four holiday movies that have a solid mix of magic, dysfunction, and comedy. I hope you'll give one (or all) of them a shot this season. Let me know what you think, and I'll see you soon for more recommendations on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Kerry and Collin are joined by first-time guest, longtime friend, film critic Nick Digilio, who claims "The Ref"--starring Dennis Leary, Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis--is his favorite Christmas film of all time. Collin has similar feelings and wanted to wait until the movie had an anniversary, so it could be featured prominently in the December line-up, when the movie would hopefully get more attention than it did back in the day. Why did the studio botch its release? Do people still make fruitcake jokes today? How did screenwriter Richard LaGravenese get his revenge on a Chicago film critic with this film? Also, Nick's choice for a Christmas episode/TV special is none other than the classic "Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special." It truly is one of the best Christmas specials of all, as evidenced by the joy everyone experienced making it and the joy it continues to bring to audiences several generations later. (NOTE: Apologies for some of the sound quality on this one. It's mostly in the first 15 minutes).
"Mary...Gag your grandma."The weather is cold outside, snow is falling, lights are twinkling in tinsel on trees, and we've got another great entry for your holiday film line-up! This week, we're traveling to Ontario, Canada to join Henrique and David for a mid 90s Christmas classic about love, understanding, and dysfunction in the family. When a robbery gets botched, a cynical cat burglar takes a bickering couple hostage on Christmas Eve, posing as their marriage counselor at a family gathering to evade the local police on his trail in 1994s "The Ref"! Directed by Ted Demme and starring Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey. Hear your hosts talk about how Comedy Central brought this film into their lives, why Denis Leary was perfect for the role of Gus, just how insanely funny and memorable the dinner sequence is, why thefilm deserves a revisit every December, plus David and Henrique share their reviews for "Nutcrackers" & "Hot Frosty"!Visit our website: DoYouEvenMovie.com Email us: doyouevenmoviepod@gmail.com LIKE us on Facebook: Do You Even Movie? - PodcastFollow Us on Instagram: @DoYouEvenMoviePod Twitter: https://x.com/dyempodRent "The Ref" on Amazon Prime:https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B006RXQ1EI/

In this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched Absolute Power, the 1997 conspiracy thriller directed by Clint Eastwood from a screenplay by William Goldman and based off of a David Baldacci novel of the same name. In addition to Eastwood, Absolute Power stars Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Judy Davis, Scott Glenn and Dennis Haysbert. In Absolute Power, Eastwood plays Luther Whitney, a master thief who makes the fateful decision to rob billionaire Walter Sullivan, a close friend and ally of the president of the United States. During the burglary, Whitney sees President Alan Richmond assault Sullivan's wife, Christy, with whom he is having an affair. When she fights back, the president's security detail kills her. Sullivan, who witnesses the altercation, escapes with evidence of the killing. When he becomes prime suspect in an investigation led by local police, Whitney devotes himself to exposing the president's misdeed while evading Sullivan's hired assassin — who believes Whitney is responsible — as well as a secret service agent who wants to silence the only witness. The tagline for Absolute Power was "Corrupts Absolutely."You can find Absolute Power to rent or purchase on Amazon Prime and Apple TV.For the next episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John will watch the 1997 thriller The Devil's Own, directed by Alan J. Pakula and starring Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt. It's available to stream on Netflix or for rent or purchase from Amazon or Apple TV.

Send us a Text Message. An Australian author — and the 1979 film adaptation of her work — capture Kim and Amy's fancy this week on the show. Published in 1901 and written when author Miles Franklin was only eighteen years old, My Brilliant Career became an instant classic of Australian literature and still delights readers with its feisty heroine, Sybylla Melvin, and its realistic depiction of Australian life and lingo at the turn of the 20th century. In our discussion of the novel and its film adaptation (starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill) we'll explain why Franklin's fear of being a literary one-hit-wonder proved unfounded, and why her name today graces one of Australia's top annual literary prizes.Mentioned in this episode:Miles FranklinMy Brilliant Career filmMy Brilliant Career novelJudy DavisSam NeillDirector Gillain ArmstrongOscar and LucindaCharlotte GreyBlackwood's publishing houseAnne of Green GablesThe Thorn BirdsBrent of Bin BinUp the Country by Brent of Bin BinLost Ladies of Lit Episode No. 128 on Margaret OliphantHenry LawsonCold Comfort Farm by Stella GibbonsSupport the Show. For episodes and show notes, visit: LostLadiesofLit.comDiscuss episodes on our Facebook Forum. In this episode of Raven Conversations, Majors Laura Dutton and Callie Kiaunis talk with Col. Kicking off Women's History Month, here is a truly unique take on one of the most famous (or infamous) monarchs in the history of French royalty. Kirsten Dunst stars as the eponymous Queen married to King Louis XVI (Jason Schwartzman) - their reign lasted from 1774 through 1793 and happened to be during one of the most tumultuous periods in French history. Though you would be forgiven for not noticing this for most of their story as we watch Marie live a legendarily decadent lifestyle filled with colorful clothes, food, and company. This was director Sofia Coppola's follow-up to her Oscar-winning smash from three years prior, Lost in Translation, and it was generally looked upon during initial release as a disappointment. Over the past 18 years though, its reputation has grown somewhat thanks to Coppola's inventive direction and her memorable decision to fill the soundtrack with anachronistic New Wave pop music. If nothing else, it's a true original and the stacked cast also includes Judy Davis, Rose Byrne, Jamie Dornan, Asia Argento, and then very baby-faced Tom Hardy. Let Them Eat Cake indeed!!!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
I'm Josh Cooperman with Convo By Design and this is the first of a 10 part series called Convo By Design presents WestEdge Wednesday's with conversation held at the WestEdge Design Fair in late November, 2023 from Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, California. This conversation features Moya O'Neill of Moya Living,Nancy Russert of Les Beaux Interiors and Twist Custom, Lenora Aguilar and Judy Davis of Vintage Junktion and moderated by Luxe Magazine's Kelly Phillips Badal. This is a conversation called, Up-Cycled, Recycled, Repurposed, Local and Fabulous; Specifying and Sourcing Locally. The idea here is that design has entered a new era. One that is not defined by beauty or expense alone. We have entered an experiential phase of interior design, landscape design, exteriors and architecture. One that places a greater value on the experience and enjoyment of materiality, objects and usefulness of things as opposed to simply how expensive, luxurious or rare things happen to be. Thank you for listening to this episode of the podcast. For more, please make sure you are subscribing to the feed and check our IG often for new conversations. This chat was amazing and was held live on the stage designed by Marbe Designs and presented by BR Home. For links to everything associated with this conversation, please check the podcast episode notes accessible from the “podcast” tab from Convo By Design. Thank you Moya, Judy, Lenora, Nancy and Kelly for your incredible insights, knowledge base and willingness to share your gifts. So, let's get to it. Here's Kelly Phillips Badal.
We are celebrating Christmas with Ted Demme's 1994 dark comedy, The Ref, starring Denis Leary, Kevin Spacey, Judy Davis, and Glynis Johns. The Ref tells the story of a burglar who ends up taking a family hostage as a way of eluding capture as the cops scour the area for him; however, he gets more than he bargained for when the family turns out to be wildly dysfunctional. This movie had a fantastic cast, director, and writer and was well reviewed critically. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate unconventional therapy and gagging grandmas as we make the call on The Ref.
CHRISTMAS MOVIE WEEK 2023 continues! And this second episode happens to focus on a strange, little studio holiday-themed comedy which actually came out thirty years ago this coming Easter....It stars then stand-up comedian Denis Leary in his first starring role in a feature film - he plays Gus, a career thief who is robbing the homes of some wealthy residents in a snowy New England town when suddenly he's about to be caught.....so he ends up on the lam with a local couple (Kevin Spacey, Judy Davis) and keeping them hostage in their home while he tries to figure out how to skip town while avoiding the cops. Of course this isn't just ANY couple....they're on the verge of divorce, CONSTANTLY arguing even when in his armed presence. So while trying to figure out what to do and keeping tabs on them, he in essence becomes their.....REF so to say. :) And what results is a raucous R-rated Christmas comedy directed by the late, great Ted Demme. Miriam Margolyes "can't resist naughtiness". The actor famed for her character roles and her outrageous chat show appearances is described as someone for whom currency is laughter - by any means possible: outrage, obscenity, and occasional flatulence. Despite recent heart surgery and a body she describes as "crumbling concrete", the 82-year-old is refusing to slow down. Miriam will be in New Zealand this summer to shoot Holy Days - a film about a group of nuns fighting a development order, starring alongside Judy Davis and Joanna Scanlan, and has just finished her second memoir: Oh Miriam: Stories from an Extraordinary Life. She speaks to Susie Ferguson.
[ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] The year is 1985 and the nominees are: 1. Sissy Spacek - The River 2. Vanessa Redgrave - The Bostonians 3. Jessica Lange - Country 4. Judy Davis - A Passage to India 5. Sally Field - Places in the Heart - In 1985 Sally Field won her second Oscar playing a widow struggling to save her farm in Places in the Heart. This was an odd year in that there were 2 other similarly nominated roles for both Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek. Each of films portrayed a woman trying to keep her family and farm from being foreclosed by the bank. Honestly these films began to blur together while viewing. Oh this is also the famous year when Field said the famously misquoted quote, “I can't deny the fact that you like me! Right now! You like me!” Judy Davis became a first time nominee for the David Lean epic in A Passage to India. This was Lean's return to screen after a 14 year hiatus following the negative reviews from critics for the film Ryan's Daughter. Finally, Vanessa Redgrave plays a suffragette in the extremely queer coded The Bostonians. Who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Dylan Mahaney as they discuss.

I believe it was Dorothy Parker who said, "I hate writing. I love having written." That applies in spades for songwriting. For me, anyway. My voice coach, Judy Davis, used to talk about songwriters vs. song-maker-uppers ... I like to think of myself as a songwriter. Of course, she loved the old standards more than anything. For good reason. We boomers have our own standards.

12 Days of Christmas jingles along here at Mashley at the Movies, as Aaron joins us to talk about the 1994 holiday crime comedy, The Ref.
Nashville-based singer-songwriters Carly Layne and Andrew Shaver join us for a special family-themed Thanksgiving episode to discuss the dark comedy, THE REF starring Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey. MNAM's holiday season kicks off with this Ted Demme-directed movie about a professional thief who gets more than he bargained for while holding a dysfunctional family hostage. THE REF was released to little fanfare in March of 1994, but has since gained a cult following as an unconventional Christmas classic thanks to its sharp performances and biting, profanity-laced dialogue. In a conversation slightly less raunchy, we'll pass final judgment on THE REF, and take some diversions into Bridget Jones's Diary, engagement stories, problematic artists, cousins, music royalties, Wrongfully Accused, blackmail, YouTube families, and much much more! THE REF is currently available to stream for free with subscription on Hoopla.

An undercover SAS officer is all that stands between a terrorist group and the murder of high-ranking hostages. Directed by Ian Sharp and produced by Euan Lloyd of Wild Geese and Sea Wolves fame, Who Dares Wins takes inspiration from the SAS' 1980 Iranian Embassy Assault and boasted at the time to be as close to the real thing as possible. While the film has arguably become a cult classic its tone shifts throughout the film ranging from Cold War thriller to Bond-like romp to all all out action movie. Celebrity is the 28th film written and directed by Woody Allen, first released in 1998. Kenneth Branagh stars as Lee Simon, a journalist with aspirations of higher writing and a better life. He has just split from his wife Robin, played by Judy Davis. The two go on separate searches for happiness through fame. Lee by hanging around it, Robin by accidentally becoming it. Coming straight after Deconstructing Harry, Celebrity is another harsh, angry film. Shot in stark black and white and with a biting, sour message. It is one of Allen's biggest casts and a large sprawling story. There's a lot of film here to discuss. Welcome to the Woody Allen Pages Podcast, by me, the creator of the Woody Allen Pages website. This week, episode 13, we look at 1998's Celebrity. How it was conceived, how it was made, and how just big it is. Spoilers are everywhere so watch the film first, then come back. We don't want to believe that we could lose our children to something that we can't fight for them; unfortunately, depression, addiction and suicidal tendencies have become significantly more evident in teenagers around the world in recent years. And that is terrifying to every one of us who have teens of our own. How do you fight your child's own mind? Judy Davis is one such parent, who nearly lost her son to addiction and suicide before she even realized he was struggling so much. She returns to Mighty Parenting, joining Mighty Parenting podcast host Sandy Fowler to share her story and her son's—a story of hope for parents, to remind us that suicide prevention is possible and so is recovery, be it from addiction, depression, or other mental and physical illnesses. With the right tools and support for yourself and your child, you can help them save themselves—and maybe one day, they can save others too. What Charlie Chaplin did to Adolf Hitler in “The Great Dictator” Woody Allen does to himself in “Deconstructing Harry”. Written & Directed by Woody Allen. Starring Woody Allen, Hazelle Goodman, Judy Davis, Elisabeth Shue, Kirstie Alley, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Julie Kavner, Demi Moore, Amy Irving, Caroline Aaron, Mariel Hemingway, Tobey Maguire, Robin Williams, Stanley Tucci, Bob Balaban, Eric Bogosian, Billy Crystal How is the world wrong about Deconstructing Harry? From Andras: Woody Allen's films are often used, misleadingly, as evidence to justify the accusations against him. A film like “Deconstructing Harry” does the opposite. In Allen's most direct cinematic response to the end of his relationship with Mia Farrow he portrays himself as a pill popping, booze swilling, womanizer who brings misery upon those around him by using their lives for his art. A guilty man might be expected to portray himself as innocent but Allen seems to be saying, “It's true. I am horrible. Just not the way you think”. This is not only the response of an innocent man. It's the response of a great artist. Currently available on Tubi. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
