"Stranger Things" is an American television series created by the Duffer Brothers for Netflix. The fifth and final season was released in three volumes, including the finale, in November and December 2025. The show combines elements of horror, science fiction, mystery, coming-of-age, and drama. Set in the 1980s, the series centers on the residents of the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, after a young girl with psychokinetic abilities named Eleven inadvertently creates a wormhole known as the Upside Down at a nearby secretive government research facility, connecting Earth to a hostile realm called the Abyss. The Duffer Brothers developed Stranger Things as a blend of investigative drama and supernatural horror, infused with childlike wonder and references to the popular culture of the 1980s. Several thematic and directorial elements were inspired by the works of Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, David Lynch, Stephen King, Wes Craven, H. P. Lovecraft, and FromSoftware.The show also drew inspiration from Cold War-era experiments and conspiracy theories involving secret government programs. The series has received positive reviews throughout its run, with praise for its characterization, atmosphere, acting, direction, writing, and homage to 1980s cinema, making it a touchstone of 1980s nostalgia. It has garnered many accolades and is widely regarded as one of the greatest television shows of all time. Maya Hawke is best known for her day job as an actor, most visibly in a little show called Stranger Things, and she was also in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and the new Wes Anderson movie, Asteroid City. But as you'll hear in this chat, she might be most excited by a side path as a singer and songwriter. Hawke has released two understated but fantastic albums so far, and she's basically finished another. The vibe is sort of indie-folk, sort of floating and ambient but lyrically really engaging. She's worked with some cool folks to realize her musical vision, including Christian Lee Hutson, who's the “Christian” referenced in this conversation, just so you know. ⁠Check out⁠ a “Sweet Tooth” from Hawke's 2022 album Moss right here. Sabrina Teitelbaum just released her debut album under the name Blondshell, and it's one of the best of 2023 so far. She describes it in this conversation as an emergency album—meaning a bunch of songs that she felt almost desperate to write, record, and unleash on the world. It's direct and angry in spots, but also darkly funny and completely unafraid. She's toured with the likes of Horsegirl and Porridge Radio, which might give some indication of what you're in for. Jena Malone had me at the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. When the actor/songwriter started our discussion talking about Millay and the profound effect poetry has on her songwriting process, I swooned. There's a theme here: I've had a lot of actor/songwriters on the pod recently (Maya Hawke, Sasha Spielberg, The Wolff Brothers) and it's not surprising that, given their other day jobs when they're not singing, language is particularly important in their songwriting process. Malone is also a parent, and we discuss the role that motherhood plays in her songwriting process. But as you'll hear, for Malone there's no place like the back of an Uber to do some good writing. Her latest album is Flowers for Men.

All you need to know about Maya Hawke's dedication to wordcraft is summed up in this memory: "The day I fell in love with my husband was the day we got into a fight about free verse poetry versus formal poetry."
