In this episode we interview eco-explorer Mario Rigby. Born in Turks & Caicos, Mario spent his childhood in Germany, before moving to Toronto as a teen. The city changed his perspective of the outdoors, until one day he decided to walk the length of Africa. While training, he reconnected with nature, much as he did on the island with his brother. But what inspired him to take on such a feat? Mario had aspirations of becoming a track and field olympian and was competing at the highest level. That was until lack of funding and injuries put things on pause. He fell back on a 9 to 5, but as an olympian, that wasn't going to cut it. Mario missed the challenges of competition. He decided to rekindle his drive by exploring places others would only see in National Geographic - to entrench himself in their culture and stories while sharing them with the world. Mario spent 2 years trekking across Africa, an immersive experience that was more about the people than it was about the adventure. Now Mario searches for new places to travel to soak up moments and share with others. If you've ever wondered why you shouldn't live in fear and be brave enough to see the world, then this one's for you! Life in Motion is brought to you by Actual Outdoors. Follow explorer Mario Rigby on a 7,500-mile trek across the entire length of the African continent. Travelling on foot from Cape Town to Cairo, through South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt, Mario sought to understand the lives of African people better, to learn from them, sleeping where they slept, eating where they ate, living side-by-side, step-by-step. Born in the Turks & Caicos islands of the Caribbean, he also sought to learn about his roots and inspire other black men and women that though they may be shamefully under-represented in the outdoor and adventure industries, they too can be explorers. nnnBut it was more than that too. At the age 30, Mario found himself lost. He was living in Canada, unhappy with his job, uncertain of his future, uncertain how he could make a difference, how he could live a life of meaning and purpose. Then he remembered a hero from his childhood. Before T’Challa, otherwise known as the Black Panther, could become king he had to go on a journey, a ‘walkabout’ as he called it. He did this to learn how to be a better leader, a better person, to learn how to contribute to society and humanity as a whole. As a child Mario dreamed of doing the same thing, but as an adult he knew it was just a fairy tale. But what if it wasn’t? What if he too could go on a walkabout to learn about Africa, and himself, to change his life and start a new path? The way was unclear. He had no guarantees and very little money. He was daunted by the prospect. But nonetheless he plucked up the courage, flew to Cape Town, and began his own walkabout. In doing so, he would inspires all of us that anything is possible. He would inspire us that dreams don’t have to be fairy tales. Highlights include:· Hear the inspirational story of how Mario changed his life by setting out on a ‘walkabout’ in search of answers about himself and his place in the world· Find out how Mario became a Mozambique TV Star· Kayak with him nearly 400-miles across Lake Malawi, dodging crocodiles and hippos, camping out on remote villages, many of which had never seen a foreigner before· Walk among a troop of 1000 Gelada Baboons in the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia· Cross the deserts of Sudan, meeting the women who would later spark the revolution to overthrow the government, and the child refugees who were inspired by his story to find their own courage too· Discover what Mario learned, the answers he came too and how the journey changed his lifeGo and connect with Mario right now, his social media is awesome! This is a story about adventure, breaking the mould of expectation and learning how to navigate through fear - the fear of others and yourself. Mario was born in the Turks and Caicos Islands and moved to a small village near Stuttgart, Germany after turning 1. His memories of the first decade of his life included looking different to everyone else and embracing the outdoors. He returned to the Caribbean with his Mum and brother and a new set of challenges were created. This time he looked like everyone else, but his behaviours set him apart and it took sport to find a sense of belonging in a place he wanted to call home. With hard work and the sense of structure that was fostered in his early years of life, Mario became a talented track and field athlete, representing the Turks and Caicos Islands. We discuss the blending of the German and Caribbean cultures that fostered his skills, mindset and curiosity for high performance and exploration. We explore the role of the Black Panther in his journey and dive deep into his two year voyage where he covered the length of Africa from South to North... entirely by foot and kayak....That's 12,000 kilometers that would take him through South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. Preparation for the trip took nine months. He had to plan out his shelter and consider how to survive in any terrain, whether forest, desert or even mountains. Mario's training involved a 15 day hike from Toronto to Montreal - which also happened to be the first hiking experience of his life. When Mario encountered difficult physical and bureaucratic situations, it was the people of Africa who helped him maintain his spirit to continue the journey. This conversation looks at the flexibility of the mind that is required for feats of endurance in unfamiliar settings; why he loved Sudan so much, the partnership of an Italian stranger, being arrested in Malawi & handcuffed for three nights, being shot by rebel tribes in Mozambique, the come down post expedition and the importance of diversity in the outdoors and exploration. He had to plan out his shelter and consider how to survive in any terrain, whether forest, desert or even mountains. Mario's training involved a 15 day hike from Toronto to Montreal — which also happened to be the first hiking experience of his life. You can learn more about Mario via his website http://www.mariorigby.com/

In 2015, Mario Rigby left his Toronto life behind to walk and kayak across Africa. He had never been to Africa, he had no real trekking experience, and he had never kayaked. More than two years later, Mario had been through 8 countries, walked 12,000 kms and kayaked 550kms. While these feats are impressive on their own, Mario's awareness of himself, humanity, and all living things is the true discovery of this journey. Without any role models of black travellers and adventurers, Mario stresses the importance of his life as an explorer, and why the world needs to see more people out on the road, regardless of gender, culture or ethnicity. Tune in to learn more about Explorer, Mario Rigby. Original broadcast on CIUT 89.5FM and www.ciut.fm. FLY Travel Radio can be heard every Sunday at 1pm EST.
