There comes a time in a woman's life where she has to venture into the spiritual underworld. As she descends down into the darkness, with her spirit guide alongside her, she is shown the truth of her life and the meaning of her choices. It's a death of sorts. But she gets a second chance to choose again. In this episode, Jess reads from the book Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, a book that was on the New York Times Bestseller List for 148 weeks, while giving her own insights. This time she understands the value she holds as a feminine being, she is aware of who the predators are, and she understands the consequences of her choices. This time her eyes are wide open. The journey is arduous as it's a journey of endurance and a journey that a woman has to take on her own with only her spirit guide for comfort. This is where she will gain the courage to transform. Without this deep transformation, a woman will pay the price. Without transformation into her true feminine power and her true feminine value, once again she will see that the poor bargaining in her life, where she didn't understand what she was choosing, leads her to be the sacrifice again. Only this time the suffering will be more painful as she'll know that she is the sacrifice. As she awakens to realise that she was the sacrifice, this produces a river of never-ending tears and, with that, she descends even deeper into the spiritual underworld to receive the nourishment and healing for all the psychic rips and tears. This episode is for those women (and men) who have an innocent heart, a heart that is fully open and giving, and who possibly made agreements not fully realising what they were signing up to. In this dark and haunting episode, you'll realise that you are not alone on this journey and that this is the archetypal journey of the feminine. For those who are brave enough (or are pushed unwillingly) into descending into the spiritual underworld, this is a feast and brings true power to the vision you want to create for your life. Takeaways The predator and the naive woman archetype is prevalent in many women's lives. Endurance is not just about survival; it's about growth and strength. Women often make poor bargains that lead to loss of self. The loss of innocence is a necessary rite of passage for women. The flowering apple tree symbolizes the nurturing aspect of the feminine. Understanding one's value is crucial in relationships and life. The journey into the underworld is essential for self-discovery. Women must reclaim their sovereignty to thrive. The psyche's mill must be active for nourishment and creativity. The devil represents the dark forces that prey on the unaware. The desire for an easier life often leads to personal sacrifice. Awakening to the bargains made in life can be painful but necessary. Numbness often follows the realization of sacrifices made. Dismemberment symbolizes the loss of innocence and the beginning of transformation. The incubation period is crucial for self-discovery and healing. Rituals of protection can guide us through difficult times. Tears serve as a powerful healing mechanism for the psyche. The loss of psychic hands represents a disconnection from self-care and comfort. The silver axe symbolizes the necessity of cutting away the old to make way for the new. The journey into the underworld is essential for reclaiming one's power and femininity. — Honoring Ancestral Grief work is very subtle and profound, that takes place on a molecular level. It takes patience, devotion, compassion and an open heart to generate and embody these changes, until one day the process unfolds organically and naturally without utilizing immense reservoirs of effort. Some of the positive changes occur on the neuroplasticity level, which is the brain's ability to change through growth and reorganization. Some manifest as a deeper attuned nervous system and wider access to the information and sacred wisdom our bodies carries, a whole inner architecture that we get to know, our ancestry library. A big part of the work of processing the un-metabolized grief of our ancestors, is to grief for them, and by doing so, for us as well. Grief call us to life. There's an importance in embracing grief to help us find deeper meaning in the joy and vitality of life. Healing this grief may come through reconnecting with our forgotten lineage, allowing us to restore a foundation that may be missing, from which we can move more deeply into relationship with the wider world. The prayer is for the individual sovereign work we do, to ripple into our families, communities, eco-systems, lineages and the earth. What we liberate in ourselves, echos back infinitely and eternally, as a different quality of energy gets passed on to the next generations. A holistic, ancient, awaked, wise energy. One that witnesses the stories from a birds eye perspective, one that is generating the oceans of compassion and light hearted freedom. One that is expanding our map of consciousness, that is stretching the elasticity of our collective memory and presence. It is essential we support the accessing of our own inner wisdom, so that we may connect with the ancestor that we wish to become. Valeria interviews MayRav Nissim — She is an open hearted, warm and experienced therapist and space holder. Her work is informed by a wide range of healing modalities to help you restore, balance, and bloom. The northern star of her work is the important role the mind-body connection plays in healing and growth. Her practice is the interweaving of Psychotherapy, BioIntelligence, Neurobiology and Indigenous wisdom. Her certifications and continued areas of study include Internal Family Systems Level 3, Somatic Attachment Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Brainspotting, Sound Healing and an ever-present apprenticeship in Shamanic practices. MayRav views her work with clients as a shared, supportive and compassionate reminder of ways to reconnect with their most authentic self, while they integrate deep sustainable change. It is her intention to guide them to create a more rooted foundation in their body, mind, heart and soul, from which they may step into greater vitality, presence and wholeness. MayRav honors the knowing that our individual healing work eternally ripples within our homes, families, lineages and systems. She is passionate about breaking the cycles of historical and intergenerational trauma at the individual and community levels, and deeply believes in the healing power of coming together in community to witness and be witnessed, express, grief, renegotiate and reorganize. I think that I might have met my match. For the last few years I've been feeling as though I'm the person who talks the most about lost queer spaces, but journalist David Kennerley might actually be ahead of me. He loves queer nightlife so much that he's gone and written a whole book about the long-lost gay scene of '90s New York City. The book, Getting In: NYC Club Flyers from the Gay 1990s, includes flyers that he collected throughout the '90s from legendary spaces like the Palladium, Limelight, Splash, and Tunnel. But out of all of these lost spaces it was The Roxy that had his heart. We caught up to talk about his book, his early days in NYC, and his journey with his queerness. They dive deep into what it means to show up fully in relationships and life, even when it feels overwhelming.Jose opens up about the struggles men face when balancing the demands of relationships and personal growth, and how rites of passage can help cultivate resilience, emotional regulation, and a sense of purpose. They also riff on:•Jacob's raw confession about the anxieties of becoming a father•Why integrating emotions isn't just about intellectual understanding, but somatic practice•Jose's transformative journey from corporate burnout to embodied leadership•The dangers of bypassing embodied practices for intellectual solutions•The power of boundaries as acts of love•Finding clarity and power through rites of passage•The importance of checking in with yourself and owning your emotional state•Why “holding it all together” doesn't mean doing it allAnd so much more…
Send us a textIn our culture, we don't have any clear line, or event, or rite of passage for when a boy becomes a man. This leads to many boys struggling and trying to figure when, and how, they become men. A rite of passage is a powerful experience, from a young man and his father, that invites the boy into his journey of manhood. My guest today is Steven Arms, and he is a leading expert in this subject. In his book, Milestone to Manhood, Steven shares his firsthand experience of his own Rite of Passage weekend, and he reflects on how it shaped him into the man that he is today. His book also provides other men with the framework of how to hold their own Rite of Passage weekend for their sons. In today's episode, Meg and Jacob O'Neill dive into the ultimate rite of passage: preparing for the birth of their first child. As Meg approaches 38 weeks, they reflect on the emotional and physical journey of pregnancy and the intensity of the birth process. This isn't just a logistical challenge—it's a deep, spiritual initiation that's asking both of them to surrender to the unknown. With Jacob humorously navigating the "holy grail" of nursing chairs and Meg embodying trust in her body's wisdom, they explore what it really means to meet this moment with presence, humor, and raw authenticity. They riff off on:The surreal experience of waiting for their lives to change, with no fixed schedule for when the baby will arrive.Meg's powerful intention not to manifest a "perfect" birth, but to fully surrender to whatever comes. The deep trust they've developed with their birth keeper, Leslie, and how she nourishes Meg in ways she never knew she needed. The unexpected healing that's emerging for both of them, especially Jacob as he reflects on the masculine role in the birth process.and many more...If you're ready to hear the real, unfiltered truth about birth, surrender, and embracing every aspect of this intense rite of passage, this episode is for you.⚡ Loved this episode? Are you only successful if you achieve the goal you set out to do - and a failure if you don't accomplish it?Is success and failure that black and white - or is there a continuum? Can you still be successful even if you don't achieve your original goal?I've been giving this topic a lot of thought lately and have come to view success differently than I did just a few weeks ago.Have a listen and let me know what you think.Follow me on Instagram @barry_s_karch
This week on the Everything Actioncast, whoever wins, we lose because we're talking about 2004's AVP: Alien vs. Predator, which came out 20 years ago this week. There's also a new Alien movie, Alien: Romulus, in theaters right now.Directed by schlockmeister Paul WS Anderson, AVP: Alien vs Predator pits the two intergalactic entities against each other in an Antarctic pyramid discovered by Weyland Industries. The company's head, Charles Weyland (Lance Henriksen) wants to claim the structure in his name as one last grand action before he dies from a terminal disease and he assembles a team that includes scientists, drillers and Alexa Woods (Sanaa Lathan), an expert guide in arctic environments. The group explores the pyramid but soon finds themselves caught between the Xenomorphs and the Predators, with the pyramid being a training ground for young Predator warriors to prove themselves or die in a rite of passage. Zach and Chris discuss how there was over a decade of hype for this battle from the comics and games, the lack of any interesting kills thanks to the PG-13 rating, how the Antarctic environment doesn't affect anything, how quickly most of the Predators die, and more. You can watch AVP: Alien vs Predator on Hulu. Next week, we're talking about John Woo's action classic The Killer as the new version, also directed by Woo, hits Peacock. We want to hear your comments and feedback. Join host Therese Connolly LCSW, for an enlightening conversation with her son Casey who joins her to talk all about his experience at the Young Men's Ultimate Weekend run by Challenging Teenage Sons. It was a transformative rite of passage weekend that had a profound impact on their relationship and her son's personal growth. ⭐Tess discusses her initial hesitations, the preparation leading up to the weekend, and the impact it had on their relationship. ⭐Casey shares his perspective on the activities, challenges, and valuable skills he gained during the weekend. ⭐The episode highlights the importance of parent involvement, the emotional closure ceremony, and the positive changes observed in our communication post-event. ⭐Overall, the Young Men's Ultimate Weekend was a transformative experience that fostered growth, connection, and personal development for both Tess and her son Casey. ⭐Here are three key takeaways from this powerful episode: 1️⃣ Connection and Communication: Through this weekend, Casey and I experienced a significant improvement in our connection and communication. The experience allowed us to express our feelings better and truly understand each other. Our relationship has deepened, and we now communicate more openly and effectively. 2️⃣ Personal Growth and Challenges: The Young Men's Ultimate Weekend provided Casey with the opportunity to challenge himself physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He learned new skills, faced difficult tasks, and pushed himself out of his comfort zone. This experience of growth and overcoming challenges has had a lasting impact on his confidence and self-awareness. 3️⃣ Parental Involvement and Support: As a parent, being actively involved in the parent education portion of the weekend was invaluable. It reinforced the values and virtues we want to instill in our children and provided a deeper understanding of the experience. The closing ceremony, where parents and sons reconnect, was a powerful moment of recognition and growth for both parties. ⭐I highly recommend listening to this episode to learn more about the Young Men's Ultimate Weekend and the positive impact it can have on parent-child relationships.
