Museums are important spaces where the stories of people, culture, history, and our planet, are both preserved and shared. When you're traveling, they can give you important context about the region you're visiting. We're digging into museums with María Elena Ortiz, Curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. We chat about the history of museums, and we unpack the colonial undertones that they sometimes have. And of course, we'll talk about the role of museums in tourism. In Oaxaca, Mexico, there's a growing trend of Canadian snowbirds buying up beachfront land, being promised that these properties will be the perfect vacation home. The problem is, the land that is being developed is not up for grabs. It's communally owned by Indigenous and rural residents. Erin chats with Dawn Marie Paley, a journalist and author based in Mexico who covered this phenomenon in a piece for Breach Media, to unpack why this is able to happen, and how gentrification and tourism is impacting Mexico. Because lets be real, it sounds pretty colonial. Erin and Kattie also discuss some recent travel news around New York City's ban on Airbnb, and Egypt's new visa restrictions for Canadian travellers. We all have a responsibility to share our travels mindfully. This is because what we post on social media, write, or say about the places we visit, has the power to shape perceptions, maintain unfair stereotypes, and perpetuate colonial views. Thinking back to the flights you've taken in the last few years, how many times have you noticed a woman-identifying pilot boarding the plane, or making those in-flight announcements? According to 2020 data from the FAA's Aeronautical Center, about 7% of commercial airline pilots that year were women, and it's been reported that less than 1% of pilots in the US are Black women. Joi Schweitzer is part of that 1% and she joins the podcast to unpack the ins and outs of what it takes to become a pilot as a black woman and the state of represention in the skys. She also shares where her love of flying came from and what's ahead for the next generate of pilots. If you take a quick browse through travel media, you'll notice a lot of cliches like, "wild", "untouched", and "remote". These descriptions are commonly applied to places that are considered rural, and they might seem harmless. But often, these descriptions can play into misconceptions about places and usually lack the context behind why the places we visit are the way they are. What is responsible travel? Here on Alpaca My Bags, we've been unpacking this question for years, looking for tangible ways that we can be more responsible travelers. Sure, we can cut down on how much we fly, and book small, independently owned hotels… but these are all individual actions. Is it really fair to put the pressure on individual travelers to be responsible, when at the root, the real challenges in responsible tourism are systemic? On this season of Alpaca My Bags, we're unpacking whether responsible tourism could be a larger social movement. We'll talk about why it's problematic to romanticize rural destinations. We're exploring what happens when tourism gentrifies, whether or not it's ethical to visit zoos, and the true meaning behind common language used in the travel industry, like “bucket list”. Join us every other Wednesday for a new season Alpaca My Bags, and find out how to make travel better for people and the planet. --- HOW TO SUPPORT US: Alpaca My Bags is the Canadian podcast that explores making travel better for people and the planet. Global travelers still don't think much about Indigenous tourism when they think about travel to Canada. Post cards show Royal Canadian Mounted Police and maple syrup. But Canada has a long, rich, and diverse history that was shaped by the people who were here first: Canada's First Nations. We're talking to Keith Henry, President and CEO of the Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada (ITAC) to find out what economic reconciliation looks like for the travel industry. We discuss the impact of bringing back place names across the country, the importance of bloggers and travel influencers on Indigenous tourism, and get a sense of the demand for Indigenous knowledge across the sector, the country, and the world. In the opening, we discuss recent criticisms of AirBnB - from outrageous cleaning fees and long lists of chores, to its impact on housing crisis' - and share some hacks on how to avoid AirBnB all together. Digital nomads are on the rise, as more and more people embrace working remotely as a way to make seeing the world more accessible. According to data from MBO Partners, in 2019 there were 7.3 million Americans who identified as digital nomads. But in 2021, the number of American digital nomads surged up to 15.5 million. We're talking about all things digital nomadism with travel couple and writers, Michael Jensen and Brent Hartinger. They have been digital nomads for years, and write the fantastic newsletter called Brent and Michael are Going Places. We explore what the growing embrace of digital nomadism means for responsible tourism. We highlight the benefits of this travel style, and the potential negative impacts, too. GUESTS: Brent and Michael are a gay couple who decided in 2017 to sell their house in Seattle and travel the world as “digital nomads.” That means they move to a new country every few months, supporting ourselves by working remotely. In 2021, the internet reacted as the world's wealthiest men blew millions of dollars to spend just a few minutes traveling to the edge of space. Right now, space tourism is for the rich and famous, but in the coming years, it may become more accessible to regular travelers. We chat with space tourism journalist Valerie Stimac about what it's like to travel to space, the future of the space tourism industry, equity and representation in space, sustainability concerns, how much space travel will cost, and how to enjoy space from earth. GUEST: Valerie Stimac has lived across the globe but spent her formative years in Alaska admiring the northern lights each winter. After living in cities including Seattle, London, and the San Francisco Bay Area, Valerie re-discovered a childhood passion for space and combined it with her professional career as a travel writer. In the 1960s and 1970s young people from the UK, Europe, America and elsewhere, hopped on bus services or into their own converted vehicles, to travel from Europe to South Asia. This epic overland trip often lasted from several weeks to several months long. Along the overland route, travelers would gather in popular spots like Istanbul, Kathmandu, and Goa. In those days, the route was known as the “overland trail.” But today, many know it as the Hippie Trail. Today, we're exploring the history of the Hippie Trail. We discuss the rise of this popular overland route, whether it really was all "hippie" travelers, and, we talk with two people who were on the trail themselves: Kathryn (Katie) Lang Slattery and John de Figueiredo. There are just two northern white rhinos left in the world. Staggering rates of illegal hunting for its horn have led to its (almost certain) extinction in the wild. It's been feeling like the travel industry is slowly but surely coming back to life. But we can't help but feel a little cynical about this return to travel. The pandemic is still raging around the world, we're facing the growing consequences of a climate crisis, and we're continuing to grapple with inequity in our communities. It seems more important than ever to make sure that when we travel, we do it right. So where do we start? I'm Erin Hynes, travel writer and host of Alpaca My Bags - on this season of the podcast, I'm digging even deeper into what it really means to be a responsible traveler. With the help of my producer Kattie, we'll chat with thought leaders, activists, and passionate travelers - exploring questions like: How important is it to decenter yourself as a traveller? How will climate change impact tourism, and travel as we know it? And, is the era of Space Tourism here? And if so, is that something we even need? I am itching to book my next adventure, and I'm sure you are too. So, there's no better time to be having these conversations. Throughout the season, I'll share some of my own travel stories - and mishaps - with you. And along the way, we'll all learn how we can return to travel in a way that's better for us, and for the planet. So hit the subscribe button, because Season 4 of Alpaca My Bags, the responsible travel podcast, is coming this October, available everywhere you find your favourite podcasts. Grief is something that all of us will experience in life. Erin, host of Alpaca My Bags, has experienced grief several times in her life. Two of those times, the loss happened right before she was meant to travel. And somehow, traveling really helped her to heal. In this episode we're joined by Andrew Steven, the host of the new podcast Trail Weight. The show chronicles Andrew’s adventure of self-discovery as he hiked the John Muir Trail while grappling with the death of his mom. We discuss how travel impacts the experience of grief, travel guilt, and how immersing yourself in nature and new experiences can support your mental health. Traveling often means changes in our routines, unpredictable moments, new sights, new languages, and new sounds. While all of us are likely familiar with these challenges on some level, for autistic people, they can be especially tough. In this episode, we’re exploring how the Autism spectrum impacts travel. We're joined by Jenni, a California based photographer who was formally diagnosed with Autism in adulthood, and Nicole, who owns a travel agency that specializes in travel for neurodiverse people.PSA: You'll notice that in parts of this episode person-first language is used. Jenni explained that she, and many others in the autistic community, feel that identify-first language is more inclusive. Please listen critically. Being able to identify person-first language is super important if we’re going to get better at correcting it. SUPPORT US ON PATREON for as little as $5 a month!P.S.
