As a former world champion in triathlon, Kate Strong knows what it takes to be at the very top of her game. But she also knows what it feels like to fall back to zero, such is the fragility of competitive sports, and the reality of getting injured as an athlete. Starting again from the bottom with the bare minimum, Kate built herself back and aimed to be the first woman to set a world record for the greatest distance cycled on a static bike in 24 hours. And Kate not only rode an astonishing astonishing 433.1 miles in 24 hours, she also claimed the 12 hour and the 1 hour record at the same time, as well as making waves in showing what women in sport can do. Eager to continue using sport to make an impact on others, last summer Kate cycled 3,000 miles around Britain, connecting with 50 different communities, organisations & charities that positively impact climate change. She called it the Climate Cycle. In this conversation, we talk about what it takes to become a triathlon world champion, how Kate felt after being injured and having to start again from zero, how discovering the lack of female records in sport inspired Kate to take on the 24 hour cycle, and how her first failure inspired her eventual success. We talk about her Climate Cycle, how she deals with climate deniers, how the 'vegan' label can be quite limiting, and we talk about some of the places she visited on her epic 3,000 mile ride. He's swam the length of Britain. He's cycled across Europe. He's run the length of Britain. He's cycled from London to the Alps. He completed a 4,200 mile long Ironman.Another time, he cycled around the world. And, in perhaps his biggest and most recent challenge yet - and I've not even listed half of them - Sean broke the world record for the most consecutive Ironman triathlons in a row. He did an Ironman every single day for 105 days.I contextualise this in the interview with some actual figures, but that means Sean swam 2.4 miles. And then, after that swim, he cycled 112 miles. And then, after that cycle, he ran a marathon. He did that every day, for 105 days. I visited Sean in the beautiful rural North Wales - by myself and without my usual production support! - where he lives with his wife Caroline and their two young children. She up-cycles a lot of her materials when working on a project. We meet at her farm and she takes me on a walking tour of her seemingly endless work. From crazy quilts to doll making, beadwork, collages, painting, furniture rescue and restoration. She walks me through building after building and room after room filled with all of her projects. We talk about her deep passion for saving furniture from landfill and her support of youth and First Nations projects through sales of her art and furniture donations. We also have a very open and honest conversation about the work she does with high-school students. She shares mixed media collage art that are filled with symbolism of the pain and process faced by residential school survivors, her first-hand experience with her loss of culture and her own connection with her mother's experiences of residential school. It's a very moving and meaningful conversation that I was honoured to experience. It's part of the process, but to claim “recycled” content is more efficient is bogus. How would anyone know? FYI/tightening the money supply erodes the spending power of every American by making housing more expensive. The cost of housing is a component of the consumer price index (CPI) just like groceries & gasoline. It's no longer on our radar, but during WWII, Princess Elizabeth served her nation in the woman's army as a driver. I was privileged to have seen her on my first visit to England. It was “Remembrance Day” we arrived late to the wreath laying & were directed to Horse Guards Parade.  That's the back side of The Palace at White Hall we found a place on the kerb(sic) UK spelling here. Pretty soon we heard a band approaching from our right. It was the Coldstream Guards followed by veterans of 1st British Airborne (A Bridge too Far) & a convoy of vehicles led by a Rolls Royce bearing The Sovegens Standard. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

Composition by Stepfanie Anne. "The attendance recorder reminded me of the concept of "being present" in mindfulness practices. I sampled parts of the audio to transform into a pulse, a human body's own life clock. Part of being human is being aware of time and our own cycles. I sampled micro-parts and utilized audio effects such as delay and reverb. Some of the sounds were also reversed. All sounds used in this piece are from the original recording."  This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world's biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. Like many of us, David's life was touched by cancer when his sister June died of brain cancer. David wanted to find a unique way to honour his sister and raise funds for cancer care and research - the Cycle of Lives Project was born. David set himself the very bold goal of cycling over 8,000km across the United States from Los Angeles via Florida to New York in just over 6 weeks.Cycle of Lives project became about much more that fund raising though - David selected 15 people whose lives had been irrevocable changed by cancer either as a patient, a loved one, carer or doctor. He interviewed these people about the emotional chaos that comes with cancer and visited many of them as part of his epic ride across the country. David observed that many people are very good at talking about the tasks related to cancer such as how to navigate the health care system but when it came to having frank conversations about the emotions accompanying cancer, they were not as well equipped. He created a safe space for his 15 participants to share their poignant stories. David documented the Cycle of Lives bike ride and the stories that were shared with him in a book to help people open up the conversation about cancer. All funds raised from Cycle of Lives are donated to cancer charities nominated by the participants.DAVID RICHMANDavid Richman's website: https://david-richman.comCycle of Lives, the book: https://david-richman.com/cycle-of-lives/David's SM handle: @davidrichman_cycleoflivesLive Life Coaching facebook: https://www.facebook.com/livelifecoachingBook recommended by David: Writing Down the Bones by Natalie GoldbergHOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE PODCASTPlease tell your friends about the podcast and share it with them.Follow me on Instagram @vibrant_lives_podcastFollow my Facebook page: @vibrantlivespodcastIf you could rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts, that would be super helpful.Check out ways you can support the podcast on my website: https://vibrantlivespodcast.com/be-involved/

Jack Tame: How should we end the protest?

Saturday Morning with Jack Tame

I couldn't believe it!I finished up on my Saturday radio show, last week. Cycled home. Made some lunch. Refreshed the New Zealand Herald, and whaddaya know? It was like Trevor Mallard had been listening to us all morning. The Speaker of the House was blasting protestors with Barry Manilow and the Macarena. Unbelievable. Apparently I didn't make it clear enough in my editorial last week. I was JOKING when I suggested they hit protestors with silly music. I was joking. I never for a moment thought it would actually happen. For me, that's been one of the interesting little hypocrisies in this whole episode. On one hand, politicians wanted to take a moralistic high ground by refusing to meet with protestors. How dare anyone dignify them with a response?! Only the moralistic high ground apparently didn't apply to the Speaker, his sprinklers, and his irritating playlist.Trevor Mallard's efforts can only have served to antagonise the protestors. And every bit of scorn and hate hurled upon them only reinforces their self-image. The Team of Five Million? Ha. This rabble, confused, misled, and deluded as they may be, felt well and truly left out of the Team of Five Million. They joined together to protest precisely because they felt like outsiders. They felt ostracised. Very little from the last ten days will have changed their minds.Hindsight's 20/20. I think politicians should have found a way to reach out to the protestors much sooner. It probably wouldn't have done much to end the protest, but some of these people have been prepared to completely alienate themselves from friends and family and the majority of our society, to lose their jobs and livelihoods over their misguided beliefs. Refusing to meet them was hardly going to make them feel any worse.Yes, there were terrible, hateful, threatening messages. As far as I'm concerned, anyone making death threats should have been arrested immediately. But in this morass of different grievances and complaints are some very reasonable and articulate concerns around extraordinary state mandates. Personally, I don't know why any right-thinking person who was only protesting the mandates would choose to stay and be associated with someone making death threats. But the mandate issue is worthy of protest. I don't agree with the protestors, but they do have a right to be heard.I'm very aware that many of those who want to see the protestors rounded up and arrested, whatever it takes, are the same people who supported the Black Lives Matter protests during the Level 2 lockdowns. They were prepared to break Covid laws to protest Police brutality but are now advocating for a potentially brutal police response to a group breaking Covid laws. They're the same people who revelled in the ‘Team of Five Million' and ‘Kindness' messages, and the adoring international media coverage of New Zealand's Covid-19 response. Have they actually looked at the crowd? I wonder what the headline in the New York Times wouldbe if a couple of kids were hurt in an almighty scuffle between Police and protestors on the steps of parliament.I'm no tactician, but I wonder if the best way to manage the protest is to slowly pick away at it. Police should cordon all the nearby streets. They should stop all but authorised cars from entering the area. No one can bring in tents or sleeping bags. They should target the protest organisers and arrest them one-by-one. It may take days or weeks. As with most of our Covid response, the rights and wellbeing of the majority should be prioritised. The protest should not have been allowed to grow to this size and should not be allowed to continue. Fundamentally though, when comparing an ongoing protest to the alternative, I am not convinced a potentially violent clash between protestors and Police is better for New Zealand.

His book cycle of lives documents these stories and how we can be better prepared to have conversations with those affected with Cancer.
