Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland announced the signings today of Alex Chiasson, Mike Smith, Jujhar Khaira, Markus Granlund, Tomas Jurco, and Gaetan Haas, not exactly a huge haul on UFA day. Holland said he'd still like to get another Top 6 winger and a 3rd line centre, but said it wasn't time to splurge on July 1 UFA day: "I've been a manager for 22 years. I know when it's time to pay and when it's time not to pay."

Ray Ferraro says Nikolay Goldobin is clearly out of favour in Vancouver, and part of the reason is he doesn’t have a lot of utility/versatility in his game. Ray says Markus Granlund does offer some versatility, so that’s why Granlund stays in the lineup.

The Athletic's JD Burke says you can defend Travis Green using Brandon Sutter in overtime because he's someone who works sufficiently off the rush. But, JD can't understand why Markus Granlund is being used in overtime and is a favorite of Green because he's not sure what Granlund does well.

Ben Kuzma of the Province Sports suggests the Canucks would "go bananas" if Quinn Hughes was available at 7, and expresses some concern about the possibility of taking Adam Boqvist at 7. Ben discusses Markus Granlund's contract, and what the Canucks need in a goalie coach

Jason Botchford does not agree with Canucks GM Jim Benning combining both Markus Granlund and Sven Baertschi in the 'need to rebound' category. Benning has said both players need to take the next step or they could fall by the wayside. Botch says Baertschi was fine last year.

Ben Kuzma of the Province Sports suggests the Canucks simply need to look at Tuesday's opponent - Colorado - to see how quickly a poor season can be turned around. Ben needs to see which players push the pace and show up nightly during this stretch run, particularly Sven Baertschi and Markus Granlund

Jeff Paterson expects Alex Burmistrov to sit tonight in favour of Nikolay Goldobin, but also thinks Markus Granlund could use a wakeup call and wouldn't be surprised if the former 19-goal scorer sits out. Jeff figures back-to-back starts for Anders Nilsson is a huge opportunity for Nilsson to atone for a poor start vs Islanders

Ray says he wants to see growth and progress, and that's happening, but there are still major questions...including what kind of a player Markus Granlund will become

Canucks reporter Jeff Paterson says the team must use Brock Boeser in power-play situations, suggesting Boeser has the shot the team desperately needs. Jeff comments on the play of Jacob Markstrom and on Markus Granlund playing with the Sedins

TSN1040's Jon Abbott understands that Travis Green didn't play Markus Granlund with the Sedins during pre-season, instead having Granlund play down the middle. But, Abbott says unless Loui Eriksson or Thomas Vanek somehow catch fire, he feels Granlund is still the best fit with the twins and will be there eventually.

Ben Kuzma says the Canucks prefer Markus Granlund as a winger, but he expects to see a rotation of wingers including Sam Gagner and Nikolay Goldobin.

Canucks assistant coach Newell Brown says the Sedins are still “awesome power play guys” and suggests the Twins, along with Markus Granlund, Sven Baertschi, Bo Horvat should be able to produce at a better clip on the PP. Brown suggests using Brandon Sutter as a right-shot presence, and admits he needs to figure out which defenseman to use.
