A century after the city of Berlin banned swimming in the Spree River because it was so polluted, it could make people sick, there's a push by swimmers to get back into the water. Around 200 people jumped into the slow-moving, greenish water to show that it's not only clean enough, but also lots of fun to splash and swim in the Mitte neighborhood along the world-famous Museum Island. A group calling itself Fluss Bad Berlin, or River Pool Berlin, has been lobbying for years to open the meandering river for swimmers again. "For 100 years now, people have not been allowed to swim in the inner-city Spree and we no longer think this is justified, because we can show that the water quality is usually good enough to go swimming during the season," said Jan Edler, who is on the board of Fluss Bad Berlin and helped organize the swim-in. To circumvent the ban, the group registered their collective swim event as an official protest. Standing on a little staircase that leads down to the Spree canal, which flows around the southern side of the island, Edler stressed that "we want the people to use the Spree for recreation again." He pointed to the fact that the river has been cleaned up thoroughly, and that the water quality has improved in the last decade and is constantly being monitored. Even city officials in the central Mitte district of Berlin say they'd be interested in introducing river swimming again in 2026. "There are still many things that need to be clarified, but I am optimistic that it can succeed," district city councilor Ephraim Gothe told the German Press Agency recently. Supporters of lifting the swimming ban also point to Paris, where the Seine River was opened up for swimmers for the Olympic Games last year and will be opened this summer for Parisians. The Edmonton Oilers lost narrowly to the LA Kings last night at Rogers Place; however, that is not the story that is making the headline. Oilers star forward Connor McDavid took a knee-on-knee hit from Kings defenceman Alex Edler, who received a two-minute penalty on the player. When Zach Hyman was on the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edler did the same thing, which put Hyman out of the lineup for two months and received a two-game suspension. Despite having a history of this, the NHL player safety department today that the Kings defenceman would not receive more discipline for the collision. Newly acquired defenseman Troy Stecher joins Jesse Cohen and Zach Dooley on this episode of All The Kings Men. Stecher was acquired from the Red Wings in a deal at the Trade Deadline but played in Vancouver for four seasons, mostly alongside Alex Edler. Never once have I felt the need to change myself or be someone else around Amy, Tom, or Hailey. I've always been able to be authentically received by them. Who is your support team? Who are the people who know how to hold you (metaphorically and physically) when you're having a tough day? When you're experiencing shame? Not enough-ness? Guilt? Anger? Grief? It took me a long time to find these people and cultivate what we have, but here is a 3 Part Series with my support team and a peek behind the curtain into what our conversations look like (via phone because they all live outside MN). So many clients ask me: “How do I cultivate intimate friendships?” In a society wrought with fears and securities, it's so hard to trust anyone. It's hard to create a foundation of safety. Both parties need to be willing to take the risk and both parties need to be open and willing to hear how the other person wants to be loved. In this 3 Part Series, we talk to my 3 close friends — Tom, Amy, Hailey —  checking in about the state of our friendship. What's working? What's not? What's hard? What's easy? They are raw recordings containing laughter, vulnerability, compassion, and love. We are all showing up with a lot of trust in these interviews. I met Amy in college, so we discuss the early years of our friendship, getting to know each other, how we are both control freaks, how I tried to rescue Amy often in college (especially in her relationships). We'll discuss the areas in which we can step up our friendship and define what vulnerability and intimacy means for us in our friendship. We end with some sentiments and a conversation on trust. Jonathan Dahlen of the San Jose Sharks joined Matt and Blake. Talked about his rookie year. Says he just came into camp to make the team. He has been given a great opportunity and lots of ice time. Wasn’t really that confident that he would make the team. Just took it day by day and worked hard everyday. Fortunately it worked and he is trying to do the same things. Doesn’t see his success in Europe as a comparable to EP40 because they are different players. Talked about how well he knows Elias. Goes back to Timra and playing on a line there with each other. Played a lot together and it was a lot of fun. Says they FaceTime here and there. Met a couple times in the summer. Says they are good friends. Didn’t talk a lot about playing together with the Canucks when he was in Utica. He wasn’t playing well enough there. Will be awesome to be on the same ice sheet tomorrow. Had some low confidence in Utica. Talked about his dad, who played 1000 games in the league. Says it is awesome to have that influence and to be playing in the same organization as he did for 3.5 years. Talked about playing with Couture. He is such a good player and a great Captain. Talked about his hometown in Sweden where Edler is from too. His dad is also a big deal there. Darren Dreger joined Matt and Blake. Doesn’t know much about the Canucks that have tested positive. Doesn’t want to dive in. Charters that don’t take off peaks his interest, though. Talked about any overarching rules by the NHL as a maximum amount of players testing positive before they postpone games. Thinks that conference vs conference are very hard to make up, especially with three week olympic break. Says that it is dependent on the spread within the room and what can be managed. The NHL pays closer attention when teams spread to other teams. Talked about what he knows about Derek Clancey. Says that Jim Rutherford is a guy that gets ahead of problems. Recognizes things then acts. He needs guys that can hit the ground running and Clancey is that guy. Our Canucks reporter, Jeff Paterson joined in his regular spot. Started off by talking about the surge in Covid cases amongst the Canucks. Wonders about the status of the next game, in San Jose. Talked about the game vs the Blue Jackets. Thinks the team has gotten the bounces with who has tested positive. As this goes deeper, it will affect more important players. Talked about the Canucks hiring an AGM before a GM. Talked about the potential of Boudreau winning the Jack Adams.
