Prolific British-Canadian marathon runner, author and now documentary maker Martin Parnell, along with filmmaker Kate McKenzie, have made an inspiring and visually stunning film about Afghan women taking great risks to run in the Marathon of Afghanistan. The Secret Marathon is inspired by the story of 25-year-old Zainab, the first Afghan woman to run in Afghanistan's first official marathan in 2015, held in Bamiyan. It tells the story of the other brave women who have followed in her footsteps to stand up for equality. Martin wants to keep the plight of Afghani women in the spot-light, so the film is being re-released around the world as a fund-raiser for Afghan refugees. Martin joins Kathryn Ryan ahead of The Secret Marathon's screening https://tickets.demand.film/event/11666 in Wellington tonight at 6:30 PM at the Roxy Cinema. $5 of every ticket sale is being donated to ChangeMakers Wellington to help recent Afghan refugees resettle.

Martin Parnell is a father, husband, grandfather, son, and brother. In 2001, Martin lost his wife Wendy to cancer. Almost a year later, his brothers challenged him to run a marathon. As a highly competitive trio they decided to take it on. He strapped on his running shoes and quickly discovered how hard a challenge like this might be. He was 47 years old. Little did he know that after he completed that first marathon in Calgary, he would go on to compete in countless other marathons, triathlons, Iron Mans and ultra-marathons. He challenged himself to the grueling Tour d'Afrique which is a roughly 11,000km supported bike race from Cairo to Cape Town. While traveling through some of Africa's poorest countries he observed how the children were momentarily lifted out of their circumstances as they played a pick-up game of soccer and other sports. When he returned, he conceived of a fundraising initiative for Right to Play, a global charitable organization that uses the power of sport and play to educate children who are facing adversity, poverty and conflict. He proposed to run 250 marathons in 2010 and raise $250, 000. On December 31st he achieved his goal of 250 marathons and raised roughly 330, 000 dollars forhttps://www.righttoplay.ca/en-ca/ ( Right to Play). It was a Guiness World Record. That propelled him to achieve 5 more Guiness World records by 2014 and raising at total of 1.3 million dollars for Right to Play. In 2015 a blot clot on his brain put him in hospital. He had to learn to walk and speak again. While in hospital, he read the story of Zubrah, a young Afghan woman who ran and won the first https://www.marathonofafghanistan.com/ (Secret Marathon )for women organized by https://freetorun.org/ (Free to Run). Always needing a goal, he promised himself that if he could get himself healthy again, he would participate in the second Secret Marathon. There are more twists and turns to this story and it continues… Social Links for Martin Parnell: Website:http://martinparnell.com/ ( http://www.martinparnell.com) LinkedIn: @martinparnell Facebook: @MarathonQuest250 YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/user/martinjparnell ( martinjparnell) _____________________________ Free to Run: https://freetorun.org/ (https://freetorun.org/) Right to Play: https://www.righttoplay.ca/en-ca/ (https://www.righttoplay.ca/en-ca/) Secret Marathon film & book: https://thesecretmarathon.com/ (https://thesecretmarathon.com/) Secret Marathon 3k run/walk: https://thesecretmarathon.com/secret3k (https://thesecretmarathon.com/secret3k) Terry Fox: https://terryfox.org/ (https://terryfox.org/) This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Chartable - https://chartable.com/privacy

Her story also inspired legendary Cochrane marathon runner, Martin Parnell, to imagine what his life might be like if his gender prevented him from going outside to run. Martin vowed to run in the Marathon of Afghanistan to support Zainab. Alberta filmmaker and first time marathoner, Kate McKenzie, joined the run, and she also made a documentary along the way. John chats with the ageless Martin Parnell who has done numerous marathons, triathlons and ultra-marathons and set four Guinness World Records along the way.
Despite never having run before in any serious athletic capacity, when his brother asked him to run a marathon with him, it was a challenge he couldn't refuse. He didn't know it at the time, but running would lead him to help elevate the lives of men, women and children all over the world. Having written three books, “Marathon Quest”, “Running to the Edge”, and “The Secret Marathon”, and holding multiple Guinness World Records, Martin is an expert on running and the mental and physical challenges that go along with it, but his story is about more than that. It's an incredible chronicle about following your heart, figuring out your passion, and finding yourself along the journey. In this episode: The Challenge (1:00). The big event… an inauspicious start (4:35). The mental part of running (6:02). Searching for gifts in the midst of turbulent times (7:41). Pivoting to find your passion (12:50). Changing lives through sport (14:27). What happens after you have accomplished the seemingly impossible? (19:22). A new quest! Oh, and setting a Guinness World Record or two along the way (22:25). Defining fear and failure (24:42). And then… everything was flipped on its head (26:48). Supporting women and their right to run (32:07). Passing the baton (40:15). What's holding you back? (45:37). What can you do if you're in a rut? (47:19). What's next? (54:44). Martin Parnell an Englishman living in Canada ran 250 marathons in a year, and in doing so ran himself into the Guinness Book of Records. In 2002, at the age of 47, he started running, completing marathons, triathlons, ultra-marathons and setting four Guinness World Records along the way. This is a terrific story of a guy who found his why and set about achieving a true purpose. It's a story of determination, ambition, resilience, service, compassion and love. Here's what we discuss with Martin in this show: When people ask Martin what he does, how does he like to reply? Of all of his running achievements, which event or run is his proudest moment? Martin was a tubby kid; how did he have to change his identity to become a runner? What is his message to his granddaughter Autumn? What impact do the kids of his charity - Right To Play - have on Martin performance? Does Martin use running as a platform to be able to help others? Martin thrives on long boring things, that is very different from how society operates. What is the mindset he takes to his activities? Where do his resilience and grit come from? When Martin runs, does he listen to a soundtrack, podcast, or is it just quiet? Martin has a running formula 9 + 1, 9 mins running 1 min walk, and he lives life 10 mins at a time. Martin talks about a dark moment in his running career and how did he deal with it? In 2015 in Winnipeg, Martin was feeling sick at a speaking engagement; it was a blood clot. We go to that night. The conversation Martin had with himself when he heard the news he had a blood clot and a very long road to recovery? How does an extreme athlete face an extreme personal event?
