Are you navigating perimenopause or menopause while also managing chronic health conditions? Or perhaps perimenopause has triggered an underlying, previously dormant issue? Traditional healthcare may not be enough to combat the symptoms, but do not fear! Today's guest is here to teach us how your nervous system, immune system, and hormones can all work together to support healing and longevity. This week, host Jenn Trepeck is joined by Dr. Jessica Drummond, Founder and CEO of The Integrative Women's Health Institute. Together, they explore how seemingly “silent” chronic conditions like endometriosis, pelvic pain, autoimmune disorders or even long covid, can complicate menopause—and what you can do about it. Dr. Drummond shares her insights on calming the nervous system, building metabolic health through nutrient-dense habits, and using tools like heart rate variability (HRV) to guide recovery. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, who discusses wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: (00:00) The impact of menopause on silent chronic conditions(05:44) Dr. Jessica Drummond reflects on her professional journey in the chronic condition space(11:11) Common underlying chronic conditions affecting menopause(16:08) Discussion of the silent underlying conditions that can manifest later in life(25:43) Calming the nervous system to heal in a consistent way(30:50) The importance of your metabolic health in the form of nutrient-dense food, strength training, walking, hydration and circadian rhythm(32:09) Discussion of heart rate variability, recovery, and developing the art of sitting quietly(41:36) The importance of working with a health coach to plan for the future of your healthKEY TAKEAWAYS:Menopause and perimenopause symptoms can be overwhelming on their own. Still, when layered on top of chronic conditions like endometriosis, pelvic pain, autoimmune disorders, or post-viral syndromes (e.g., long COVID), it creates a compounded health challenge. Traditional training often overlooks the role of nutrition, nervous system regulation, and lifestyle in healing. Chronic conditions—especially during perimenopause—require a personalized, holistic strategy.Healing during menopause doesn't require drastic changes—small, consistent steps matter most. Start where it feels easiest, like mindfulness, nutrition, or gentle movement. Recovery and nervous system regulation are just as important as action. Tools like heart rate variability (HRV) can help track progress, showing that true resilience comes from balancing effort with rest.Integrating the nervous, immune, and hormone systems is the key to living a longer, more active, healthier life. When these systems are balanced and working together, they support overall well-being and longevity.QUOTES:         (10:04) “In my traditional physical therapy training, nutrition was not emphasized as a healing tool. It was more like you needed adequate nutrients to perform certain physical activities, but we didn't think about it from an anti-inflammatory standpoint.” - Dr. Jessica Drummond(13:59) “Research shows us that acute illnesses like infections trigger chronic diseases.” - Dr. Jessica Drummond(22:36) “It's exposing these underlying things that have been lying dormant, that we just brushed aside or pushed through because they weren't really standing in the way of us doing the things that we wanted to do.”  - Jenn Trepeck(40:19) “I think we make these plans expecting perfection, planning for this optimal, ideal day that never happens. So put these things in place so they happen even on the days where we don't feel a hundred percent, even on the days where nothing goes as planned.” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramUse Your Heart Rate Monitor to Improve Your Health                GUEST RESOURCES:The Integrative Women's Health InstituteIntegrative Women's Health  - Podcast Integrative Women's Health - PubMedInnovative Approaches to Chronic Pain with The Anodunos Method TeamGUEST BIOGRAPHY:Dr. Jessica Drummond, DCN, CNS, PT, NBC-HWC, is a leading expert in women's health and the Founder and CEO of The Integrative Women's Health Institute. Have you ever wondered why medical labels and conventional treatments often leave you feeling caught in an endless cycle of symptoms? In this thought-provoking session of Sunday Night Live, Dr. Thomas Lodi challenges the medical establishment's approach to chronic disease and offers empowering alternatives rooted in natural physiology.Dr. Lodi takes us on a journey through the fundamentals of health restoration, explaining why terms like "triple negative" cancer or "bacterial infection" often miss the deeper truth about what's happening in our bodies. With refreshing clarity, he demonstrates how conventional medicine focuses on comparing different treatments to each other rather than studying the outcomes of those who choose lifestyle-based approaches instead. At the heart of Dr. Lodi's message is a profound truth: our bodies know how to heal when given the right conditions. Whether addressing pregnancy-related UTIs, chronic inflammatory conditions, or cancer diagnoses, the path forward involves similar principles – cleansing the body of toxins, addressing dental issues that compromise immunity, providing optimal nutrition through uncooked plant foods, and supporting natural detoxification pathways. The session reveals fascinating research showing how raw vegan diets dramatically reduce inflammation markers to undetectable levels and how parasitic infections may play a significant role in chronic disease. Dr. Lodi also shares insights about cutting-edge treatments like Valasta, which targets chronically fermenting cells by utilizing their increased glucose uptake against them.Perhaps most compelling is Dr. Lodi's challenge to conventional thinking about immunity. By questioning our dependence on vaccines and pharmaceutical interventions, he reminds us that humanity built great civilizations long before modern meSend us a text Join Dr. Lodi's Inner Circle membership and unlock exclusive access to webinars, healthy recipes, e-books, educational videos, live Zoom Q&A sessions with Dr. Lodi, plus fresh content every month. Nathan Jones, the CEO of Xlear, global leader in creating natural, convenient, xylitol-based sinus and oral care products that support a healthy lifestyle.   Nathan was born in Kansas City and he spent his formative years in Idaho, in a small town where his father was the town doctor. Later, in a pursuit to provide needed support for the entire family of 14 kids, Nathan's parents made the decision to move to Michigan, and then Mexico City. When he was 16 years old, the family made another move, this time to Utah which is also where Nathan graduated from high school.   He attended college for a year, spent a year in active duty, and also went on a two-year mission with his church. Nathan moved back home in 1994 and started attending Utah Valley University. Later, he made a transition to Seattle where he attended school to become a commercial diver – he used skills from this education when he worked as a diver in oilfields in Louisiana between 1995 and 2000. Nathan then returned to Utah and founded Xlear in order to improve lives by spreading the message of Proactive Health.   Website: https://xlear.com/   Work With Me: Mineral Balancing HTMA Consultation: https://www.integrativethoughts.com/category/all-products  My Instagram: @integrativematt My Website: Integrativethoughts.com   Advertisements:   Viva Rays: Use Code ITP for a Discount https://vivarays.com/   Zeolite Labs Zeocharge: Use Code ITP for 10% off https://www.zeolitelabs.com/product-page/zeocharge?ref=ITP Magnesium Breakthrough: Use Code integrativethoughts10 for 10% OFF https://bioptimizers.com/shop/products/magnesium-breakthrough Just Thrive: Use Code ITP15 for 15% off https://justthrivehealth.com/discount/ITP15 Therasage: Use Code Coffman10 for 10% off https://www.therasage.com/discount/COFFMAN10?rfsn=6763480.4aed7f&utm_source=refersion&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=6763480.4aed7f   Chapters: 00:00 Introduction and Background 04:53 Understanding Xylitol and Its Origins 09:56 Fluoride vs. Xylitol: A Dental Debate 14:59 The Role of Xylitol in Oral Health 19:57 Nasal Hygiene and Mold Treatment 24:52 The Connection Between Oral Health and Systemic Illness 29:56 Xylitol's Impact on Maternal Health 34:59 Conclusion and Future Directions 37:06 Alternative Treatments and Protocols 39:28 The Role of Nasal Hygiene 43:11 Challenges with Regulatory Agencies 46:30 Historical Perspectives on Hygiene 54:58 Practical Applications of Nasal Hygiene Products   Takeaways: Xylitol is a natural sugar that helps prevent tooth decay. Fluoride's effectiveness in preventing tooth decay has significantly decreased over the years. Xylitol can reduce the incidence of respiratory infections. Maintaining a healthy oral microbiome is crucial for overall health. Nasal hygiene is important for preventing mold-related illnesses. Xylitol can help reduce preterm births by improving gut health. The dental industry often overlooks the bacterial causes of tooth decay. Xylitol can remineralize teeth when the mouth is at a neutral pH. Public health initiatives should promote xylitol for children's dental health. Xylitol's effectiveness is supported by numerous studies. The CDC had knowledge on how to treat COVID-19 early on. Saline irrigation was a recommended treatment for respiratory infections. Alternative treatments like xylitol and nasal hygiene can be effective. Regulatory agencies often hinder the sharing of beneficial health data. Historical figures in medicine faced ridicule for advocating hygiene practices. Nasal hygiene is crucial for preventing respiratory infections. Public health agencies need to improve their communication strategies. The effectiveness of treatments can be overshadowed by regulatory concerns. Education on hygiene practices is essential for public health. Innovative health solutions often face resistance from established institutions.   Summary: In this conversation, Matthew Coffman and Nate discuss the health benefits of xylitol, particularly in oral hygiene and nasal care. Nate shares his background in the health space, influenced by his father's research on xylitol's effectiveness against bacteria and viruses. They delve into the debate between fluoride and xylitol, highlighting the limitations of fluoride in addressing the root causes of tooth decay. The discussion also covers the importance of nasal hygiene, especially in relation to mold exposure, and the systemic health implications of oral health. They conclude with insights on xylitol's potential benefits for maternal health and the need for better public health initiatives. In this conversation, Matthew Coffman and Nate discuss the CDC's response to COVID-19, highlighting alternative treatments and the importance of nasal hygiene. They delve into the challenges posed by regulatory agencies like the FTC, and reflect on historical perspectives regarding hygiene practices in medicine. Back when I was running my solo physical therapy practice, ProActive Health, my mission and ultimate goal was to advocate for individuals to be, well, proactive in their approach to health versus reactive. Of course, it is much easier — both time- and energy-wise, as well as financially —  to prevent injuries and illnesses from occurring compared to falling prey to and enduring a long, drawn out course of treatment that can sometimes be, if bad enough, in perpetuity. In my mind, preventative medicine is undoubtedly the future of healthcare for a multitude of reasons and today's guest, Dr. Ron Primas, has been pioneering this model for decades  — putting him well ahead of the curve, especially under the allopathic paradigm. Dr. Primas is a board-certified physician with over 30 years of experience in assisting New York City residents and travelers with their health needs. Educated via the traditional allopathic medical system, he has broken out of that archetype to become the proverbial biohacker before biohacking was formalized and has a long-standing passion for longevity well before that was trendy. As a longevity expert, Dr. Primas helps his patients to maximize their biological age with regenerative medicine and a longevity routine that supports their unique personalized health history and goals. In today's conversation, we cover a smorgasbord of topics ranging from chronic pain management to holistic weight management to, of course, biohacking and longevity to red light therapy to diet, supplements and more! Dr. Primas is an absolute wealth of knowledge and not just because he is one smart cookie, but, more importantly, he can speak from decades and decades of personal and professional experience. You can never garner wisdom without real-life experience and Dr. Primas has that in spades.   As always, learn lots and light up your health! - Key points: Guest Introduction (00:00:00 - 00:00:22): Guest: Dr. Ron Primas, board-certified physician with 30+ years of experience and a fellow biohacker. What if everything you thought you knew about happiness was wrong? Follow the journey of a former private equity professional who discovered the shocking truth behind proactive health and how to truly find meaning in life. But, as he navigates this new path, he's faced with difficult questions and challenges that leave him with no easy answers. In this episode, Pete and Ted discuss:  Recognizing the significance of proactive health measures and the benefits of acting preventatively. The difficulties in establishing incentives that encourage healthier ways of living. Grassroots initiatives focused on nurturing wholesome habits within communities. The connection between mental health, sleep, and relationship-building in cultivating proactive well-being. Cultural and policy hurdles that impede lifestyle changes for better health. Teddy Daiell helps CEOs and investors with buy-side deal sourcing, growth strategy, and strategic finance. After honing his strategy and private equity expertise at Bain, Charlesbank, and Wharton's MBA, Teddy has advised more than 40 Proactive Health companies like Precision Nutrition (Health Education), MDVIP (Preventive Primary Care), True Food Kitchen (Nutrition), Talkspace (Mental Health), and Wellbeats (Exercise). Daiell is now on a mission to tackle the cultural and policy barriers to proactive health. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Teddy had a successful career, but he realized early on that he wasn't really fulfilled. His unique background and passion for promoting healthier lifestyles make him an insightful guest on this important topic. Basic Nutrition Education One of the core components of promoting proactive health is basic nutrition education. By providing individuals with access to accurate and actionable information about the food they consume, they can make better-informed decisions about their well-being. This should be accessible to people of all demographics, as it can have a profound impact on the overall health of communities. Daiell highlights the value of basic nutrition education and how offering weekly sessions on nutrition and behavior change can have a significant impact on individuals and their families. By equipping people with the knowledge necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle, they are more likely to make informed choices and prioritize their well-being in a sustainable manner. Opportunities for Impactful Proactive Health Many opportunities exist for impacting proactive health, from mental health to sleep and relationship building. Addressing each of these areas through targeted interventions, incentives, and education can lead to a more comprehensive and effective approach to improving overall health and wellness. By focusing on these, healthcare professionals can devise strategies that cater to individual needs and foster sustainable change. Ted is bullish about the potential for impact in these areas of proactive health. He stresses the need for personalized wellness solutions in mental health, optimizing environmental factors for sleep, and adopting preventative relationship coaching. Daiell advocates for a more holistic approach to proactive health, where individuals, businesses, and healthcare systems work together to prevent illness, incentivize healthy behaviors, and promote a better quality of life for all. Current Ecosystem of Healthcare Examining the existing healthcare ecosystem is vital when discussing proactive health. Understanding the numerous economic factors and stakeholders involved can help healthcare practitioners identify areas of potential improvement to further drive the adoption of healthy lifestyle choices. Unfortunately, challenges arise as the capitalistic nature of the system often rewards short-term gains over long-term health improvements, leading to a bias against proactive health measures. It is often difficult to create a business model around proactive health, especially since established players, like health insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry, have significant monetary incentives to maintain the status quo. Daiell and Moore suggest that finding ways to monetize the health benefits of proactive health could motivate customers to adopt a healthier lifestyle and reduce the need for costly medical interventions.
