My very special guest today is Singer & Songwriter, Emily Halpern. I regard these two things in life as highly valuable. The Gift of Laughter - I can never repay the gift of the laughter that someone shared with me. The Gift of Music I can never repay a music artist for the gift of their music, and how it makes me feel. I can never fully explain to them how life wouldn't be nearly as sweet for living without the gift of their music. Theses are gifts that I can never repay in full. I was aware of Emily Halpern's writing years before I knew who she was or had met her. Her words had made me laugh, so many countless nights watching Black-Ish, of which she was a writer and Producer from 2016 - 2017. And who could forget “Booksmart” Directed by Olivia Wilde written by Emily Halpern, Susan Vogel, Sarah Haskins and Katie Silberman? Those laughs made my cheeks sting pink. Booksmart laughs were guilty pleasure laughs for sure. I was introduced to her when I created a “Love Letter to Luqcues”. Lucques was the infamous restaurant in LA owned by Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne, and operated by General Manager Matt Duggan. It had closed during covid, for good. I was looking for love stories on the patrons of Lucques. Matt Duggan said that I should speak to Emily Halpern, a screenwriter. And when I did, Emily Halpern had one of the sweetest love stories of all. You see, Emily had her second date with her husband Evan at Lucques, tucked away in a corner table in the bar. The way Emily tells it, They both knew they had found each other's soulmate that night. They had their wedding at Lucques. And, Their first born daughter Franny just missed her very first Sunday Super at Lucques before the Pandemic shut everything down. Instagram - I see a post by Emily, welcoming her first-born EP album to the world. It's titled “Carry Me Home.” She recently released a single “Hey Buddy” which we are playing here in it's entirety at the end of the show. She is currently at work on a second EP to be released next year. ‘We are all delivering products and services in a noisy and busy marketplace so what is the reason someone will buy from you, what is your added value?  Gavin is in conversation with Kelly Teasdale from ‘Market my Product’ Kelly is a Marketing Expert who uses her expertise and knowledge from the corporate world to teach entrepreneurs how to effectively market and grow a business.  Kelly shares practical tips and advice about how you can begin to develop a marketing strategy that will work for your business, listen in to find out how.     KEY TAKEAWAYS  What really helps you grow a business are strategy, content and value.  There are 4 common key mistakes:  Shiny new toy syndrome – people look for the one ‘magic something’ that is going to make their business successful.  Operating only at a tactical level- it’s the back to front way of marketing. No two marketing plans should look the same and an overview of the journey you are on is vital.  The copy me syndrome – copying other businesses, you must communicate what is different about you and choose tactics that are right for your business, at this point because of where your target audience is.  Content creation – business owners create content then do not use it. Using a content planning model enables you to repurpose content effectively.  A marketing strategy is based on where you are, what you want to sell, who your target audience is, what your competitors are doing, where you want to get to, and how you are going to navigate to reach that point.  A SWOT analysis can provide clarity when developing a marketing strategy. The strengths and weakness are internal to the business including elements such as resources and personal skill sets. Opportunities and threats are external to the business and include aspects such as competition in the marketplace.  Creating a customer-centric business, revolving your business genuinely around your customer needs from product development onwards means the business is very close to its target audience.  If you are serious about growth then staying close to your target audience is key. They are going to give you all the information you need to help develop and grow successfully.  Successful businesses all share an understanding of  key elements; content creation, the power of PR, digital marketing, analytics, customer centricity, creativity, strategy and operational planning.  When you have a strategy in place and before you commence with any marketing list your key messages, it’s important that others know what you are doing and what your marketing message is.  The minute you start making the right tactical choices everything changes and with a clear strategy the overwhelm of marketing disappears.     BEST MOMENTS  ‘In a crowded noisy world, people want something that speaks specifically to them’  ‘Lots of small businesses are passion led and with this sometimes comes tunnel vision’  ‘The smartest people win by  facing the reality and then being  strategic about how they  get through the noisy marketplace to reach their goals’  ‘Where are you on that journey and what is right for your business tactically at that time?’     VALUABLE RESOURCES  Kelly Teasdale Website  Market My Product Website, 7 Marketing Superpowers Quiz            ABOUT THE GUEST  Kelly Teasdale   Kelly is an award-winning global marketing expert, business growth coach and speaker.  Over the last 17 years, Kelly has worked with multi-national corporate organisations, FTSE 250 companies and global megabrands, including Coca-Cola, GSK Consumer Health, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca and The Walgreens Boots Alliance, as well as thousands of small and medium-sized businesses, to accelerate their growth.  After graduating from Cardiff University with a First-Class Honours Degree in English Literature, an MA in English Literature and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Relations, Kelly first began her marketing career in London.  Throughout her career, she has worked in prominent global marketing agencies in London, Barcelona, Brussels, Paris and New York and has consulted for some of the world’s best brands and businesses, including well-loved UK brands, such as The Hairy Bikers.   In 2013, Kelly became accredited in digital marketing and soon after,   started working more closely with SMEs - applying big business thinking and techniques to small businesses and start-ups, making her one of the most renowned small business marketing coaches in the UK.  In 2017, Kelly co-founded Marketing Saturday Live, Your Marketing Live and The Business Marketing Mastermind alongside social media expert, Matt Duggan. Together, Kelly and Matt work to make marketing accessible for small business owners in a jargon-free, honest, practical and super supportive environment.  Kelly still consults for large global organisations and has been honoured to speak at business events worldwide.   She has also been the recipient of several prestigious industry awards, including Top 29 Under 29 (PR Week), Young Achiever of the Year (Communique) and the Gold Quill Award for International Communications (IABC).     ABOUT THE HOST  Gavin Preston  Gavin is an inspirational Speaker, Business Strategist, Business Growth Mentor, Trainer and high-performance Coach.  He works with Business Owners and Entrepreneurs and has a strong track record in creating creative strategies to accelerate the growth of their business. Own It! For Entrepreneurs. Talking Digital Marketing, Small Business, Being Digital Nomads and Success Thinking

Do you have a Mental Model which helps you with better decision-making and clearer thinking leading to appropriate action? Today, Nicola Cairncross and Judith Morgan introduce a choice of Mental Models, one of which will be right for you, your business and your life.  In the Show The beach has been bulldozed in Stoupa which means it is officially Summer. Nicola’s been offered superfast broadband and her 30 Day Challenge has converted well to paying clients. Judith’s found a helpful holistic, Helen, who has contributed (along with kefir and vitamin C) to her feeling like a new woman. She was also hot for the first time in April. There’s talk of intrepid folks Hal and Linda, and Lisa and Glenn, and more on the Women’s Equality Party. What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Both Nicola and Judith have been delighted by their respective clients having great experiences, doing good work, paying promptly and generously, and providing top reviews on Facebook and Amazon. There is nothing like the feeling of being a good match for your client (and vice versa) and both parties being amply rewarded in every sense. Focus of the Week Nicola gives the listeners and Judith a rundown of various mental models including the Law of Attraction (which takes J by surprise that Nicola would include it), and those offered by such luminaries as Gary Vee, James Schramko, Eli Goldratt and Stephen Covey. Judith and Nicola discuss the 80/20 rule (the Pareto Principle), the Kaizen theory of continuous improvement, focusing on finding, repairing and improving the weakest link (Theory of Constraints), being able to distinguish between urgent and important, deathbed decisions and more. They realise the important thing is not just to discover and study these mental models but pick one as your own and use it as often as necessary. Nicola shares a video on YouTube that demonstrates one of her favourites, the Post-it Note exercise at 1:09 of the video https://youtu.be/SmOMX511rTs Words of the Week Judith picks Wisdom and Nicola picks Smart. Project Updates Nicola’s got a new website for the Clicks & Leads Academy thanks to her sister, Sarah and she’s back using Facebook Ads. She updates Judith on the much bigger download numbers the podcast is achieving now that the show is being distributed via Radio Public. Judith is happy to share with Nicola that she’s achieved her first book sale via Amazon’s Expanded Distribution, she explains what this is and what it could mean for her book, Your Biz Your Way. Who or What’s Impressed? Nicola’s impressed by Matt Duggan and Russell Brand, and Judith by Amazon Prime’s Harry Bosch 4. Thanks for listening! Matt Duggan, general manager for LA's Lucques, shares this primer on tasting spirits. Do not swirl, swish, or suck in air (this isn't wine), because all you'll taste is alcohol. Instead, take one sip to get past the initial shock and burn of the alcohol. Let the next sip sit on your palate so you can really appreciate the flavor.

Matt Duggan, general manager for LA's Lucques, thinks that people have it all wrong when they inhale deeply from a glass of spirits right after it's been poured. He suggests blowing a quick puff of air into the glass to get rid of the alcohol smell and release the liquor's true aromatics.
