This was one of my favorite conversations over the last year or so. Figured it'd be nice to share it again...   We are joined in this episode by Writer, Producer, Actor and Mentor, LARRY WILMORE! We discussed what drew Larry to comedy, writing, acting and producing; and, yes, we did talk about the WGA strike; why, as a kid, he was compelled by the work of such greats as Houdini, Buster Keaton, the Marx Brothers and Flip Wilson; rebounding from professional setbacks and keeping a healthy mindset; his thoughts on the "TP&R question" - how to be better at talking about politics and religion across our differences; and we got pretty deep with the concept of consciousness, meaning and why humans have a desire to have a life of meaning.   Emmy Award winner Larry Wilmore is a prolific producer, actor, comedian, and writer. He is also the host of the excellent podcast Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air. Larry is perhaps best known for his role as host of Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and as the “Senior Black Correspondent” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Off-screen, Larry serves as co-creator and consulting producer on HBO's Insecure, and helped to launch ABC's black-ish as an executive producer and is a co-creator of the spin-off Grownish. Previously, he has written for In Living Color, The PJ's (which he co-created), The Office (on which he also appeared), and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also served as creator, writer, and executive producer of The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him his Emmy for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” and a 2001 Peabody Award. In 2016, Larry hosted the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. If you were a child of the 1980s and early 1990s, you lived through a golden age for sitcom dads. From The Cosby Show to Growing Pains and Roseanne to The Simpsons, fathers of all kinds ruled the airwaves for roughly a decade, providing an entire generation of wide-eyed kids a glimpse into what a father should look like and, for better or worse, what a family can be. But did these portrayals of paternal figures do more harm than good, and how did Friends and Seinfeld land a fatal blow to the fate of sitcom dads? Comedy historian and author Saul Austerlitz joins this episode of Paternal to take a deep dive on the history of the family sitcom, tracing the genre's roots back to the dawn of television. He discusses how fathers were first portrayed in the 1950s and how they have evolved during each decade thereafter, including iconic sitcom dads on Leave it to Beaver, All in the Family, The Cosby Show, Married With Children, Roseanne, and The Simpsons. Austerlitz is a faculty member at NYU who teaches courses on writing about American comedy and writing about television drama, and he's the author of six books, including on the history of sitcoms and the success of the hit series Friends. He recently wrote an article in The Atlantic entitled “Dad Culture Has Nothing to Do With Parenting.” Episode Timestamps: 00:00 - 06:56 - Intro 06:56 - 10:33 - The perils of the “dad perjorative” and the connection to sitcoms 10:33 - 15:12 - Sitcom dads in the 1950s and 1960s 15:12 - 21:18 - Discussing Archie Bunker, “All in the Family,” and 70s family sitcoms 23:16 - 28:28 - The success of “The Cosby Show” 28:28 - 32:22 - The rise of the 1980s Superdad 32:22 - 36:12 - “Roseanne” breaks the mold 36:12 - 42:49 - The alternative dads on “Married With Children” and “The Simpsons” 42:49 - 46:25 - The 1990s demise of the family sitcom  46:25 - 48:42 - “Blackish” and dads on modern-day sitcoms 48:42 - 51:40 - What we lose without family sitcoms Read The Transcript For This Episode

In what is probably the most Blackish Emmys ever with host Anthony Anderson, a reunion of Martin Lawrence's "Martin," historic wins from many Black actors (and by the way, the show was produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment), the 75th Emmys was quite entertaining, quite diverse, and what a celebration. Quinta Brunson became the first Black actress in 40-plus years to take home the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy. Of course, that's for her show, "Abbott Elementary." The last Black woman, by the way, to win the award was Isabel Sanford in "The Jeffersons" back in 1981. But it was Niecy Nash Betts who stole the show with her acceptance speech after winning the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie. Niecy took a minute to thank the person who's been there since the very beginning, herself. She came back to the press room and explained: "I'm the only one who knows what it cost me. I'm the only one who knows how many nights I cried because I couldn't be seen for a certain type of role. I'm the one who knows what it's like to go through divorce on camera and still have to pull up and show out and you still got to go home and you have children and a whole life. And so I'm proud of myself. I'm proud that I did something that people said I could not do because I believed in me and sometimes people don't believe in themselves. And I hope my speech was a delicious invitation for people to do just that: Believe in yourself and congratulate yourself. Sometimes you got to encourage, what? Yourself. And that's why it's not called mama-esteem, them-esteem, us-esteem, it's called self-esteem. Cause don't nobody got to believe it, but you." "Succession," one of my all-time favorite shows, won with six awards each. Of course, the Roy clan of "Succession" and the newfound family of "The Bear" were the Emmy's biggest winners. And what a show! There is no single, universal way to be a father. There are as many ways to be a dad as there are dads. This year, for Father's Day, we asked a variety of different dads to tell us their stories about what fatherhood means to them. And we have a story that puts a new twist on the old saying "like father, like son".In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment to help you make sense of what's going on in your community.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.
