It's really quite the honour to be thought of as the KINGS or QUEENS of a Genre - Think of the likes of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Beyoncé, or Taylor Swift  - Artists that have completely become synonymous with the style of music in which they perform, whether it's through their contributions to innovation of the sound, or - quite frankly - through their track record of being the most popular artist or group to have ever done it. With that in mind, if I were to present the genre of Pop-Punk to you, and ask who the first band that pops in your head is  - I would be willing to bet you'd immediately think of the undisputed kings of the sound: blink-182 This is the story of blink 182's CLASSIC “All The Small Things” with newly unearthed audio from the band. If you are anything like me, you like to think of the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s & 60s as a movement that helped our country achieve, maybe not the entire dream that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. described, but at least something that was closer to that dream, something that showed we were on the right path toward fulfilling that dream. After all, didn't the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act get passed and implemented by the government? Haven't we seen great strides in the implementation of fair housing and lending? Hasn't segregation been relegated to the dark corners of our past? Unfortunately, this is a mythology that many of us would like to hold on to. The assassination of Dr. King in 1968 should have been enough to disabuse us of that mythology. And yet that mythology persists. In more recent years, it has been perforated and torn time and again by the abuse and murder of Black citizens by police and white supremecists: Rodney King, Trayvon Martin, Philando Castille, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Walter Scott, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Oscar Grant, Tamir Rice and so many more. These names represent our collective failure to realize King's dream of justice, equality and equity. Perhaps, if nothing else, these names help those of us in the white community to understand just how frayed and fractured that mythology of progress really is. And there is no place that I can think of that reveals the stark contrast between our hopes and their unfulfilled promise than the city of Birmingham, Alabama.  My guest today is Clay Cornelius, the owner and guide of Red Clay Tours in Birmingham, AL. How do we get to know cities that we visit? How do we get the lay of the land and find out what really happened there? Of course, we can visit monuments and historical sites, but that doesn't begin to fill in the canvas of a city. Clay is the sort of guide that will fill in that canvas with stories and historical detail that you can't get anywhere else. And that detail is especially important for a city as famous and infamous as Birmingham, Alabama. Birmingham, as we know, played a huge role in the era of the civil rights struggle. It was the place of confrontation with Bull Connor, of tragedy with the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church and the deaths of four Black children. It was where Dr. King was jailed and wrote one of his most extraordinary writings, Letter from a Birmingham Jail. As I mentioned on a previous episode, I was part of a wonderful civil rights pilgrimage with a group from Westminster Presbyterian Church here in Olympia, WA. And Clay was our guide when we were in Birmingham and as you will hear, he is a fount of knowledge about Birmingham and its history.Books Mentioned in this episode:“Carry Me Home” by Diane McWhorter  “But for Birmingham: The Local and National Movements in the Civil Rights Struggle” by Glenn Eskew “A More Beautiful and Terrible History” by Jeanne Theoharris

My very special guest today is Singer & Songwriter, Emily Halpern. I regard these two things in life as highly valuable. The Gift of Laughter - I can never repay the gift of the laughter that someone shared with me. The Gift of Music I can never repay a music artist for the gift of their music, and how it makes me feel. I can never fully explain to them how life wouldn't be nearly as sweet for living without the gift of their music. Theses are gifts that I can never repay in full. I was aware of Emily Halpern's writing years before I knew who she was or had met her. Her words had made me laugh, so many countless nights watching Black-Ish, of which she was a writer and Producer from 2016 - 2017. And who could forget “Booksmart” Directed by Olivia Wilde written by Emily Halpern, Susan Vogel, Sarah Haskins and Katie Silberman? Those laughs made my cheeks sting pink. Booksmart laughs were guilty pleasure laughs for sure. I was introduced to her when I created a “Love Letter to Luqcues”. Lucques was the infamous restaurant in LA owned by Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne, and operated by General Manager Matt Duggan. It had closed during covid, for good. I was looking for love stories on the patrons of Lucques. Matt Duggan said that I should speak to Emily Halpern, a screenwriter. And when I did, Emily Halpern had one of the sweetest love stories of all. You see, Emily had her second date with her husband Evan at Lucques, tucked away in a corner table in the bar. The way Emily tells it, They both knew they had found each other's soulmate that night. They had their wedding at Lucques. And, Their first born daughter Franny just missed her very first Sunday Super at Lucques before the Pandemic shut everything down. Kathryn interviews Author Frieda Hoffman. Upon discovering that so many other women had experienced miscarriage but had never felt comfortable sharing it, certified coach Frieda Hoffman felt not only betrayed by and furious with the patriarchy that made them feel ashamed, but also a profound sense of sadness that women seem to be made to suffer in silence. Shame and silence beget shame and silence, but Hoffman saw the opportunity to break that by sharing that essential affirmation that we are not alone—in our experience of loss, infertility, healing, uncertainty, longing for catharsis, or mindset. She is a transformative coach and mediator, creative consultant, and entrepreneur with a passion for supporting women and courageous leadership. She holds an MA in social work and conflict management from Berlin's Alice Salomon University and a dual BA in psychology and anthropology from Johns Hopkins University.Kathryn also interviews Author Joanne Tubbs Kelly. It is no secret, we have to make some tough decisions with regard to loved ones health and care as they age. As more and more states legalize medical aid in dying, the conversation surrounding America's healthcare system and the choice to end suffering is growing. Joanne Kelly chronicles her journey coming to terms with her kind, funny husband's terminal illness and his quest to decide what his death looks like, despite her desire to keep him alive. Alan and Joanne marry in midlife and live a happily-ever-after existence until, at sixty-nine, Alan is diagnosed with a rare, fatal, neurodegenerative illness. As he becomes increasingly disabled and dependent on others, and decreasingly able to find joy in life, he decides he wants to end his suffering using Colorado's Medical Aid in Dying law. Tender and heartfelt, this is one woman's story about loving extravagantly—and being loved in kind.

He was 56 years old and filled with life, laughter and love. I know you’ll enjoy listening to what he has to say. I only regret none of us will ever have the pleasure of watching him perform again. Spanky Brown was one of the kindest, funniest, most charming people I’d ever met. I invite you to enjoy this dose of wisdom and levity, dedicated to a most generous, humble and grateful human being. A memorial fundraiser has been initiated in an effort to help pay for giving Spanky the sendoff he deserves. Please consider donating what you can. As always with these things, every little bit helps. https://www.gofundme.com/spankybrownmemorial (https://www.gofundme.com/spankybrownmemorial) I love you, Spanky! You touched a lot of lives. “Everything you want is on the other side of fear. It takes a couple of attempts to push through the fear to realize you can!” – Matt Hodel “If you don’t know where to start…it’s forward. Just go! Start…continue!” – Matt Hodel “On working with other people – “I think a lot of times it’s just planting seeds and the weird thing is that just because you have a vision and you see things your way doesn't mean that when you plant the seed in someone else there going to grow the same tree or flower. You throw it out there and then it's amazing what other people under different circumstances but the same idea and same intent come up with.” – Matt Hodel “Perfection is almost a demon a certain point. The best work of your life will not be recognized as the best work of your life until later. Until you have the perspective to even appreciate what you did. Nobody says this is going to be my masterpiece. Take the pressure off.” – Matt Hodel When one enters Ragtime Tattoo they will not only walk out with fresh ink but also a fresh look upon life when encountering the shop’s proprietor Matt Hodel. 010: Rezension: Ghostpoet – Shedding Skin

For his 40th birthday, however, much like Jimmy Buffet did with "A Pirate Looks at 40," Don looks at 40 by demonstrating his singer-songwriter skills. Along with highlights from his birthday show at Decatur, Georgia's Java Monkey café, Art gets the inside scoop on how a devout metal fan weaned on Twisted Sister became an unplugged, fingerpicking wordsmith.Songs performed are "You Built a Wall," "Somewhere in Between," "Why I Sing About the Rain," "Carry Me Home" and "Fart Proudly" (seriously). 41 minutes.Art's comments: "Oh, my poor face! Don totally melted us all! But really, if you listen closely to Don's music, you'll hear impressively precise fingerpicking with the most well-thought-out rhymes this side of Jay-Z. Turn off the screamo for a change and take a listen to Don."
