'Rylan: Football, Homophobia and Me' is the latest TV documentary to explore the experience of being LGBTQ+ in the game. Produced by Buzz 16 for TNT Sports, it has a different feel to similar films, given a very personal touch by its hugely likeable presenter - a big West Ham supporter and football fan in general - while focusing on people within the game who are out as gay and bi and who have shared their stories. On this episode of the FvH Podcast, Jon Holmes is joined by two of those people - Thetford Town player-manager Matt Morton, and Sevenoaks Town centre-back Jahmal Howlett-Mundle. Matt is no stranger to appearing on screen since first publicly sharing his story back in the summer of 2020. As a self-described 'alpha male' who bucks all the stereotypes, he's also given great thought to the many factors that make visibility like his so rare in men's football. Jahmal shared the news that he is bisexual a year after Matt, in July 2021, and he has also been in demand from all parts of the media - he's thought to be the only player to have progressed through a Premier League club's Academy system to then later come out publicly. In a chat with host Jon Holmes held in the annual Football v Homophobia Month of Action and what is also LGBT+ History Month, Matt and Jahmal (aka Jam) talk about what it was like to be part of the Rylan documentary, give their reviews of the finished film, and discuss a lot of connected issues such as LGBTQ+ men's mental health, education, and experiences of both discrimination and inclusion at grassroots level. Matt also talks about another doc that's just been released in Germany called 'The Last Taboo' which will hopefully hit UK streaming platforms later in the year. He's the player-manager of Thetford Town Football Club – and in many ways, Matt Morton's influence in football extends beyond what he's managed to achieve on the pitch to the role-model he's become off it. Because when Jake Daniels was considering coming out publicly, it was Matt that the Blackpool player turned to – and Jake wasn't alone in that. It's because Matt was, for a number of years, one of the only out gay men in football who was willing to share his story – and it's a pleasure to finally get Matt onto the show to talk about his journey and so much more besides. We discuss his journey in football, his time as a player and as a manager, his personal journey away from the pitch, being visible and lots, lots more. We think you'll love this chat with Matt, and we're really grateful to him for making the time to come on. On this week's podcast, will the decision of Blackpool striker Jake Daniels to come out as gay help football become a more inclusive space or merely highlight the prejudices that still pervade the sport? We speak to Matt Morton, the gay player-manager cited by Daniels as an inspiration, and the co-founder of England's LGBT supporters' group Di Cunningham. And with homophobic chanting still being heard at Premier League grounds this season we ask whether the game's authorities should be doing more to tackle this form of abuse. (TSAP S03E02) Sam chats with composer, Matt Morton about his career so far and working on the incredible documentary APOLLO 11 that uses archival footage to look at the Apollo 11 mission to land on the moon led by commander Neil Armstrong and pilots Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. "When Matt Morton first learned he'd been given the opportunity to score NEON's documentary Apollo 11, his first thoughts were, how can I put such a momentous event in our nation's history into music, and how can I make my attempt unique? The score the composer created went on to win him a 2019Critics' Choice Documentary Award. The documentary only uses archival footage from the 1969 mission to the moon, so Morton deliberately decided to only use sounds and instrumentation that existed during that era, but still set out to make the music sound futuristic. The synthesizer was born in the 1960s, which the composer utilized heavily, to create an avant-garde sound. “I looked at my music as being able to play the role of bridging the gap between 2019 and 1969. Even though I'm using dated instruments, I think it comes off as a bridge to modern people because I'm using modern musical idioms to communicate with them,” says Matt. A distinct symbolic element that Morton included in a cue was a chopped-up sonogram clip of his niece's heartbeat, which he says is a reminder to our currently divided nation that we possess the ability to triumph, when we choose to unite. Please let me know if you might be interested in speaking with Matt Morton about his unique approach to scoring the historic Apollo 11 mission. It's impossible to overstate the impact of the Apollo 11 mission on the collective cultural and scientific consciousness: for many, Neil Armstrong and "Buzz" Aldrin's 1969 moonwalk could be considered mankind's greatest achievement to date. For the fiftieth anniversary, editor/filmmaker Todd Douglas Miller painstakingly recreated the ins and outs of the mission, from takeoff to the crew's safe return, in the gripping CNN doc Apollo 11.   Central to the doc's appeal, alongside its exclusive use of gorgeous archival footage (including previously unseen 70mm footage), is its pulse-pounding score courtesy of Miller's longtime collaborator Matt Morton. In keeping with the doc's approach of preserving the period-appropriate immediacy of its subject, Morton composed, engineered, and mixed the score for Apollo 11 with era-specific synthesizers and music equipment available at the time of the mission, including first-generation Moog synthesizers. What results is a tense, immediate work of composition that keeps you on the edge of your seat, mining incredible tension out of a historical event whose outcome we already know.   We already celebrated the doc as an honorable mention for one of the best films of 2019, but January's as good a time as any to talk to Morton about the process behind scoring Apollo 11, the painstaking process behind finding the era-appropriate equipment, and scoring a documentary like a thriller. Take a listen! (More of a Comment, Really… is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop. Thanks to Overcast for sponsoring this episode!)
