Another listener request! Brody wanted me to cover the first man on the moon and so this week, I lay the foundation of the Apollo 11 mission including how why we got into the space race to begin with and just went into creating NASA. NASA created a brand new career - astronaut - but just went into being drafted for the new career? And would America ever overcome the Soviet Union in the space race? Tune in and find out. This week I had the opportunity to sit down with design Justin Van Genderen from 2046 Design. I've been a fan of Justin's work for a while so this was an exciting episode to record. In our conversation we talked about the influence of science and technology on Justin's life and career, his creative process behind the designs he makes, and how he decides which designs will be stocked for his shop. Along with his design work, Justin is heavily inspired by space and technology, including people, companies, and projects like Nikola Tesla, NASA, and the Apollo space missions. It's not often that you see a fusion of science/technology and graphic design so Justin's work stands out by doing just that. On this episode of John Rocha's Deep Cut podcast, John welcomes Apollo 11 director Todd Douglas Miller to discuss his incredible documentary that was criminally overlooked by the Academy for a Best Documentary nomination this year. We discuss how he acquired all the footage from the historic moon landing mission, what his biggest challenges were in telling this story in a new and fresh way and if he caught a glimpse of Stanley Kubrick in any of the footage! We also discuss why he thinks this moon landing is still so relevant today over 50 years later and what it said and continues to say about the abilities of our species. Truly an enjoyable and fun conversation with one of the best documentarians working today. Award-winning documentarian Todd Douglas Miller talks with Noel T. Manning II about how multi-award winning masterpiece Apollo 11 on WGWG and Cinemascene.
It's impossible to overstate the impact of the Apollo 11 mission on the collective cultural and scientific consciousness: for many, Neil Armstrong and "Buzz" Aldrin's 1969 moonwalk could be considered mankind's greatest achievement to date. For the fiftieth anniversary, editor/filmmaker Todd Douglas Miller painstakingly recreated the ins and outs of the mission, from takeoff to the crew's safe return, in the gripping CNN doc Apollo 11. Central to the doc's appeal, alongside its exclusive use of gorgeous archival footage (including previously unseen 70mm footage), is its pulse-pounding score courtesy of Miller's longtime collaborator Matt Morton. In keeping with the doc's approach of preserving the period-appropriate immediacy of its subject, Morton composed, engineered, and mixed the score for Apollo 11 with era-specific synthesizers and music equipment available at the time of the mission, including first-generation Moog synthesizers. What results is a tense, immediate work of composition that keeps you on the edge of your seat, mining incredible tension out of a historical event whose outcome we already know. We already celebrated the doc as an honorable mention for one of the best films of 2019, but January's as good a time as any to talk to Morton about the process behind scoring Apollo 11, the painstaking process behind finding the era-appropriate equipment, and scoring a documentary like a thriller. Take a listen! (More of a Comment, Really… is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop. Thanks to Overcast for sponsoring this episode!)

From the day in 1962 When John F. Kennedy famously spoke the words, "We choose to go to the moon ... " to the moment Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Micheal Collins were safely back upon the deck of the U.S.S. Hornet, N.A.S.A., and the eyes of the world, were focused on the now seemingly impossible undertaking accomplished 50 years ago this week. The regular Regular Joes are excited to have guest host Brian Mix along for this episode as we dive into all things N.A.S.A., Apollo Program and space as only four children of the sixties can do. Along the way we take a look at Todd Douglas Miller’s documentary Apollo 11, which is comprised solely of archival footage, much of which has never been seen by the public. Without interviews or narration this work uses the contemporary words of N.A.S.A. personnel and reporters to tell the story as if opening a window to the past. A documentary by Todd Douglas Miller marking the 50th anniversary of the flight that first landed a man on the…
Todd Douglas Miller directed Apollo 11, the new documentary. It compiles thousands of hours of footage from the moon landing into one brilliant, compelling narrative feature. There's no narration. No interviews. All images and voices from the mission and the run up to it. Some of the footage you've seen, but a lot of it you haven't. A lot of breathtaking 70 millimeter shots in Apollo 11 have never been released to the public until now.
This week on the podcast, we discuss the newest and arguably most cinematic take on humanity's first moon landing in Todd Douglas Miller's "Apollo 11." (Pro-Tip: See it in theaters if you can). We start off the show with a Sour Golden Ale from Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales called "Oro de Calabaza" and kick off the DANGER ZONE with a raspberry stout called "One Night Stand" from Zaftig Brewing Co. Episode Timeline: 0:00 - 12:47 Intro & "Oro de Calabaza" - FLICK PICKS- 12:48 - 14:07 Bryan Callen's "Complicated Apes" 14:08 - 18:42 "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" 19:39 - 45:51 "Apollo 11" (Spoiler Free) - DANGER ZONE - 45:52 - 54:23 "One Night Stand" 54:24 - 1:03:07 Hot & Bothered 1:03:08 - END Shout Outs & Listener Feedback Please rate and review us wherever you listen and, what the heck, tell a friend to listen. Then he got an email from an employee at the National Archives who had found some old reels labeled: Apollo 11. Miller talks about the never-before-seen footage that led to his new movie, ‘Apollo 11.'

For director Todd Douglas Miller and his team, it started with archival footage, some of it never seen, at the National Archives and other audio and visual files around the country. Miller discusses his new film, how it came together, both in middle of the politically tumultuous 1960s, and now, in politically tumultuous 2019. Learn more about your ad choices.
