Join us as we dive into the world of The Amazons, a hometown hero band hailing from Reading, UK. Explore their emerging indie rock sound that leans more towards Stereophonics than Blur, sharing the stage with the likes of Catfish and the Bottlemen, Sundara Karma, Foals, and Wolf Alice. Relive the moment their Reading Festival anthem "In My Mind" captivated the crowd and discuss their most-viewed record "Stay with Me," reminiscent of early Oasis. Revisit their debut album, "The Amazons," released in 2017, and get excited for their upcoming follow-up album, currently in the works in Wales. Speculate on their potential Radio 1 stage performance, and rate the likelihood of catching them live at Reading Festival.
This week we head across the "pond" to Scotland and catch up with Robbie McSkimming from DANCING ON TABLES. Dancing On Tables are a Scottish pop-rock band from Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, who formed in 2014 as bored school friends who happened to play the right instruments. Beginning with playing friend's parties and school halls, their journey has since seen them play UK arenas with Catfish and the Bottlemen. Robbie gives us a glimpse into what life was like while creating the band's first full length album and the changes made to make it happen. Robbie and I find common ground on other Scottish bands we both know and love. Join Robbie and I as we "Breathe" new life into the "Sing Along" that is a "Rollercoaster Love" of music.DANCING ON TABLES - "Colour In The Grey" OUT NOW!!!Thanks for listening!!! Dan and Riley welcome you into 2022 in style by talking about the Canadian substack economy and the University of Fort McMurray, as well as a spate of illnesses in New Brunswick, and finally, we read a column about rerunning the War of 1812 by a Prize Idiot. ALSO: We announce a change to the show. Dan and Riley have come to the decision that we need to decrease the frequency of the podcast to weekly, (one week free, one week bonus). We did this because we were both at risk of burning out with the workload we had. Because you have already paid for January under a different setup, please feel free to message and ask for a refund if that's something you want to do. Otherwise, we ride on into 2022! Dan Boeckner of Operators and Wolf Parade and co-host of The Bottlemen podcast returns to Junk Filter for an episode about one of the great underseen films of the eighties, Ivan Passer's 1981 California neo-noir Cutter's Way, based on the crime novel Cutter and Bone by Newton Thornburg. One rainy night in Santa Barbara, Richard Bone (Jeff Bridges) witnesses a man dumping the corpse of a young girl; when he later recognizes a local captain of industry as the man who could be the culprit, his unhinged and physically shattered Vietnam veteran buddy Alex Cutter (John Heard) takes this ball and runs with it, launching an ill-advised blackmail scheme against the tycoon. Dan and I discuss the joys of what we'd call the Ambient Mystery genre, this film's relationship not only to the seventies paranoia genre but also to The Big Lebowski, the brilliant performances from two actors who should have had bigger careers (John Heard and Lisa Eichhorn), how Cutter's Way was mishandled by United Artists on the way to becoming a cult classic, and how we are all Alex Cutter now. Plus! An extended chat about next week's Bad Vibes Election in Canada! Follow Dan Boeckner on Twitter, and consider supporting Operators' Biblioteka Patreon! Trailer for Cutter's Way (Ivan Passer, 1981)

With no management, publishing or record support to speak of, singer/songwriter Josh Savage has blazed a bright trail through the music industry, which should serve as a beacon to any musician looking to make a name for themselves in the unrecognisable 21st Century landscape. "The most promising new young artist to emerge in Winchester in years" has built a loyal fanbase one living room at a time, and his sprawling career has seen him supporting acts as diverse as Razorlight, Rizzle Kicks, Reverend and the Makers, Roll Deep, and even some acts with names that don't begin with ‘R' such as Benjamin Francis Leftwich, John Hiatt, Catfish & The Bottlemen & Ward Thomas. There is a film about Josh Savage. In 2015, Josh played 79 shows in 5 months with Sofar Sounds and in people's homes across America and Europe (including the famous SXSW festival). ‘The Living Room Tour' documentary can be streamed here https://vimeo.com/192102153 Josh Savage's self-releases have been played on BBC Radio 2, BBC Introducing and BBC 6 music and accumulated over 1.5 million plays on Spotify without PR representation. 'Spaces' EP hit #28 and 'Whisper In The Snow' made the top 20 in the iTunes singer/songwriter charts. 'Whisper In The Snow' was aired on Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 show by Jo Whiley. In this episode, Josh talks about his creative processwhat motivates him in his songwritingwhy teachers are artists as wellhow they can always amaze the audience aka their classwhat he learned to interact with the audience - what to do, when they didn't listen, how to calm them and how to energize them Learn more about him at: https://www.joshsavagemusic.com/ or on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/joshsavagemusic/ And check out his new songs on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/artist/0doJV5UAkt2hGKYrpNsHY5?si=pjRk4YPyShm3qjCdqFrOtw&dl_branch=1
Southern California-based alternative rock band Weathers - lead singer/frontman Cameron Boyer, guitarist Cameron Olsen, bassist Brennan Bates, and dummer Cole Carson - have been consistently creating finely crafted introspective pop songs heavily inspired by the counterculture of the 80s and 90s since forming in 2015. The band makes music that speaks to those among us who tend to forget that, regardless of outward appearances, everyone is struggling with something and that no one is alone. Weathers' story is a tale of growing up, of coming into one's own, and includes themes of depression or anxiety and the often difficult maintenance of mental health. Career Highlights: · 2016 single “Happy Pills” was the most added song on alternative radio on its impact date, received the most adds for a new artist in the 2010s, peaked at #21 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart, and has been streamed more than 80M times to date. · 2018 album Kids in the Night released via RCA Records · Co-wrote and worked with Tim Pagnotta (Walk The Moon, Neon Trees), Kyle Moorman (P!nk, Andy Grammar, Elle King), and Drew Pearson (Switchfoot, Ke$ha) · Opened for Cage the Elephant, Jimmy Eat World, Dreamers, Palaye Royale, Badflower, Echosmith and Catfish & The Bottlemen, and played festivals like Lollapalooza, Summerfest, and Firefly. · Partnerships with mental health organizations Jed Foundation, Hot Topic Foundation, and Mental Health America. Harry Heart's distinguished style of alternative rock mixes UK influences (Arctic Monkeys, Catfish and the Bottlemen) with a stadium-bound sound drawn from acts such as The Killers and Kings of Leon, and acoustic moments comparable to those of Hozier and Sun Kil Moon. His multifaceted song-writing style has seen him support an eclectic mix of touring acts, including Radical Face (US), Lewis Watson (UK), and The Delta Riggs (AU). Produced by RecRooms, The Kicking Back Podcast is an audio and video podcast hosted by video producer and musician Brad Ingham and co-hosted by Musician and guitarist Alex Dineen. It discusses Arts, Music and many other topics with a different Artist/ Creative in each episode.

This week, I chat more with Alex Walker (drums) and George Coulson (guitar / lead vocals) of The Valla, your favorite new pop/indie-rock band - about their two newest singles - Ice Cream and Shut My Mouth. The Valla also includes bassist Hamish Knowles and lead guitarist Jay Williamson. Native of nowhere, the four-piece emanate from England, Wales, Australia, and Germany, but currently reside in London, UK. Holding the line between pop and rock, inspired by the likes of Cage The Elephant, Gang of Youths, and Catfish and the Bottlemen, the band plays what they describe as ‘music for damaged souls', writing with beautiful insecurity and vulnerability, appealing to anyone searching for a deeper meaning of life in the modern world. No new information on the Midtown helicopter crash as the NTSB continues their investigation, but the incident has stoked local officials to criticize the conditions that led to the crash: Carolyn Maloney, the Congressmember who represents the district where the helicopter came down renewed her calls for private transit and tourism helicopter flights to be banned over the city. After a deadly helicopter crash atop the Pan Am building helipad in 1977, flights to helipads in Manhattan were banned, but no new restrictions have been put in place despite multiple deadly crashes around Manhattan by helicopters and small planes. In a statement on Representative Maloney's web site, she says: "We cannot rely on good fortune to protect people on the ground. It is past time for the FAA to ban unnecessary helicopters from the skies over our densely packed urban city. The risks to New Yorkers are just too high." Senator Chuck Schumer also called on the FAA to require helicopters be equipped with flight data recorders, and cited years of recommendations from the NTSB that the FAA should mandate flight data and cockpit voice recorders. Schumer noted how the lack of flight data will now impede the investigation. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand added: "After last week's helicopter crash in midtown, the FAA should immediately reconsider the recommendations federal transportation safety investigators have urged since 2011 and take steps now to implement these basic safety features. Flight data recorders provide critical information to help prevent future crashes, and I urge the FAA to act quickly to ensure black boxes are in every helicopter." A memorial service was held for the helicopter pilot, Tim McCormack, in Poughkeepsie, NY. This week finally brought the sad confirmation that a swimmer has been found dead after going missing during a race in the Hudson River. Renowned AIDS researcher, Charles van der Horst, had been competing in the Eight Bridges Hudson River Swim, a 120-mile, week-long competition that was scheduled from June 8th to June 15th, with swimmers covering about 17 miles per day between Hudson River bridges. On Friday, June 14th, Charles had disappeared beneath the water near the George Washington Bridge and did not resurface. His disappearance occured at the end of that day's swim, which had begun 15.7 miles away at the Tappan Zee Bridge. The Coast Guard and NYPD boats began searching immediately, but it wasn't until four days later that his body was discovered near Fort Tyron, north of the GWB. In a statement from the van der Horst family, Charles is described as living life to the fullest and will be remembered for his work in social justice and in the medical field. He immigrated to the United States as an infant from the Netherlands, and was the son of a Holocaust survivor. As a professor of medicine, he provided care to HIV/AIDS patients, contributed meaningful research concerning the diseases, and volunteered at a free clinic after his retirement. When Charles disappeared, he was under the watch of safety crew in kayaks following each swimmer, and another participant describes the extreme care taken to ensure the safety of each swimmer, so it was unclear how this tragedy took place. Last week I told you about the very first roller coaster that was modeled after a mine cart, but 92 years ago on June 26, 1927, The Coney Island Cyclone wooden roller coaster opens to the public A baby doll wearing a "Crawling Dead" t-shirt was realistic enough to be officially pronounced dead by first responders after an early-morning 911 call on June 18th. A jogger spotted the horrifying scene of a baby lying face-down in the grass at 215th Street and 35th Avenue in Bayside, Queens and police quickly arrived to seal off a crime scene. It wasn't until hours later that officials announced it was actually realistic doll that they had earlier pronounced dead without physically inspecting it. In a statement, the FDNY described the doll as having "discoloration consistent with signs of prolonged death" as it was painted gray and blue to simulate loss of oxygen. Once the doll was physically inspected, the ruse became known, and the doll was found wearing a shirt that said "Crawling Dead", presumably a play on the classic horror film "The Walking Dead". The police have opened an investigation into who placed the doll and if it was intended as a prank. You may be able to get legal bike boost soon now that lawmakers have voted to legalize electric bikes and scooters statewide.
