The guys get festive this week with the ostensibly Christmas-themed movie about a Japanese prison camp - Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. Does it give this movie a wholly different, unique perspective with a Japanese director behind the camera? Is this the most homoerotic film ever made to feature no gay sex? What's the story behind Beat Takeshi? All this and a very unfortunate new sponsor in this week's episode! Next week: one more Xmas movie before year's end. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Welcome to episode 87 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I talk about the 1983 movie, “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” and its soundtrack. As I said in the episode, this one has been a long time coming. August was the first time since I started my podcast that I missed putting out an episode. I haven't even been able to stay active on social media due to a lack of time and an excess of pain. I'm finally on the mend, though, so I hope to be back on track soon. If you haven't seen “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence,” I truly recommend it. It has some outstanding performances, a wonderful score, and tackles a wide variety of themes. Plus, getting to see David Bowie and Ryuichi Sakamoto on screen together is a real treat. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!
Joey and Mark open the show discussing the legendary film composer and one of the godfathers of electronic music, Ryuichi Sakamoto who recently passed away a few weeks ago. One of Sakamoto's most impressive feats was acting opposite David Bowie in the film, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, a film about a British Prisoner of War navigating the challenges of imprisonment in a Japanese prison camp during WWII. Sakamoto also wrote the music to the film, his first score of many. RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto If you're interested in seeing Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and are located in the NYC area, check out a 35mm showing on May 12th & 13th at Metrograph: https://metrograph.com/film/?vista_film_id=9999003237 Listen LIVE every Wednesday at 8:30am on 91.3 WVUD, or online at: http://www.wvud.org/
A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the 1983 instrumental theme ‘Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence' by Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto (recorded for the film of the same name). Mathew Woodall is in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber. Sakamoto died on March 28, 2023, at the age of 71 and this podcast is dedicated to his memory.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983) is positively chaste compared to the other Nagisa Oshima films we've seen, as the sex here is always boiling just below the surface. This experiment in stunt casting pays off as one of the best anti-war movies we've seen, digging into the humanity and inhumanities of a Japanese prisoner of war camp, and their Allied prisoners, and leaving us to think about who gets punished and why.

We head back to the cinema for Japanese filmmaker Nagisa Oshima's Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, where we see Bowie taken prisoner during WWII. Ryuichi Sakamoto pulls double duty starring alongside Bowie and brilliantly scoring the film. 1983... What a year for "The Actor!" SPOILER ALERT: Main plot points discussed in detail!

Our Christmas-themed month continues with this not-exactly-Christmasy Japanese World War II movie starring David Bowie and set in a POW camp. However, this film about repressed desires, honor, toxic masculinity, and regret carries some potent themes, even if it's light on conventional Yuletide joy.
This episode we talk about Christmas films we think are underrated. The movie I chose was “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence”. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Folge direkt herunterladen
Bowie! Sakamoto! Obsession! Uh, POW camp! And...war atrocities!? Torture? Ritual suicide? A subtle exploration of the despondency of an officer in charge of a prison camp facing the different cultural interpretations of the honor of surrendering while simultaneously tormented by his absence at the coup d'etat and subsequent executions of his comrades during the February 26 incident of 1939? Why, that can only mean that we are watching Nagisa Oshima's Merry Christmas Mr. Lawerence! If you'd like to watch ahead for next week, we will be discussing and reviewing Jon Waters' Polyester (1981). So get your Odorama card ready.

Martin is joined by returning guests Zachary Curl and Leanne Kubicz to discuss Nagisa Oshima's atypical war film, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. They talk in-depth about the film's four leads: Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Bowie, and Takeshi Kitano. They examine Oshima's themes and dream-like style, look at the films flashback structure, and talk about how they connect personally to it.

The holidays are just around the corner, so we decided to cover a film with a very misleading title: Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. This is an interesting film about a fascinating period of history with some strong performances, but does it all come together to form a masterpiece? We also share our views on Skyfall, In Time, Argo, Something Borrowed and Macao. The next episode is both our 100th and our 2 year anniversary - we'd love to hear from you, so please write to us at marriedwithclickers@gmail.com or call 206-388-0793.
