HOUSTON – Relatives and elected leaders spoke passionately at Tuesday's funeral for George Floyd, demanding reforms and justice for a black man whose death has shaken the world. About 500 friends, family, politicians and entertainers streamed into The Fountain of Praise church in Houston for what co-pastor Mia Wright called, "a home-going celebration of brother George Floyd's life.'' The emotional service, which rang with gospel music and calls to ensure that Floyd did not die in vain, was widely broadcast and streamed online. “I want justice for my brother, for my big brother, that's Big Floyd,” Rodney Floyd said. “Everyone is going to remember him around the world. He's going to change the world.” Those words were echoed throughout the service in remarks by several of the invited guests, a list that included Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and Rep. Al Green. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bj-murphy9/support

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 22, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION This month we are exploring creation as our theme. We are not just beings who are created, but we are also creators ourselves. Life can be thought of as a process of evolution, of creation and re-creation. Our ability to create something new is a defining quality of our humanness. It is what makes us different from other creatures. From certain theological perspectives, our ability to be creative makes us like God. From a purely scientific view, it makes us intelligent agents of evolution. This Sunday we explored some improvisational creating in worship that allowed us to witness this unique and potentially holy human attribute in action. Enjoy the musical improvisations of Tavis Minner and Tommy Poole. Dancer and artist Alicia Mosier Chesser joined Rev. Lavanhar for an improvisational performance, and Mia Wright expressed her poetic interpretations. Today we had the opportunity of interviewing Chelsea the Director of DC 127. DC 127 is a non profit organization determined to reverse the list. Their goal is to have more families willing to adopt children than there are children waiting to be adopted. In our last hour we talked to Natasha Brown, Mia Wright and Kena Hodges about the #10blessings10ksurvivors initiative. This initiative will help 10 thousand families dealing with domestic violence. Counter Culture radio will be partnering up with this initiative to bring about awareness to domestic violence and keep the conversation going paat October so listen in every month! This was a great show that you definitely don't want to miss!
