In this episode, we dive into the viral video of a white woman calling a Black child the N-word—and the jaw-dropping fact that she made over $600K in donations afterward. We unpack what this says about whiteness, dehumanization, and the selective empathy that shields white perpetrators while abandoning Black children. We also talk about the staggering global indifference to the suffering of children in Gaza and the disturbing patterns in white responses to harm—especially when the victims aren't white. But it's not all heavy. We also share some real, raw, and hilarious tales from our own parenting lives—because raising kids while trying to raise consciousness means you've got to find the humor somewhere. Join us for an episode that holds both outrage and tenderness, grief and laughter, all at once.

The new book, "Slavery After Slavery" reveals how some landowners in the South used “forced apprenticeships” re-enslave emancipated Black children. The court system supported a majority of these “forced apprenticeships,” resulting in many children being separated from their families in the years following the Emancipation Proclamation. Dr. Mary Frances Berry, who is an acclaimed historian, educator, activist and author, will give a lecture about the book at Emory University on Friday, March 28. Ahead of her visit to Atlanta, Dr. Berry joined “Closer Look,” to share more about her research and details what she believes are the modern-day consequences of re-enslavement. Democratic Senator Nan Orrock, who represents Senate District 36, is the founder of the Georgia Legislative Women’s Caucus and the Working Families Legislative Caucus. For decades, Orrock has been at the forefront of legislation that has centered civil rights, women’s issues, health policy, workforce issues, environmental issues and more. This podcast examines the education and care of black children in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Segregation was the law in most public U.S. schools during this period. White and black students usually went to separate, but supposedly equal quality classrooms, but most often white students had access to better resources and qualified teachers. In contrast, African-American students were frequently taught by under-qualified and underpaid teachers, and their schools were poorly maintained and lacked basic amenities, their textbooks were often outdated and in poor condition. Also, many black children had to deal with hunger, homelessness, and difficult family conditions. You will hear their stories in three radio dramas from 1944. I Teach Negro Girls, on New World A-Comin', Your School-Your Children on Words At War, and the Colored Orphan Asylum on New World A-Comin'. More at KRobCollection.com

Meet Dr. Bettina L. Love, the William F. Russell Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, who delves into the complex dynamics of education reform and highlights its detrimental effects on Black children and communities. In this episode, Diverse host Dr. Jamal Watson engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Love, author of The New York Times best seller, Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Can Heal. Tune in as Watson and Love discuss the influence of powerful narratives and critical analysis on Black children, challenging the traditional notions of philanthropy, reimagining the concept of harm, and advocating for meaningful repair in education. KEY POINTS: - Love's upbringing and its influence on her understanding of education reform - The intersection of race, education, and policy - The impact of education reforms on black children and communities - On abolition, reparations, and white philanthropy - The importance of centering Black voices in education reform efforts - The pivotal role of shifting societal paradigms for injustices and promoting healing QUOTABLES: "Abolition is so much about love and compassion but holding people accountable for harm. I believe, as an abolitionist, we can't have new structures and new understanding if we don't know what has been done to us and who did it to us." – Dr. Bettina Love "People think change starts in the streets, and it does. But we need change at your house. It's how you raise your children. It's how you talk to your children. It's how you talk to your partner. It's how you talk to the people in your community." – Dr. Bettina Love GUEST RESOURCES: Bettina Love Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/Diverse-Issues-In-Higher-Education X (formerly Twitter): https://twitter.com/DiverseIssues Instagram: https://instagram.com/DiverseIssuesInHigherEducation Facebook: https://facebook.com/DiverseIssuesInHigherEducation WATCH THIS VIDEO AND OTHERS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL: https://www.youtube.com/@DiverseIssuesInHigherEducation Closed captioning and live show transcription are available in the video for this episode. [REBROADCAST FROM November 7, 2023] In 1920, W.E.B Du Bois created the first American magazine addressing Black children. The Brownies' Book invited the era's most prolific Black creatives to submit material—poems, illustrations, songs—so that Black children could feel seen and represented (the magazine was the first to publish a Langston Hughes poem). A new collection, The New Brownies' Book: A Love Letter to Black Families, celebrates the history of the magazine alongside new material for children today. The book was created by married duo Dr. Karida L. Brown, a sociologist and Du Bois expert, and her husband, artist Charly Palmer. Brown and Palmer join us to discuss.

In 1920, W.E.B Du Bois created the first American magazine addressing Black children.
We received the most humbling letter a few months ago from a father and long time listener of Black and Burred who has, along with his wife, adopted black siblings. Here's the problem: they are a white Californian couple living amidst this dystopian, debased generation. Having received insults and slanderous claims of racism, the father reached out to us to ask for help in learning black culture. We won't give it to him. Listen to learn why!Try Magic Mind! This is absolutely infuriating. On Sunday, the New York Times released an explosive new report detailing how thousands of children all over the country are being enrolled into the JROTC without their permission. These kids are literally showing up at school, getting their schedules, and finding out that they've been signed up for the military against their wishes. And it's happening almost exclusively in predominantly Black schools. Then, when kids and their families request that their kids be released from the program, they are refused. It's all outrageous. And we are learning this just weeks after the American military admitted that kids all over the country are being molested and sexually assaulted by ROTC leaders. Heads need to roll. People need to go to jail. And here's what I know. They'd never pull this shit at white schools. Or in rich zip codes. Or at private schools. They are doing this where they thing they will be able to get away with it.I have a lot to unpack and explain.
