You may not know Peter Broughan but you will be familiar with his work. The producer of Rob Roy, The Flying Scotsman and Your Cheatin' Heart (among others) has turned his attention to his great passion for Celtic and has set in motion the production of Paradise - the film that tells the story for the formation of our club. Please listen to or watch the podcast and if interested go to:https://gofund.me/aa8c6ba9Paradise is a compelling narrative that dramatises one strand of the tragically eternal immigrant experience. The film is centred on the foundation of Celtic Football Club by the post-famine Irish community in Glasgow in 1888.The lead character is the Marist teacher Brother Walfrid, who had survived "the great hunger" as a child in Sligo. The club's founding mission statement encapsulated his charitable vision."A football club will be formed for the maintenance of dinner tables for the children and the unemployed"If you want to know more about the film you can watch on youtubeYou can fund it by clicking here This is a public episode. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Rob Roy, a Navy veteran, former member of SEAL Team Six, and the founder and CEO of Trident Coaching and Consulting. Rob brings decades of experience in elite military operations and leadership development, and his personal journey—from a difficult upbringing in Milwaukee to the pinnacle of America's special operations community—is nothing short of extraordinary. In our conversation, Rob opens up about his time in the SEALs, the intense mental and physical challenges of BUD/S training, and what it was like to serve among the most elite warriors in the world. He shares hard-earned wisdom on resilience, leadership, and self-mastery, the transition from life inside SEAL Team Six to coaching high performers in the civilian world, and much more. I invite you to listen to the full conversation, where we explore grit, growth, and the mindset of excellence. And now I give you, Rob Roy.

Join Rob Roy and me as we discuss building a culture that encourages ownership and creative problem solving. Rob Roy is the founder of Trident CC. One of my favorite parts of this interview was when he talked about using feedback loops to encourage continuous improvement at his company. 1. Empowering employees through recognition Rob Roy shares his system for recognizing and valuing his employees. He makes a point to acknowledge 2-3 people at every event, providing personalized praise that is meaningful to each individual. This helps foster a sense of belonging and appreciation, rather than just a transactional relationship. You can watch Rob's 5 Minute System Segment on YouTube. 2. Cultivating a culture of trust and empowerment  Rob describes how he empowers his team to make decisions and strategize on the company's vision and plans. He holds annual planning sessions where the team collaborates to map out the year, with Rob providing the high-level direction and the team working out the details and logistics. This allows his employees to take ownership and feel invested in the company's success. 3. Feedback loops and continuous improvement Rob has implemented feedback systems to gather ongoing input from clients on his coaches' performance. This allows him to identify areas for improvement and provide additional training and support to his team. He also seeks feedback from the clients to understand the real impact of the coaching, not just surface-level metrics. 4. Cultivating meaningful relationships  Rob discusses the importance of building genuine relationships with his employees, clients, and mentors. He highlights the advice and support he has received from successful business leaders like Yakov and Lance, who have emphasized the value of putting people first. Rob strives to embody this mindset in his leadership approach. Learn more about Rob Roy over at Trident Coaching and Consulting. You can also connect with him on LinkedIn.  As always, if you have any questions or want to submit a fantastic guest for the podcast, just reach out to me on the Systematic Leader website, and I'll do my best to get them on. Rob Roy's path to becoming a Navy pilot started with inspiration from watching Top Gun as a child. Coming from a non-military background, he navigated the path to military aviation on his own, attending the U.S. Naval Academy and graduating in 2011. After completing Aviation Pre-flight Indoctrination in Pensacola, he trained in the T-34 and T-45, before Selecting C-2 Greyhounds, used for carrier onboard delivery. Rob's journey included deployments, experiences in Corpus Christi, Texas, and roles that spanned from flying in high-stakes environments to assisting with logistics aboard carriers. One highlight of Rob's career was flying missions to carriers and ensuring delivery of personnel and supplies, showcasing the essential and often overlooked logistical backbone of naval aviation. He tells the story of getting his parents onto a carrier in the Mediterranean, and going around his Squadron CO (Skipper) to do so; a rare and meaningful gesture that illustrated his resourcefulness and deep connection to his family's contributions. His tenure also involved unique assignments, transitioning aspirations, and navigating challenges with commanding officers, illustrating both the rigor and fulfillment of a naval aviator's career.

Wait, I thought you only covered wine in this podcast? I do! And guess what? Vermouth is wine.   Vermouth is an aromatized, fortified wine flavored with botanicals like roots, herbs, barks, flowers, seeds, and spices. Although aromatized beverages have been around for millennia, vermouth's origins lie in the Kingdom of Savoie in the 1700s, first in Torino, Italy and then in Chambéry, France.  Photo: Botanicals. Credit: Unsplash   First offered in apothecaries for the healing properties of wormwood, the main botanical in Italian vermouth, royal courts and then high society took a shine to vermouth in Torino, and its medicinal image was shed and it the wine was served as an aperitif in cafés. Simultaneously, in France, dry vermouth took off and cafes from Lyon to Paris.   Although served neat or on ice in Europe, vermouth took off in the Americas and found a place in the bars of the US as a major ingredient in cocktails like the Manhattan, the Americano, the Rob Roy, Negroni, and, of course, the Martini.    After some ups and downs, vermouth is trendy again and more producers from around the world -- from Canada to Australia to South Africa, as well as the traditional regions in Italy, France, and Spain are experiencing a revival.   Even though it's treated like a spirit more than a wine, I think it's time to cover this historic, interesting beverage. I cover the history of vermouth, how and where it's made, the different types of vermouth, and some of the cocktails that made it famous.  _____________________________________________

I went last month and spend the first part of the podcast talking about that time & games played. THEN it's on to my specific historical topic.]               Ok, now I'm really finished with Scotland. Like everything I explore for my wargame podcast, these deep dives take over my gaming for a while. That's enjoyable, but since I don't notch wargame opportunities and completions frequently, it means these subjects take me a while. Since I'm eager to explore other topics, too, eventually I have to move along. However, just as with Vietnam, Waterloo, or Market-Garden, I will have learned so much that it will be easier to dabble with similar wargames (or even return to some favorites) in the future.         For this topic, I used my vacation to Scotland last September to prompt a lot of learning about that country's military history. Though I should say it wasn't limited to when Scotland was a country—-there's a lot of history when it was a kingdom, and also earlier when it was tribal territory. Part of the joy was beginning to understand this history in more of its rich complexity than I understood from watching Braveheart alone. ;-) Since I'd already dabbled in the War for Scottish Independence, with William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and a couple King Edwards . . . plus the early history of Roman expansion against the Caledonians, the major chapter in his history that still remained were the Jacobite rebellions. There are movies and wargames about this period, but not as many as might be expected. I'd seen the interesting faux documentary Culloden earlier, and this time I watched Rob Roy. There are a few films and other stories about this legendary+historic figure. The more recent (1990s) film with Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange, and Tim Roth does not make for accurate history, but it's a decent film that can get someone like me reading about the real history of this person. As much as we can untangle, anyway.     What's next for this podcast? Well, I'm going to take a delicate dive into the challenging topic of anthropological “first contact” in history games. As much as possible, I want to explore what happened when Europeans & the indigenous people of the New World first encountered each other. I don't really mean the Indian Wars of the plains. Instead, I'm after what happened when the first ships arrived and people “discovered” each other. This is an area where history games and wargames have not made much progress, but that's also why the subject is interesting. -Mark

Alise's journey to Switch [02:28] The Regional Water Improvement Pipeline [04:10] Switch's ESG strategy [08:20] Advice for women in sustainability [12:10] Prioritizing sustainability Switch is a technology infrastructure ecosystem corporation with a core business to design, construct, and operate the most advanced data centers. While headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, Switch also has locations in Northern Nevada, Michigan, Atlanta, and Texas. CEO and founder, Rob Roy, has prioritized sustainability since he founded the company. Switch believes data runs the planet and that working together can ensure it doesn't harm the planet. Regional Water Improvement Pipeline Project Switch can now cool all of its data centers at its Northern Nevada campus on 100% recycled water while being powered by 100% renewable power. The company's Northern Nevada campus in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center is situated approximately 16 miles away from a water reclamation facility. This facility caters to the Reno and Sparks region, as well as Washoe County. Recognizing the potential benefits, Switch established a pipeline spanning 16 miles from the pump station.  This pipeline will provide over 4,000 acre-feet of water to the industrial park, allowing the construction of around 30,000 more homes in the area. Furthermore, it will save ratepayers $30 million in maintenance costs for the water reclamation facility. Using water cooling is 30% more efficient than electricity. Working together for sustainability Switch collaborated with the State of Nevada and Storey County to establish a tax increment area to secure funding for the construction of a pipeline, which cost nearly $40 million. This successful collaboration involved numerous stakeholders, including Tesla and Google, and allowed for the use of 100% recycled water while promoting sustainability. This opportunity was a win for everyone involved as it helps each company with sustainability initiatives.    Resources & People Mentioned Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center Switch - Las Vegas Connect with Alise Porto On LinkedIn Alise Porto joined the Switch team in 2015 and has held several key senior management roles, currently serving as Vice President of Sustainability & Strategic Initiatives. As an invaluable member of the Sustainability Team, she is responsible for the oversight of Switch's environmental, social, and governance initiatives (ESG) and implementing sustainable energy and resource management strategies that align with the company's overall policies and goals of being environmentally and socially sustainable, in partnership with the Policy team. In addition, Porto leads Switch's energy procurement strategy and energy resources, including Switch's retail electric provider activities in Texas and various resource management initiatives. She similarly leads the development and execution of special projects associated with business development and innovative sustainable water resource management. This week on The Literary Life Podcast, Angelina, Thomas, and Cindy continue their discussion of Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped, covering chapters 7-18. After sharing their commonplace quotes, Thomas opens the conversation with a brief synopsis of chapter 7. Angelina notes the increase in danger and violence in this section of the book, and our hosts talk about the roguish character of Alan Breck. They make many comparisons between Kidnapped and Treasure Island and highlight the other-world atmosphere Stevenson creates while staying in the real world. Cindy mentions some of the conflict between the Campbells and MacDonalds, and Thomas fleshes out a little more of this aspect of Scottish history. Commonplace Quotes: Mr. Roger Lancelyn Green, writing in English not long ago, remarked that the reading of Rider Haggard had been to many a sort of religious experience. To some people this will have seemed simply grotesque. I myself would strongly disagree with it if ‘religious' is taken to mean ‘Christian.' And even if we take it in a sub-Christian sense, it would have been safer to say that such people had first met in Haggard's romances elements which they would meet again in religious experience if they ever came to have any. But I think Mr. Green is very much nearer the mark than those who assume that no one has ever read the romances except in order to be thrilled by hair-breadth escapes. If he had said simply that something which the educated receive from poetry can reach the masses through stories of adventure, and almost in no other way, then I think he would have been right. C. S. Lewis The conception which unites the whole varied work of Stevenson was that romance, or the vision of the possibilities of things, was far more important than mere occurrences: that one was the soul of our life, the other the body, and that the soul was the precious thing. G. K. Chesterton, from Varied Types What do you usually do when you are shut up in a secret room, with no chance of getting out for hours? As for me, I always say poetry to myself. It is one of the uses of poetry–one says it to oneself in distressing circumstances of that kind, or when one has to wait at railway stations, or when one cannot get to sleep at night. You will find poetry most useful for this purpose. So learn plenty of it, and be sure it is the best kind, because this is most useful as well as most agreeable. E. Nesbit, from The House of Arden A Selection from Rob Roy's Grave by William Wordsworth Thou, although with some wild thoughts Wild Chieftain of a savage Clan! Hadst this to boast of; thou didst love The liberty of man. And, had it been thy lot to live With us who now behold the light, Thou would'st have nobly stirred thyself, And battled for the Right. For thou wert still the poor man's stay, The poor man's heart, the poor man's hand; And all the oppressed, who wanted strength, Had thine at their command.
