I love my job because it allows me to interact with artists in a way that other people don't get to. And in this case, it was with William Matthews at his show, which is called Decades, and it's at the Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West. It's running through the fall of 2024.It's all there on the walls, no matter what part of his life you're going to see, Williams is there to talk about it. We walk through his show and discuss it. This podcast really is one that would be best seen on YouTube versus just listening to it, but I'm sure it will still have great interest even that way.I talked to William about three or four years ago in episodes 86 and 87, so you can go back if you want to hear his back story. But this particular podcast really is at the show, and you'll see his books, his illustrations, his album covers. He's really done some amazing album covers. This is, again, just a small little part of his life. He's also done major murals. Once you go through this show, you can see the variety of things that have created the excitement for him to go to all these creative places. And sometimes it's really interesting, like these big, huge ties that he's made, which are in museum collections like the Booth. So again, I hope you can watch it on YouTube. It's a beautiful show. Go see it if you can. It's up through the fall of 2024. This is William Matthews on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast Episode 285.

I had Duke Beardsley on today. He's something else. I just love his energy. When that man walks into a room, he has a presence, and if you look at his art - it's the same thing. These big, beautiful works with a modern sensibility, cowboys, and Western life. He's got his own voice, which again, is what I love in an artist and what I look for in my own artists that I represent.Duke has managed to find a lane that no one else has and he's been doing it for quite a while now. He's academically trained at the L.A. Art Center and he has this unique background of being a fifth-generation Coloradan who grew up part of the time in Denver, but the other part he's on a family ranch riding a horse, doing the things that you do if you have a ranch. So Duke is the product of this mix of experiences growing up and living the life of a Westerner. He's found a unique voice and I'm a big fan. This was a really fun podcast. Duke Beardsley on Art Dealer Diaries Podcast episode 235.

William Matthews opens by asking a powerful question: Are you prepared to die? He describes the nature of horror films and draws parallels to the experience of being Black in America. He then takes us to the story of Mary of Bethany, who publicly challenged patriarchy and social norms by publicly mourning Jesus before his death. William tells listeners that power, whether religious or political, does not reward you for doing the right thing, only for reinforcing its system of violence against marginalized bodies. So when we do the work of dismantling these systems, we need to be prepared to die. William concludes by saying that America is living in a collective horror story, and he challenges us to name the beast among us. To do this, we have to have radical compassion for the marginalized and vehemently oppose dehumanizing rhetoric. And remember that Jesus, the liberator, was anointed to die. Following William's talk, Jeff and Sarah discuss America's true original sin, listening to narratives besides our own, and what comes next once we've heard them.   Show Notes Evolving Faith Conference Podcast After Party (Community Discussion)

Nashville-based husband-and-wife duo Mike T. Lewis and MaryBeth Zamer, known on stage as The Twangtown Paramours, have made a name for themselves defying boundaries with their award-winning catalogue of Americana, folk, and blues anthems. With a slew of accolades for their first two acoustic full-length albums, they've earned a loyal following, balancing serious instrumental and vocal chops with witty stage banter and a lighthearted approach to life. They don't take themselves, or the world, too seriously. Now poised to release their third full-length album, Double Down on a Bad Thing, The Twangtown Paramours are shifting gears to showcase a full band, electric, groove-oriented, upbeat, soul-infused, and retro blues sound. “We want people to have fun, to cheer up, to dance, and to start sporting a positive attitude, dammit,” says Mike. Hit songwriter, session musician, and producer Mike Lewis was born in NYC, but his sound is informed by a mix of experiences across the country's major music centers, including NYC, L.A., Austin, and Nashville. He began learning classical and jazz guitar at age eight, studying under Leonid Bolotine, William Matthews, and Barry Galbraith, before earning degrees at Columbia in New York City and the Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. He wrote a #1 platinum pop hit ranked the 2nd biggest-selling female ballad of all time in Korea, and occasionally plays upright bass for Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Born in Washington D.C., lead singer MaryBeth Zamer was raised on a mix of opera and American songbook music, singing along to Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald, before discovering Little Feat, Bonnie Raitt, and the blues in high school. A fixture in the Washington, D.C. club scene for years, MaryBeth performed with popular local cover band, Ignition and sang backup vocals for Eva Cassidy's band, Method Actor. “Eva was a huge influence on my singing style,” MaryBeth says. “She taught me to go beyond having fun and hitting the right notes, to sing in a way that conveys real emotion.” MaryBeth and Mike met and started dating in 2009, while both were working on separate musical projects. “The relationship came first,” says MaryBeth, “but I kept hearing songs he'd written that I loved, and I wanted to add my own vocal spin to them. I felt like I could interpret and deliver Mike's songs the way he intended them to be.” The Twangtown Paramours released their debut self-titled album via Inside Edge Records just a year later in 2010, a well-received, pop-infused folk album that rose to #11 on the Folk charts. In 2012, they released their second full-length project, The Promise of Friday Night, a narrative-driven, acoustic folk album that hit #2 on the Folk charts, #150 on the Americana charts, and #7 on Deep Roots Magazine's top 50 albums of 2012. In the following years, the pair became three-time finalists at the Kerrville New Folk Competition in Kerrville, TX and winners of the Wildflower Contest in Richardson, TX. They also had the honor to open for major acts such as Joe Ely, Claire Lynch, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. We all know the name Kohlmann. Kohlmann Hall, the Kohlmann Address at graduation, but who was Fr. Anthony Kohlmann, S.J., the man? Tim Nau'61 briefly wondered that question in 1957 on his way to JUG. But the thought passed. After attending his 50th reunion in 2011, Tim remembered the name Kohlmann, and again wondered who was Anthony Kohlmann? Soon Tim's personal search for answers was on. Nau ordered books, researched online, and even planned travel to Europe to meet with historians in the town where Kohlmann grew up. What did answers did Tim find about Gonzaga's Founder? Kohlmann was a much more fascinating and prominent figure in American Catholicism than he thought. In S1E14, Tim unpacks piece by piece Kohlmann, the man. From his formative days in Europe, and how the horror of the French Revolution impacted his worldview. What events led brought Kohlmann to America? And what massive American legal precedent belongs to Gonzaga’s Founder? Gonzaga doesn't make it 20 years, let alone 200 years, without a second, lesser-celebrated, but just as important founding father: Fr. William Matthews. Matthews was pivotal shortly before, and after Kohlmann, but doesn't really get the credit in Gonzaga lore. Matthews’ personality was a big part of why The Washington Catholic Seminary survived to become Gonzaga, as Tim explains in spellbinding detail. In 1821, two centuries ago, two very different men of God, in birthplace, motives, temperament, and vision, combined to lay the foundation that lives on in Gonzaga. Europe's Kohlmann and America's Matthews – Gonzaga’s Founding Fathers. Again special thanks to Tim Nau' 61 for sharing his research that he did simply because he "has the history gene." We look forward to hearing more from Tim in future episode on the unique lexicon of Gonzaga in later the Spring. Next week is the last Episode before we take a break for the Holidays. So last call for Christmas greetings. Would love to hear from you where ever you listen around the world, even if it's around the beltway. On this episode our good friend William Matthews joins us to discuss how fluid is the Bible when it comes to culture. Theres a fear in Christian circles that any attempt to "update" the Bible is a sign of heresy and progressive christianity, but was it always intended to remain the way it is? Did God stop speaking after the Bible was bound? Or is he speaking now in a louder voice that is in step with where his creation is in history?
