Today's woman was born to a black father and a white mother. Both her parents were well educated and they in turn had high expectations for her. She went to college and earned a degree in applied mathematics. But as her career took shape, she felt she didn't quite fit in anywhere. So after a year, she left the career her college degree had prepared her for and decided to pursue the arts. Jazz singing was where things felt right and she knew her voice and intelligence would lead the way. She joined a band and wrote her own songs. She won awards and became known in the music world for helping women choose more for themselves through music. Today, she performs, coaches and shows women leaders of all colors and ages how to choose more for themselves. It is my pleasure to introduce you to Monique DeBose.

Monique DeBose is a transformational entertainer. What's that, you ask? Well, she writes music, plays, and creates courses for women that change lives. I daresay she'll have that effect on you in this podcast episode too. We meander into all kinds of provocative places as we unpack how Monique's good girl conditioning has infiltrated her life, right down to what she thinks about going into a store, to how she mothers her sons. She shares generously about her own experience, as a woman of color, of how she's moving out of good girl, and into sovereign woman. How? Monique is a big believer in finding a safe, supportive community during your transformative process. She also gives us a powerful exercise to start clearing our “want” and “desire” pipes. The flow in those “want” pipes is often clogged in women with good girl conditioning. Oh, and I've woven in some music from Monique's new album, You Are The Sovereign One, to make this podcast even more transformational and experiential. Ready to step into sovereign woman? There is a metaphysical side of music we rarely hear about. Consider the question: Will music survive if humans die out? The Brothers Koren - Isaac and Thorald - call this "musical cosmology." The idea, which Isaac first explored at Northeastern University, is that we all have a unique way of hearing music (eardrums are as unique as fingerprints), and by understanding how we process it, we can understand ourselves. Lambring had a publishing deal in Nashville, so you know she has strengthened that songwriting muscle. But after a few years of writing catchy songs for other people, she decided to do her own thing. I’m glad she did. Autonomy has some of the year’s best songwriting, but Lambring’s performances really give them life. This album is an astonishing venting of feminine rage -- not because Lambring is an angry woman, but because this album is all about examining the at times deadly pressures cis women face. Today on the More Cheese Less Whiskers podcast we're talking with Monique DeBose who’s in LA. You are in for a treat if you like music, and jazz music particularly, because Monique has a wonderful jazz album that's debuted on the iTunes charts at number two in the jazz category. We had a great conversation to brainstorm ideas around how to make her music dreams come true. We talked a lot about the importance of getting people to know you, like you and then to trust you, and by trust in this context, we talking about people trusting they will have a good experience when they come to see her perform or they buy her album. She has the opportunity to model some of ways this has been done in other situations and really take an approach of starting in her local market to lay the foundations before looking at different ways of distributing her music or who else might be interested in sponsoring or participating in an event with her. You're really gonna enjoy this episode. There's a lot of parallels no matter what your ‘performance’ is. It's the same in a lot of ways to what I do. You know I go on tour each summer to Toronto, London, Amsterdam and Sydney, and I’m able to do small events like this because people know me, like me and trust me from all the time we get to spend together on the podcasts here, so I think you're really going to enjoy this episode, no matter what you do.   Show Links:Show TranscriptProfitActivatorScore.com     Want to be a guest on the show? In 2016, singer-songwriter Monique DeBose was diagnosed with a tumour. She did something deeply creative after that. She dialogued with it. She asked what it wanted to teach her. It replied, "You need to be expressing authentically in a way that really has you be fulfilled.” So she asked herself, “What am I really not saying in the world that I need to be saying? And what am I afraid to say, but feel the need to say?” This year, Monique released two creative projects, both edgy and highly personal. One was an award-winning play, Mulatto Math, that sold out in New York and Los Angeles. The other was her chart-topping album, The Sovereign One, which hit #2 on its iTunes debut. In today's episode, Monique and I play with the tension between expressing and playing safe. How do we allow ourselves to be visible, to be seen, when what we're saying feels vulnerable? What if it hurts, or shocks someone? What if people we care about don't like it? What if they think about us differently? How do we speak up anyway, even if we're scared of how it'll be received? Show highlights include: Hearing what’s asking to be heard, even if it won’t be appreciated (or might even cause pain) How reaching the "fuck-its" can open you If you can quit your creative project, you should do so... Practical ways to handle discomfort Using the 3 Improv Rules: Be present, listen, and “yes, and…” How to make space inside yourself to hear what’s going on You don't need to be creating a project in the world to get something out of this conversation. This is for anyone who struggles with visibility and speaking up. Want to feel braver being seen? Join us. What it shared: You need to be expressing authentically in a way that really has you be fulfilled.” “What am I really not saying in the world that I need to be saying, and what am I afraid to say, but I feel need to say?” “We like to feel comfortable as humans. That’s just a natural thing. And to really go for it...takes a huge act of courage.” “That energy of ‘you must speak your truth’ just haunted me.”

I lived in a world that told me what to do, how to feel, what to like, and what not to like. In the process, I learned to shut down my voice and authentic expression. Have you had a similar experience? (You don’t speak up and say you contributed a shit load more to your company than the guy they’re promoting over you. Or you don’t tell your husband what you desire and the resentment builds…) Self-expression is the key to happy living. You need to know how to listen to your true voice to be able to differentiate the thoughts in your head that are serving you versus the ones holding you back. When you trust your inner wisdom, you take the steps necessary to move closer toward your dreams. If you are tired of living somebody else’s idea of a good life, then consider a private wholistic coaching session. You will gain access to the wisdom and tools needed to create your unique, amazing life.
