If you though picking the best of a season was touch, how about these of a year which included some 40 guests. Every interview I did boasted great stories but these 6 stood out: There was Mike North, a pioneer in all sports radio in Chicago and a current voice, Mark Silverman from ESPN 1000 who shared his bout with cancer.. Thom Brennaman shared his difficult road back to broadcasting after a gay slur cost him his broadcasting career. Will Perdue, a four time NBA champion (three with the Bulls) discussed the various NBA coaches he played under. Hub Arkush, who recently suffered a severe brain and heart condition but is making a great recovery, remembered how Pro Football Weekly got started and how he had to run the ship at the age of 26.And the guy with perhaps the story of the year was Dave Revsine, host of the Big Ten Network who once sought a golf game and wound up being paired with one of the most talked about people of the last 50 years!Tell me a story I don't know is now part of the Sports Media Watch podcast (sportsmediawatch.com) so please follow @paulsen_smw. You're an overachiever. Maybe you're often referred to as a badass. Everyone's in awe of how much you get done, and how in control of life you seem to be – and admittedly, that admiration feels good. In fact, you live for it. What almost nobody knows is that you're fizzling with anxiety, up at night ruminating on things, quick to anger, and you struggle to relax. We're discussing High Functioning Anxiety (HFA). It's not an officially recognized diagnosis, because the person continues to function – quite well, in fact. That doesn't mean the struggles with anxious thoughts and feelings aren't real, or even debilitating. My guest is adventurer and coach, Charlotte Fowles, who is no stranger to overachieving and busy-ness addiction. Charlotte experienced a decade of trauma, including divorce, depression and cancer, which meant she had to change her overachieving ways. She now helps executives and leaders to manage their own inner challenges, including HFA. Sidebar: We also debunk the concept of badassery as looking like you've got everything together. So fun! Join us for this thought-provoking and radically practical conversation. Daisy Goodwin's article on HFA in the Times. Ellen Hendriksen's book: How to be yourself. Brené Brown's Atlas of the Heart. Mark Silverman has the classic "rag to riches" story. Going from alcohol and substance abuse to homelessness to mansion and sports car and all the trappings of success. His perspective has given him a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to share. When we got on the subject of boundaries and relating with those around us, Mark shared some profound insights. We dove into the stages of boundary setting starting from the harsh oversetting to the humble and timid apologies and finally ending up setting boundaries with your knees and elbows. Those knees and elbows allow you to create space. You can be unapologetically you.We talked about the consequences of doing that. When Mark used to enter a room he was everyone's friend. He was a chameleon, shifting himself to reflect back wheat each person needed. He was eminently likeable. When he started speaking his mind and sharing his real thoughts and setting appropriate boundaries, he was shocked to discover not everyone wanted to be his friend. He got in more verbal scuffles. And many people walked away hurt or offended.Months or years later, many of those same people came back to say that he told them exactly what they needed to hear, even if it was offensive. We unpack addiction, what it takes to be a great coach, and so much more!Check out Mark's website: https://www.markjsilverman.com/ And his LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark22102/----------------------------------------------------------------Thanks for listening!Let me know what you think of the show and connect on social media!Rate the podcast on iTunesConnect with me on LinkedInConnect with me on Facebook

Today I join Mark Silverman on his Mastering Midlife podcast. On this episode, I share my perspective on great leadership and why I believe leaders should focus less on creating followers, and instead, create more leaders. We discuss the challenges of leading an organization during uncertain times and why I believe people believe the illusion that life is safe, secure, and predictable. Love. Rich P.S. For most of human history, it wasn't called coaching. It was called leadership.
