If I had the key to fat loss after 45… and I could get every woman to use it, we could change history. Struggling with weight gain during menopause? You're not alone. Tune in to learn about the unique challenges and effective strategies for fat loss specifically tailored for women over 45. We're unpacking how to adapt your exercise routines to fuel fat loss and boost your metabolism in midlife. In this episode of Flipping 50, we explore the intricacies of fat loss during menopause, focusing on how changes in hormones affect your body and what you can do to rev up your metabolism. Discover exercise strategies and lifestyle tweaks that are effective for women navigating the shifts that come with menopause. Questions We Answer In This Episode: How does menopause impact metabolism and weight? [00:03:15] What types of exercise help with fat loss in menopausal women? [00:05:15] Can exercise influence appetite and food cravings during menopause? [00:05:45] What role does sleep play in weight management during menopause? [00:03:55] How can stress affect your weight during menopause, and what can you do about it? [00:13:05] What are practical tips for integrating effective fat loss workouts into a busy schedule? [00:18:05] In a study titled "The Effects of Exercise Training on Body Composition in Postmenopausal Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" provides a thorough analysis of how different forms of exercise influence body composition, particularly fat mass, in postmenopausal women. The research synthesizes results from various studies to conclude that while all forms of exercise are beneficial, resistance training and aerobic exercises stand out for their significant impact. Resistance training is especially effective at maintaining and increasing muscle mass, which in turn helps with more efficient fat burning and metabolic rate enhancement. Aerobic exercise, on the other hand, contributes significantly to overall fat loss, improving cardiovascular health and reducing fat percentages across the body. The research paper discusses different forms of cardiovascular training (often referred to simply as "cardio") for postmenopausal women, emphasizing both aerobic training and resistance training. The study specifically mentions aerobic training (AT) as beneficial for reducing fat mass and improving pulmonary function. This form of training is characterized by activities that increase the heart rate and respiratory rate, typically including exercises like walking, running, cycling, or swimming. Aerobic training was found to be effective not just for reducing fat mass, particularly visceral fat, but also for improving muscle function and potentially contributing to skeletal muscle hypertrophy, which are critical for combating sarcopenia in the elderly. This type of exercise is generally performed at moderate intensity, where the individual can still talk but might be too breathless to sing. Strength Key to Fat Loss After 45 In terms of resistance training (RT), the research highlights its role in improving muscle strength and mass. Resistance training involves exercises that cause the muscles to contract against an external resistance with the expectation of increases in strength, tone, mass, and/or endurance. This could include lifting weights, using resistance bands, or doing body-weight exercises like push-ups and squats. The intensity of these exercises was not specifically quantified in the abstract, but resistance training often involves varying intensities depending on the load and the number of repetitions performed, typically structured in sets. Overall, the study underlines that both aerobic and resistance exercises are integral for managing health outcomes in postmenopausal women, with specific benefits attributed to each type depending on the targeted health outcome. Heidi shares how she realized she was a people pleaser at the end of her third marriage and the journey that helped her to uncover honoring her true self. On this week's episode of IMPACT, host Meghan Walker is joined by two experts in women's health - Dr. Stephanie Estima, a chiropractor and expert in functional neurology, and Dr. Anna Cabeca, a world-renowned, triple-board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist who helps women transition through the various hormonal phases of their lives. Meghan's guests share their insights on navigating the hormonal changes that occur during perimenopause and menopause. Dr. Estima discusses the role of the ketogenic diet in supporting brain function and reducing inflammation during these stages of life. She notes that the effectiveness of the keto diet can vary for women compared to men, and that it's important to individualize the approach. Dr. Cabeca emphasizes the importance of women taking control of their own health and being proactive in understanding their bodies and how to support their well-being. She advises women to be mindful of their diet, particularly avoiding excess carbohydrates which have been linked to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, stroke, and cancer. Instead, she recommends focusing on whole foods, incorporating plenty of greens, and limiting processed and sugary foods. Dr. Cabeca also advocates for detoxification and intermittent fasting, as well as getting enough sleep and incorporating flexibility into daily routines. In addition to diet and self-care, the importance of checking urine pH as an indicator of overall health and well-being is emphasized, as well as eating small, early dinners before 7 pm to support longevity. Starting each day with gratitude, prayer, or meditation will set a positive foundation for a day of clarity and focus. Overall, Dr. Cabeca and Dr. Estima emphasize the importance of taking a holistic approach to supporting the body's natural desire for homeostasis, balance, and health during perimenopause and menopause. By taking control of our own health and being proactive in understanding and supporting our bodies, we can better navigate these stages of life and maintain optimal well-being. This episode is beyond beneficial so make sure to tune it and absorb all that these experts have to share. So I had that fear and that took me into embracing the ketogenic lifestyle.” Dr. Anna Cabeca “As we enter menopause, we become less able to use glucose for fuel in the brain because it's an estrogen dependent process. So switching to ketones at least periodically really powers up our brain.” Dr. Anna Cabeca “We can powerfully use behaviors to control our physiology and empower physiology to improve our behaviors, so they're combined.” Dr. Anna Cabeca “I feel as though there has been no further sophistication in thinking other than if you're premenopausal we'll just stick you on the pill and if you're postmenopausal we'll put you on hormone replacement therapy and this whole endocrine thing, it's really not that complicated.” Dr. Meghan Walker “I say, don't give me the control over your health. Take control of your own health because you have to discern what's working for you and what's not.” Dr. Anna Cabeca “The resources out there for women are not plentiful. And the conversations by men are not inclusive.” Dr. Meghan Walker “If you can pick it, peel it, fish or hunt it, milk it or grow it, then for the most part you can eat it, you know, staying with real food.” Dr. Anna Cabeca “Getting rid of the shame and guilt that we have as women that we carry because we can't act exactly like men or do the things that men can do I think is really important.” Dr. Stephanie Estima “Oxytocin's a powerful alkalinizer, so that hormone of love, bonding and connection is important.” Dr. Anna Cabeca

She has over two decades experience as a hands on Senior HR and Transformation business executive and advisor to ASX Top 20 CEOs. Naomi makes it count by helping people step into their power and hit full velocity, supporting leadership teams make the biggest impact possible impact and is committed to accessing every resource at her disposal to help teams reach their mission. Naomi experienced her own midlife transition recently and shares with us how, when it hit, everything broke at once - her marriage, her career, her family's health. Despite these challenges, Naomi explains to us how she moved through this time and the gifts she found when all her foundations disappeared at once. We're let in on her top three tips for midlife transitions and how these help her support and empower teams and leaders to show up in a different way so that they can have more impact. This was such an honest and grounding conversation. Naomi's advice is to follow your heart and follow your joy and you'll always be on the right path. My friend, Helen Appleby and I recorded a series of conversations for LinkedIn last year discussing the challenges our clients face in their Senior Leadership positions. We received so much great feedback that I decided to release them as podcast episodes for you to experience. In life and business, we spend a lot of time trying to get people to see things our way. In today's show, we explore how listening, really listening, can help improve your impact. "Often the first level argument, isn't what's really important to the person speaking.” – Mark J. Silverman “The deeper you can get into someone's world, the more likely you will be able to influence them.” – Helen Appleby People have a point of view, listening helps you understand The power of asking “why” Listening helps you shape your proposal Listening fosters “win -win.” Helen Appleby is a British, New York based Executive Coach, Author, Speaker and Leadership Trainer who has a strong track record of leadership and commercial success. Her career at GSK and Unilever spanned 6 countries and she has lived and worked in Canada, the UK, Cyprus, Dubai, Malaysia and the USA. She is the author of “The Unwritten Rules of Women's Leadership” book, course and podcast. Are you a busy, overwhelmed business leader? My friend, Helen Appleby and I recorded a series of conversations for LinkedIn last year discussing the challenges our clients face in their Senior Leadership positions. We received so much great feedback that I decided to release them as podcast episodes for you to experience. Helen and I met in a mastermind six years ago. In that mastermind, we developed deep, lifelong friendships that are invaluable to us today. But friendship isn't the only benefit. "I hang with people who think so highly of me that the negative self-talk never gets a foot hold.” – Mark J. Silverman “It is amazing to have a place to go for support, inspiration and resources.” – Helen Appleby Be in a room with people who raise the bar for you When the value is high, even busy folks show up for every meeting In a mastermind, you get by giving Seek people who will tell you the truth, no matter how uncomfortable Diversity only adds to the power Helen Appleby is a British, New York based Executive Coach, Author, Speaker and Leadership Trainer who has a strong track record of leadership and commercial success.
