Listeners of Mastering Midlife Podcast that love the show mention: loved the recent, mark and his guests,Daniel Landau is the Founder and Executive Director of Mens Helpline, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting men seeking emotional support after losing a child due to a miscarriage, still birth, and infertility. Following a successful career as the head of various organizations' fundraising, sales, and business development departments, Daniel and his wife experienced the emotional trauma of losing a child due to a miscarriage. After realizing there were many resources available for women experiencing infant loss, but very few available for men, Daniel shifted the course of his career - and life - and started the Mens Helpline organization. In addition to working full-time at Mens Helpline, Daniel is also a Board member for the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation and the host of the Men Talk Podcast. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Queens College in Political Science and a Master's degree in Non Profit Management and Leadership from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Daniel joins me today to share his story of losing a child due to a miscarriage and the challenges he faced to find emotional support. We discuss how the concept of Mens Helpline began and why traditional support groups aimed to help women through the trauma of losing a child are not always as effective for men. We discuss how Mens Helpline offers a unique way for men to gain support from other men suffering from the grief of losing a child and why its critical for men to share their emotions and be open to communicating their feelings with their spouse. We also discuss the five stages of grief, strategies men can use to cope with grief, and how the grieving process can help you become a stronger, more empathetic spouse. “Grief does open up opportunities at the end of the day. You never know why it happens, but - at the end of the day - when it does happen, and you accept it, it makes you stronger.” - Daniel Landau This week on Mastering Overwhelm: Daniel's personal experience with losing a child due to a miscarriage The challenges many men face when seeking emotional support Why men often refrain from attending support groups and group therapy How Mens Helpline provides support to men suffering from miscarraige, infant loss, and infertility Daniel's advice to men suffering from the emotional strain of losing a child The importance of keeping the lines of communication open with your spouse The 5 stages of grief and why it's critical to find an outlet to help you cope Connect with Daniel Landau: Mens Helpline Mens Helpline on Instagram Mens Helpline on Facebook Podcast: MenTalk MenTalk Facebook Group Daniel Landau on LinkedIn Mastering Overwhelm - Set Yourself Free to Enjoy Your Success Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Mastering Overwhelm Podcast. My friend, Helen Appleby and I recorded a series of conversations for LinkedIn last year discussing the challenges our clients face in their Senior Leadership positions. We received so much great feedback that I decided to release them as podcast episodes for you to experience. Today's show explores how our self-limiting impact every aspect of our lives. "Uncovering the beliefs we formed when an event happened helps us right size it for who we are today .” – Mark J. Silverman “Some events from childhood didn't seem traumatic at the time, still influence my thinking today.” – Helen Appleby Even after decades of inner work, there are always more layers of the onion. Beliefs come from the “meaning we made” of things that happened in the past. Some of these “beliefs” have benefits… for a time. Coaching is a way to gain perspective on the beliefs that subconsciously run us day to day. After seven years of working with Sinek, Peter began sharing his insights on the factors that make organizations thrive. He recently published Leading from the Jumpseat, a book where Peter draws from his life experiences to show that leadership is about lifting and empowering others. Peter joins me today to discuss what it takes for leaders to create new leaders. He outlines how to assess whether switching career paths is the right decision. He differentiates a stand from a position and underscores why knowing the distinction matters for leaders. Peter also defines what it means to lead from the jumpseat and highlights the impact of bringing love and empathy to the business world. “Lead with the intention of empowering people, so they can carry forward those things that are important.” - Peter Docker Today on Mastering Midlife: Peter's background and how he pivoted from serving in the UK Royal Air Force to working with Simon Sinek The courage it takes to pivot between industries and how to prepare for it How to know if switching career paths is the right decision for you The difference between a position and a stand What it means to lead from the jumpseat Shifting from the “doer” to the “leader” mindset and working through the emotional baggage of letting someone else lead Fear: its origins and how it shows up in people Choosing to lead with love and the power of embracing humble confidence Love and fear in action in the business world and the impact of showing your colleagues that you care Learning how to fly, being in flow, and teaching others to fly The importance of recognizing that we are human and we make mistakes Resources Mentioned: Leading from Love vs. Fear | Peter Docker at EPIC/2020 Connect with Peter Docker: Leading from the Jumpseat Book: Leading from the Jumpseat: How to Create Extraordinary Opportunities by Handing Over Control Peter Docker on LinkedIn Peter Docker on Instagram Peter Docker on Twitter Mastering Midlife...Together! Walking home from the gym one morning, I remembered something traumatic from a show we watched the night before. My body stiffened. Grief washed over me. It's a TV show. I know the actor is on other shows. It's not real! Then I realized…. My body doesn't know the difference. My marketing people often use excerpts from the chapter called “fear” in “Only 10s – How to Use Distraction to Get the Right Things Done,” because they are the most relatable and compelling. I reread this chapter for myself when I get stuck. In today's episode, I read from the chapter and talk about how and what fear costs me… and what to do about it. “I am amazed at how much time and life fear has stolen from me.” – Mark J. Silverman Today on Mastering Midlife: You know you want to speak up, create, and dance…even if you lie to yourself about it. Courage is feeling the fear, and doing it anyway. Fear can mask as “I don't want to,” confusion, procrastination or anger. Admitting it is fear is the first step to “choice.” When something is a “9.5” (on a scale of 1-10) and fear is a “10,” fear wins. Terror is easy to spot, it's the little fears that shape our behavior that are the long term danger.
