The Large is a perfect example of the sort of figure we want to talk about on No Tags. She's been a savvy behind-the-scenes operator for over 15 years, coming of age in London's late ‘00s DIY clubbing era as a promoter, DJ, radio host and blogger. It was in the early part of the next decade, however, that she came into her own at Mixpak, the New York-based label that did more than any to connect the dots between the Caribbean, the UK and US in the 2010s. As label manager, Suze worked with Vybz Kartel, Murlo, Jubilee, Palmistry and more – but none made as seismic an impact as Popcaan, whose first two albums had Suze at the helm. Her crowning glory however, came in the summer of 2016 when Mixpak (and a weighty extended crew) triumphed in London's Wembley Arena at Red Bull's flagship Culture Clash event, to a global viewing audience of millions. As we find out in this episode, Suze was at the heart of that success, organising hundreds of exclusive dubplates and guest appearances to leverage their soundclash victory, including Spice, Popcaan, J Hus, Tony Matterhorn, Sneakbo, Kranium and Drake. We spoke to Suze about her decade in NYC, the mechanics of releasing music in 2024, the inside scoop on Culture Clash, dancehall's historical relationship with the US-UK press machine, the emergence of Latin America and Korea as global pop music forces, the difference between drunk crowds and ketamine crowds, and much, much more. Thanks for listening to No Tags.

JyellowL, shiv, Kojaque and Gemma Dunleavy, four key voices on the Dublin music scene, discuss the art of storytelling, the importance of showing up, and how being an artist is a walking contradiction. JyellowL is a Nigerian-born rapper based in Dublin, Ireland. Influenced by the city's thriving underground hip-hop scene, his music is packed with socially conscious lyrics that deal with everything from racism to the climate crisis. His debut album 2020 Division was nominated for Irish Album of the Year at the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Awards, and his track Ozone featured on the FIFA 20 soundtrack. DJ-turned-singer-songwriter shiv was born in Zimbabwe and raised in Ireland's County Kildare. Her music blends lo-fi hip-hop beats with elements of R&B and neo-soul to create a sound which she calls “emotional escapism”. Her latest EP, The Love Interlude, was released in 2021. Rapper, producer and visual artist Kojaque was born and raised in Dublin. His sound blends elements of hip-hop and jazz with poetic lyricism. He co-founded Soft Boy Records in 2015, and has toured with the likes of Slowthai and Lana Del Rey, collaborated with Swedish-born rapper Luka Palm, and performed at festivals including SXSW and Glastonbury. Gemma Dunleavy is a songwriter, producer and north inner-city Dubliner known for experimenting with instruments like the harp and flute. She blends her love of pop and club music with traditional storytelling, and has collaborated with the likes of Murlo, DJ Sharda and Swing Ting. In her own words, her songs “each represent something I've experienced, someone I've been, someone I am or someone I've lost.”

This week's Resident Advisor Exchange, recorded live at AVA London with journalist Kieran Yates, forms part of Elijah's guest-edited month. Throughout March, we've run curated content published with the intention of demystifying the music industry. Elijah & Skilliam began DJing together in 2007. In 2010, they launched a label, Butterz, putting out music from the likes of Terror Danjah, Royal-T, Flava D and Murlo. Over the course of the next decade, they played a vital role in the way grime developed and exploded in the UK. Elijah is also an artist manager, looking after the careers of Flava D, DJ Q and Swindle. He uses his platform and deep understanding of the inner workings of the music industry to share tips and probing questions to help shape the future of electronic music. As we wrap up Elijah's guest-edited month, he spoke to Yates about how the industry has changed since his early years as a DJ, the difference between creating art and creating content, the limitations of not engaging with electronic music outside of Europe, and how the measure of your legacy as an artist won't just be about your art, but about how you interacted with others and shared your knowledge. I’ve just returned from the TENUTA DI MURLO murlo estate. It’s a good two hour drive from Rome airport, or half an hour from Perugia if you fly Ryan Air Enzo, the driver picked me up. Carrying a large card which said ‘Tucher’ – I have had so many names over the past twenty years – Ticker, Tiger, Tooler, Tusher – I quite liked Tucher. Enzo is the driver for the murlo estate, and turns the two hour drive into just over an hour. The estate itself is 6000 hectares of hillside, valley and more hillside. Driving even at speed to the destination, I did not fail to see the stunning hill top towns of San Gemini, Spoletto, Gobbio, Todi, Cortona, all of which are easily doable from the base at murlo. Five villas, with a fishing lodge, and walks which will challenge all levels of hiker, trekker or whatever they want to call themselves these days, I visited in November, when the leaves were about to turn. They were starting to drop like confetti from the trees, celebrating a hot summer, when the wine this year would be excellent. The trees seemed to laugh and applaud by turn as I walked down the pathways, which Enzo made light of on his way to my villa, El Torro. The villas host anything from six to twelve guests and vary in price and size. They each have pools and views, Santa Croce arguably boasting the best, as it is the highest and largest, but I loved my villa mainly because I arrived at night and woke up to an overwhelmingly beautiful vista of hillside, upon hillside of forest, and hill top village. The silence is stunning, you live the quiet here. This is Italy at its best. I visited Assisi for the day and found myself musing around the narrow cobbled streets and buying a ceramic hand painted plate – broken on transit alas – and visiting the main church which had an incredible atmosphere and energy which the others seemed to lack. I found my way, almost by accident to the Eremo Carceri, which is a small monastery perched on a hillside – literally – where St Francis of Assisi lived. The monastery is beautiful but it is the walk which is mind blowing. Much has been written, sung, alliterated about Italian architecture but its willderness in the Umbrian hills is mind blowing. There is a TV with sky, but turning it on is like a impertinence to the surroundings. The birds visit, the light is primed for an artist to paint a masterpiece or at least give it a go. There’s a golf course a five minute drive away – ask Enzo – and a fishing lodge which is so beautiful I want to have one in my place in France. I just need a lake with fish. The estate has its own waterfall, and restaurant il Caldaro, which serves the rustic Umbrian cuisine – but with flair. The wine cellar is very good –you can go on wine tastings, and chocolate tastings, but I still kept coming back to the peace. And the walks. The estate provides picnics and tours of the local villages if you wish, golf days too – beware hole number eight – they all write about hole number eight - as well as yoga and pilates in your villa. Breakfast, lunch and supper will be served by silent swan-like staff who all make it look effortless. I have found my perfect outdoor break in the heart of Italy.  [http://www.murlo.com/the-estate/](http://www.murlo.com/the-estate/) Never miss a gorgeous podcast: [http://radiogorgeous.com/sign-up-newsletter/](http://radiogorgeous.com/sign-up-newsletter/) #GorgeousEscapes #Italy #radiogorgeous

Mixpak FM 066 is brought to you by London producer & DJ, Mr. Mitch. Despite having produced tracks for the likes of Skepta, Trim and Riko Dan, it's the instrumental in-and-of-itself where Mr. Mitch finds his true home, as we saw on his offering for the first Mixpak Pressure compilation. Known for tracks that reach to the outer limits of grime experimentation and weirdness, Mr. Mitch's output ranges from the playful Peace edits of The Beach Boys or Pharrell (while everyone else was bringing the war dubs), to the more ambient sounds, like 'The Man Waits'. As well as being a resident at the ever-growing instrumental grime night Boxed, Mitch also heads Gobstopper Records, releasing tracks from Strict Face, Bloom and Moony. His Mixpak FM runs through tracks from young UK producers Inkke, Murlo and JD Reid, as well as revered electronic producers Actress and Clark, not to mention his own edits.

Mixpak FM 065 comes from UK producer, Finn. Emerging only a few months ago and making his way on to our radar via Slackk's mixes, Finn's sound comes in the great tradition and renewed vibrance of grime-meets-RnB-samples (see Spooky, Inkke, Milktray for more). With skipping rhythms that play with space & movement, Finn's cut-up beats look to 90s icons like Ginuwine & Missy to complete that head-turning UK sound. With a contribution to the first Boxed compilation out and a forthcoming 12" on Local Action, it's already a certified formula. His Mixpak FM is a journey through some of the most exciting sounds of this corner of the underground. Never afraid to dip into pop reworks as easily as the obscurer sounds of London, Finn puts his own work next to Mixpak favorites Murlo, Kingdom and DJ Q.
