She later joined Nextlaw Labs and Nextlaw Ventures, founded by Dentons, as Chief Growth Officer. As justice tech executive in residence at Village Capital, Maya works with a broad investor coalition and startup founders to define, support, grow, and fund the justice tech sector. In addition to her work at Village Capital and the Justice Technology Association, Maya is a startup advisor, as well as a consultant for Am Law 50 and midsize law firms, legal departments, alternative legal service providers, investors, and venture funds on tech and innovation. Change management in the legal industry is increasingly important as the industry recognizes the need for innovation and embraces technology. This podcast transcript provides insights into the role of change management in the legal industry and how it can drive positive transformation.Maya Markovich was part of an advanced team that conducted change readiness assessments and developed implementation plans for big tech platforms. This work went beyond simply installing technology and providing user guides. It involved creating the muscle memory and buy-in necessary for long-term change adoption. At the time, Maya had no idea this expertise would be relevant to the legal industry."So the legal industry, you know, hasn't changed much for hundreds of years," explains Maya Markovich on the You Are A Lawyer podcast. However, Maya Markovich eventually realized they wanted a broader social impact and went to law school. While working in law, they were always drawn to working with technology and the benefits it could bring to both clients and attorneys. They saw the potential to reduce the drudgery of early years of practice and improve efficiency. Eventually, they transitioned to the legal tech side and stopped practicing law.In this episode, we discuss: Innovation in the legal industry. Legal tech gaining attention. Legal industry's changing landscape. Closing the access to justice gap. Pro se litigants. Legal tech and innovation space. Law and tech intersect for social impact in various ways. The podcast transcript highlights the importance of leveraging technology to address access to justice issues and make legal services more affordable and accessible to all.The legal industry has traditionally been slow to embrace technology innovation. The industry has relied on traditional methods and practices for centuries with little change or advancement. However, there has been a significant shift towards embracing technology and innovation within the legal sector in recent years."Lawyers are just, you know, they're reluctant to change and the legal industry itself is reluctant to change for a lot of different reasons, but change is coming," shares Maya Markovich on the You Are A Lawyer podcast.ADVERTISER:This episode is produced by KD Creative. NextLaw Labs aims to drive transformation within the legal industry by investing in and evaluating legal tech startups and working with Dentons' clients on their internal innovation initiatives. This initiative recognizes the need for change and aims to position Dentons at the forefront of the evolving legal landscape."[A]lso bringing in diverse stakeholders to the table and understanding what perspectives they can bring is always going to outperform the kind of services that a homogenous status quo focused group is going to be able to deliver to clients," shared Maya Markovich while speaking to Kyla Denanyoh on the You Are A Lawyer podcast. The legal industry has been historically resistant to change for several reasons. Firstly, there is a lack of client-centricity, with the industry often failing to prioritize the needs and expectations of clients. Additionally, the legal sector has been slow to adopt technology, lagging behind other industries in utilizing technology to improve efficiency and deliver better client services."No one goes to law school to sit in a windowless room and do doc review," explained Maya Markovich on the You Are A Lawyer podcast. However, the landscape is changing rapidly. In just a few years, the number of legal tech companies has grown exponentially, from 75 in 2015 to close to 2000 today. These companies offer various solutions, from court filing and e-discovery tools to regulatory monitoring and client request intake platforms. This explosion of legal tech products demonstrates the increasing interest and demand for innovative solutions within the legal industry. Moreover, institutional investors are starting to take notice of the potential in the legal tech market. Previously, legal tech was often overlooked or misunderstood by investors. However, as the industry continues to evolve and the demand for technology solutions grows, investors recognize the opportunity for growth and profitability in this sector. The legal industry is known for resisting change, and many lawyers and law firms remain reluctant to adopt new technologies. This reluctance can be attributed to various factors, including a fear of job displacement, concerns about data security and privacy, and a lack of understanding or awareness of available technology solutions.Join the FREE mailing list!Get behind-the-scenes content from You Are A Lawyer. 1) Visit www.youarealawyer.com2) Add your email address to the Subscribe pop-up box OR3) Enter your email address on the right side of the screen4) Get emails from me (I won't fill your inbox with junk)!

Most people view legal profession as traditional and slow to adapt to ever present forces of technology and innovation. In some aspects they are right and there are good reasons for moving slowly. In its core, legal profession is intrinsically based on trust and human to human interaction. Equally important, it is a part of the justice system and as such it cannot afford itself the luxury to “move fast and break things”. But it does move. Lawyers use AI-based systems to enhance document review processes, they work with contract automation, regtech tools and other innovative technologies. So, it seems only natural to have Maya Markovich as a guest to discuss all things legal tech. Maya is the Chief Growth Officer of Nextlaw Labs since 2015. Nextlaw Labs is the industry's first and leading legal technology and innovation catalyst and intelligence hub, focused exclusively on legal innovation via early-stage legal tech. With her unique background spanning behavioral science, law, investment, and change management, Maya currently leads analysis, collaboration, launch, and adoption of early-stage legal tech. In this episode we discussed the challenges and opportunities of innovation in legal sector, how it's like to work with lawyers on developing legal tech solutions, and how can legal profession leverage tech lessons that other industries have already learned.Maya was named one of five “Influential Women of Legal Tech” by ILTA in 2020, a “Woman Leading Legal Tech” by The Technolawgist in 2019, and an ABA Legal Technology Resource Center “Woman of Legal Tech 2018” – you can follow her on LinkedIn.

This podcast launched the Centre for Legal Innovation's (CLI) second series on Reinvent Legal Business (RLB 2). RLB 2 will explore areas like new legal businesses, new approaches to legal service and product delivery, new roles and, how all this combines. We're viewing these changes through a global lens in this series, so each session features specialists from more than one country - global thought leaders and doers who are shaping next practices and, share their knowledge and experience about how they got there (or are continuing their journey) and, their successes and failures along the way. In this podcast,  Terri Mottershead, Executive Director, CLI, facilitated a panel discussion that focussed on The Case for Legal R&D – Legaltech Hubs and Innovation. Terri was joined by an amazing international panel of legal innovation/legaltech hub leaders from law schools and legal practice in Australia, India and the USA: Alice Armitage, Professor & Director of Applied Innovation, UC Hastings College of the Law  (USA); Michelle Grossmann, Chief Innovation Officer & Transformation Lead, Lander & Rogers Lawyers | iHub (Australia); Komal Gupta, Head of Innovation, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (India); and Maya Markovich, Chief Growth Officer, Nextlaw Labs at Dentons (USA). Topics discussed included: What's the purpose of innovation/legaltech hubs? What do the people leading these hubs do? How do the hubs work, and who do they work with or for? How do the hubs contribute to legal innovation/legaltech development? Are these hubs reinventing lawyer/client relationships through experimentation and additional ways to collaborate? Have the hubs become the R&D function of the legal industry? This was an insightful, informative, candid and generous discussion – a conversation that will stay with you and have you buzzing for hours if not weeks after you listen to it. Thank you so much Alice, Michelle, Komal and Maya for a brilliant conversation – we are inspired by your amazing work and the difference it makes in the legal industry every day! P.S. It's not enough to be innovative or innovate! It's not a one off proposition. In the legal industry today, it's increasingly about continuous improvement, agility and embedding these core capabilities in law firms/legal departments so they underpin and drive the way business is done every day - this IS the new firm/organisational culture. After a year-end holiday hiatus, we're back with another episode of the Legal Tech StartUp Focus podcast. In this episode your podcast host, Charlie Uniman, interviews Maya Markovich, Chief Growth Officer of Nextlaw Labs (www.nextlawlabs.com). Maya and Charlie launch this episode by delving into Maya's career and the path that took her from working as a consultant who dealt with change management and user buy-in issues, to law school, to practicing law in the high pressure environment of a law firm (where, as Maya points out, adoption of legal tech - then in its earlier stages - would have helped to manage practice pressures) to her present position at Nextlaw Labs. Maya next explains just what Nextlaw Labs does for the startups that are part of its accelerator program. As Maya describes Nextlaw Labs, it's an accelerator that helps legal tech startups navigate the legal tech market and, in so doing, takes advantage of an incomparable ecosystem that arises from Nextlaw Labs' relationship with (i) its sister company, the legal tech-focused venture capital firm, Nextlaw Ventures, (ii) its parent organization, the Dentons law firm (the largest firm by attorney headcount in the world) and (iii) the Denton's worldwide referral network of law firms of all sizes. Maya offers a detailed survey of just what an accelerator such as Nextlaw Labs, one that's deeply familiar with the legal tech industry, can do to enhance a startup's chances of success in developing its product and marketing and selling that product to law firms and legal departments. Because this podcast episode airs at the start of a new year, the conversations turns to to crystal ball gazing; that is to say, making predictions for the legal tech industry in 2020. After asking listeners to remember only the correct predictions made during the podcast, Charlie and Maya (i) reveal their optimistic take on legal tech adoption in the coming year, (ii) discuss trends in M&A for legal tech startups in 2020 (including how those trends may be affected by the increasing "platformization" of legal tech), (iii) cover some of the directions startup funding may take this year and (iv) applaud what is expected to be an increase in 2020 in the number of women who found legal tech startups and join the ranks of early-stage investors in legal tech. Maya invites legal tech startups who wish to learn more about Nextlaw Labs to reach out to her (at talktous@nextlawlabs.com) for more information about its accelerator program and the benefits available to startups that enter the Nextlaw Labs' accelerator program by virtue of Nextlaw Labs' participation in the ecosystem of Nextlaw Ventures, the Dentons law firm and the Dentons' referral network.

On this episode of LawNext, host Bob Ambrogi travels to Toronto to sit down for a live recording with the founders of the AI-driven legal research platform ROSS Intelligence, CEO Andrew Arruda and CTO Jimoh Ovbiagele. Along with a third founder, Pargles Dall’Oglio, Arruda and Ovbiagele first developed ROSS at the University of Toronto in 2014, rapidly gaining international attention for what the news media dubbed the robot lawyer of the future.  In short order, the founders were invited to Silicon Valley to participate in the prestigious Y-Combinator startup incubator. Denton’s NextLaw Labs made ROSS one of its earliest investments. In 2015, they secured $4.3 million in seed funding and then, two years later, another $8.7 million in Series A funding. In 2017, Forbes named the three founders to its “30 Under 30.” So where is ROSS today? On today’s episode, Arruda and Ovbiagele recount the founding of their company, its rapid rise, controversy over its marketing, major developments over the past year, and what lies ahead. They also share their thoughts about AI in legal more broadly and its potential impact on the practice of law.  NEW: We are now on Patreon! Just a few years ago, a large law firm by the name of Dentons realized the coming changes that an overlap between technology and law might create, and wanted to get ahead of the game. As a result, Dentons created Nextlaw Labs with the vision of reinventing the practice of law using technology. As a subsidiary of Nextlaw Labs, Nextlaw Ventures emerged, which is an early-stage, legal-focused venture fund that invests in a variety of legal tech companies. As the CEO and Managing Director of Nextlaw Ventures, Dan Jansen discusses just a few of the 10 legal tech companies currently in their fund, including ROSS Intelligence, which is an expert legal, research-driven tool that leverages AI to answer legal questions and create legal memos. Jansen believes that this technology will have a democratizing effect on the practice of law by allowing small firms to find the answers to complex questions that, otherwise, only larger firms might have the ability to answer. Tune in to hear the full discussion, and visit nextlawventures.com to read about all 10 companies in Nextlaw Venture's portfolio.
