If bands like Little Feat, The Allman Brothers, and NRBQ tend to take you into outer space, then transatlantic “supergroup” One Eleven Heavy — featuring James Jackson Toth on guitar/vocals, Nick Mitchell-Maiato on guitar/vocals, Dan Brown on bass, and Hans Chew on keys — has got an album for you. Desire Path takes the band’s shared love of psychedelic-tinged “classic” rock and blasts it into the 21st Century, pairing mind-bending guitar excursions and serious lyrical chops with an undeniable groove that bridge our heady rock ‘n’ roll past with what may turn out to be a seriously groovy future. In this episode we pay tribute to Quicksilver Messenger Service guitar player, Gary Duncan, who passed on June 29 at the age of 72. Quicksilver was closely entwined with the Grateful Dead in the Bay Area 60's scene, of course, but we focus on Quicksilver's story and get into some live tunes from 1967. After that we jump forward to one of Gary Duncan's appearances with the Dead in the 90s. First off, though, we spend a couple minutes talking about the upcoming album from Episode 30 guests, One Eleven Heavy. Their new album is called Desire Path and comes out on September 20 via Beyond Beyond is Beyond. Quicksilver Messenger Service's hey day may be past but there are still great tapes and the band has been cleaning them up and putting them out. You can get some smoking live Quicksilver shows at their bandcamp page: https://quicksilvermessengerservice.bandcamp.com/ Once again, let me remind you that the Brokedown Podcast is part of the Osiris podcast network. This month, I felt a sudden shock of inspiration and this podcast seemed to appear instantly out of thin air! EPISODE #70 of Random Old Records started like many past ones have, with a song that I couldn't get out of my head.In this case, it was the first track off the classic 1997 album by The Promise Ring, Nothing Feels Good. "Is This Thing On?" lit a spark in me that led to a set of incredible late '90s post-hardcore emo-punk-pop from Jets To Brazil, Superchunk, and others. From there, the episode flows into a bunch of recent jams from One Eleven Heavy, Shannon and the Clams, Exploded View, Mountain Movers, Dreamend, and so much more. If you like raw post-punk, rootsy guitars, and/or dreamy drones, there's something for you here, plus you'll get wild excerpts from the 1960 sci-fi classic Amazing Transparent Man!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS. If you like the show, please rate it and write a review! More classic episodes from the past ten years are being added to the feed as well, so check those out as well. You can also go the traditional route and stream or download the new episode below. Watch this space in about a month for the next episode of Random Old Records. Hey there, Dead Freaks! In this episode we talk to James Toth and Nick Mitchell Maiato about their new group One Eleven Heavy and their recently released album, "Everything's Better". We talk separately about their history, the formation of this group, and their Grateful Dead fandom. We also manage to spin a cut from the record and a whole mess of Grateful Dead tunes. The band is heading out on the road next month so head over to our website, brokedownpodcast.blogspot.com to have a look at the tourdates and see if you can catch them playing near you.
Rob and Callum former forum-dwellers and dreamers of post-American Pie blockbusters present another hour-plus of new music and nonsense wittering.Callum is full on punk immediacy today with the new wave calls of Color TV to the straight-up blast of noise from Shitty Life, there's some sneering Oz drawl from Rex Wonderful & the Silk Sheets and Seagulls. Rob's a little more on the Grateful Dead vibe with One Eleven Heavy, the funk instros of The White Blinds, the noir-folk-jazz of Annabel (lee) and the Trinidadian-meets-poetry jam on Anthony Joseph. There's plenty more besides.Excuse the opening crackles in sound and imagine it's a record you ain't got round to cleaning.
Music for heads: jams, acoustic guitar, blow-outs, psychedelic percussion (not in that order), featuring Thor & Friends, The Ex, One Eleven Heavy, Man Forever, Sunwatchers, & Alexander
